Abstract:Chitosan oligosaccharide is natural in source and abundant in resources. It has the functions of lowering blood fat, anti-tumor and inhibiting pathogenic microorganisms. The further degraded Chi?tosan oligosaccharide is a green additive, and has biological functions such as anti-oxidation, enhance?ment of immunity, regulation of intestinal flora and the like. In the large environment of feed forbidden resistance, Chitosan oligosaccharide has the potential to partially replace antibiotics. This article takes this as a starting point to explain the mechanism of action of Chitosan oligosaccharide in animals from the aspects of promoting animal growth performance, regulating lipid metabolism, improving antioxi?dant performance and immune performance, and to expound its application in poultry production, so as to provide reference for promoting the application of Chitosan oligosaccharide in poultry feed.

Abstract:Chitin is the most abundant natural amino polysaccharide, showing various practical applications owing to its functional properties. However, there are barriers in the development due to the difficulty of chitin extraction and purification, regarding its high crystallinity and low solubility. In recent years, some novel technologies such as microbial fermentation, ionic liquid, electrochemical extraction have emerged for the green extraction of chitin from new sources. Furthermore, nanotechnology, dissolution systems and chemical modification were applied to develop a variety of chitin-based biomaterials. Remarkably, chitin was used in delivering active in-gredients and developing functional foods for weight loss, lipid reduction, gastrointestinal health, and anti-aging. Moreover, the application of chitin-based materials was expanded into medicine, energy and the environment. This review outlined the emerging extraction methods and processing routes of different chitin sources and advances in applying chitin-based materials. We aimed to provide some direction for the multi-disciplinary production and application of chitin.

Abstract:Chitosan, a natural renewable resource of the earth, belongs to nonpoisonous and pollution-free security animal hormone substance. The important development of chitosan used as biopesticide was summarized in this paper. Chitosan plays very important roles in many aspects, especially the induction of plant disease resistance, the bioactivity as pesticide and germicide, plant resisting to adverse conditions, seed-coating, fruits and vegetables storage, insecticidal synergism, soil improvement, plastic film degrade, promoting growth, increasing yield and improving quality. these have been demonstrated in many crops including wheat, corn, rice, soybean, potato, cucumber, tomato, celery, green pepper, chinese cabbage, banana, mango, apple, pear and straw berry. Chitosan’s extensive applicative prospect in agriculture production was showed.

Abstract:Chitosan is derived from chitin polysaccharide, the main component of crustacean shells. Chitosan is a biocompatible, nontoxic, and biodegradable polymer soluble in acidic solutions. It is widely used in the medical and pharmaceutical fields. Antimicrobial activities of chitosan against different bacterial, fungal, and viral pathogens have been considered one of its attractive properties, making chitosan valuable for biological applications, including textile, food, tissue engineering, agriculture, and environmental protection. Additionally, chitosan has beneficial effects on livestock, poultry, fish, and crustaceans, which can enhance immunity, improve feed conversion, and promote growth. However, the water solubility of chitosan influences antimicrobial capabilities, limiting its application. In the present work, we reviewed the preparation, factors affecting antimicrobial activity, morphological structure, antimicrobial mechanism, and application of chitosan derivatives, and the problems and prospects were pointed out. Collectively, this review provided an update on the application of chitosan derivatives and their potential for further advanced applications in the antimicrobial field.

Abstract:Chitin is a nitrogen-containing natural organic polymer, possesses excellent biological activity, safety and degradability, and has a great prospect in agriculture, chemical industry, environmental protection, food, pharmaceutical and other industries. The traditional acid-base method and the emerging microbial fermentation are two main methods for chitin preparation. Abstract:Chitin as the second plentiful polysaccharide has arouse widely attention due to its remarkable availability and biocompatibility. While the strong inter/intra molecular hydrogen bonds and crystallinity severely restrict its applications. Recently, multiple emerging technologies are increasingly used to modify chitin structure for the sake of obtaining excellent functional properties, as well as broadening the corresponding applications. Firstly, this review systematically outlines the features of single and combined methods for chitin modification. Then, the impacts of various modifying methods on the structural characteristics of chitin, including molecular weight, degree of acetylation and functional groups, are further summarized. In addition, the effects of these structural characteristics on the functional properties as well as its potential related applications are illustrated. The conclusion of this review provides better understanding of the relationships among the modifying methods, structure, properties and applications, contributing to chitin modification for the targeted purpose in the future study.

