Abstract:In this work, we present a method for absolute measurement of air fluorescence yield based on high resolution optical emission spectroscopy. The absolute measurement of the air fluorescence yield is feasible using the Cherenkov light, emitted by an electron beam simultaneously with the fluorescence light, as a "standard candle". The separation of these two radiations can be accomplished exploiting the "dark" spectral regions of the emission band systems of the molecular spectrum of nitrogen. In these "dark" regions the net Cherenkov light can be recorded experimentally and be compared with the calculated one. The instrumentation for obtaining the nitrogen molecular spectra in high resolution and the noninvasive method for monitoring the rotational temperature of the emission process are also described. For the experimental evaluation of the molecular spectra analysis we used DC normal glow discharges in air performed in an appropriate spectral lamp considered as an air-fluorescence light emulator. The proposed method and the associated instrumentation could be tested and used in thin or thick target experiments in electron beam accelerators as a candidate optical system for this purpose.

A New Gas Cell for High-Precision Doppler Measurements in the Near-Infrared

Abstract:High-resolution spectroscopy in the near-infrared could become the leading method for discovering extra-solar planets around very low-mass stars and brown dwarfs. To help to achieve an accuracy of ~m/s, we are developing a gas cell which consists of a mixture of gases whose absorption spectral lines span all over the near-infrared region. We present the most promising mixture, made of acetylene, nitrous oxide, ammonia, chloromethans and hydrocarbons. The mixture is contained in a small size 13 cm long gas cell and covers most of the H and K-bands. It also shows small absorptions in the J-band but they are few and not sharp enough for near infrared wavelength calibration. We describe the working method and experiments and compare our results with the state of the art for near infrared gas cells.

Abstract:In the present study we have standardised a methodology based on 14 N(α,pγ) 17 O nuclear reaction for the determination of nitrogen in materials. The determination is based on the detection of the 871 keV prompt γ-rays, characteristic of the reaction, by high resolution γ-ray spectrometry. The Q value of the reaction is −1.192 MeV. The limit of quantification of the method for nitrogen in carbon and stainless steel matrix is 290 ppm. The superior sensitivity, in comparison to 1 4 N(p, ṕγ) 14 N and 15 N(p, αγ) 12 C proton induced nuclear reaction analysis and 14 N(p,p) 14 N, 14 N(α,α) 14 N elastic backscattering, is due to low background and absence of any competing reactions when α particle is being used as a projectile. The method is simple, non-destructive, rapid and provides quantification with a precision of 7 %.

Abstract:Nonlinear optical microscopic imaging techniques have advanced for chemically sensitive imaging of solid and liquid samples but lack advancements for gaseous samples. In this work, wide-field three-color ultrafast coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering microscopy is implemented for selectively imaging the ambient nitrogen gas. Our technique operates by capturing a series of spectrally selected images with a rate of 5–10 frames per second. The recorded data are analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively. This technique has been demonstrated to be sensitive to a variation of approximately 1011 nitrogen molecules in ambient air confined within a microscopic volume of 10 μm by 50 μm by 50 μm. We believe that our approach can potentially be extended toward real-time, in situ chemical imaging of the microscopic dynamics of gases, for example, in ammonia for nitrogen cycle, greenhouse gases for environmental pollution, plant fertilization regulation for precision agriculture, or byproducts produced from lower-temperature plasmas.

Abstract:For the calorimetric determination of the primary energy of extensive air showers, measured by fluorescence telescopes, a precise knowledge of the conversion factor (fluorescence yield) between the deposited energy in the atmosphere and the number of emitted fluorescence photons is essential. The fluorescence yield depends on the pressure and the temperature of the air as well as on the water vapor concentration. Within the scope of this work the fluorescence yield for the eight strongest nitrogen emission bands between 300 nm and 400 nm has been measured using electrons from a Sr-90 source with energies between 250 keV and 2000 keV. Measurements have been performed in dry air, pure nitrogen, and a nitrogen-oxygen mixture at pressures ranging from 2 hPa to 990 hPa. Furthermore the influence of water vapor has been studied. A new approach for the parametrization of the fluorescence yield was used to analyze the data, leading to a consistent description of the fluorescence yield with a minimal set of parameters. The resulting absolute accuracies for the single nitrogen bands are in the order of 15%. In the investigated energy range, the fluorescence yield proved to be independent of the energy of the ionizing electrons.

Abstract:We describe a nitrogen-specific detector (NSD) for aqueous mobile phase-based high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). It is based by means of total hydrophilic organic nitrogen detection. Separated analytes are photooxidized online and converted to nitrate, followed by an ultravilet absorbance detector. It features response dependant on the product of nitrogen number in the molecule and its molar concentration, no matter what is ultravilet-absorbing or not. The HPLC equipped with NSD can quantify nitrogen-containing analytes via a sole standard of potassium nitrate for calibration. This results in identical calibration curve for all nitrogen-containing analytes, obviating individual calibration. The limit of detection of NSD is 4.3 μM N/L, and its linear range is up to 4 mM N/L.

