Abstract:Since opening to the outside world and reform, a great lot of FDI has been flown into China, especially in recent years. So the study about factors affecting FDI in China is of great importance. On the basis of the archive data in the last 20 years, the paper analyzes the main factors from the macroeconomic level and also discusses the effects of the factors on FDI entry modes. As a result, the paper finds there is significantly positive relationship between GDP and FDI as did previous empirical studies. But the result also shows there is a significantly negative relationship among FDI, wage and education level.

This article reviewed the existing research from three aspects which is the main determinants of foreign investment in the food industry, impact of FDI on food trade and impact of FDI on industry security. Besides, this paper also put forward some research directions.

Abstract:Since the 1990's, foreign direct investment(FDI)has been playing a more and more important role in the economic development of China. Using time series and panel data in the period of 1991-2003, this paper estimates the short and long term effect of FDI on the regional economy. It shows that FDI growth has a significant impact on the regional economic growth in China. FDI promoted regional economic growths. However, the unbalanced FDI among the regions worsens the unbalanced economic development among those regions. Finally this paper suggests new strategies and policies making to increase the amount of FDI in central and western regions, to reduce this regional disparity, and to promote the balanced economic growth in different regions in China.

Abstract:This paper studies the impact of foreign direct investment (FDI) on regional innovation, which is measured by patent applications and patent citations, based on city-level data in China from 1995 to 2015. Using an instrumental variable approach, this paper demonstrates that FDI not only promotes the quantity of regional innovation, but also improves the quality of regional innovation in China. The findings are robust to various specifications of the empirical model and measurements. In addition, we highlight the channel of improving local absorptive capacity and market competition through which FDI exerts positive influence on regional innovation, and show that FDI acts as a substitute for local financial development to raise regional innovation.

Abstract:This paper studies how foreign direct investment (FDI) affects innovation in the host country, using matched firm-level patent data of Chinese firms. The data contain multidimensional in-formation about patent counts and citations, which, together with an identification strategy based on Lu et al. (2017), allows us to measure innovation comprehensively and to uncover the causal relationship. Our empirical analysis shows that FDI has positive intra-industry effects on the quantity and quality of innovation, as well as radical innovation, by Chinese firms. We show that these positive effects are driven by increases in competition, rather than by knowledge spillovers from FDI which is measured by patent citations between domestic firms and foreign invested enterprises (FIEs). We further investigate the inter-industry effects of FDI and find that FDI has positive vertical effects on innovation in upstream sectors through backward knowledge spillovers.

Abstract:By examining the characteristics of China's current account structure and the channels that FDI may influence it,this paper presents a rigorous analysis of the impact of FDI on the changes of China's current account balance in the balance of payments.The results of variance decomposition analysis reveal that FDI is a significant contributing factor to the current account balance,which,from 1982 to 2006,constituted a fluctuation of approximately fourteen percent.In addition,FDI has conflicting influences on the current account balance.On one hand,FDI contributes to China's trade surplus by driving growth in manufacturing and related sectors,constituting an increase in current account balance and hence the balance of payments.On the other hand,remitted interests from FDI consequently result in continued deficits to investment income,which will partially offset the positive effects of trade balance at the same time.Hence,both aspects must be taken into consideration when making adjustments to the China's international balance of payments featuring the Twin Surpluses(surpluses in both current account and capital account).Only through a holistic assessment of the interaction between two accounts and the interaction between foreign investment policy and foreign trade policy can the purpose of sustainable growth of economy be achieved.

