Abstract:High sensitivity at room temperature. A surface photovoltage (SPV) NO2 gas sensor was fabricated, with a self-ordered tin-modified MCM-41 film, based on a metal–insulator–semiconductor (MIS) structure (see picture). Abstract:Self-ordered and structure-controlled transparent films of tin-modified mesoporous silica (Sn/Si ratio of 0.5-3%) were first prepared using a molecule surfactant template method employing spin coating. A surface photovoltage (SPV) NO(2) gas sensor was then fabricated using these self-ordered tin-modified mesoporous silica thin films based on a metal-insulator-semiconductor structure. Highly sensitive tin-modified mesoporous silica was obtained that could detect NO(2) gas concentrations of as low as 300 ppb at room temperature. The detection mechanism for NO(2) is believed to involve both the surface area, which contributes to the change in dielectric constant, and the amount of tin incorporated, which contributes to the change in charge. It was found that, in this SPV sensor, the optimal Sn/Si ratio of 0.5% delivered record-high sensing performance.

Abstract:Flowerlike nanometer scaled tin oxide (nano-SnO2) was synthesized by a novel and green method without annealing. Accordingly, a dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) gas sensor based on a quartz crystal microbalance was fabricated and studied. According to the experimental results, the sensor with the flowerlike nano-SnO2 sensing film working at room temperature exhibited good sensitivity and selectivity as well as a rapid response to DMMP. An environmentally friendly idea to synthesize material in a green way and fabricate sensors to detect harmful or toxic gases was realized.

Abstract:The first NO and NO2 gas sensors based on surface photo-voltage (SPV) semiconductor device system are fabricated by the metal/SiO2 (self-ordered hexagonal mesoporous)/Si3N4/SiO2/Si structure. Size controlled silicate hexagonal mesoporous film is successfully synthesized by spin coating on a Si3N4/SiO2/Si silicon wafer using poly (ethylene oxide)-poly (propylene oxide)-poly (ethylene oxide) (Pluronic P123 =EO20PO70EO20) triblock copolymers as a template. The characteristics of mesoporous film are investigated in XRD, TEM. The sensing properties of the self-ordered hexagonal mesoporous SPV system have been investigated by exposing to the NO or NO2 gas and air repeatedly. The changes of the average value and phase of the AC photocurrent (I-ph) have been observed between the NO or NO2 gas and air. Abstract:The mesoporous materials SBA-15 and SBA-16 from the self-assembled template organic framework inorganic compound materials are successfully prepared with powder and film states. The powder state of mesoporous material exhibit a variety of properties and possibilities of these kinds of materials. The film state of these SBA-15 and SBA-16 are successfully fabricated into the surface photo voltage (SPV) type gas sensor device as a gas adsorption insulator layer. These kinds of gas sensors device exhibit NO and NO2 gas sensing properties dependent on their mesoporous film structure. We are succeeded in indication about a possibility of mesoporous silicate film for the SPV type gas sensor application.

Abstract:Mesoporous silica films with hexagonal (SBA-15) and cubic (SBA-16) mesostructures have been successfully employed to fabricate surface photo voltage (SPV) sensors for NO2 gas. These SPV sensors exhibited better sensitivity (S) in 50 ppm NO2 gas than in 100 ppm NO gas. SPV with SBA-16 film showed better sensitivity in 1 ppm NO2 gas than in 1 ppm NO gas. These phenomena can be explained by the physical adsorption of the target gas into the mesoporous layer, which is regarded as the insulator layer in metal -insulator-semiconductor (MIS) devices.

Abstract:The controlled and efficient formation of oxygen vacancies on the surface of metal oxide semiconductors is required for their use in gas sensors. This work addresses the gas-sensing behaviour of tin oxide (SnO2) nanoparticles for nitrogen oxide (NO2), NH3, CO, and H2S detection at various temperatures. Synthesis of SnO2 powder and deposition of SnO2 film is conducted using sol-gel and spin-coating methods, respectively, as these methods are cost-effective and easy to handle. The structural, morphological, and optoelectrical properties of nanocrystalline SnO2 films were studied using XRD, SEM, and UV-visible characterizations. The gas sensitivity of the film was tested by a two-probe resistivity measurement device, showing a better response for the NO2 and outstanding low-concentration detection capacity (down to 0.5 ppm). The anomalous relationship between specific surface area and gas-sensing performance indicates the SnO2 surface's higher oxygen vacancies. The sensor depicts a high sensitivity at 2 ppm for NO2 with response and recovery times of 184 s and 432 s, respectively, at room temperature. The result demonstrates that oxygen vacancies can significantly improve the gas-sensing capability of metal oxide semiconductors.

