Abstract:Computing the intersection between two parametric surfaces (SSI) is one of the most fundamental problems in geometric and solid modeling. Maintaining the SSI topology is critical to its computation robustness. We propose a topology-driven hybrid symbolic-numeric framework to approximate rational parametric surface-surface intersection (SSI) based on a concept of interval algebraic topology analysis (IATA), which configures within a 4D interval box the SSI topology. We map the SSI topology to an algebraic system's solutions within the framework, classify and enumerate all topological cases as a mixture of four fundamental cases (or their specific sub-cases). Various complicated topological situations are covered, such as cusp points or curves, tangent points (isolated or not) or curves, tiny loops, self-intersections, or their mixtures. The theoretical formulation is also implemented numerically using advanced real solution isolation techniques, and computed within a topology-driven framework which maximally utilizes the advantages of the topology maintenance of algebraic analysis, the robustness of iterative subdivision, and the efficiency of forward marching. The approach demonstrates improved robustness under benchmark topological cases when compared with available open-source and commercial solutions, including IRIT, SISL, and Parasolid.

Abstract:Estimating principal curvatures and principal directions of a smooth surface represented by a triangular mesh is an important step in many CAD or graphics related tasks. This paper presents a new method for curvature tensor estimation on a triangular mesh by replacing flat triangles with triangular parametric patches. An improved local interpolation scheme of cubic triangular Bézier patches to vertices and vertex normals of triangle meshes is developed. Piecewise parametric surfaces that have C0 continuity across boundary curves of adjacent patches and G1 continuity at the joint vertices are obtained by the interpolation scheme. A closed form expression of Taubin integral–a 3×3 symmetric matrix in integral formulation–is derived based on the piecewise parametric surfaces. Principal curvatures and principal directions are then computed from the Taubin integral. The proposed method does not need to parameterize data points or solve a linear system which is usually required by other surface fitting methods. Compared to several state-of-the-art curvature estimation methods, the proposed method can generate more accurate results for general surface meshes. The experiments have demonstrated its accuracy, robustness and effectiveness.
Determining the Topology of Real Algebraic Surfaces

Abstract:An algorithm is proposed to determine the topology of an implicit real algebraic surface in ℝ3. The algorithm consists of three steps: surface projection, projection curve topology determination and surface patches composition. The algorithm provides a curvilinear wireframe of the surface and the surface patches of the surface determined by the curvilinear wireframe, which have the same topology as the surface. Most of the surface patches are curvilinear polygons. Some examples are used to show that our algorithm is effective.

Abstract:In this paper, we present formulae for evaluating differential quantities at vertices of triangular meshes that may approximate potential piecewise smooth surfaces with discontinuous normals or discontinuous curvatures at the joint lines. We also define the C (1) and C (2) discontinuity measures for surface meshes using changing rates of one-sided curvatures or changing rates of curvatures across mesh edges. The curvatures are computed discretely as of local interpolating surfaces that lie within a tolerance to the mesh. Together with proper estimation of local shape parameters, the obtained discontinuity measures own properties like sensitivity to salient joint lines and being scale invariant. A simple algorithm is finally developed for detection of C (1) or C (2) discontinuity joint lines on triangular meshes with even highly non-uniform triangulations. Several examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
A Family of Spacial PH Curves Represented by Algebraic-Trigonometric Functions and Their Applications

Abstract:A class of spacial curves are defined over the algebraic-trigonometric space ?=span{1,θ ···, θm+1,sinθ,cosθ,θsinθ,···,θncosθ}.By choosing proper integral kernels,the projection of the spacial integral curve on the xy-plane has intrinsic definition,or the whole spacial curve is a PH curve.The Cartesian coordinates of the curve can be explicitly evaluated by integrals of the predefined kernels. Besides, techniques of interpolation of integral curves with different integral kernels have been studied. Given the boundary data, the coefficients within the kernel functions are obtained by solving a system. Finally, we use PH curves to design a family of frames, which can be used to construct a rational swept surface. Experimental results show that the piecewise swept surface is G1continuous at the ridge line and is nearly G1continuous at the remaining junctions.