Abstract:Based on panel data at the provincial level in China, this paper found that direct effects foreign direct investment (FDI) had on economic growth were of insignificance. However, through improving technical efficiency and "crowding" in domestic investment, FDI produced positive effects on China's economy. The state sector still played a major part in the total fixed investment, therefore, direct effects on growth were significant. Although private sector was increasingly important for the whole economy, it had no direct influences on economic growth. Meanwhile, neither the state sector nor private sector made contribution to the improvement on technical efficiency.
The effects of foreign direct investment on human capital accumulation—Evidence from China

Abstract:This paper examines the effect of foreign direct investment (FDI) on human capital accumulation in China. The identification strategy exploits variations in FDI inflows across manufacturing sub‐sectors caused by China's FDI liberalisation and initial sectoral composition patterns across cities. Using a panel of city‐level data from 1990 to 2005, the paper shows that FDI liberalisation accelerated human capital accumulation. Cities with higher exposure to FDI liberalisation experienced higher growth in high school and college enrollment. FDI incentivizes individuals' investment in their human capital by paying a higher wage premium for skilled workers, pushing up the skill premium in the local labor market, and raising household income. Compared to export‐oriented FDI and FDI in less‐skilled industries, market‐seeking FDI and skill‐intensive FDI have a much larger effect on college enrollment.

Abstract:The research of imports of foreign direct investment(FDI)on the host country's economic growth is an issue in the study of international investment and economic growth.Along with the increase of FDI in our country,the evidence from China plays an important role to deepen the study in the field.In the paper,based on the data from different provinces and different areas(Eastern,Middle and Western Areas) from 1992 to 2004 in China,we use a modified De Mello's model to improve the robust city of the results.Like other similar studies,our research proves that FDI have a positive effect on China's economic growth.But at the same time,our research distinguished from others in that it shows FDI's different impact on Eastern,Middle and Western Areas.Compared with Middle Area,FDI's impact on Western Area is statistically lower,which means Western Area should reform its investment environment to improve the FDI's efficiency.Regression results also show that compared with Middle Area,FDI impact on Eastern Area isn't significantly higher.While such result is a little bit perplexing,it may reveal FDI's crowd out effect in the Eastern Area.

Abstract:Country Characteristics and Foreign Direct Investment in China: A Panel Data Analysis. — In this paper an error-components model is developed to analyze the economic, political and cultural determinants of both pledged and realized FDI in China which has recently become the second largest host country for FDI. The panel data cover the period 1983–1994 (1984–1994) and 22 (17) home countries/regions in the case of pledged (realized) FDI. The results indicate that bilateral trade, cultural differences, and relative real changes in market size, wage rates, and exchange rates are important determinants of pledged FDI, and that bilateral trade, relative changes in wage rates and exchange rates affect realized FDI.

Abstract:Since its reform and opening-up,China's economy has largely depended on FDI and made great achievements.Obviously,FDI has effected on the whole process of China's economic development.Researches have often been done on the factors that affect the increase of export,one of the important researches being on the relationship between foreign direct investment and trade export of the host country.This article offers a study of several important factors that influence China's export through an analysis of the FDI effect on export.Using statistics of the last 20 years,it constructs an analytical model of FDI and export,investigating into the FDI effects on China's export and the consequences.Moreover,some policy suggestions are raised.With the rapid development of FDI in China,foreign investment corporation's effect on the Chinese export is being strengthened.It can be studied in the following two ways:1.Direct Effect: Foreign corporations have grown to be a major force in China's export.Foreign investment corporations,especially export processing firms,have achieved a rapid increase in export volumes and a steady increase in proportion to the total national export.2.Indirect Effect:First,foreign investment corporations can develop oversees markets through adding new distribution channels.Secondly,China's trade relationship with other countries is becoming more intimate,which will improve the international trade environment.Thirdly,through FDI and competing with foreign investment corporations,domestic trade companies can accelerate their own reform and acquire more sense of crisis.To study the connection between FDI and export,this article sets up a regression model.We divide the article into two parts,one on the impact of FDI on export and the other on the mutual impact between FDI and export through the Granger test of causality.The result shows that the effect of FDI in China is a complementary effect rather than a substitution effect.At the mean time,FDI and the amount of export have a Granger cause and effect relationship,i.e.two factors affecting each other.The paper also raises some policy suggestions.1).The government should pay attention to international economy and trade disputations.2).Enterprises should improve their capability of innovation.(3).There should be an efficient adjustment of the preferential policy and abstract foreign investment.

