Abstract:Polycaprolactone (PCL) has the advantages of good biocompatibility, appropriate biodegradability, non-toxicity, flexibility, and processability. As a result, PCL-based foams can successfully work in bone tissue engineering, medical patches, drug delivery, reinforcing materials, and other applications. A promising technology for producing PCL foam products is supercritical CO 2 (ScCO 2 ) foaming technology, which avoids using organic solvents, is green, and has low foaming agent costs. However, due to the limitations of ScCO 2 foaming technology, it is no longer possible to use this technology alone to meet current production requirements. Therefore, ScCO 2 foaming technology must combine with other technologies to develop PCL foam products with better performance and matching requirements. This paper systematically reviews the technological development of ScCO 2 foaming in producing PCL foams. The molding process of ScCO 2 foaming and the conventional preparation process of PCL foam products are discussed comprehensively, including the preparation process, advantages, and disadvantages, challenges faced, etc. Six combined technologies for ScCO 2 foaming in the production of PCL foams and the applications of PCL foams are presented. Finally, the future remaining research for producing PCL foams by ScCO 2 foaming is analyzed.

Generation of Biocompatible PCL Foams by Supercritical Foaming

Abstract:In this work, polycaprolactone (PCL) foams were generated by a supercritical CO2 (SC-CO2) assisted process. These foams can find application in tissue engineering as scaffolds, which require specific biological and morphological properties. SC-CO2 foaming process was carried out under different pressure and temperature conditions, in order to study the influence of these operating parameters on the final samples morphology. These polymeric foams were then analyzed by scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) in order to observe their internal structure. The performed analyses showed the influence of pressure and temperature on the external shape and on the morphology of these polymeric foams, in particular on the pore size. Pressures of 100, 150, 200 and 250 bar and temperatures of 40 and 60°C were tested as operating variables. The PCL foams obtained at 40°C and 200 bar presented the lowest value of the average pores diameter (i.e., 85 ± 24 μm); this value was about 7 times lower than that of the foams produced operating at 40°C and 100 bar (622 ± 62 μm). These results confirmed the high versatility of the SC-CO2 foaming that allowed to generate PCL foams with tunable morphological characteristics.

Abstract:The concept of biodegradable plastics is of considerable interest with respect to solid waste accumulation. Greater efforts have been made in developing degradable biological materials without any environmental pollution to replace the traditional plastics. Among numerous kinds of degradable polymers, polycaprolactone sometimes called PCL, an aliphatic polyester and biocompatible thermoplastic, is currently a most promising and popular material with the brightest development prospect and was considered as the ‘green’ eco friendly material. The application for this biodegradable plastic includes controlled drug releases, tissue engineering, bone scaffolds, packaging and, compost bags etc. This review will provide information on current PCL development, material properties of PCL and its composites, and also its wide spectrum applications.

Abstract:<p>Recently, biodegradable macromolecules have been highly desired as a promising alternative for traditional oil-based plastics to work out the eco crisis and biological health problems triggered by microplastics. Herein, we presented a simple, effective, environmentally friendly and CO<sub>2</sub>-based foaming methodology for fabricating ultra-low-density poly (lactic acid)/carbon nanotube (PLA/CNTs) nanocomposite foam. By the gradual incorporation of CNTs, three kinds of networks generated in PLA/CNTs nanocomposites and had a distinct reinforcement influence on their melt viscoelasticity, which testified by transmission electron microscope, electrical conductivity and rheological property measurements, severally. Specifically, the storage modulus of PLA/CNTs nanocomposites were 3 orders of magnitude higher in contrast to pure PLA. Interestingly, relative to that under regular differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), a double melting peak phenomenon appeared in the high-pressure DSC curves of diverse PLA specimens. Biodegradable PLA/CNTs nanocomposite foam was successfully fabricated with a super-high volume expansion ratio (VER) of 49.6 times, which could offer a promising strategy for developing other thermoplastic polyester foams with ultra-high VER to obtain some unique functional attributes.</p>

Abstract:Abstract Functional polycaprolactone (PCL) has great potential for applications in biomedical areas. This review summarizes the recent progress in the chemical synthesis of functional PCL. The functional PCL can be synthesized by (a) homopolymerization or copolymerization of functional ε-caprolactone (ε-CL), (b) copolymerization of 2-methylene-1-3-dioxepane with functional vinyl monomers, or (c) copolymerization of ε-CL with functional carbonate monomers. This review presents the recent trends in the synthesis of functional PCL and its biomedical applications.