Abstract:How to obtain intersection of curves and surfaces is a fundamental problem in many areas such as computer graphics, CAD/CAM, computer animation, and robotics. Especially, how to deal with singular cases, such as tangency or superposition, is a key problem in obtaining intersection results. A method for solving the intersection problem based on the coordinate transformation is presented. With the Lagrange multiplier method, the minimum distance between the center of a circle and a quadric surface is given as well. Experience shows that the coordinate transformation could significantly simplify the method for calculating intersection results. The location of the tangent point is revised according to the tangency condition. It can improve the stability of the intersection of given curves and surfaces in singularity cases. The new algorithm is applied in a three dimensional CAD software (GEMS), produced by Tsinghua University.

Abstract:Conventional methods for solving intersections between two offset parametric surfaces often include iteratively using computationally expensive SSI (surface/surface intersections) algorithm. In addition, these methods ignore the relations between the intersection curves of parametric surfaces with different offset distances. The algorithm presented in this paper, makes full use of the topological relations between different intersection loops and calculates intersection loops with the help of previously calculated intersection loops. It first pre-processes two parametric surfaces to obtain the characteristic points, called topology transition points (TTPs), which can help in the subsequent finding of the topologies of the intersection curves. Then these points are categorized into several distinct groups, and we can determine the calculation strategy for searching initial points by analyzing the properties of these TTPs on the surfaces. Hence, all intersection curves can be marched from initial points by the tracing algorithm. The proposed algorithm could calculate intersection curves robustly and effectively, and has been tested to be capable of overcoming the degenerate conditions such as loop and singularities leaking that occur frequently in conventional algorithms.

Abstract:We present in this paper efficient and robust algebraic algorithms for computing intersection curves between torus and natural quadrics used in CAD, namely sphere, cylinder and cone. A proper local coordinate system (LCS) is chosen first. Under the chosen LCS, cylinders and cones are parametrized by their line generators, and the problem of computing intersections between tori and cylinders or cones are converted to the line/torus intersection problem. Then, cases that the intersections are conic sections are identified and computed in geometrical and intuitive ways. For all other cases, discrete intersection points are computed and sorted to form intersection curves. For torus/sphere intersection, we present algorithms to compute the intersection curves directly from explicit algebraic representations.

Abstract:Algebraic curves/surfaces are typical implicit curves/surfaces. They are used widely in CAD and computer graphics. For example, quadratic curve and quadric surface are used as primitive element in most modeling/CAD system. The implicit formulae for computing the intrinsic geometric invariant——Gaussian and mean curvature of an implicit surface are derived in the first part of this paper. The formulae for them are represented by determinant(s) over a simple term, the elements in which are all the derivatives of order one or two of the surface function. The intrinsic geometric invariant is used to study the geometric continuity between two implicit surfaces and the G 2 continuity conditions for two surfaces along their adjacent bound are derived in the second part of the paper. A G 2 blending surface between two given algebraic surfaces are constructed with Gaussian and mean curvature continuity in the last part of the paper, the blending surface itself is also algebraic surface with minimum order.

Abstract:The paper presents a new metheod for implicit algebraic surfaces intersection. From the view of visualization in science compute(VISC),the implicit algebraic surfaces act as the isosurface in three dimension scalar field. Then, the problem of solving for isosurface is transformed into the matters as following:look for the two surfaces' common voxel set;solve for the two algebraic surfaces' approximation - triangle facet in each voxel,and calculate their intersection line;combine all these line segments. The combination we got here is the intersection curve we want. This method is not only accurate, reliable, but also fit to various situations.

Abstract:Interpolation of data points is a fundamental problem in the field of CAD/CAM, geometric modeling and computer graphics and so on [1, 11-19]. Sampled or given data points are usually interpolated by using B-splines in many applications [1, 2, 3, 11-16, 19]. However, we also need to interpolate a set of infinitive data points, for instance, pieces of surfaces, textures, tiling and continuous functions defined on a subset of Euclidean space. Here we interpolate some surfaces as a whole instead of some sampled data points. The problem of finding fillet surfaces for a set of given surfaces can be considered as an example. We aim to construct a smooth surface in the whole domain, which interpolates these given surfaces defined on some sub-domains. In fact, some special cases have already been studied with different methods and view points. Given four boundary curves and corresponding derivatives along the input curves, the Coons patches are bicubically blended with the given curve data which consists of infinite data points [1, 5]. The CBarnhill, Birkhoff and Gordon approach for triangular Coons patches can be explained as follows. Suppose we are given three boundary curves. We seek a surface that interpolates to all three of them, namely, a transfinite triangular interpolant [1, 6]. More Coons type interpolants are proposed over triangles, and a general interpolant called N-sided surface patches is proposed by J. Gregory [7]. Abstract:In this paper, we present a novel parametric surfaces intersection algorithm based on discrete surfels. First the parametric surfaces are sampled as point sampling surfaces. Each point is called a surfel with geometric information attached. Then the surfels are resampled adaptively by error analysis. Adaptive octree is built to accelerate the intersection operations. Finally, the intersection lines are resulted after sorting these discrete intersection points. Experiments show that our algorithm is effective and easy to implement. The precision of the intersection lines is controllable.