Abstract:A compact nitrogen dioxide (NO2) detection system is developed based on differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS) using light emitting diode (LED) as the light source. Alumina ceramic, with properties of highly scattering and low absorption in the wavelength region of 430 ∼ 450 nm, is utilized as the gas cell to make the system extremely compact. Nitrogen dioxides with various concentrations are measured and the concentrations are retrieved by multiple-linear-regression (MLR) method. The results show that the system presented is robust, compact, and promising for future industrial applications.

Abstract:In this paper we propose a new method for measuring the cross section of low yield nuclear reactions by capturing the products in a cryogenically frozen noble gas solid. Once embedded in the noble gas solid, which is optically transparent, the product atoms can be selectively identified by laser induced fluorescence and individually counted via optical imaging to determine the cross section. Single atom sensitivity by optical imaging is feasible because the surrounding lattice of noble gas atoms facilitates a large wavelength shift between the excitation and emission spectrum of the product atoms. The tools and techniques from the fields of single molecule spectroscopy and superresolution imaging in combination with an electromagnetic recoil separator, for beam and isotopic differentiation, allow for a detection scheme with near unity efficiency, a high degree of selectivity, and single atom sensitivity. This technique could be used to determine a number of astrophysically important nuclear reaction rates.

Abstract:An improved method to determine electron temperature in inductively coupled nitrogen plasmas using optical emission spectroscopy is proposed. The molecular kinetic model, which includes the kinetic rates of excited nitrogen molecules, evaluates the line ratio by including all emission lines in the first and second positive band system of molecular nitrogen. Abstract:Supercontinuum sources based on intrapulse difference frequency generation (IDFG) from mode-locked lasers open new opportunities in mid-infrared gas spectroscopy. These sources provide high power and ultra-broadband spectral coverage in the molecular fingerprint region with very low relative intensity noise. Here, we demonstrate the performance of such a light source in combination with a multipass cell and a custom-built Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS) for multispecies trace gas detection. The light source provides a low-noise, ultra-broad spectrum from 2–11.5 µm with ∼3 W output power, outperforming existing mid-infrared supercontinuum sources in terms of noise, spectral coverage, and output power. This translates to an excellent match for spectroscopic applications, establishing (sub-)ppb sensitivity for molecular hydrocarbons (e.g., CH 4 , C 2 H 4 ), oxides (e.g., SO 2 , NO x ), and small organic molecules (e.g., acetone, ethyl acetate) over the spectral range of the supercontinuum source with a measurement time varying from seconds to minutes. We demonstrate a practical application by measuring the off-gas composition of a bioreactor containing an acidic ammonia-oxidizing culture with the simultaneous detection of multiple nitrogen oxides (NO, NO 2 , N 2 O, etc.). As the different species absorb various parts of the spectrum, these results highlight the functionality of this spectroscopic system for biological and environmental applications.

Optimization of GEM detectors for applications in X-ray fluorescence imaging

Abstract:In this work a set of simulations that aim at the optimization of gaseous detectors for applications in X-ray fluorescence imaging in the energy range of 3 -- 30keV is presented. By studying the statistical distribution of the radiation interactions with gases, the energy resolution limits after charge multiplication for 6keV X-ray photons in Ar/CO$_2$(70/30) and Kr/CO$_2$(90/10) were calculated, obtaining energy resolutions of 15.4(4)% and 14.6(2)% respectively. The detector design was also studied to reduce the presence of escape peaks and complement a model to evaluate the inevitable X-ray fluorescence of copper generated by the conductive materials inside the detector.

Abstract:Nitric oxide (NO) is a gaseous diatomic molecule that is biosynthesized in mammals, and it regulates a host of physiological processes including blood pressure. Over the last several years, there has been an increased interest in the redox partner HNO and its identifiable dimerization product N2O. This latter gaseous species is also the product of various NO-coupling reactions as occurs in bacterial NO-detoxification processes. An attractive new tool will be the ability to simultaneously detect NO and N2O from the same reaction vessel. We demonstrate proof-of-concept methodology for such a simultaneous and specific NO and N2O detection from the same precursor (from Angeli’s salt decomposition) using tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy without the need for separation or pretreatment of these gases.

