Abstract:Investigating the membrane fouling behavior of drinking water nanofiltration (NF) systems is of practical significance for NF treatment applications. Based on a full-scale 3-stage NF system with a raw water flow rate of 11 m3/h, a comprehensive investigation involving NF system performance monitoring, membrane autopsy, and mathematical analysis of membrane fouling energy loss was performed. The membrane fouling behavior resulting from positional differences in the multistage NF system, and fouling mechanisms within a membrane element were revealed. Over 175 days of filtration, the energy consumption ratio of Stage 1 was the highest (51.49 % on average), followed by that in Stage 3 (31.84–35.25 %), and accelerated with time, indicating that severe membrane fouling occurred in Stages 1 and 3. Irreversible fouling resistance (R irr ) accounted for most of the fouling resistance, and the total fouling resistance (R t ) increased slightly from Stages 1 to 2 but increased dramatically in Stage 3. The composite membrane fouling layer contained organic and inorganic foulants, mainly organic foulants. Besides, the extent of membrane fouling was positively correlated with the proportion of inorganic foulants. Within membrane elements, the membrane fouling was more severe at the inlet and outlet sides than in the mid-section, suggesting that the structure of membrane elements should be modified to increase the cross-sectional area of the inlet and outlet flow channels. Analysis of the fouling behavior of multistage NF systems based on fouling characteristics and performance could provide a systematic basis for the design, operation, and targeted cleaning of NF membrane systems.