Abstract:In reverse engineering, so as to obtain a feature-based parametrio model, surface feature extraction techniques are deeply studied in recent years. However, another same important problem that how to extract sectional feature curves from slicing data points is almost disregarded. Aiming at solving the issue, the discrete curvature estimating, data segmentation, feature recognition and constraint-based global optimization of slicing data are studied and realized. With these techniques, the best fitting curves can be acquired, and the continuity constraints between the curves can be satisfied too. The application proves that surface construction based on feature curves can greatly improve the efficiency of modeling and accuracy of model in reverse engineering.

Abstract:Commonly, surface/surface intersect algorithm is repeatedly used to solve the offset surface/surface intersections. It doesn't make full use of similarity of intersect curve topology to simple offset surface/surface intersection problem. The algorithm presented in this paper pre-processes two parametric surfaces to achieve points, called topology transition points, which produce an effect on intersect curve structure, number and location. According to topology transition points distribution graph, initial point search strategy and intersect curve topology can be fixed. The algorithm is tested, and can be proved to overcome the degenerate conditions such as loop leaking, singularity leaking and can calculate the initial point effectively.

Abstract:Conformal Geometric Algebra has been introduced into geographic information science as a mathematical theory because of its advantages in terms of uniform multidimensional representation and computation. The traditional intersection computation between two geometric objects of different types is not unified. In this study, we propose algorithms based on Conformal Geometric Algebra to determine the spatial relationships between geographic objects in a unified manner. The unified representation and intersection computation can be realized for geometric objects of different dimensions. Different basic judgment rules are provided for different simple geometries. The algorithms are designed and implemented using MapReduce to improve the efficiency of the algorithms. From the results of several experiments we provide, the correctness and effectiveness of the algorithms can be verified.
Intersection algorithm between a cylinder and a general quadric surface

Abstract:In BRep geometric modeling system, the positions of end-points of the resultant intersection curves (called key points as well) are very important for many other operations, such as boolean operations. This paper provides a method to determine the positions of the end-points of the intersection curves between a cylinder and a quadric surface. Our algorithm first turns the original intersection problem into another intersection problem between a set of line segments and a quadric surface, and obtains the parametric form of the intersection curves. Then, it computes all the key positions. Finally, it calculates the intersection intervals and their corresponding intersection curves by mid-point judging method. The algorithm has been applied in the commercial software Gems6.0, and practical experiences show both robustness and efficiency of the new algorithm.

Abstract:In this paper, a robust and efficient algorithm is proposed to calculate the intersection points of two planar algebraic curves with guaranteed tolerance. The proposed method takes advantage of the fundamental methods in the fields of CAGD, solution verification for nonlinear equations and symbolic computation. Specifically, the subdivision method is applied to quickly exclude the regions without intersection points, and then Krawczyk’s method is used to find a sharp and guaranteed bound for the intersection points. For ill-conditional cases, Sturm’s theorem is applied to determine if there are any intersection points in undetermined regions. We present examples to demonstrate the robustness and efficiency of our algorithm, and comparisons with classic methods and a state-of-the-art method are also provided. The method can be easily adapted to computing the intersection points of two parametric curves.

Abstract:Testing and accurate computing of intersection are two of key issues in the degenerated curve intersections. This paper presents a curve pencil based method for the degenerated intersection between lines, line and circle, as well as line and planar NURBS curve. It converts the degenerated intersection problem into a regular intersection problem between line and curve in the curve pencil. Both testing and accurate computing of intersection of the new regular intersection problem can be solved by general numerical methods. Examples illustrate its accuracy and robustness of the new method.
