Abstract:Quality accident of pile happened,and the character of pile foundation is analyzed according to the geological condition and bearing capacity.The reinforcements which based on the principle of pile-soil interaction is adopted,soil supported load to compensate inadequate bearing capacity of pile.foundation and pile is separated in structure and cushion is applied,and the effective technical measure urge pile-soil distortion coordinate,then pile-soil interaction is achieved.furthermore,engineering project hold that foundation of bearing capacity and settlement can meet with the requirement.

Abstract:The quality of vibro-driven cast-in-place pile got worse in the course of construction in Wenzhou.Comparing with different plans of foundation reinforcement,the rigid-flexible piles composite foundation is applied.Effective measures are taken to solve the problem of pile-soil displacement incoordination due to different elastic modulus of rigid pile,flexible pile and soil.Monitoring data shows that the load capacity and settlement have met the demands.

Abstract:Recent studies and in-situ tests have found that the ground improvement under embankment is largely different from the building foundation due to embankment' smaller rigidity.The side friction of pile,the axial stress within piles and the depth of pile end penetrating into the embankment and soil were studied numerically under different cushion moduli,pile moduli,soil moduli,replacement ratio and pile length.The author point out that the penetration depth of pile end under embankment disagree with that mentioned in the Technical Code of Pile Foundations due to different causes of pile end penetration.

Abstract:GPR(ground penetrating radar)technique has the advantages of quick,accurateness and real-time processing/display especially available to collect continuously high-resolution sections of underground pile. Investigating quantitatively and qualitatively the relationship of GPR information to the pile integrity including shape and length of macadam, powder spray pile and bottom expansion pile, an effective complete set of applications of GPR detection technique and relevant operation procedures was found out and proposed as supplement highly beneficial to the conventional detection procedure. Moreover, the characteristics of testing and detection technique were discussed and evaluated under different conditions, with proposed method exemplified to verify its feasibility and usefulness. The results showed that GPR technology will provide a big amount of detailed reliable information to the engineering quality inspection of underground piles of composite foundation structures.
Stability Satisfied Design and Construction of Excavated Soil Dumps in a Soft Soil Region in China

Abstract:Dumping is the main disposal method of the excavated soil from underground engineering in China; however, due to a lack of construction experiences and technical standards, landslide disasters often occurred during rapid dumping of excavated soil in soft soil regions. In this paper, geotechnical tests were conducted on the excavated soil from a foundation engineering site in Hangzhou, where the excavated soil would be used to construct a piled mountain. On this basis, a numerical study was carried out to investigate the effects of the design parameters (heap height, slope gradient) and construction parameters (layer thickness, heap speed) on the dump stability and failure mode. The results show that the safety factor of the excavated soil dump decreases with increasing heap height, slope gradient, layer thickness, and heap speed. The potential slide surfaces are toe circle, and compared to layer thickness and heap speed, the heap height and slope gradient have more remarkable influence on the depth and area of potential slide mass. The heap height limit increases with a decrease in slope gradient, and the heap speed limit decreases with an increase in layer thickness. Under the premise of ensuring the slope stability, the optimal design and construction parameters were obtained, i.e., heap height 28 m, slope gradient 1:2.75, layer thickness 1.0 m, and heap speed 0.50 m/day. Compared to the original design scheme, the storage capacity increases by 20.01%, and the construction duration decreases by 30.25% in the optimal design.

Abstract:The in-situ experiment data of subgrade improved by plain concrete and mixed-in-place pile under bad geological condition and condition of different filling construction material were analyzed, including excess pore pressure, layer settlement of soils between piles, additional effective stress and lateral displacement. It shows that surface layer stress of composite subgrade with plain concrete pile improved by plain concrete is focused on pile and is diffused to deep layer; there is displacement between pile and soil on the tip and bottom of pile, so that it exists the single pile effect. But concerning subgrade improved by the mixed-in-place pile, it is reinforcement unitarity, so there isn't relative displacement between pile and soil; the stress is focused on the tip and bottom of pile and load is transferred to soil under the bottom of pile and substratum.

Abstract:The load transfer mechanism and deformation characteristics of cast-in-place piles in composite foundation with rigid-flexible piles are different from that in free state. Working property of pile is complex due to interaction between rigid pile, flexible pile and soil. Static load tests of the same pile under different situation are carried out in Wenzhou. On the basis of monitoring data in the process of static load test, settlement characteristics, load transfer mechanism and compression of pile shaft are analyzed; the conclusions can benefit to engineering design and construction.

Abstract:To simulate the stress migration in local damage and cracking of piles, ABAQUS software was used to establish a 3-D analytical model of composite foundation improved by rigid piles with concrete damage plasticity model. Stress and failure mechanism of piles were studied in the process of embankment reclamation and loading. The results show that concrete damage model has good performances in predicting the reduction of pill stiffness and redistribution of internal forces; the linear elastic model yielded higher moment and lower displacement; Unlike ultimate moment under pure bending, the maximum moment in pile depends on its location with respect to the embankment; When the embankment is approaching failure, piles outside the shoulder tend to subject to stretch-bending or compression-bending failure while piles close to the embankment center mainly bear vertical pressure; pile failure could hardly occur in the first place as it is usually caused by failure of embankment slope; Shear failure unlikely occur in rigid piles.

Abstract:The lateral displacements of anti-slide piles are monitored using inclinometer.The internal forces of anti-slide piles were estimated through back analysis of the lateral displacement and then compared with the design internal forces.The operation state of the anti-slide piles could be deduced from the internal forces,which may be divided into the stable state,the limit security state and the instable state.In the stable state,the anti-slide pile still contains certain margin of safety;in the limit state,the anti-slide pile fully plays its role,and it is in the critical state of invalidation;in the instable state,the anti-slide piles cannot meet the required standard,which may lead to the failure of the anti-slide,therefore,the monitoring should be strengthened and the new reinforcement measure is needed.The anti-slide piles in project are in the stable state by back analysis based on data.

