Abstract:Expressing complex curves with simple parametric curve segments is widely used in computer graphics, CAD and so on. This paper applies rational quadratic B-spline curves to give a global C 1 continuous approximation to a large class of plane parametric curves including rational parametric curves. Its application in approximate implicitization is also explored. The approximated parametric curve is first divided into intrinsic triangle convex segments which can be efficiently approximated with rational quadratic Bézier curves. With this approximation, we keep the convexity and the cusp (sharp) points of the approximated curve with simple computations. High accuracy approximation is achieved with a small number of quadratic segments. Experimental results are given to demonstrate the operation and efficiency of the algorithm.

Abstract:We derive interior curvature bounds for admissible solutions of a class of curvature equations subject to affine Dirichlet data, generalizing a well-known estimate of Pogorelov for equations of Monge-Ampere type. For equations for which convexity of the solution is the natural ellipticity assumption, the curvature bound is proved for solutions with C-1,C-1 Dirichlet data. We also use the curvature bounds to improve and extend various existence results for the Dirichlet and Plateau problems.
Approximate Implicitization of Planar Parametric Curves using Quadratic Splines1)

Abstract:A quadratic Bezier spline with G1-continuity is given to approximate a planar parametric curve. In its construction, the parametric curve is first divided into several segments. A rational quadratic Bezier curve is then applied to approximate each segment and recursive subdivision for the segment may be used if the approximation error is out of the given range. With this method, we not only keep the shape but also the direction of the parametric curve with simple computation using quadratic curves. High accuracy of the approximation is also achieved with relatively small number of conics. Parametric and implicit representations are two main forms for planar curves in CAGD. Each of the two representations has its own advantages. With the parametric representation, x = x(t)=d(t);y = y(t)=d(t), where x(t);y(t);d(t) are often polynomials (i.e. the rational form), it is easy to get every point in the curve and plot it. While for the implicit form f(x;y) = 0, it's easy to determine whether a point is on the curve. The availability of both often results in simpler computation. For example, with the two forms available, we can get the intersection of two planar curves by solving a one-variable equation. For any rational parametric curves, we can always convert it into implicit form. The process is called implicitization. While the converse, called parametrization, is not always true. The implicitization techniques include some classic algebraic geometry theories, such as the resultant based method, the Groebner basis method, the characteristic set method, and others such as moving lines and surfaces. Abstract:An algorithm is proposed to give a global approximation of an implicit real plane algebraic curve with rational quadratic B-spline curves. The algorithm consists of four steps: topology determination, curve segmentation, segment approximation and curve tracing. Due to the detailed geometric analysis, high accuracy of approximation may be achieved with a small number of quadratic segments. The final approximation keeps many important geometric features of the original curve such as the topology, convexity and sharp points. Our method is implemented and experiments show that it may achieve better approximation bound with less segments than previously known methods. We also extend the method to approximate spatial algebraic curves.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel algorithm for computing the area formulation of simple irregular polygons with arc based on the requirements of the house estate management department. The algorithm proposed has two advantages over other algorithms, higher precision and more comprehensible area formulation. Distinguished from other algorithms, it is able to process the irregular polygons with arcs. This algorithm has been successfully implemented in the 'intelligent house area check and proportion CAD system', applied in the department of Haining house estate management, Zhejiang province.

Abstract:To resolve the problem of approximating scattered points with closed boundary curves constraint, several methods has been analyzed, and a central-point based method has been given here. The key process is to construct inner curves connecting the central point of whole region and middle point of each boundary curve, and divide the whole region into n piece of rectangular patches, so we can construct a base surface with Coons patch. Abstract:In recent years, with the development of 3D data acquisition equipments, the study on reverse engineering has become more and more important. However, the existing methods for parameterization can hardly ensure that the parametric domain is rectangular, and the parametric curve grid is regular. In order to overcome these limitations, we present a novel method for parameterization of triangular meshes in this paper. The basic idea is twofold: first, because the isotherms in the steady temperature do not intersect with each other, and are distributed uniformly, no singularity (fold-over) exists in the parameterization; second, a 3D harmonic equation is solved by the finite element method to obtain the steady temperature field on a 2D triangular mesh surface with four boundaries. Therefore, our proposed method avoids the embarrassment that it is impossible to solve the 2D quasi-harmonic equation on the 2D triangular mesh without the parametric values at mesh vertices. Furthermore, the isotherms on the temperature field are taken as a set of iso-parametric curves on the triangular mesh surface. The other set of iso-parametric curves can be obtained by connecting the points with the same chord-length on the isotherms sequentially. The obtained parametric curve grid is regular, and distributed uniformly, and can map the triangular mesh surface to the unit square domain with boundaries of mesh surface to boundaries of parametric domain, which ensures that the triangular mesh surface or point cloud can be fitted with the NURBS surface.

Abstract:Methods for curve modeling with cubic algebraic curves based on geometric constraints are introduced in this paper. A 1-parameter family of cubic curves with four given points as well as two tangent lines at the endpoints is constructed in the first part of the paper. A 1-parameter family and 2-parameter family of cubic curve constructions are presented for interpolating two given endpoints and two given tangent lines as well as two given curvatures at the endpoints in the last part of the paper.

Abstract:This paper presents a method for tracing a planar implicit curve f(x, y)=0 on a rectangular region based on continuation scheme. First, according to the starting track-point and the starting track-direction of the curve, make a new function F(x, y)=0 where the same curve with f(x, y)=0 is defined. Then we trace the curve between the two domains where F(x, y)>0 and F(x, y)<0 alternately, according to the two rules presented in this paper. Equal step size or adaptive step size can be used, when we trace the curve. An irregular planar implicit curve (such as the curve with large curvatures at some points on the curve), can be plotted if an adaptive step size is used. Moreover, this paper presents a scheme to search for the multiple points on the curve. Our method has the following advantages: (1) it can plot C0 planar implicit curves; (2) it can plot the planar implicit curves with multiple points; (3) by the help of using the two rules, our method does not need to compute the tangent vector at the points on the curve, and directly searches for the direction of the tracing curve; (4) the tracing procedure costs only one of two evaluations of function f(x, y)=0 per moving step, while most existing similar methods cost more evaluations of the function.

Abstract:Crofton formula has attracted much attention in differential geometry, which can be used to calculate the length of the curve. This article starts with the concept and definition of Crofton formula on the sphere, and gives out approximate calculation formula of a curve on spherical surface based on surf segmentation. The triangular grid of the geodesic dome and Marsaglia Polar Method are adopted to generate random points for an equal division of the sphere. This article takes the circular arc on the sphere as an example, through MATLAB simulation, the length was calculated by approximation of Crofton’s formula. This calculation method can be extended to approximate calculation of the length of any curve in space, which will have a profound impact on practical engineering applications.

Abstract:Curvatures on the surface are important geometric invariants and are widely used in different area of research. Examples include feature recognition, segmentation, or shape analysis. Therefore, it is of interest to develop an effective algorithm to approximate the curvatures accurately. The classical methods to compute these quantities involve the estimation of the normal and some involve the computation of the second derivatives of the 3 coordinate functions under the parameterization. Error is inevitably introduced because of the inaccurate approximation of the second derivatives and the normal. In this paper, we propose several novel methods to compute curvatures on the surface using the conformal parameterization. With the conformal parameterization, the conformal factor function λ can be defined on the surface. Mean curvature (H) and Gaussian curvatures (K) can then be computed with the conformal Factor (λ). It involves computing only the derivatives of the function λ, instead of the 3 coordinate functions and the normal. We also introduce a technique to compute H from K and vice versa, using the parallel surface.
