Abstract:We introduce an F-Willmore functional of submanifold in space forms, which generalizes the well-known Willmore functional. Its critical point is called the F-Willmore submanifold, for which the variational equation and Simons’ type integral inequality are obtained.

Abstract:In this paper, we reformulate the Euler-Lagrange equations of Willmore surfaces in S-n as the flatness of a family of certain loop algebra-valued 1-forms. Therefore we can give the Weierstrass type representation of conformal Willmore surfaces. We also discuss the relations between conformal Willmore surfaces in S-n and minimal surfaces in constant curvature spaces S-n, R-n, H-n, and prove that some special Willmore surfaces can be derived from minimal surfaces in S-n, R-n, H-n.

Abstract:Let x : M --> Sn+p be an n-dimensional submanifold in an (n + p)-dimensional unit sphere Sn+p, x : M --> Sn+p is called a Willmore submanifold if it is an extremal submanifold to the following Willmore functional:integral(M)(S-nH(2))n/2 dv,where S =[GRAPHICS]is the square of the length of the second fundamental form, H is the mean curvature of M. In [13], author proved an integral inequality of Simons' type for n-dimensional compact Willmore hypersurfaces in Sn+1 and gave a characterization of Willmore tori. In this paper, we generalize this result to n-dimensional compact Willmore submanifolds in Sn+p. In fact, we obtain an integral inequality of Simons' type for compact Willmore submanifolds in Sn+p and give a characterization of Willmore tori and Veronese surface by use of our integral inequality.

Abstract:By using the volume form induced from the projective sphere bundle of the Fiusler manifold,the Finsler geometry of submanifolds is studied.The first variation formula of the volume functional for Fiusler submanifolds is derived.The second fundamental form and the mean curvature form for Finsler submanifolds are defined,which coincide with the usual notions for the Riemannian case.By deriving the divergence formula on the fiber of the projective sphere bundle,a simple equivalence expression of the mean curvature form is given.Some interesting results for Finsler submanifolds in the Minkowski space are established.

Abstract:Let $ x{:}\ M\rightarrow S^{n+p} $ be an n-dimensional submanifold in an (n + p)-dimensional unit sphere S n + p , M is called a Willmore submanifold (see [11], [16]) if it is a critical submanifold to the Willmore functional $\int_M(S-nH^2)^{\frac{n}{2}}d\nu$, where $ S=\sum_{\alpha,i,\,j}(h^\alpha_{ij})^2 $ is the square of the length of the second fundamental form, H is the mean curvature of M. In [11], the second author proved an integral inequality of Simons’ type for n-dimensional compact Willmore submanifolds in S n + p . In this paper, we discover that a similar integral inequality of Simons’ type still holds for the critical submanifolds of the functional $\int_M(S-nH^2)d\nu$. Moreover, it has the advantage that the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equation is simpler than the Willmore equation.

Abstract:Let ${\phi : M \to R^{n+p}(c)}$ be an n-dimensional submanifold in an (n + p)-dimensional space form R n+p(c) with the induced metric g. Willmore functional of ${\phi}$ is ${W(\phi) = \int_{M}(S - nH^{2})^{n/2}dv}$ , where ${S = \sum_{\alpha,i, j}(h^{\alpha}_{ij} )^2}$ is the square of the length of the second fundamental form, H is the mean curvature of M. The Weyl functional of (M, g) is ${\nu(g) = \int_{M}|W_{g}|^{n/2}dv}$ , where ${|W_{g}|^{2} = \sum_{i, j,k,l} W^{2}_{ijkl}}$ and W ijkl are the components of the Weyl curvature tensor W g of (M, g). In this paper, we discover an inequality relation between Willmore functional ${W(\phi)}$ and Weyl funtional ν(g).
Willmore surfaces in 4-dimensional conformal manifolds

Abstract:This paper is devoted to studying the conformal Willmore functional for surfaces in $4$-dimensional conformal manifolds. We calculate the first and second variation. The Euler-Lagrange equation of this functional is stated in a conformal invariant form. Based on the second variation formula we obtained, we prove that the Clifford torus in $\mathbb{C}P^2$ is strongly Willmore-stable. This provides strong support to the conjecture of Montiel and Urbano, which states that the Clifford torus in $\mathbb{C}P^2$ minimizes the Willmore functional among all tori. In $4$-dimensional locally symmetric spaces, by constructing several holomorphic differentials, we prove that among all minimal $2$-spheres only those super-minimal ones can be Willmore.

Abstract:We first prove that a properly immersed static n-dimensional submanifold (Delta H = 0) with restricted growth of the curvature at infinity in Fn+p(c)(c >= 0) is totally umbilical if the Will more functional is pinched by a positive constant depending only on n. Secondly, we obtain a global rigidity theorem for Willmore surfaces in the sphere. Thirdly, we give a lower bound on the lifespan of the surface diffusion flow in Fn+p(c). Finally, we get the longtime existence and convergence of the surface diffusion flow in Fn+p(c) (c >= 0) under the small initial Willmore energy condition.
The Second Variational Formula for Willmore Submanifolds in S N