Abstract:The stability analysis methods for composite foundation improved by rigid piles under embankment are imperfect at present. The finite element method is used to analyze the damage process and failure mode of the piles under embankment. Due to the position of piles, there are significant differences between rigid piles to the contribution of embankment stability. The failure modes of piles can be divided into three categories: compression failure, bending failure and tensile failure, and the piles can be classified and partitioned according to their failure modes. Based on the principle of the limit equilibrium methods, the stability analysis method for rigid pile composite foundation under embankment considering the difference of failure modes is put forward and compared with other four kinds of stable analysis methods. It is shown that the results of this method are the closest to those of numerical analysis method, and this method is reasonable and feasible.

Abstract:Quality control of bored pile is crucial to the safety and durability of the whole project. This study proposes corresponding control measures for the main quality problems existing in the construction process of bored pile, including site preparation, drilling construction, steel cage production, concrete pouring and other links. Effective quality control measures can significantly improve the overall quality of bored pile, to ensure the safety and durability of highway bridge engineering.

Abstract:Along with the growth in freeway mileage,the amount and capacity of vehicles,bridges as traffic hinges are facing with a more and more serious risk,namely vehicle collision with pier.To date,the design specifications in many countries,such as China,US,Britain,etc.,have included some provisions addressing vehicle collision with bridge piers.However,the review finds that(1) most of the provisions adopt a simple static design method,without considering the parameters of pier,such as stiffness and ductility;(2) some of the origins of the provisions are rather vague,and others merely use foreign standard for reference,thus the effectiveness of these provisions is doubtable;(3) there is no provision addressing the prerequisite of the anti-collision design of piers in Chinese standard,and so designers should decide by themselves whether or not the collision force should be considered.This negative provision would probably result in a negligent of the collision effect in practice.In view of these,the studies on vehicle anti-collision on bridge piers from the aspects of protective structure around the bridge pier and the pier itself were reviewed.Some major problems and proposals were presented.

Abstract:Pile foundations are provided for structures, where soil at the top layers possesses low bearing capacity. A comprehensive understanding of pile foundation located in liquefiable soils is a key requirement to enable designer to arrive at an economic design and for safe performance of structure during its intended service life. The failure of various structures on pile foundation system in liquefied soil subjected to earthquake load shows limitation of present methodologies available for design. Hence, study of pile foundations in liquefiable soil under earthquake loading attracted attention of researchers over many years. In addition, many governing factors, as compiled by researchers during analysis and design of pile foundation in liquefiable soils, need to be critically analysed. Therefore, in present paper comparative aspects of various issues addressed by different researchers are presented. It briefs about various International Codes followed in design and analysis. This review article also provides analytical study/numerical model developments, and experimental works performed by various researchers with an effort to bring out the progress in analysis and design. The current paper also discussed various behavioural issues, design aspects, recommendations by researchers dealing with proablems of pile foundation considering liquefaction condition of soil and some exemplary cases.

Abstract:Taking a deep foundation pit accident supported by soil-nailing wall and cantilever piles as an example, the scheme of the original design and reinforcement design for its first reinforcement is introduced. The causes of the accident are analyzed from the aspects of design, construction, management and so on. The scheme of secondary reinforcement design for this project is proposed. The method for the design of secondary reinforcement of the foundation pit and the key points are discussed. Some useful conclusions are drawn for similar projects as a reference.

Abstract:Deep cement mixing piles are a key technology for treating settlement distress of soft soil subgrade. However, it is very challenging to accurately evaluate the quality of pile construction due to the limitations of pile material, large number of piles and small pile spacing. Here, we propose the idea of transforming defect detection of piles into quality evaluation of ground improvement. Geological models of pile group reinforced subgrade are constructed and their ground-penetrating radar response characteristics are revealed. We have also developed ground-penetrating radar attribute analysis technology and established ground-penetrating radar technical system for evaluating the quality of ground improvement. We further prove that the ground-penetrating radar results integrating single-channel waveform, multi-channel section and attributes can effectively detect the defects and stratum structure after ground improvement. Our research results provide a rapid, efficient and economic technical solution for the quality evaluation of ground improvement in soft soil subgrade reinforcement engineering.

Abstract:An engineering project of the super-long rock-socketed bored piles crossing a huge thick gravel layer with about 40 m depth was conducted at a 350 m high-rise building in Wenzhou area. The selection of drilling machine,the drilling method in different soil layers,the construction technology in crossing a huge thick gravel layer,the preparation of mud and the bore hole cleaning technology were presented to discuss details of the construction technology of the over 100-meter super-long bored piles. Moreover,the pile diameter and the ultrasound test were used to analyze the quality of drilled hole and pile shaft,respectively. In addition,a large tonnage static load test was conducted to capture the bearing capacity and the settlement of test pile. Some key findings indicate that the varying drilling processes,the high quality mud and the variable drilling methods can be adopted in different soil layers during the construction of the super-long bored piles. During a super-long pile construction in a gravel layer,the mud leakage and the borehole collapse can be solved by adjusting the property of mud,whereas the bits with variable diameter and the pump suction reverse circulation drilling can be adopted to improve the drilling efficiency. The static load test shows that the percentage of the super-long pile settlement at the pile head caused by the pile compression is over 90% within the working load. It can also be concluded that the thickness of the sediments at the pile end has an influence on the settlement of the super-long pile.
