Abstract:In this paper, the general Cochrane sum is defined. The main purpose is to study the mean square value problem of general Cochrane sum by using the estimates for trigonometric sums and the properties of general Kloosterman sum, and finally give a sharp asymptotic formula.

These sums were introduced by Todd Cochrane. In October 2000, during his visit in Xi’an, Professor Todd Cochrane suggested studying the arithmetical and mean value distribution properties of C(h, q). On this subject, many interesting results have been obtained; related work can be found in [4], [7], [8] and [9]. Abstract:In this paper, we defined a new generalized Cochrane sum with Dirichlet characters, and gave the upper bound of the generalized Cochrane sum with Dirichlet characters. Moreover, we studied the asymptotic estimation problem of the mean value of the generalized Cochrane sum with Dirichlet characters and obtained a sharp asymptotic formula for it. By using this asymptotic formula, we also gave the mean value of the generalized Dedekind sum.

Abstract:Let q ⩾ 3 be an integer, let χ denote a Dirichlet character modulo q . For any real number a ⩾ 0 we define the generalized Dirichlet L-functions L(s,χ ,a) = ∑_n = 1^∞χ (n)/(n + a)^s , where s = σ + it with σ > 1 and t both real. They can be extended to all s by analytic continuation. In this paper we study the mean value properties of the generalized Dirichlet L -functions especially for s = 1 and s = 1/2 + i t , and obtain two sharp asymptotic formulas by using the analytic method and the theory of van der Corput.
