Abstract:Chinese poetry has long been continuously popular in our history, and has aroused the interest and passion of foreign countries and scholars. Due to the differences in diverse languages and cultures, cultural filtering is inevitable and plays an important role in cross-cultural communication. This paper mainly analyzes the Willis Barnstone’s translation of Snow, which was written by Mao Zedong, the Chairman and poet of China. And other translations will be used as references to discover the manifestations of "cultural filtering" in translations and how does the translator deal with the difference brought by this foreignization translation, as well as the compensation strategies

Abstract:Translation studies conducted since China’s reform and opening up has played a pivotal role in the establishment of translation as a discipline in this country.Whether in introducing insightful theoretical perspectives on the translational practice,laying a conceptual foundation for the discipline,promoting translation-related pedagogy, enriching the teaching of foreign languages,fostering a historical understanding of the cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries,or enhancing China’s soft power,remarkable achievements have been made by Chinese translation scholars.Having gained its disciplinary status and succeeded in refuting popularly held misassumptions such as"translation is not amenable to theory"or"theories of translation are useless,"however,how translation studies should further develop itself in China poses a formidable challenge to its practitioners.This paper takes up the challenge by reflecting on some of the burning issues of the moment,including those over the exclusive adoption of the cultural approach to the study of translation,the dearth of translation-specific theoretical sources,and the subordination of translation to some better established disciplines.

Abstract:Communication Studies in Chinese mainland start from the most practical spheres of audience research,media management and environmental studies.Introductory articles about Western communication theories and methods also account for a high proportion.Studies on the media literacy and public communication appear until relatively recent years,and the number of organizational communication and interpersonal communication research is still fairly small. The number of studies based on the cases of Chinese mainland is in exponential increase.Moreover,with the increase of international exchanges and the expansion of researcher's academic view in communication,there are more research findings in the communication mechanisms of European countries and the United States,especially in public communication, of which China showed an obvious lack.

Abstract:Schumann's theory of acculturation is one of the most representative theory in SLA.From the hermeneutic perspective,the paper re-interpreted and constructed the meta-theoretical issues of the theory of acculturation,and proved that it is effective in SLA.From the communication behaviorism perspective, it pointed out that the construction of a good environment of language communication will facilitate the acculturation.

Abstract:Studies of mass communication in China since the year 1978 have undergone three important stages of development.Despite all the criticisms and doubts therein,remarkable progress has been made.At the same time,there are quite a few problems that are worthy of attention: measure-based researches outweigh basic ones,there exists a remarkable rupture inside the discipline which calls for better communication,the right of speaking and power of influence at major issues are weak,and the academic system in the field under discussion is far from sound.To usher in better development in the future,we should further strengthen theoretical construction on the basis of the present empirical studies,pay more attention to rewriting the history of mass communication thoughts,make more in-depth case studies from the angle of anthropology and sociology,and make critical and interpretive studies on media culture.

Abstract:Ever since the founding of the People's Republic of China,great contributions of communications have been made,so have certain mistakes.This paper discusses the development history of communications and its relation with times change.On this basis,the paper makes the theoretical demonstration in four aspects: the debate of the concepts of international and international communications,the coordination of domestic overall situation and overseas whole prospect,significant negative events at home and their first external reporting,and the differences in ideology between China and foreign countries and external publicity strategies.

Abstract:This paper traces back to the historical heritage of translation studies in Tsinghua University in its earlier stage. Abstract:At present,China's communication research confronts double weakness:On the one hand,the research is relatively unsubstantial.It is short of either persuasive circumstances or research achievements to prove innovation.On the other hand,it lacks corresponding historical consciousness and narrative skills,resulting in its blank historical significance.In other words,there is no real history for China's communication research.Under this circumstance,we should use the beneficial resources of contemporary historical researches as reference,reconsider the relationships of the past and the history,time and structure,open the historical space through theoretical exploration,and try to deal with time in structure.In this way,we can transfer the old research method to a new one:to suspend history,break the time line,question the past and attempt to reconstruct our narration of China's communication research through multi-angles and multi-methodologies,in order to achieve its historical values.

A Reflection on the Literary Relationship between China and the West

Abstract:Since the establishment of Chinese comparative literature,the study of the literary relationship between China and the West has wielded groundbreaking influence on Chinese literary study.However there is a shared anxiety among Chinese scholars that Chinese literature is isolated and excluded from the "World." Therefore it is held that Chinese literature should go to the "World" and be accepted by the "World." Consequently the major method of the study of the literary relationship between China and the West is influence study and reception of comparative literature.Nevertheless,it is possible that we overrate the influence from the West and underrate increasingly internationalized community that will lead people from different places to confront similar phenomenon in the same age and draw similar conclusion of reflection without direct influence from each other.I call the study of the similarity relationship the study of internationality.

Abstract:When the discipline of communication was established,the structural functionalism,represented by Colombia School,was chosen as the research paradigm instead of that stood for by Chicago School.Despite Colombia School's little advantage on theory and method,its theoretical outcome could be more easily used by ideology,its quantitative method could provide the evidence in an easier way for the authorities to make the decision,and its research paradigm could be used more easily to define the boundary of communication discipline and bring more resources for it.Therefore,Schramm,who was eager to lay the border of the professionalism of communication,chose Colombia School without too much consideration.However,this choice has led to the dilemma that communication is not only highly controlled by ideology,but also formed as a very conservative and closed disciplinarity.All this has contributed to the doubt of the legality of communication discipline since 1970s.

Abstract:Raymond Williams, the eminent British Marxist literary theorist, was introduced to China in the late 1980s, and his theories have since been increasingly attractive to China’s literary and cultural studies. He not only touched upon some of the fundamental issues of Marxist literary theory, such as ideology, culture, hegemony and aesthetics, but also developed it with his dynamic construction of a sort of cultural materialism, thus bridging between Marxist socio-historical and aesthetic criticism and cultural and linguistic factors. While literary and cultural theory is in decline in the West, Williams’s legacy is still appreciated in international circles, which ought to be cherished and inherited by us Chinese scholars in our studies of world literature and culture.

Abstract:China is undergoing a historical moment of social and cultural development. It is therefore very necessary to draw on " the best of what has been thought and said in the world" for China's present cultural endeavor and innovative pursuits. This paper,taking Fei Xiaotong's notion of "cultural awareness" as a springboard, tries to examine the ideas and concepts of cultural criticism what was developed by the British cultural critics such as Matthew Arnold, F. R. Leavis and Raymond Williams. Such notions as "the redemptive role of culture" , "the great tradition" , and "the common culture" , etc. will be explored in light of their relevance to the current transformations of Chinese culture and society.

Abstract:"China Question of Western Postcolonial Translation Theory" deals with how western postcolonial translation theory is read, interpreted and applied in China, as well as how the reception in China influences revision and development of the theory. Western postcolonial translation theory, though frequently quoted and highly influential in China, is sometimes incapable of effectively explaining Chinese translation practice and convincing Chinese readers. Based on the analysis of the encounter between postcolonial translation theory and China, three suggestions are proposed to revise translation theory so as to build a "greener," healthier hetero-generative ecology of languages and cultures.