Abstract:Semiconductor tin oxide (SnO2) is acknowledged to be one of the semiconductor oxides with most potential for utilization as nitrogen dioxide (NO2)-sensor materials. However, the challenge to improve the gas sensitivity still remains, and this limits the full realization of the SnO2 sensor potential. In this paper, enhanced gas sensitivity obtained by the formation of a SnO2/niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5) hybrid structure is reported. As the NO2 concentration is lower to 3 ppm, the measured resistance in the SnO2/Nb2O5-based sensor is still 2.5 times larger than that in a pristine SnO2-based sensor. With an increase in the NO2 concentration, the response time of the SnO2/Nb2O5-based sensor decreases sharply whereas the pristine SnO2-based sensor response time increases. The enhanced performance is attributed to the presence of more oxygen vacancies and a higher specific surface area in the hybrid structure induced by the introduction of Nb2O5. These results provide some general guidelines for the selection of compositions to enhance the sensor performance.

Abstract:Tin oxide-bismuth vanadate heterostructures (SnO 2 -BiVO 4 ) exhibit considerably enhanced surface-exposed edge sites with an abundance of the dangling bond due to their intrinsic crystallographic anisotropy. Its high chemical reactivity and chemisorption capabilities make it ideal for high-performance electrochemical sensing. In this paper, tin oxide-bismuth vanadate heterostructures (SnO 2 -BiVO 4 ) were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal synthesis method and employed as room temperature NO 2 sensor. The heterogeneous structure of as-synthesized SnO 2 -BiVO 4 has been examined via X-ray diffractometers (XRD), scanning electron microscopes (SEM), and transmission electron microscopes. (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) and ultraviolet-visible spectrometer (UV-vis). The as-prepared SnO 2 -BiVO 4 (1:1) exhibited the optimal gas-sensing performance toward 0.1 ppm to 1 ppm NO 2 at relatively low optimal operating temperature (298 K) including fast response, fast recovery, high sensitivity and good reproducibility. The experimental data demonstrated that the as-synthesized SnO 2 -BiVO 4 has huge future potential for real-time detection of the trace of NO 2 at room temperature. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were analyzed to reveal the underlying principles behind the experimentally observed improvement.

Abstract:W- and V-modified mesoporous MCM-41 thin films were investigated as an NO2 gas sensor operable at room temperature employing surface photovoltage (SPV) technique. The self-ordered and structure-controlled of W- and V-modified mesoporous silica MCM-41 were prepared by a molecule surfactant template method using spin coating. The resulting thin films were then applied as a SPV NO2 gas sensor based on a metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) structure. The W- and V-modified mesoporous silica were highly sensitive to a low concentration of NO2, as low as 350ppb, at room temperature. The mechanism of NO2 detection is attributed to both the surface area, which is contributed to the change of dielectric constant, and the amount of the tungsten and vanadium incorporated, which is contributed to the change of semiconductor surface charge. The W-modified mesoporous MCM-41 was found to have better sensing properties than those of the Sn- and V-modified mesoporous MCM-41.

Abstract:High-performance gas sensors have been developed to meet the demand for the trace detection of NO2 given the adverse effects of NO2 posed to the environment and human health. Two-dimensional (2D) metal oxides are considered an emerging class of NO2-sensitive materials. However, their controllable synthesis and poor recovery are two major obstacles to practical NO2 sensing applications. In this study, we prepare tailorable 2D p-type SnO with thicknesses ranging between 1.5 and 3 nm through the precise control of self-limiting oxidation over the liquid Sn surface. At the 0.05 % oxygen concentration, 2D SnO exhibits a lateral dimension as large as 100 μm with a thickness of 1.5 nm, which can be facilely integrated into the field-effect transistor (FET) platform to form 2D devices. The NO2 sensing performance of 2D SnO at room temperature is investigated under the excitation of a broad range of UV-Visible light. The optimum response magnitude to 10 ppm NO2 is achieved at ~205% at 450 nm excitation with excellent reversibility. In addition, the selectivity to NO2 is also explored, indicating an up to one order enhancement over those of CO2, NH3, H2, H2S, CO, and CH4. We ascribe such an improved performance to the optimum band alignment between 1.5 nm-thick SnO and NO2 gas molecules. This work provides a feasible approach to preparing 2D metal oxides and demonstrates that they have great potential for fully reversible gas sensing at room temperature.

