Abstract:Curves on surfaces play an important role in computer-aided geometric design. Because of the considerably high degree of exact curves on surfaces, approximation algorithms are preferred in CAD systems. To approximate the exact curve with a reasonably low degree curve which also lies completely on the B-spline surface, an algorithm is presented in this paper. The Hausdorff distance between the approximate curve and the exact curve is controlled under the user-specified distance tolerance. The approximate curve is epsilon(T)-G(1) continuous, where epsilon(T) is the user-specified angle tolerance. Examples are given to show the performance of our algorithm. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Expressing complex curves with simple parametric curve segments is widely used in computer graphics, CAD and so on. This paper applies rational quadratic B-spline curves to give a global C 1 continuous approximation to a large class of plane parametric curves including rational parametric curves. Its application in approximate implicitization is also explored. The approximated parametric curve is first divided into intrinsic triangle convex segments which can be efficiently approximated with rational quadratic Bézier curves. With this approximation, we keep the convexity and the cusp (sharp) points of the approximated curve with simple computations. High accuracy approximation is achieved with a small number of quadratic segments. Experimental results are given to demonstrate the operation and efficiency of the algorithm.

Abstract:An algorithm is proposed to give a global approximation of an implicit real plane algebraic curve with rational quadratic B-spline curves. The algorithm consists of four steps: topology determination, curve segmentation, segment approximation and curve tracing. Due to the detailed geometric analysis, high accuracy of approximation may be achieved with a small number of quadratic segments. The final approximation keeps many important geometric features of the original curve such as the topology, convexity and sharp points. Our method is implemented and experiments show that it may achieve better approximation bound with less segments than previously known methods. We also extend the method to approximate spatial algebraic curves.

Abstract:This paper considers the problem of constructing a smooth surface to fit rows of data points. A special class of T-spline surfaces is examined, which is characterized to have a global knot vector in one parameter direction and individual knot vectors from row to row in the other parameter direction. These T-spline surfaces are suitable for lofted surface interpolation or approximation. A skinning algorithm using these T-spline surfaces is proposed, which does not require the knot compatibility of sectional curves. The algorithm consists of three main steps: generating sectional curves by interpolating data points of each row by a B-spline curve; computing the control curves of a skinning surface that interpolates the sectional curves; and approximating each control curve by a B-spline curve with fewer knots, which results in a T-spline surface. Compared with conventional B-spline surface skinning, the proposed T-spline surface skinning has two advantages. First, the sectional curves and the control curves of a T-spline surface can be constructed independently. Second, the generated T-spline skinning surface usually has much fewer control points than a lofted B-spline surface that fits the data points with the same error bound. Experimental examples have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:A quadratic Bezier spline with G1-continuity is given to approximate a planar parametric curve. In its construction, the parametric curve is first divided into several segments. A rational quadratic Bezier curve is then applied to approximate each segment and recursive subdivision for the segment may be used if the approximation error is out of the given range. With this method, we not only keep the shape but also the direction of the parametric curve with simple computation using quadratic curves. High accuracy of the approximation is also achieved with relatively small number of conics. Parametric and implicit representations are two main forms for planar curves in CAGD. Each of the two representations has its own advantages. With the parametric representation, x = x(t)=d(t);y = y(t)=d(t), where x(t);y(t);d(t) are often polynomials (i.e. the rational form), it is easy to get every point in the curve and plot it. While for the implicit form f(x;y) = 0, it's easy to determine whether a point is on the curve. The availability of both often results in simpler computation. For example, with the two forms available, we can get the intersection of two planar curves by solving a one-variable equation. For any rational parametric curves, we can always convert it into implicit form. The process is called implicitization. While the converse, called parametrization, is not always true. The implicitization techniques include some classic algebraic geometry theories, such as the resultant based method, the Groebner basis method, the characteristic set method, and others such as moving lines and surfaces. Abstract:It is desirable to approximate a smooth curve by arc spline with fewest segments within prescribed tolerance. In this paper, we present an efficient algorithm for fitting planar smooth curve by arc spline. The main idea is that we construct the optimal arc spline by optimizing the interpolating biarc curve. The scheme consists of three steps: (1) sampling the curve based on consecutive tangents deviation; (2) construct the interpolating arc spline; (3) reduce the arc number to the minimum within prescribed tolerance. The algorithm can control the approximating error efficiently and results in the fewest number of arc segments.

Abstract:Robust curve design on surface meshes with flexible controls is useful in a wide range of applications but remains challenging. Most existing methods fall into one of the two strategies: one is to discretize a curve into a polyline, which is then optimized, and the other is to directly design smooth splines on meshes. While the former approach usually needs a sufficiently dense sampling of curve points, which is computational costly, the latter approach relaxes the sampling requirement but suffers from the lack of user control. To tackle these problems, we proposed a variational method for designing feature-aware B-spline curves on surface meshes. Given the recent advances in shell space construction methods, we could relax the B-spline curve inside a simplified shell mesh and evaluate its distance to the surface using equipped bijective mapping. To effectively minimize the distance between the curve and the surface, with additional controls in the form of both internal and external constraints, we applied the interior point method and adaptively inserted knots of the spline to increase its freedom and adjust the weighting during the iterations. When the curve is close enough to the surface, it can be efficiently sampled at any resolution and robustly projected to the surface. Experiments show that our method is more robust, has higher flexibility, and generates smoother results than existing methods.