This paper uses a panel dataset of Chinese cities to examine the impact of inward FDI on the urban real wage. The results suggest that the existence of FDI has a significant and positive effect on urban real wages and that this impact remains significant after controlling for other city characteristics. Cross-city variation of FDI intensity is one important factor contributing to intercity wage inequality.

Abstract:On the basis of an augmented Euler equation, we use firmsurvey data provided by the World Bank to investigate the impact of FDI (foreign direct investment) on the financing constraints of firms in China. First we calculate the forward and backward linkages of FDI. Then through empirical estimation, we find that only private firms have financing constraints and that the incoming FDI alleviates this situation. Private firms with more foreign capital shares or having stronger vertical linkage with FDI can get financial resources easily. Furthermore, industries hosting a large amount of FDI are favorite clients of the financial institutions because they are usually much more competitive in the world. As a result, the private firms in these industries also have easier access to financial resources. In the financial market, FDI is a helping hand that reduces the information asymmetry between firms and financial institutions. Financial resources go where FDI goes, which to some extent improves the allocation efficiency.

Abstract:This paper examines a causal relationship between foreign direct investment (FDI) and firms' pollution intensity by exploiting the policy of China's FDI access relaxation in 2002. The result shows that FDI leads to a significant reduction in firms' pollution intensity. The mechanism tests find that FDI reduces pollution intensity by increasing firms' productivity, pollution management abilities, and the output of lightly polluting firms. The effect primarily acts on firms in lightly polluting industries and firms in the eastern region. The findings support the pollution halo hypothesis and provide implications for developing countries like China by evaluating the effectiveness of policies to attract FDI.

Abstract:The study is to investigate how foreign direct investment (FDI) affects China's off-farm employment and per capita income of rural labourers and compare the effects in different regions. Based on panel data from 1997 to 2018 in 27 provinces and analysing the results of the simultaneous equations and dynamic generalized moment models with economic distances as extra instrumental variables, the study finds that FDI on average has played a significantly positive role in Chinese off-farm employment and per capita income of rural labourers. However, FDI has a much bigger impact on off-farm employment and per capita income of rural labourers in the coastal region than that in the inland region. In addition, we observe a positive off-farm employment and income effect of FDI with rural labour's education level playing a significantly positive moderating role. The impact mechanism test also shows that FDI's impact on off-farm employment and income is realized by stimulating the development of non-agricultural industries and directly creating jobs. These adjustments make a significant contribution to poverty reduction in rural China. China should further adjust the structure of FDI and optimize the regional distribution of foreign investment for promoting the overall transformation in rural China.

Abstract:This paper investigates the impact of foreign direct investment (FDI) on the export performance of China at the provincial level. First, it presents a theoretical discussion of the impact of FDI on foreign trade, and then an empirical study of the impact of FDI on the export performance of regions in Chin. It has been found that the impact of FDI on exports differs across three macro‐regions in China. The effect is stronger in the coastal region than in the inland regions. Although FDI shows a positive and significant impact on exports from the central region, its impact on the western region is found to be insignificant.

Abstract:The received wisdom is that foreign investment in modern China was an important factor that blocked Chinese economic development in the early twenty century. This paper analyzes the size and profit margin of foreign investment in modern China. It also analyzes the development of domestic enterprises in the years when foreign investment increased steadily. We find that the positive effects of foreign direct investment to domestic enterprises are highly significant. Foreign investment was not a factor that blocked China s economic development but a factor contributing to the growth of domestic enterprises. However, the effect of foreign indirect investment needs more analysis.

Abstract:Based upon a production function with FDI representing updated technology from more developed, market‐based economies, this study tests the hypothesis that FDI contributes to the economic growth of less developed, transition economies via technology updating, using data for 30 Chinese provinces from 1985 to 2000. It is found that provinces with a higher FDI ratio experienced faster technology updating and more rapid economic growth. The study suggests that less developed, transition economies should encourage FDI from more developed, market‐based economies so as to accelerate technology updating and economic growth.