Abstract:Semiconducting metal oxides can detect low concentrations of NO2 and other toxic gases, which have been widely investigated in the field of gas sensors. However, most studies on the gas sensing properties of these materials are carried out at high temperatures. In this work, Hollow SnO2 nanofibers were successfully synthesized by electrospinning and calcination, followed by surface modification using ZnO to improve the sensitivity of the SnO2 nanofibers sensor to NO2 gas. The gas sensing behavior of SnO2/ZnO sensors was then investigated at room temperature (~20 & DEG;C). The results showed that SnO2/ZnO nanocomposites exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity to 0.5 ppm of NO2 gas with a response value of 336%, which was much higher than that of pure SnO2 (13%). In addition to the increase in the specific surface area of SnO2/ZnO-3 compared with pure SnO2, it also had a positive impact on the detection sensitivity. This increase was attributed to the heterojunction effect and the selective NO2 physisorption sensing mechanism of SnO2/ZnO nanocomposites. In addition, patterned electrodes of silver paste were printed on different flexible substrates, such as paper, polyethylene terephthalate and polydimethylsiloxane using a facile screen-printing process. Silver electrodes were integrated with SnO2/ZnO into a flexible wearable sensor array, which could detect 0.1 ppm NO2 gas after 10,000 bending cycles. The findings of this study therefore open a general approach for the fabrication of flexible devices for gas detection applications.

Abstract:With the continuous industrialization, as one of the most common air pollutants found in fossil fuels and automobile exhausts, nitride oxide (NO2) monitor is very essential for ensuring good air quality and our body health. 2D materials attract more attention for its special surface and electron structures. MoS2 shows small gas sensing response for its less surface dangling bonds. Here, we introduce a facile method to modify MoS2 with SnO2 as a NO2 receptor via mechanical composite. The MoS2 nanoflowers prepared with a hydrothermal method depicted a high surface/volume ratio and the SnO2 fabricated using a solvothermal method. Mixing ratio and annealing temperature was systematic researched for screening optimal parameters for gas sensor fabrication. The response was enhanced 1.5 time after modification with fast response and recovery time. The p-n heterostructure also provide good selectivity towards NO2 for gas sensing. This work provides a facile alternative for fast and stable response NO2 gas sensor at room temperature.

Abstract:A material is described for sensing NO2 in the gas phase. It has an architecture of type Au/MASnI3/SnO2 (where MA stands for methylammonium cation) and was fabricated by first synthesizing Au/MASnI3 and then crystallizing SnO2 on the surface by calcination. The physical and NO2 sensing properties of the composite were examined at room temperature without and with UV (365 nm) illumination, and the NO2-sensing mechanism was studied. The characterization demonstrated the formation of a p-n heterojunction structure between p-MASnI3 and n-SnO2. The sensor, best operated at a voltage of 1.1 V at room temperature, displays superior NO2 sensing performance. Figures of merit include (a) high response (Rg/Ra = 240 for 5 ppm NO2; where Rg stands for the resistance of a sensor in test gas, and Ra stands for the resistance of a sensor in air), (b) fast recovery (about 12 s), (c) excellent selectivity compared to sensors based on the use of SnO2 or Au/SnO2 only, both at room temperature under UV illumination; (d) a low detection limit (55 ppb), and (e) a linear response between 0.5 and 10 ppm of NO2. The enhanced sensing performance is mainly attributed to the high light absorption capacity of MASnI3, the easy generation and transfer of photo-induced electrons from MASnI3 to the conduction band of SnO2, and the catalytic effect of gold nanoparticles.

Abstract:Abstract The higher operating temperature of metal oxide and air instability of organic based NO 2 sensor causes extremely urgent for development of a reliable low cost sensor to detect NO 2 at room temperature. Therefore, we present a fabrication of large area Polymer/GO nano hybrid thin film for polymer thin film transistors (PTFTs) based NO 2 sensors assisted via facile method named ‘spreading-solidifying (SS) method’, grown over air/liquid interface and successive investigation of effect of NO 2 on film via several characterizations. The PTFTs sensor has demonstrated swift and high response towards low concentration of NO 2 gas with air stability and provided real time non-invasive type NO 2 sensor. Herein, we are reporting the nanohybrid PBTTT/GO composite based PTFT sensor with good repeatability and sensor response for low concentration NO 2 . The thin film grown via SS technique has reported very good adsorption/desorption of target analyte having response/recovery time of 75 s/523 s for 10 ppm concentration of NO 2 gas. It has been observed that % change in drain current (sensor response) saturated with increasing concentration of NO 2 . The transient analysis demonstrates the fast sensor response and recovery time. Furthermore, in order to understand the insight of high performance of sensor, effect of NO 2 on nanohybrid film and sensing mechanism, an in situ investigations was conducted via multiple technique viz. spectral, electronic, structural, and morphological characterization. Finally, the performance of sensor and the site of adsorption of NO 2 at polymer chains were argued using schematic diagram. This work shows the simple fabrication process for mass production, low cost and room temperature operated gas sensors for monitoring the real-time environment conditions and gives an insight about the sensing mechanism adsorption site of NO 2 .