Abstract:Chitin is a major structural polysaccharide after cellulose and exists as the most abundant polymer in nature. Chitin is a nitrogen-containing homopolymer of β-(1,4) linked N-Acetylglucosamine. It is a key cell wall component of fungi, also found in a wide range of organisms, including viruses, plants, animals, insect exoskeletons, and crustacean shells. This review focused on the recent developments of applications of chitin, chitinases, and chitin derivatives in biomedicinal, agricultural and environmental perspectives for sustainable development. Chitinases are hydrolytic enzymes responsible for the degradation of chitin and are used in biocontrol against various fungal pathogens and insects to reduce the uses of synthetic fungicides and insecticides. These can serve as sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives to pesticides. Chitinases producing microorganisms are a potential alternative to these chemicals which are present in the soil as a part of the ecosystem. Chitin derivatives and chitinases have significant pharmacological values and are effective as an anti-inflammatory drug, ulcerative colitis, anticancer and gastrointestinal disorders. The significant medical roles of chitinases have also been observed to amplifying the functioning of antifungal drugs during the treatment of fungal diseases. These enzymes can be used for strengthened the human immune system and also employed antifungal creams and lotions as rightly expected. Chitin derivatives have a number of applications in the making of artificial medical articles, including contact lenses, artificial skin, and surgical stitches. These derivatives have been extensively used in making artificial medical products because of its non-toxic, non-allergic, biocompatible, and biodegradable properties. Chitin and its derivatives used for environmental applications comprise bioremediation of organic and inorganic contaminants from soil and water along with biological conversions of chitinous waste to the single-cell proteins, bioethanol, and biofertilizers as well.

Abstract:Chitin is a kind of natural macromolecule material which was first discovered in mushrooms and was widely found in the shells of crustaceans and arthropods, the cell walls of fungi (yeast and mold) and algae, and the mollusks. The original chitin in nature usually has an antiparallel molecular chain alignment forming nanofibers connected by inter‐ and intramolecular hydrogen bonds. These microfibers consist of nanofibers about 2‐5 nm in diameter, and about 300 nm long, embedded by protein matrices. Due to their unique dimensional, optical, mechanical, and other characteristics, the preparation of nano‐chitin materials is an important subject. It is possible to extract nano‐chitins from their sources with various methods, including acid hydrolysis, mechanical disintegration, TEMPO‐mediated oxidation, electrospinning, and others. In this article, the latest progress in recent years in the preparation and applications of nano‐chitin were reviewed. The morphology of the nano‐chitins obtained from the above methods was presented. The advantages and disadvantages of each method were analyzed. An overview of applications of nano‐chitins was discussed, including biomedicine, food applications, water treatment, green electronic materials, enzyme immobilization carriers, cotton textile materials, cosmetics, and others.

Abstract:Insects, renowned for their abundant and renewable biomass, stand at the forefront of biomimicry-inspired research and offer promising alternatives for chitin and chitosan production considering mounting environmental concerns and the inherent limitations of conventional sources. This comprehensive review provides a meticulous exploration of the current state of insect-derived chitin and chitosan, focusing on their sources, production methods, characterization, physical and chemical properties, and emerging biomedical applications. Abundant insect sources of chitin and chitosan, from the Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, Orthoptera, Hymenoptera, Diptera, Hemiptera, Dictyoptera, Odonata, and Ephemeroptera orders, were comprehensively summarized. A variety of characterization techniques, including spectroscopy, chromatography, and microscopy, were used to reveal their physical and chemical properties like molecular weight, degree of deacetylation, and crystallinity, laying a solid foundation for their wide application, especially for the biomimetic design process. The examination of insect-derived chitin and chitosan extends into a wide realm of biomedical applications, highlighting their unique advantages in wound healing, tissue engineering, drug delivery, and antimicrobial therapies. Their intrinsic biocompatibility and antimicrobial properties position them as promising candidates for innovative solutions in diverse medical interventions.

Abstract:In order to get an overview of the worldwide advance of research on chito/chitin oligosaccharides and its monomers, the open published literatures on Web of Science and Wanfang data were retrieved and analysed. It is obvious that the amount of studies on chitooligosaccharides rapidly grows after it overcame problems of large-scale production, and China shares the main parts of the industrial yield and academic research of chitooligosaccharides. However, there are still many crisis problems in industrial-scale preparation and green manufacture. The predominant application fields of chitooligosaccharides is agriculture as fertilizer. Nevertheless, the literatures about chitinoligosaccharides are far more less than that of chitooligosaccharides, and among which most focused on preparation study. It shows that the preparation technolgy of chitinoligosaccharides is still the bottleneck, there might be an explosive growth of research when a breakthrough is made in the preparation technology.

Abstract:Many by-products that are harmful to the environment and human health are generated during food processing. However, these wastes are often potential resources with high-added value. For example, crustacean waste contains large amounts of chitin. Chitin is one of the most abundant polysaccharides in natural macromolecules, and is a typical component of crustaceans, mollusks, insect exoskeleton and fungal cell walls. Chitosan is prepared by deacetylation of chitin and a copolymer of D-glucosamine and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine through beta-(1 -> 4)-glycosidic bonds. Chitosan has better solubility, biocompatibility and degradability compared with chitin. This review introduces the preparation, physicochemical properties, chemical and physical modification methods of chitosan, which could help us understand its biological activities and applications. According to the latest reports, the antibacterial activity, antioxidant, immune and antitumor activities of chitosan and its derivatives are summarized. Simultaneously, the various applications of chitosan and its derivatives are reviewed, including food, chemical, textile, medical and health, and functional materials. Finally, some insights into its future potential are provided, including novel modification methods, directional modification according to structure-activity relationship, activity and application development direction, etc. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V.
