Abstract:Since opening to the outside world and reform, a great lot of FDI has been flown into China, especially in recent years. So the study about factors affecting FDI in China is of great importance. On the basis of the archive data in the last 20 years, the paper analyzes the main factors from the macroeconomic level and also discusses the effects of the factors on FDI entry modes. As a result, the paper finds there is significantly positive relationship between GDP and FDI as did previous empirical studies. But the result also shows there is a significantly negative relationship among FDI, wage and education level.

Abstract:As one of the basic drives of globalization, Foreig n Direct Investment (FDI) is playing an active role in the economic development of NIEs. For instance, in China 2004, fixed assets investment, industry value added , and export of FDI firms accounts for 12%, 28%, and 57% of nation's total amount. 24 million employees are hired by FDI firms which accounts for 10% of all non-agricul ture work force. The inflows of FDI not only increase the capital and create employ ment opportunities but also influence the innovation process of host countries. Through spillover effect of FDI host countries may improve their technological capa bility, organizational efficiency and management skills and even start endogenous growth. However, the condition and mechanism of spillover are so complicated that conclusions diverge on how FDI impacts innovative output in host countries. Innovative effort reflects the volume of resources that a company dedicates to carrying out innovative activities over a given per iod of time. In the area of technological innovation, the relationship between innovative effort and innovation output is validated by a number of studies (Grilich es,1990; Hitt et al.,1997; Hagedoorn,Cloodt,2003). Hence investigating the impact of FDI on innovative effort can help to analyze the mechanism of FDI on innovation output and provide profound understanding the role FDI plays in the development of host countries.

Abstract:Against the background of economic and technological globalization,and with the consideration of FDI’s notable contributions and potential threats to China economy,this paper,on the basis of adequate literature review,builds up a theoretical model regarding to the relationship between FDI spillovers and technological marginalization under the current technological regime.It focuses on the question whether the technological regime influences FDI intra-industry spillovers and technology transfer.In conclusion,the present study indicates that technological regime does exert strong influences on the effects FDI brings to the domestic industry.Accordingly,the authors give constructive strategies for domestic industries to avoid technological marginalization by catching opportunities to upgrade up to the global industry frontier.

Abstract:By examining the characteristics of China's current account structure and the channels that FDI may influence it,this paper presents a rigorous analysis of the impact of FDI on the changes of China's current account balance in the balance of payments.The results of variance decomposition analysis reveal that FDI is a significant contributing factor to the current account balance,which,from 1982 to 2006,constituted a fluctuation of approximately fourteen percent.In addition,FDI has conflicting influences on the current account balance.On one hand,FDI contributes to China's trade surplus by driving growth in manufacturing and related sectors,constituting an increase in current account balance and hence the balance of payments.On the other hand,remitted interests from FDI consequently result in continued deficits to investment income,which will partially offset the positive effects of trade balance at the same time.Hence,both aspects must be taken into consideration when making adjustments to the China's international balance of payments featuring the Twin Surpluses(surpluses in both current account and capital account).Only through a holistic assessment of the interaction between two accounts and the interaction between foreign investment policy and foreign trade policy can the purpose of sustainable growth of economy be achieved.

Abstract:Abstract Numerous studies have extensively investigated the influence of foreign direct investment (FDI) on China's economic development from diverse angles, encompassing technological innovation, industrial structure, environmental pollution, foreign trade, and more. However, there is a scarcity of studies that comprehensively examine the hollistic impact of FDI on China's present model of "high-quality" economic development. Therefore, this study proposes a multi-path mechanism using the partial least-squares structural equation modeling to investigate the direct and indirect effects of them from 2012 to 2021. The findings show that, in general, FDI has played a crucial role in promoting high-quality economic development of China nationally and regionally, such as innovative development, green development, shared development, foreign trade, and economic security. Meanwhile, FDI has had a negative impact on harmonized development. Moreover, FDI has had a negative impact on the foreign trade in the middle region; while, FDI has not promoted high-quality economic development directly in the western region. Therefore, a scientific understanding of the relative importance of different paths can help decision-makers make more valid decisions, such as scientifically guiding FDI into rural areas and the tertiary industry; encouraging FDI firms to export in the middle region, increasing the entry threshold for FDI in the west region.

