Abstract:Reaction of a selenium alkaline solution with a nickel complex aqueous solution produces nanocrystalline pyrite NiSe2 with an average particle size of about 20nm in the temperature range of 90–100°C through a hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that the product is a single phase of pyrite nickel diselenide. TEM and ED images show that the product has a good crystallinity with a plate-like form. The synthesis can be performed conveniently and safely.

Abstract:The growth of high-quality two-dimensional (2D) layered chalcogenide crystals is highly important for practical applications in future electronics, optoelectronics, and photonics. Current route for the synthesis of 2D chalcogenide crystals by vapor deposition method mainly involves an energy intensive high-temperature growth process on solid substrates, often suffering from inhomogeneous nucleation density and grain size distribution. Here, we first demonstrate a facile vapor-phase synthesis of large-area high-quality 2D layered chalcogenide crystals on liquid metal surface with relatively low surface energy at a growth temperature as low as ∼100 °C. Uniform and large-domain-sized 2D crystals of GaSe and GaxIn1-xSe were grown on liquid metal surface even supported on a polyimide film. As-grown 2D GaSe crystals have been fabricated to flexible photodetectors, showing high photoresponse and excellent flexibility. Our strategy of energy-sustainable low-temperature growth on liquid metal surface may open a route to the synthesis of high-quality 2D crystals of Ga-, In-, Bi-, Hg-, Pb-, or Sn-based chalcogenides and halides.
In-situ Growth of ZSM-5 Crystals on the Surface of High Temperature Alloy Substrates

Abstract:In-situ growth of ZSM-5 crystals on the surface of high temperature alloy substrates (GH3128) of various shapes (discs and tubes) was investigated. Crystalline structure and morphology of zeolite crystals grown on the substrate were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. The results showed that several factors such as pretreatment temperature of the substrate, time and times of growth had influence to various degree on in-situ growth of ZSM-5 crystals on the surface of alloy substrates. A dense ZSM-5 film could be grown on the wall of a long (750 mm) alloy tube with an inner diameter of 1 mm using the repeated in-situ hydrothermal method.

Abstract:Micron-sized rod-like crystals of Cu2−xSe were successfully grown for the first time by a hydrothermal reaction from CuCl2·2H2O and Se powder at 60°C for 2h. X-ray powder diffraction patterns (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images, and transmission electron microscope (TEM) images show that the product is cubic Cu2−xSe rod-like crystal and well crystallized. Hydrazine hydrate was used as solvent in the process and played an important role in the formation of rod-like Cu2−xSe crystals. The optical properties of Cu2−xSe, such as absorption spectra, photoluminescence (PL) spectra, and Raman spectrum are also reported for the first time.

Abstract:Pb5S2I6 meso-scale tubular crystals were grown from a hydrothermal reaction among PbCl2, (NH2)2CS and I2 at 155°C. The tubular crystals were arranged from 5 to 7mm in length and 10–30μm in cross section. A possible growth mechanism for Pb5S2I6 tubular crystals is proposed.

Abstract:Dendritic Ag2Se nanostructures are synthesized in a dry environment by UV irradiating the hybrids composed of CdSe quantum dots (QDs) and silver (Ag). UV irradiation on CdSe QDs induces a photooxidation effect on the QD surface and leads to the formation of SeO2 components. Then SeO2 reacts with the Ag atoms in either Ag film or QD layer to produce the Ag2Se. The growth mechanism of Ag2Se dendrites on solid Ag films is explored and explained by a diffusion limited aggregation model in which the QD layer provides enough freedom for Ag2Se motion. Since the oxidation of the CdSe QDs is the critical step for the Ag2Se dendrites formation this dry chemical interaction between QDs and Ag film can be applied in the study of the QD surface chemical properties. With this dry synthesis method, the Ag2Se dendrites can also be facilely formed at the designed area on Ag substrates.
Selenium Nanotubes Synthesized by A Novel Solution Phase Approach

