Different intervals of misoprostol administration for termination of second trimester pregnancy:a randomized controlled trail

Abstract:Objective To compare the effect of misoprostol administered at different intervals and mifepristone for termination of second trimester pregnancy,so as to know the optimal administration of the 2 agents.Methods A total of 100 healthy women at 12—16 w of pregnancy,who were seeking to terminate pregnancy with medical abortion,were randomized into group A(n=50) and B(n=50).Initially,both group had mifepristone 200 mg orally.Women in group A also received misoprostol 600 μg vaginally after 36-48 h,then miso-prostol(400 μg in each dose,4 doses as maximal) were vaginally given every 3 h after previous administration.Women in group B received misoprostol 600 μg vaginally together with mifepristone,then misoprostol(400 μg in each dose,4 doses as maximal) were vaginally given every 3 h after previous administration.Results Women in group A expelled gestational sac within(314.04±139.52) min on average,which was significantly shorter than that in group B([513.8±220.04] min,P<0.01).The mean dosage of misoprostol was(1 008.0±285.6) μg for women in group A and(1 512.0±302.8) μg in group B(P<0.01).Mean body peak temperature for group A was(37.35±0.58) ℃,significantly lower than that in group B([38.27±0.90]℃,P<0.01).Conclusion When combined with mifepristone,misoprostol is more effectively in second trimester pregnancy termination if applied 36-48 h after mifepristone administration,and the total doses of misprostol in women is reduced and the expel of gestational sac is quicker,with the peak body temperature of patients decreased.
