Abstract:Objective To evaluate the impact of reduction in the number of embryos transferred from 3 to 2 on the clinical pregnancy rate and the incidence of multiple pregnancies during in-vitro fertilization treatment. Methods 424 cycles were performed in all patients aged ≤ 35 years from Aug 2002 to Aug 2004 in the Reproductive Medicine Center of Drum Tower Hospital Affiliated to Nanjing University Medical School. All consecutive cycles were divided into two groups, 2-embryos group (235 cycles) and 3-embryos group (189 cycles). The implantation rate, the clinical pregnancy rate and the incidence of multiple pregnancies were compared between the two groups. Results The implantation rate, and the clinical pregnancy rate were similar between 2-embryos group and 3-embryos group (40.85% vs 40.92%, 59.57% vs 67.20%, P> 0.05). The incidence of singleton in 2-embryos group was significantly higher than that in 3-embryos group (64.29 vs 40.16%,P< 0.01); meanwhile, the multiple pregnancy rate per transfer significantly decreased (1.43% vs 22.83%,P< 0.01). However, the incidence of twins was similar in the two groups (34.29% vs 37.01%, P> 0.05).Conclusions The transfer of two embryos reduces the number of multiple pregnancies (especially, high order multiple pregnancies) without impairing the pregnancy rate.