Abstract:In [17] the third author presented Moebius geometry for sub-manifolds in Sn and calculated the first variational formula of the Willmore functional by using Moebius invariants. In this paper we present the second variational formula for Willmore submanifolds. As an application of these variational formulas we give the standard examples of Willmore hypersurfaces $ \lbrace W_{k}^{m}:= S^{k}(\sqrt {(m-k)/m}) \times S^{m-k}(\sqrt {k/m}), 1 \leq k \leq m-1 \rbrace $ in Sm+1 (which can be obtained by exchanging radii in the Clifford tori $ S^{k}(\sqrt {k/m}) \times S^{m-k}(\sqrt {(m-k)/m)})$ and show that they are stable Willmore hypersurfaces. In case of surfaces in S3, the stability of the Clifford torus $ S^{1}{({1\over \sqrt {2}})}\times S^{1}{({1\over \sqrt {2}})} $ was proved by J. L. Weiner in [18]. We give also some examples of m-dimensional Willmore submanifolds in an n-dimensional unit sphere Sn.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a class of functionals subject to a duality restriction. The functional is of the form J(Ω,Ω*)=∫Ωf+∫Ω*g $\mathcal{J}\left({\Omega},{{\Omega}}^{{\ast}}\right)={\int }_{{\Omega}}f+{\int }_{{{\Omega}}^{{\ast}}}g$ , where f, g are given nonnegative functions in a manifold. The duality is a relation α(x, y) ≤ 0 ∀ x ∈ Ω, y ∈ Ω*, for a suitable function α. This model covers several geometric and physical applications. In this paper we review two topological methods introduced in the study of the functional, and discuss possible extensions of the methods to related problems.

In a previous paper, we introduce the notion of formal manifolds and develop the foundational framework of formal manifolds. In this paper, we study various function spaces on formal manifolds, including generalizations of vector-valued generalized functions and vector-valued distributions on smooth manifolds to the setting of formal manifolds.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop the theory of Perelman's $W$-functional on manifolds with isolated conical singularities. In particular, we show that the infimum of $W$-functional over a certain weighted Sobolev space on manifolds with isolated conical singularities is finite, and the minimizer exists, if the scalar curvature satisfies certain condition near the singularities. We also obtain an asymptotic order for the minimizer near the singularities.

Abstract:f-biharmonic maps are generalizations of harmonic maps and biharmonic maps. In this paper, we give some descriptions of f-biharmonic curves in a space form. We also obtain a complete classification of proper f-biharmonic isometric immersions of a developable surface in R3 by proving that a proper f-biharmonic developable surface exists only in the case where the surface is a cylinder. Based on this, we show that a proper biharmonic conformal immersion of a developable surface into R3 exists only in the case when the surface is a cylinder. Riemannian submersions can be viewed as a dual notion of isometric immersions (i.e., submanifolds). We also study f-biharmonicity of Riemannian submersions from 3-manifolds by using the integrability data. Examples are given of proper f-biharmonic Riemannian submersions and f-biharmonic surfaces and curves.

Abstract:Motivated by some issues which enter into harmonic morphisms as unit normal projections of isometric immersions, this paper studies submanifolds with conformal second fundamental form, and demonstrates that high dimensional submanifolds with conformal second fundamental form, are in general not composed of minimal points and totally umbilical points. This contrasts sharply with the situation in surfaces. The authors also give a complete classification of all odd-dimensional these submanifolds with parallel mean curvature in constant curvature spaces.
Willmore-type variational problem for foliated hypersurfaces

Abstract:We study new Willmore-type variational problem for a hypersurface $M$ in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ equipped with an $s$-dimensional foliation ${\cal F}$. Its general version is the Reilly-type functional $WF_{n,s}=\int_M F(\sigma^{\cal F}_1,\ldots,\sigma^{\cal F}_s)\,{\rm d}V$, where $\sigma^{\cal F}_i$ are elementary symmetric functions of the eigenvalues of the second fundamental form restricted on the leaves of $\cal F$. The first and second variations of such functionals are calculated, conformal invariance of some of $WF_{n,s}$ is also shown. The Euler-Lagrange equation for a critical hypersurface with a transversally harmonic (e.g., Riemannian) foliation $\cal F$ is found and examples with $s\le2$ and $s=n$ are considered. Critical hypersurfaces of revolution are found, and it is shown that they are a local minimum for special variations.

Abstract:Some classification results for closed surfaces in Berger spheres are presented. On the one hand, a Willmore functional for isometrically immersed surfaces into an homogeneous space $\mathbb{E}^{3}(\kappa,\tau)$ with isometry group of dimension $4$ is defined and its first variational formula is computed. Then, we characterize Clifford and Hopf tori as the only Willmore surfaces satifying a sharp Simons-type integral inequality. On the other hand, we also obtain some integral inequalities for closed surfaces with constant extrinsic curvature in $\mathbb{E}^3(\kappa,\tau)$, becoming equalities if and only if the surface is a Hopf torus in a Berger sphere.

Abstract:Let f:ℂ→ℝ^3 be a complete Willmore immersion with ∫ _Σ|A_f|^2<+∞ . We will show that if f is the limit of an embedded surface sequence, then f is a plane. As an application, we prove that if Σ _k is a sequence of closed Willmore surfaces embedded in ℝ^3 with W(Σ _k)<C , and if the conformal class of Σ _k converges in the moduli space, then we can find a Möbius transformation σ _k , such that a subsequence of σ _k(Σ _k) converges smoothly.