Abstract:Developing poly(lactic acid) (PLA)-based biodegradable polymer foams with high performance is crucial for sustainable energy conservation and the ecological environment. In this work, by applying poly(lactide-co-caprolactone) (PLCL) as a compatibilizer, the block polymer of poly(l-lactic) acid (PLLA)-b-polycaprolactone (PCL) with a long-chain branched structure was prepared by reactive processing. By utilizing the difference between the glass-transition temperature (T g) and melting temperature (T m) of PLA and PCL, PLLA-b-PCL-PLCL foams with a PCL chain as the foaming phase and an oriented PLLA chain as the enhancing phase were prepared by establishing a solid-phase hot drawing@supercritical CO2 foaming method. The incorporation of PLCL links significantly improved the interfacial compatibility between PLLA and PCL phases and chain entanglements, exhibiting strain-hardening behavior and leading to an improvement in the stretchability of the block polymer. In the hot drawing process in the range of T g(PLA)–T m(PLA), both PLLA and PCL phases were elongated along the drawing direction, and with an increasing draw ratio, the orientation factor and the crystallinity of the two phases increased evidently, accompanied by the formation of a shish–kebab crystalline structure. In the subsequent foaming process in the range of T g(PCL)–T m(PCL), the molecular chains of the PLLA phase were frozen and the retention of the orientation factor reached over 90%, while under CO2, crystallinity and crystallite size increased and a more perfect crystalline structure formed for the PCL phase. With an increasing draw ratio, the saturated dissolved amount of CO2 increased and the cell density and cell size of foam reached 5.13 × 109 cells/cm3 and 4.06 μm, respectively. The fibrillar structures of the PLLA phase appeared on the cell wall, while the tensile strength and modulus of foam reached as high as 65.9 MPa and 1.01 GPa, respectively. As a result, a super-strong PLA-based microcellular foam with dense micropores and highly oriented microfibrillar structures was constructed.

Abstract:Abstract Polycaprolactone (PCL) is a biodegradable polyester that has advantages over other biopolymers, making it an extensively researched polymer. PCL is a hydrophobic, slow-degrading, synthetic polymer making it particularly interesting for the preparation of long-term implantable devices and a variety of drug delivery systems. Recently, PCL has been used for additional applications including food packaging and tissue engineering. In this chapter, the processing methods and characterization of PCL will be discussed. The chapter will summarize the synthesis of poly( α -hydroxy acid) and the ring-opening polymerization of PCL. Discussion on the biodegradability of PCL will be reviewed. The biomedical applications of PCL, such as, drug-delivery systems, medical devices, and tissue engineering will be also summarized. Finally, the chapter will conclude with a characterization section outlining recent studies focusing on PCL based composites and films.

Abstract:Expanded poly (lactic acid) (EPLA) is a promising bio-material with ultra-low density, thermal insulation, cushioning properties, as well as the ability to be fabricated products in complex shapes. However, the time consuming of inducing double melt peaks of PLA and the complex two-steps process of steam-sintering assisted supercritical CO 2 foaming is inevitable since PLA belongs crystalline polymer. To develop a facile and simple method to produce EPLA foams with functions, we used the bulk polymerization of liquid reactants to form a sintering layer between PLA beads. Meanwhile, carbon nanotubes (CNT) were synchronously introduced and distributed in the sintering layer. And a unique EPLA foam with functional sintering layer was produced using supercritical CO 2 foaming technology. The reported method could prepare EPLA foam with high expansion ratio of 8.5 times and high cell density of 8.25 × 10 8 cell/cm 3 . Compared with other methods, the novel EPLA foams exhibited excellent tensile strength and compressive strength, superior electrical conductivity of 0.12 S/m, electromagnetic shielding ability of 99% in the X-band at CNT content of 2.68 wt .%, as well as sensitive and accurate stress-sensing function. It facilitates the development of novel manufacturing technology and the expansion of applications fields of EPLA foam.

Abstract:Biodegradable foams are a potential substitute for most fossil-fuel-derived polymer foams currently used in the cushion furniture-making industry. Thermoplastic starch (TPS) and poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) are biodegradable polymers, although their poor compatibility does not support the foam-forming process. In this study, we investigated the effect of polyethylene glycol (PEG) with or without silane A (SA) on the foam density, cell structure and tensile properties of TPS/PBAT blends. The challenges in foam forming were explored through various temperature and pressure values under supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2) conditions. The obtained experimental results indicate that PEG and SA act as a plasticizer and compatibilizer, respectively. The 50% (TPS with SA + PEG)/50% PBAT blends generally produce foams that have a lower foam density and better cell structure than those of 50% (TPS with PEG)/50% PBAT blends. The tensile property of each 50% (TPS with SA + PEG)/50% PBAT foam is generally better than that of each 50% (TPS with PEG)/50% PBAT foam.
Fabrication of Highly Interconnected Poly(ε-caprolactone)/cellulose Nanofiber Composite Foams by Microcellular Foaming and Leaching Processes