Abstract:A high-powered, atmospheric-pressure, helium microwave-induced plasma (MIP) is used as the interface between a gas chromatograph (GC) and a Fourier transform near-infrared (FT-NIR) emission spectrometer. By the collection of a series of time-resolved interferograms when organic compounds elute from the GC into the plasma, a complete account of both spectral and chromatographic activity is recorded. Computer-generated, element-specific chromatographic reconstructions for each of eight different nonmetals are obtained from a single injection of a chemical mixture. Atomic emission intensity vs. chromatographic retention time is plotted for each of eight or more optical frequencies chosen from the 15,700–7900 cm −1 region. The frequencies are preselected to coincide with spectral lines of C, H, N, O, F, Cl, Br, and S emitting from the helium MIP. This unique GC/MIP/FT-NIR emission spectrometer provides simultaneous multielement-specific chromatographic detection of a variety of nonmetals important to synthetic organic chemistry.

Abstract:We present results obtained from a greatly improved version of a previously reported nitrogen dioxide monitor (Anal Chem. 2005, 77, 724-728) that utilizes cavity attenuated phase shift spectroscopy (CAPS). The sensor, which detects the optical absorption of nitrogen dioxide within a 20 nm bandpass centered at 440 nm, comprises a blue light emitting diode, an enclosed stainless steel measurement cell (26 cm length) incorporating a resonant optical cavity of near-confocal design and a vacuum photodiode detector. An analog heterodyne detection scheme is used to measure the phase shift in the waveform of the modulated light transmitted through the cell induced by the presence of nitrogen dioxide within the cell. The sensor, which operates at atmospheric pressure, fits into a 19 in.-rack-mounted instrumentation box, weighs 10 kg, and utilizes 70 W of electrical power with pump included. The sensor response to nitrogen dioxide (calculated as the cotangent of the phase shift) is demonstrated to be linear (r2 > 0.9999) within +/- 1 ppb over a range of 0-320 ppb (by volume). The device exhibits a detection limit (3sigma precision) of less than 60 parts per trillion (0.060 ppb) with 10 s integration, a value derived from measurements at NO2 concentration levels of both 0 and 20 ppb; the detection limit improves as the integration time is increased to several hundred seconds. The observed baseline drift is less than +/- 0.5 ppb overthe course of a month. An intercomparison of measurements of ambient NO2 concentrations over several days using this sensor with a quantum cascade laser-based infrared absorption spectrometer and a standard chemiluminescence-based NOx analyzer is presented. The data from the CAPS sensor are highly correlated (r2 > 0.99) with the other two instruments. The absolute agreement between the CAPS and each of the two other instruments is within the expected statistical noise associated with the infrared laser-based absorption spectrometer (+/- 0.3 ppb with 10 s sampling) and chemiluminescence analyzer (+/- 0.4 ppb with 60 s averaging). The major limitation concerning accuracy is a direct spectral interference with phototchemically produced 1,2-dicarbonyl species (e.g., glyoxal, methylglyoxal). However, this interference can be readily removed by shifting the detection band to a slightly longer wavelength and ensuring that the lower edge of the detection band is greater than 455 nm.
An investigation of the performance of the separated air-acetylene flame in thermal-emission spectroscopy

Abstract:The advantages of the application of a nitrogen-separated air-acetylene flame in the flame-emission spectroscopy of seventeen elements is described. In this flame the secondary reaction zone is separated by a stream of nitrogen flowing parallel to the flame to prevent access of atmospheric oxygen to its base. The low flame background and noise levels have been shown to result in improvement in the detection limits for fifteen elements. In addition, whereas molybdenum and vanadium atomic emission are not detectable in the interconal zone of the conventional flame, in the separated flame detection limits of 2 p.p.m. and 10 p.p.m. have been obtained in aqueous solution for molybdenum (379·8 nm) and vanadium (318·5 nm), respectively. Separation of much of the molecular-band emission from some elements with the secondary reaction zone may result in partial suppression of spectral interference from these elements on the atomic-line emission of the elements determined. The suppression of the interference of magnesium, which occurs through MgOH emission in the secondary zone, on the determination of iron is demonstrated as an example of this effect.

Abstract:A molecular kinetic model used for the line-ratio technique of optical emission spectroscopy to determine electron temperature in an inductively coupled nitrogen plasma is investigated in the pressure range 0.4–100mTorr. Using the electron temperature and electron density measured by a Langmuir probe, the calculated line ratios are found to be in agreement with those measured by a spectrometer. Using this model, the relative contribution of various kinetic processes to the particle balance is analyzed over the whole pressure range.

Abstract:Various atomic spectrometric detectors have been used in gas chromatography (GC) for widespread analytical applications. Their excellent characteristics including high sensitivity and selectivity, low limits of detection (LODs), and the possibility of simultaneous multi-element detection for metallic and non-metallic species make them ideal detectors as a unique solution for many analytical problems. Different types of atomic spectrometric detectors coupled to GC, including those based on atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS), atomic fluorescence spectrometry (AFS), plasma atomic emission spectrometry/mass spectrometry (AES/MS), are discussed in this article, primarily in terms of operational characteristics, analytical performance and practical applications.