Abstract:In this communication, we demonstrate a new approach to well-controlled growth of Se nanowires and nanotubes, which comprises a hydrothermal process and a following sonication. The hydrothermal process was used to derive Se particles of trigonal phase. In the subsequent sonication, if the Se particles were large enough, they were first broken, and then aggregated along the circumferential edge of the gap thus forming Se nanotubes; conversely, the Se particles were not broken and then aligned into nanowires. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) proved that both the Se nanotubes and nanowires were single crystalline in nature and <100> oriented. Based on a series of the TEM observation, a phenomenological mechanism for the elucidation of the controllable growth of Se nanowires and nanotubes is presented.

Abstract:Water-soluble cubic structure Ag2Se (α-Ag2Se) nanocrystals smaller than 5 nm can be obtained by cation-exchange reaction at room temperature, using water-dispersed ZnSe nanocrystals as precursors, which is achieved by controlling the injection speed of AgNO3 solutions via a syringe pump in the presence of the stabilizer of trisodium citrate. Meanwhile, the thermal stability of the product Ag2Se nanocrystals is studied. The results show that the mean sizes and shapes of the precursor ZnSe and product Ag2Se nanocrystals are similar, and Se anion sublattices between them are topotaxial. In addition, no phase transition is observed for the product Ag2Se (cubic structure) nanocrystals below 180 °C. The present synthetic method based on cation-exchange reactions can also be applied to the syntheses of PbSe and CuSe nanocrystals.

Abstract:Mesoscale octaantimony decaoxide dihydroxide iodide (Sb8O10(OH)2I2) tubular crystals have been successfully synthesized for the first time through a hydrothermal route from Sb2S3, NaI and NaOH at 200°C. In the process, the Sb2S3 prismatic crystals serve as templates and play an important role in the formation of the Sb8O10(OH)2I2 tubular crystals in alkali aqueous solution. The products are characterized by X-ray powder diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The sample has tubular prismatic structure. A typical tubule is 6–8mm in length, 30–50μm in diameter, and 5μm in thickness.

Abstract:A convenient hydrothermal method has been successfully developed to prepare nanocrystalline CuSe and Ag2Se, based on the reactions of CuCl2·2H2O and AgNO3 with elemental selenium in dilute aqueous ammonia systems, respectively. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) examinations were carried out to determine the phase, grain size, morphology, and purity of the products. The aqueous ammonia system plays an important role in the formation of nanocrystalline CuSe and Ag2Se. A possible mechanism is proposed.

Abstract:The spontaneous growth of rose-like Se crystals in aqueous solutions at room temperature is reported. The formation of rose-like Se crystals is based on the oxidation of Na2Se in the presence of thioglycerol solution at pH = 11 in a dark ambient atmosphere. In alkaline solutions, the growth evolution of rose-like Se crystals with aging time was followed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and an interesting formation process from initial Se monomers to amorphous Se (a-Se) spheres, and to the final rose-like complex structures of Se crystals was observed. Seven kinds of small molecules with different structures, including 1-thioglycerol (TG), mercaptamine (MA), L-cysteine (L-cys), 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA), thioglycolic acid (TGA), glycerol (GLY), and L-serine (L-ser), were used to manipulate the growth of Se crystals. The experimental results show that the structures of the small molecules play a key role in the growth of the Se crystals. The presence of thiols in the structure of the small molecules is favorable for the formation of the aggregates of Se crystals, and other termini, such as -NH2, -OH, or -COO-, will determine whether the aggregates of Se crystals are made up of Se slices or Se prisms. These observations suggest that the ligand molecules have a crucial effect on the nucleation, monomers, and growth of nanocrystals. The selection of ligands can be extended to other important materials for further preparation of nanocrystals with desired shapes. ((c) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Abstract:Crystalline β-Ag2Se with treelike, plumelike, pebblelike, rodlike, tubular, polyhedral, and spherical morphologies have been prepared by the solvothermal reaction of silver carbonate and selenium at low temperature (190°C) and characterized by elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction pattern, and scanning electron microscopy. The morphologies and sizes of the products are affected not only by the kind of solvents but also by the reactant concentrations and reaction time and can be conveniently obtained under controlled conditions. The influences of the solvents, the reactant concentrations and reaction time on the shapes and sizes of crystalline Ag2Se are discussed.