Abstract:Since its reform and opening-up,China's economy has largely depended on FDI and made great achievements.Obviously,FDI has effected on the whole process of China's economic development.Researches have often been done on the factors that affect the increase of export,one of the important researches being on the relationship between foreign direct investment and trade export of the host country.This article offers a study of several important factors that influence China's export through an analysis of the FDI effect on export.Using statistics of the last 20 years,it constructs an analytical model of FDI and export,investigating into the FDI effects on China's export and the consequences.Moreover,some policy suggestions are raised.With the rapid development of FDI in China,foreign investment corporation's effect on the Chinese export is being strengthened.It can be studied in the following two ways:1.Direct Effect: Foreign corporations have grown to be a major force in China's export.Foreign investment corporations,especially export processing firms,have achieved a rapid increase in export volumes and a steady increase in proportion to the total national export.2.Indirect Effect:First,foreign investment corporations can develop oversees markets through adding new distribution channels.Secondly,China's trade relationship with other countries is becoming more intimate,which will improve the international trade environment.Thirdly,through FDI and competing with foreign investment corporations,domestic trade companies can accelerate their own reform and acquire more sense of crisis.To study the connection between FDI and export,this article sets up a regression model.We divide the article into two parts,one on the impact of FDI on export and the other on the mutual impact between FDI and export through the Granger test of causality.The result shows that the effect of FDI in China is a complementary effect rather than a substitution effect.At the mean time,FDI and the amount of export have a Granger cause and effect relationship,i.e.two factors affecting each other.The paper also raises some policy suggestions.1).The government should pay attention to international economy and trade disputations.2).Enterprises should improve their capability of innovation.(3).There should be an efficient adjustment of the preferential policy and abstract foreign investment.
Foreign Direct Investment and Regional Economic Development in China:An Empirical Analysis

Abstract:Since the 1990's, foreign direct investment(FDI)has been playing a more and more important role in the economic development of China. Using time series and panel data in the period of 1991-2003, this paper estimates the short and long term effect of FDI on the regional economy. It shows that FDI growth has a significant impact on the regional economic growth in China. FDI promoted regional economic growths. However, the unbalanced FDI among the regions worsens the unbalanced economic development among those regions. Finally this paper suggests new strategies and policies making to increase the amount of FDI in central and western regions, to reduce this regional disparity, and to promote the balanced economic growth in different regions in China.
Does FDI Facilitate or Dampen Indigenous R&D?

Abstract:Effective indigenous R&D is now widely recognized as a necessary for a developing economy like China to sustain its rapid growth and eventually catch up with the developed nations. Meanwhile, many have concerns that a rapid inflow of FDI, which in the short run is an engine of economic growth, diminishes the incentives and capacity of indigenous R&D and therefore impedes long term economic development. The paper is an empirical investigation of this hypothesis by compiling a panel data set of 37 industries covering the years of 1998—2003. Our empirical tests reject the above hypothesis. To the contrary, we found that those industries attracting more FDI over the sample years had more input into and achievements of R&D. Our did alternative tests show that it is unlikely the results are driven by common factors driving FDI and indigenous R&D.

Abstract:With the acceleration of China's reform and opening-up process, the macro-economy is also developing rapidly, but in recent years, changes in the internal and external situation have all been seen as factors affecting the macro-economy, how to see the situation, how to formulate a reasonable policy to cope with the problem, has become the main task of the macro-economy. The balance of payments is an essential link in determining macroeconomic development. It is related to the balance and stability of domestic and foreign wealth, of which foreign investment is an essential part of China's opening up to the outside world, and most foreign investment is direct investment. The study of the impact of foreign direct investment on the balance of payments is of practical significance. Its main strategies of a trade conflict between China and the United States and the expansion of domestic demand in recent years can put forward valuable opinions, as well as guiding significance for stabilizing the exchange rate and guaranteeing the healthy development of the macroeconomy. This paper firstly summarizes and combs the research and theories on the impact of foreign direct investment on the balance of payments; secondly, it analyzes and summarizes the data on the status of FDI in China and China's balance of payments; then it conducts the theoretical, empirical analysis based on the theory; and finally, it draws the conclusions and realistic recommendations based on the above contents.

Abstract:Although there is still no general foreign direct investment (FDI) location theory, a large number of related studies do help deepen our understanding of this issue. Location theory and FDI theory are the two fundamental theoretical bases of FDI location research. China as a successful transition country, the issue about its FDI location choice had become a hot topic in many fields. This paper reviewed the features, methods, and con- tents of existing studies on FDI location in China. Qualitative description was the most important character of early studies. Since the mid-1990s, the research focuses were shifted to identify the factors which affected the FDI location decision using the econometric model. Existing studies mainly focused on provincial scale and identified location factors included costs, markets, agglomeration, institution, etc. FDI location decision in host country is the interacted result of region-industry-enterprise factors, therefore there are other factors——includ- ing the country of origin, industry and enterprise characteristics, and the evolution factors——work besides the host country’s location factors. Finally, the paper put forward some questions deserving further research, including discussing the general location model in merging economies, strengthening region-industry-enterprise systematic research, and paying attention to the location of different functions of FDI in China.

