Abstract:Human beings’ moral life can be divided into two forms, one based on moral instincts and the other on moral judgments. The former is carried on without deliberation, while the latter relies upon valuations and judgments. The two can ultimately be viewed as man’s innate moral nature and acquired moral conventions. Theoretically, preference for the former will lead to naturalism and for the latter to culturalism, but this is the reality of man’s moral life. Moreover, there may be a parallel relation between the moral structure of human life and the grammatical structure of human language.

Abstract:People tend to be unable to evaluate themselves accurately in many areas. One such area is their own and others’ morality. The current research explores the self–other moral valuation difference in the context of moral foundation theory. We propose that people generally have a moral positive illusion. Specifically, people overestimate their own morality and underestimate the morality of others. Two studies provide converging evidence that individuals underestimate the average moral valuations of others on the five dimensions of moral foundation theory. In particular, we demonstrate three moderators for moral positive illusion: moral foundation type, gender, and political identity. Specifically, compared with the binding foundations, people have greater moral positive illusions based on the individualizing foundations; compared to men, women have greater moral positive illusions; and compared with liberals, conservatives have greater moral positive illusions based on the binding foundations.

Abstract:The I or the self is the most intimate and familiar phenomena, but it is one of the most perplexing phenomenon in our intellectual life. The mind science has deeply studied various aspects of mental agents such as intentionality, perception, behavior, memory, learning, image, emotion, thinking, language, imagination, unconscious and even consciousness, however, unless tied closely with the notion of the self, all the aspects of mind mentioned above can be significatively talked about. At the same time, we have to immediately emphasize that the self is not a pole of entity like homunculus. So we argue that the self can be understood just from a perspective of structure. Human ordinary experience shows that the self primarily begins with a kind of living phenomena. F. Maturana J. Varela described the general structure of the self as a living being in terms of the notion of autopoeisis. The most basic feature of living beings—even the simplest live beings—is that living beings are autonomous individuals which have built a kind of the most primitive relationship of intentionality or meaning with the world. There are different morphologies of self in the evolutionary and developmental different levels of life-mind. The unified sense of self is the most direct experience in human ordinary life, which our knowledge of the self starts from. Unlike the self as a pure living being, how does the self with the sense of self come to being? A. Dmamasio argues that the neurobiology of consciousness faces two problems: the problem of how the movie-in-the-brain is generated, and the problem of how the brain generates the sense that there is an observer and owner for the movie, namely the sense of self. How are feelings embodied?—it is central to the current study of neural self. The perplexity from the self not only consists in the inherent particularity, but also the particular circulation relationship between the self and the world. Only when the circulation relationship is understood well, we can completely grasp the nature of self.

Abstract:Moral identity is a new hot issue in the field of moral education psychology after Kohlberg's theory of moral judgment stages. But up to now, the research on it is unsatisfactory, which is related to its vague concept and one-sidedness. In this article, four main views and researches were introduced, and it was advocated that moral identity should be regarded as the evolving structure of moral personality and the core of self- identity. Equally important is that the essence of moral identity is moral identification and the transcendence of self. In the future, both quantitative and qualitative research should be adopted so that the essence of moral identity can be truly demonstrated and the significance of moral identity research can be improved.

Abstract:Moral nativism is a theory of moral cognition which holds that significant elements of human moral psychology are innate. In this invited chapter for The Oxford Handbook of Moral Psychology, I first summarize the intuitive turn in recent moral psychology and explain its significance for moral nativism. Drawing on an analogy to language, I then outline two principal arguments for moral nativism: the argument for moral grammar and the argument from the poverty of the moral stimulus. After making some terminological clarifications and correcting some popular misconceptions, I then review some of the most significant research supporting moral nativism, including empirical studies of compassion, empathy, and altruistic motivation in humans and other primates; the intuitive jurisprudence of young children; the emergence of moral cognition in human infants and toddlers; the neurocognitive foundations of moral judgment; and human moral universals. The chapter concludes by locating moral nativism within a broader historical and scientific context, including ancient philosophy (e.g., Plato’s Meno), Enlightenment rationalism (e.g., Descartes’ Treatise on Man), evolutionary theory (e.g., Darwin’s Descent of Man), and the modern cognitive science of innate knowledge.

Abstract:Morality is central to social well-being and cognition, and moral lexicon is a key device for human communication of moral concepts and experiences. How was the moral lexicon formed? We explore this open question and hypothesize that words evolved to take on abstract moral meanings from concrete and grounded experiences. We test this hypothesis by analyzing semantic change and formation of over 800 words from the English Moral Foundations Dictionary and the Historical Thesaurus of English over the past hundreds of years. Across historical text corpora and dictionaries, we discover concrete-to-abstract shifts as words acquire moral meaning, in contrast with the broad observation that words become more concrete over time. Furthermore, we find that compound moral words tend to be derived from a concrete-to-abstract shift from their constituents, and this derivational property is more prominent in moral words compared to alternative compound words when word frequency is controlled for. We suggest that evolution of the moral lexicon depends on systematic metaphorical mappings from concrete domains to the moral domain. Our results provide large-scale evidence for the role of metaphor in shaping the historical development of the English moral lexicon.

Abstract:Moral identity is associated with people’s subjective well-being; however, little is known about how an individual with moral identity relates to one’s subjective well-being. Based on the eudaimonic identity theory, the current study proposed that identity commitment quality is a critical mechanism that links moral identity (two dimensions: internalization and symbolization) and subjective well-being. We examined our hypotheses in 419 college students, who completed the Self-importance of Moral Identity Questionnaire, Satisfaction with Life Scale, Scale of Positive and Negative Experience, and Questionnaire for Eudaimonic Well-being. Results confirmed significant positive correlations among moral identity, identity commitment quality, and subjective well-being; findings also suggested that both the internalization and symbolization dimensions of moral identity predicted subjective well-being through identity commitment quality, and identity commitment quality fully mediated the pathway relationship between moral identity and subjective well-being. We discussed these findings with respect to implications and proposed research suggestions for future studies.

Abstract:Moral identity is a hot issue in psychology and other social sciences.Up to now, the abstract characteristics of moral identity has been studied in psychology, rarely involving it's formation process and content in specific culture.Chinese traditional moral culture, based on Confucianism, emphasizes the extreme importance of morality and the individual's responsibility to practise morality.As a result, moral identity becomes a complex personality structure based on the moral belief of becoming a saint or sage.In Chinese history, with the help of God worship and ancestor worship, the cultural mechanism of constructing moral identity has been formed.The individual mechanism of moral identity construction is not only self-cultivation, but also smelting through social institutions and family.In the future, it is necessary to study the specific content, characteristics and construction mechanism of moral identity in the background of the traditional Chinese moral culture, and study the evolution trend of Chinese moral identity combined with the transformation of contemporary moral culture.