Abstract:In this study, microcellular polycaprolactone (PCL)/sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3)/cellulose nanofiber (CNF) composite foams with highly interconnected porous structures were successfully fabricated by microcellular foaming and particle leaching processes. Supercritical CO2 (scCO2) served as a physical foaming agent, NaHCO3 was chosen as a chemical foaming agent and porogen, and CNF acted as a heterogeneous nucleating agent. The effect of scCO2, NaHCO3, and CNF on pore structures and the cofoaming mechanism were investigated. The results indicated that the addition of NaHCO3 and CNF increased the melt strength of the PCL matrix significantly. During the foaming process, the presence of CNF can form a rigid network due to the hydrogen bonding or mechanical entanglement between individual nanofibers, improving the nucleating efficiency but slowing down the cell growth rate. Additionally, due to the interaction of "soft" PCL matrix and "hard" domains in a PCL-based composite during the foaming process, together with the NaHCO3 leaching process, highly interconnected cell structures appeared. The obtained PCL/NaHCO3/CNF composite foams had a cell size of 15.8 μm and cell density of 6.3 × 107 cells/cm3, as well as an open-cell content of 82%. The reported strategy in this paper may provide the guidelines and data supports for the fabrication of a PCL-based porous scaffold.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:The last few decades have witnessed significant advances in the development of polymeric-based foam materials. These materials find several practical applications in our daily lives due to their characteristic properties such as low density, thermal insulation, and porosity, which are important in packaging, in building construction, and in biomedical applications, respectively. The first foams with practical applications used polymeric materials of petrochemical origin. However, due to growing environmental concerns, considerable efforts have been made to replace some of these materials with biodegradable polymers. Foam processing has evolved greatly in recent years due to improvements in existing techniques, such as the use of supercritical fluids in extrusion foaming and foam injection moulding, as well as the advent or adaptation of existing techniques to produce foams, as in the case of the combination between additive manufacturing and foam technology. The use of supercritical CO2 is especially advantageous in the production of porous structures for biomedical applications, as CO2 is chemically inert and non-toxic; in addition, it allows for an easy tailoring of the pore structure through processing conditions. Biodegradable polymeric materials, despite their enormous advantages over petroleum-based materials, present some difficulties regarding their potential use in foaming, such as poor melt strength, slow crystallization rate, poor processability, low service temperature, low toughness, and high brittleness, which limits their field of application. Several strategies were developed to improve the melt strength, including the change in monomer composition and the use of chemical modifiers and chain extenders to extend the chain length or create a branched molecular structure, to increase the molecular weight and the viscosity of the polymer. The use of additives or fillers is also commonly used, as fillers can improve crystallization kinetics by acting as crystal-nucleating agents. Alternatively, biodegradable polymers can be blended with other biodegradable polymers to combine certain properties and to counteract certain limitations. This work therefore aims to provide the latest advances regarding the foaming of biodegradable polymers. It covers the main foaming techniques and their advances and reviews the uses of biodegradable polymers in foaming, focusing on the chemical changes of polymers that improve their foaming ability. Finally, the challenges as well as the main opportunities presented reinforce the market potential of the biodegradable polymer foam materials.

Abstract:We describe a straightforward strategy for a new family of functional polycaprolactones (PCL) via the Passerini multicomponent polymerization (P-MCP) of 6oxohexanoic acid and various isocyanides. Room temperature polymerization of tert-butyl isocyanide (1), 2,6-dimethylphenyl isocyanide (2), mOEG4 isocyanide (3), 5-isocyanopent-1-ene (4), and 5-isocyanopent-1-yne (5) with 6-oxohexanoic acid in CH2C12 generated PCL analogues (Pl P5) with different pendent groups amide-linked to the epsilon-position of PCL backbone. Furthermore, copolymerization of a mixture of isocyanides 1 and 3 in different molar ratios with 6oxohexanoic acid produced copolymers (P6 P9) with adjustable properties. To demonstrate the high versatility of this platform polymer, polymer P4 with pendent alkene group was further modified with glucose via the thiol ene click reaction. The structures of these (co)polymers were confirmed by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectroscopy. The thermal properties of these (co)polymers were examined by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). All these polymers are amorphous with variable glass transition temperatures (T-g) depending on the side groups. For the copolymers, the dependence of T(g)s on comonomer composition was well predicted by the Fox equation. Degradation of water-soluble polymer P3 in aqueous solutions was investigated by H-1 NMR and SEC. It was revealed that P3 was stable in D2O or pD = 5.8 phosphate buffer (PB) up to 15 days, while it completely degraded in basic condition over a period of 6 h and in acidic condition over a period of 24 h. Interestingly, polymer P3 even degraded steadily in pD = 7.4 PB by a random hydrolysis mechanism. Two polymer samples were examined to be nontoxic. Thus, this novel class of PCL analogues can be easily engineered to tailor its material properties and degradation behavior and may have great potential as new degradable materials to meet biomedical applications.
Biodegradable Ultra-Large Expansion and High Open-Cell PLA/PBAT Foams Fabricated by Supercritical CO2 Foaming for Selective Oil/Water Absorption