Abstract:Crystalline antimony sulfide (Sb2S3) nanorods were hydrothermally prepared starting from SbCl3 and Na2S at 180degreesC for 12h. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) showed that the as-prepared nanorods were orthorhombic-phase Sb2S3 with lattice parameters a = 11.22Angstrom, b = 11.28Angstrom, c = 3.84Angstrom. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that the as-prepared Sb2S3 are crystalline nanorods with a size of 30-100nm in diameter and 0.3-5 mum in length. Abstract:Sb2Se3 submicron tetragonal tubes have been prepared by a microwave-assisted polyol method using antimony trichloride and sodium selenite as the Sb and Se precursors. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results showed a novel transformation of Sb2Se3 microstructures from submicron tubes to submicron spheres during the microwave heating process. The potential growth mechanism has been investigated by analyzing the samples at different growth stages. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses confirmed that samples prepared under 10 min microwave heating possessed tetragonal tubular structure with lengths in the range of 10-30 mu m, thicknesses in the range of 0.5-1 mu m and wall thicknesses in the range of 100-200 nm. High-resolution TEM (HRTEM) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) results revealed that Sb2Se3 submicron tubes were single-crystalline along the [001] direction. The optical properties of Sb2Se3 submicron tubes and submicron spheres were characterized by UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and the band gap (E-g) derived to be 1.161 and 1.173 eV, respectively.

Abstract:The growth conditions of ZnSe single crystal have been investigated by chemical vapour transport (CVT) and physical vapour transport (PVT) methods. The growth temperature of CVT method is about 850 degrees C- 900 degrees C and that of PVT method is about 1100 degrees C. The temperature gradient of growth tube is lower than 2 degrees C/cm, transport agent I-2 content is 4 mg/cm(3) in growth chamber and iodine concentrations of ZnSe crystals is about 150 ppm. phi 15mm X 30mm orange single crystal have been grown out by CVT and PVT methods. The features and growth habit of the crystals were observed. The etch pit densities of ZnSe crystals for the best crystals have been measured in the range of (2-4) X 10(4)cm(-2) full widths of half maxim (FWHM) of (004) X-ray double crystal rocking curves is 17 arcsecs, the homogeneity of the crystal was checked by X-ray diffract along different positions along a (100) slice. These data indicate that the crystals have good homogeneity and no twin crystals boundary.

Abstract:Tin chalcogenides with different morphologies were prepared from stannous oxalate and chalcogen through one step using ethylenediamine as the solvent. Orthorhombic SnS and orthorhombic SnSe crystals are plate like and rod like, whereas cubic SnTe particles are much smaller and appear to be spherical. Taking SnSe as a representative, the formation mechanism of these crystals was discussed.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline Ag2Se was synthesized at room temperature through the reaction of AgNO3, Se, and KBH4 in pyridine. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). TEM revealed that the as-prepared Ag2Se grains were homogeneous and spherical, and their average size was about 25 nm. XPS analysis showed that the purity was good. Different solvent media were tested, and pyridine was found to be the most suitable one. The possible mechanism of the formation of Ag2Se grains is proposed. This novel mild method will be extended to prepare other nanocrystalline chalcogenides at room temperature.

Abstract:Star-shaped PbS crystals have been prepared by a novel thioglycolic acid (TGA) assisted hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction reveals that the PbS crystals are well crystallized, with the cubic rock-salt structure. Transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy observations show that the PbS crystals are of star-shaped morphology. Furthermore, the mechanism and the critical factors for the TGA-assisted hydrothermal synthesis of star-shaped PbS crystals are preliminary presented.