Abstract:An efficient algorithm of bounding interval triangular B-B (Bernstein-Beier) surfaces with lower degree interval triangular B-B surfaces is presented. The algorithm is based on linear programming techniques. An analytical method is also given for degree reduction of one order. The result of degree reduction approximation can be used for the purpose of data transmission among various CAD systems, as well as for the saving of computation time for some geometric operations.

Abstract:Approximating complex curves with simple parametric curves is widely used in CAGD, CG, and CNC. This paper presents an algorithm to compute a certified approximation to a given parametric space curve with cubic B-spline curves. By certified, we mean that the approximation can approximate the given curve to any given precision and preserve the geometric features of the given curve such as the topology, singular points, etc. The approximated curve is divided into segments called quasi-cubic Bézier curve segments which have properties similar to a cubic rational Bézier curve. And the approximate curve is naturally constructed as the associated cubic rational Bézier curve of the control tetrahedron of a quasi-cubic curve. A novel optimization method is proposed to select proper weights in the cubic rational Bézier curve to approximate the given curve. The error of the approximation is controlled by the size of its tetrahedron, which converges to zero by subdividing the curve segments. As an application, approximate implicit equations of the approximated curves can be computed. Experiments show that the method can approximate space curves of high degrees with high precision and very few cubic Bézier curve segments.

Abstract:A method to reconstruct symmetric B-spline curves and surfaces is presented.The symme- try property is realized by using symmetric knot vector and symmetric control points.Firstly,data points are divided into two parts based on the symmetry axis or symmetry plane extracted from data points.Then the divided data points are pararaeterized and a symmetric knot vector is selected in order to get symmetric B-spline basis functions.Constraint equations regarding the control points are deduced to keep the control points of the B-spline curve or surface to be symmetric with respect to the extracted symmetry axis or symmetry plane.Lastly,the constrained least squares fitting problem is solved with the Lagrange multiplier method.Two examples from industry are given to show that the proposed method is efficient,robust and able to meet the general engineering requirements.

Abstract:Recently, the use of B-spline curves/surfaces to fit point clouds by iteratively repositioning the B-spline's control points on the basis of geometrical rules has gained in popularity because of its simplicity, scalability, and generality. We distinguish between two types of fitting, interpolation and approximation. Interpolation generates a B-spline surface that passes through the data points, whereas approximation generates a B-spline surface that passes near the data points, minimizing the deviation of the surface from the data points. For surface interpolation, the data points are assumed to be in grids, whereas for surface approximation the data points are assumed to be randomly distributed. In this paper, an iterative geometric interpolation method, as well as an approximation method, which is based on the framework of the iterative geometric interpolation algorithm, is discussed. These two iterative methods are compared with standard fitting methods using some complex examples, and the advantages and shortcomings of our algorithms are discussed. Furthermore, we introduce two methods to accelerate the iterative geometric interpolation algorithm, as well as a method to impose geometric constraints, such as reflectional symmetry, on the iterative geometric interpolation process, and a novel fairing method for non-uniform complex data points. Complex examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Abstract:An implicit curve reconstruction method is proposed which represents the curve with an algebraic tensor-product B-spline, and minimizes the tension of the B-spline and the approximate geometric distance between the curve and the point set. The method is dynamic and self-adaptive based on trust-region algorithm in optimization theory. The specification of the initial shape is priceless, and the high-quality reconstruction curve is obtained in a robust way. Some examples are implemented.

Abstract:Bézier and B-spline curves are foundational tools for curve representation in computer graphics and computer-aided geometric design, with their intersection computation presenting a fundamental challenge in geometric modeling. This study introduces an innovative algorithm that quickly and effectively resolves intersections between Bézier and B-spline curves. The number of intersections between the two input curves within a specified region is initially determined by applying the resultant of a polynomial system and Sturm's theorem. Subsequently, the potential region of the intersection is established through the utilization of the pseudo-curvature-based subdivision scheme and the bounding box detection technique. The projected Gauss-Newton method is ultimately employed to efficiently converge to the intersection. The robustness and efficiency of the proposed algorithm are demonstrated through numerical experiments, demonstrating a speedup of 3 to 150 times over traditional methods.

Abstract:Reference (1) presents an efficient and sufficient algorithm to approximate general interpolating Spline curve which goes through the given set of design-data points by using asymptotic iterative B-spline curves. Firstly, the given set is considered as the control points of a B-spline, to create the initial approximate curve, then the iterative grade is built based on the error between the initial approximate curve and given set, it is used to generate an iterative function sequence to approximate the interpolating function of the cover. Two theorems were given in reference (1), but didn't get proved. In this text, we give a general proof based on the preceding context and several other references. In the meantime, numerical experiments further prove that this algorithm is really simple and valid.