Abstract:With the advancement of society, the issue of oil pollution is escalating, therefore we propose a straightforward and efficient approach for fabricating fully biodegradable poly (lactic acid) (PLA)/poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) foams with exceptional selective oil-absorption capabilities through the integration of melt blending and supercritical CO 2 (scCO 2 ) foaming techniques. The PLA90 foams, activated at 11 MPa and temperatures ranging from 105 °C to 110 °C, exhibit an expansion ratio of 44 and a highly interconnected open-cell structure with an open-cell content exceeding 80%, effectively mitigating cell shrinkage occurrences. The 105 °C-triggered PLA90 foam displays pronounced lipophilicity/hydrophobicity, accelerated oil-absorption kinetics, and elevated oil-absorption capacity. Specifically, the equilibrium absorption capacities for cyclohexane and silicone are 12.8 g/g and 20.1 g/g, respectively. Moreover, the maximum absorption capacity decline rate for silicone oil stands at a mere 13.4% over 10 absorption–desorption cycles. The findings presented in this study establish a theoretical framework and offer empirical evidence to support the development of fully biodegradable, high-performance, and reusable oil-absorption materials.

Abstract:A novel degradable flexible polyurethane (PU) foam was prepared by varying the ratio of poly(propylene oxide) (PPO) and triarm poly(propylene oxide)-block-polylactide copolymer (PPO-b-PLA), and was compared with conventional PU foams based on toluene diisocyanate (TDI) and PPO. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed that introducing PLA segments were able to result in a transition from a microphase separated state to a microphase mixed state and improve the microphase mixing. The changes in structure and domain size distribution associated with this transition were found to have led to enhanced mechanical properties such as the tensile strength, the elongation at break, and the rebound resilience for the PU foams containing PLA segments. Furthermore, it was observed that the network structure was destroyed by hydrolytic degradation in alkali solution (10 wt%/vol%) at 80 degrees C for 50 h, and that as the PLA content increased, the degradation rate of PU foams enhanced. Abstract:The process of foaming poly(caprolactone)-based composites using supercritical carbon dioxide was analyzed. The impact of the conditions of the solid-foam production process on the process efficiency and properties of porous structures was investigated. The novel application of various types of porogens—hydroxyapatite, nanocellulose, carboxymethylcellulose, and graphene oxide—was tested in order to modify the properties and improve the quality of solid foams, increasing their usefulness in specialized practical applications. The study showed a significant influence of the foaming process conditions on the properties of solid foams. The optimal process parameters were determined to be pressure 18 MPa, temperature 70 °C, and time 1 h in order to obtain structures with appropriate properties for applications in biomedical engineering, and the most promising material for their production was selected: a composite containing 5% hydroxyapatite or 0.2% graphene oxide.

Abstract:Biodegradable cellulosic pulp foams with robustness and water resistance are urgently needed in nowadays to replace petroleum-based plastic foams for environmental sustainability. In this work, a facile protocol to fabricate robust poly-lactic acid (PLA) coated cellulose foams (PCCF) was developed through a combined water-based foaming and PLA melt-coating process using pulp as the raw material. In the synthesis, the so-called PLA coating was realized through melting PLA powders dispersed between fibers by an in-situ heating and post cooling process. Performance tests revealed that the incorporation of PLA coating significantly enhances mechanical strength, water stability, and biodegradability of the synthesized PCCF samples compared with conventional cellulosic foams. Specifically, the low-density PCCF were observed with mechanical strength up to 81.24 kPa, high water stability, and more than 95% degradation in 56 days. As the fabrication process is simple and pulp is highly cost competitive, our proposed synthesis strategy makes the PCCF a promising substitute for petroleum-based plastic foams at large-scale production.

