On the Absorption of The Three Kingdoms by Takeda Izumo's On Zhuge Kongming's Command of the Army

Abstract:Through a comparison between the Chinese novel the Three Kingdoms,the Japanese translated version of A Popular History of the Three Kingdoms and On Zhuge Kongming's Command of the Army by Takeda Izumo,the author points out that Takeda Izumo had very good knowledge about the Three Kingdoms and A Popular History of the Three Kingdoms,and the latter is a direct source for the language use in On Zhuge Kongming's Command of the Army. On one hand,it retains the depiction of Liu Bei as a hero while Cao Cao as a negative character. On the other hand,it maintains the characteristic ending of peace and prosperity in Jing Liu Li plays (traditional musical plays in Japan),which is manifested by the final compromise and the coexistence of three kingdoms. The play makes full use of stories about the three kingdoms and adds female characters who play an active part in the play and whose sacrifice helps the success of the main characters,which constitutes the tragic scenes needed in Jing Liu Li. However,the over-Chinese characterization of On Zhuge Kongming's Command of the Army might have made it difficult for the Japanese audience to accept,and therefore was not well received.