Abstract:In this paper, a coral-like tin diselenide/MOFs-derived flower-like tin dioxide (SnSe2/SnO2) nanocomposite film sensor was fabricated by hydrothermal method for NO2 gas detection. Many characterization methods were used to examine the structural composition and micro-morphology of SnSe2, SnO2, and SnSe2/SnO2 samples. At room temperature, the SnSe2/SnO2 composite film sensor had a higher response to 20 ppm NO2 gas when the mass ratio of SnSe2 and SnO2 was 1:2. A series of experiments were performed to investigate the NO2 sensing properties of this sensor. The results of gas-sensing tests indicated that the SnSe2/SnO2 (1:2) nanocomposite sensor had excellent NO2 gas sensitivity performance, better linearity and selectivity compared with pristine SnSe2 and SnO2 film sensors. In particular, the response value of the SnSe2/SnO2 nanocomposite sensor towards 20 ppm NO2 gas was obviously improved from 7.4 to 12.6 under UV illumination, and the response/recovery times towards 10 ppm NO2 gas were shortened from 110 s/160 to 80 s/144 s. The possible NO2 sensing mechanism was related to the heterostructure between n-type SnSe2 and n-type SnO2 nanomaterials, and at the same time, we proposed that photoelectrons excited by UV light could improve the sensing characteristics of the SnSe2/SnO2 nanocomposite towards NO2 gas.

Abstract:In the pandemic era, the development of high-performance indoor air quality monitoring sensors has become more critical than ever. NO2 is one of the most toxic gases in daily life, which induces severe respiratory diseases. Thus, the real-time monitoring of low concentrations of NO2 is highly required. Herein, a visible light-driven ultrasensitive and selective chemoresistive NO2 sensor is presented based on sulfur-doped SnO2 nanoparticles. Sulfur-doped SnO2 nanoparticles are synthesized by incorporating l-cysteine as a sulfur doping agent, which also increases the surface area. The cationic and anionic doping of sulfur induces the formation of intermediate states in the band gap, highly contributing to the substantial enhancement of gas sensing performance under visible light illumination. Extraordinary gas sensing performances such as the gas response of 418 to 5 ppm of NO2 and a detection limit of 0.9 ppt are achieved under blue light illumination. Even under red light illumination, sulfur-doped SnO2 nanoparticles exhibit stable gas sensing. The endurance to humidity and long-term stability of the sensor are outstanding, which amplify the capability as an indoor air quality monitoring sensor. Overall, this study suggests an innovative strategy for developing the next generation of electronic noses.

Abstract:This study reported a novel humidity-insensitive nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) gas sensor based on tin dioxide (SnO 2 )/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composites through the sol-gel method. The sensor demonstrated ppb-level NO 2 detection in p-type sensing behaviors (13.6% response to 750 ppb). Because of the synergistic effect on SnO 2 /rGO p-n heterojunction, the sensing performance was greatly enhanced compared to that of bare rGO. The limit of detection of sensors was as low as 6.7 ppb under dry air. Moreover, benefited from the formed superhydrophobic structure of the SnO 2 /rGO composites (contact angle: 149.0°), the humidity showed a negligible influence on the dynamic response (S g ) of the sensor to different concentration of NO 2 when increasing the relative humidity (RH) from 0 to 70% at 116°C. The relative conductivity of the sensor to 83% relative humidity was 0.11%. In addition, the response ratio (S g /S RH ) between 750 ppb NO 2 and 83% RH was 649.0, indicating the negligible impaction of high-level ambient humidity on the sensor. The as-fabricated humidity-insensitive gas sensor can promise NO 2 detection in real-world applications such as safety alarm, chemical engineering, and so on.