Abstract:Poly(propylene carbonate-co-phthalate) (PPC-P) is an amorphous copolymer of aliphatic polycarbonate and aromatic polyester; it possesses good biodegradability, superior mechanical performances, high thermal properties, and excellent affinity with CO2. Hence, we fabricate PPC-P foams in an autoclave by using subcritical CO2 as a physical blowing agent. Both saturation pressure and foaming temperature affect the foaming behaviors of PPC-P, including CO2 adsorption and desorption performance, foaming ratio, cell size, porosity, cell density, and nucleation density, which are investigated in this research. Moreover, the low-cost PPC-P/nano-CaCO3 and PPC-P/starch composites are prepared and foamed using the same procedure. The obtained PPC-P-based foams show ultra-high expansion ratio and refined microcellular structures simultaneously. Besides, nano-CaCO3 can effectively improve PPC-P's rheological properties and foamability. In addition, the introduction of starch into PPC-P can lead to a large number of open cells. Beyond all doubt, this work can certainly provide both a kind of new biodegradable PPC-P-based foam materials and an economic methodology to make biodegradable plastic foams. These foams are potentially applicable in the packaging, transportation, and food industry.

Abstract:Polymeric materials have gained immense significance in the field of biomedicine. Among these materials, poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) stands out as a prominent biocompatible and biodegradable polyester. This polymer has become extremely attractive in various fields due to its versatile properties and potential application in regenerative medicine, tissue engineering, and drug delivery. The unique combination of the desirable properties of PCL such as non-toxicity, low melting point and glass transition temperature, mechanical strength, compatibility with other polymers and therapeutic agents, and ease of processability makes this synthetic polymer an ideal material for a wide range of applications. Due to its ability to facilitate cell attachment and proliferation, mechanical compatibility with biological tissues, and controlled release of therapeutic agents, PCL is utilized for the fabrication of implants, scaffolds, and drug delivery systems. Herein, we aimed to provide the current state-of-the-art regarding PCL-based formulations including nanoparticles, microparticles, nanofibers, micelles, and films, and their diverse biomedical applications in tissue engineering, wound healing, drug delivery, and regenerative medicine. Furthermore, we discuss the active ingredients, composition, investigation status, and route of administration of these formulations. This paper also delves into various methods of preparing PCL-based formulations, including conventional techniques such as electrospinning and solvent casting as well as emerging methods, namely 3D printing, self-assembly, and microfluidics approaches, shedding light on their advantages and limitations. Commercial biomedical applications are another area that is addressed. Overall, this paper provides valuable insights into the advancements and potential of this biodegradable polymer in the biomedical field.

Abstract:Expanded polystyrene will account for 5.3% of total global plastic production in 2021 and is widely used for food packaging due to its excellent moisture resistance and thermal insulation. However, some of these packages are often used only once before being discarded, generating large amounts of environmentally harmful plastic waste. A very attractive alternative to the conventional methods used for polymer processing is the use of supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) since it has mass-transfer properties adapted to the foam morphology, generating different path lengths for the diffusion of active compounds within its structure and can dissolve a wide range of organic molecules under supercritical conditions. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of operational variables on the process of caffeic acid (CA) impregnation and subsequent foaming of polylactic acid (PLA) as well as two PLA/poly(butylene-co-terephthalate-adipate) (PBAT) blends using scCO2. The results showed an increase in the degree of crystallinity of the CA-impregnated samples due to the nucleation effect of the active compound. On the other hand, SEM micrographs of both films and foams showed significant differences due to the presence of PBAT and its low miscibility with PLA. Finally, the results obtained in this work contribute to the knowledge of the important parameters to consider for the implementation of the impregnation and foaming process of PLA and PLA/PBAT blends with potential use in food packaging.

Abstract:Supercritical fluid technology and supercritical carbon dioxide were used for the preparation of hybrid materials – scaffolds from PCL foams and chitosan aerogel beads. In a simple straightforward processing method, the advanced biomaterials for potential tissue engineering applications were fabricated, and loaded with indomethacin as a model drug. The obtained aerogels, foams, and scaffolds were evaluated through various characterization techniques: N2 adsorption-desorption analysis, TGA/DSC, microscope/SEM, and FTIR. The results revealed that the addition of mesoporous chitosan aerogels to the macroporous structure of PCL influenced the textural, morphological, and thermal properties of the initial foams. Unlike foams, the scaffolds showed a mesoporous structure, and, consequently, as the aerogels share in the formulation increased, larger specific surface areas. Scaffolds obtained under different conditions (40 °C/150 bar and 60 °C/200 bar) showed different swelling behavior and degradation. Lastly, the indomethacin showed distinct release profiles, depending on the formation and deposition conditions.