Abstract:In the last two decades, China has become one of the areas that have the greatest potential in industrial production, thus it has ranked second only to USA in the flow of international capital. By the end of 1998, the real value of FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) in China has utilized has added up to $268.1 billion. The big flow of FDI has not only promoted the development of social economy, but also worsened the existing regional difference by choosing spatial location. Under this circumstance, China’s economy faces new restrictions and opportunities while adjusting its regional structure and industrial structure. So it is more and more important for us how to seize the opportunity, to seek the regularity of FDI in choosing location from the aspect of space, to set up relevant strategy to direct FDI at inland regions (areas deficient of capital), and to make appropriate policies, esp. the industrial and regional policies so as for FDI to exert positive influence and avoid negative influence on China and its regional economy and society. Based on the latest domestic and overseas materials and data of the FDI in China, combining with the investigation of the enterprises, this paper has systematically revealed the progress of development of the FDI in China and the developing conditions of the main enterprises directly invested by foreign capital since the reform and opening-up in China. The characters of FDI such as spatial concentration, transference as time goes on, change of the technical content and up-gradation of industrial structure and their forming mechanism have been studied. Then the basic conclusions have been made as follows. Firstly, FDI has been highly concentrated in space. But as time goes by, it has been transferring from coastal regions to inland ones, from big cities to their surrounding districts, and the degree of concentration is decreasing. Secondly, the technical content of the invested projects has gradually increased and the up-gradation of the industrial structure is obvious. Thirdly, the regional choice of the FDI in China is mainly affected by labor and other productive factors. The relative change of the cost of productive factors in different regions since the reform and opening-up is one of the main factors that have caused the spatial transference of the FDI in China. Fourthly, as people’s income increases and the accumulation of the capacity of the technique and labor advances, FDI whose aim is to get more market has increased and tended to transfer from coastal regions to inland ones. Fifthly, the changes of the industrial structure of the main areas and countries who have directly invested in China and the changes of inter-regional industries and regional policies in China are also the important factors that affect the industries directly invested by foreign capital and their spatial transference.

Abstract:The total amount of Foreign Direct Investment(FDI)in China increases year by year, while the entry mode of multinational enterprises(MNEs)has been changed. More and more MNEs preferred to establish sole-source investment enterprises. After researching on FDI entry mode theories and PEST analytical frame, this study designs a multi-regression model based on the macro-economic data of China in these 20 years. Conclusions of the model are: GDP, foreign trade dependence degree and human development index are positively related with the sole-source investment trend of MNEs' FDI in China, and China’s technology level is negative related with it.

Abstract:Starting from the contradiction between China's sustained growth in foreign direct investment (FDI) net inflow and deterioration of the terms of trade, this paper analyzes the characteristics of FDI sectoral structure since the 1990. Moreover, considering the international market competitive environment, this paper gives a concrete analysis of the influence mechanism and concludes that the flowing of FDI into labor-intensive export sectors caused the deterioration of China terms of trade. To improve its terms of trade, China needs to direct FDI inflow into capital- and technology-intensive sectors and service sectors.

Abstract:On the basis of an augmented Euler equation, we use firmsurvey data provided by the World Bank to investigate the impact of FDI (foreign direct investment) on the financing constraints of firms in China. First we calculate the forward and backward linkages of FDI. Then through empirical estimation, we find that only private firms have financing constraints and that the incoming FDI alleviates this situation. Private firms with more foreign capital shares or having stronger vertical linkage with FDI can get financial resources easily. Furthermore, industries hosting a large amount of FDI are favorite clients of the financial institutions because they are usually much more competitive in the world. As a result, the private firms in these industries also have easier access to financial resources. In the financial market, FDI is a helping hand that reduces the information asymmetry between firms and financial institutions. Financial resources go where FDI goes, which to some extent improves the allocation efficiency.

Abstract:<p>Outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) has increasingly become an important method for China to integrate into the world economy. This paper comprehensively reviews and analyzes policy development and the changing pattern of China's OFDI over the past 40 years. We divide the development into "restricted" (1978–1999), "relaxed" (2000–2016) and "regulated" (2017 onwards) stages. This paper also reviews literature on the impact of Chinese OFDI on China and host countries. Despite its generally positive effects, large‐scale and unbalanced OFDI activities have alarmed Chinese policymakers. Both developing and developed host countries have expressed their concern over national security and the misbehavior of some Chinese overseas enterprises. Therefore, greater supervision and adjustment from quantity to quality growth is necessary for the future development of China's OFDI.</p>
