Abstract:Chitosan is a product of the deacetylation of chitin, which is widely found in nature. Chitosan is insoluble in water and most organic solvents, which seriously limits both its application scope and applicable fields. However, chitosan contains active functional groups that are liable to chemical reactions; thus, chitosan derivatives can be obtained through the chemical modification of chitosan. The modification of chitosan has been an important aspect of chitosan research, showing a better solubility, pH-sensitive targeting, an increased number of delivery systems, etc. This review summarizes the modification of chitosan by acylation, carboxylation, alkylation, and quaternization in order to improve the water solubility, pH sensitivity, and the targeting of chitosan derivatives. The applications of chitosan derivatives in the antibacterial, sustained slowly release, targeting, and delivery system fields are also described. Chitosan derivatives will have a large impact and show potential in biomedicine for the development of drugs in future.

Abstract:Chitosan oligosaccharide is natural in source and abundant in resources. It has the functions of lowering blood fat, anti-tumor and inhibiting pathogenic microorganisms. The further degraded Chi?tosan oligosaccharide is a green additive, and has biological functions such as anti-oxidation, enhance?ment of immunity, regulation of intestinal flora and the like. In the large environment of feed forbidden resistance, Chitosan oligosaccharide has the potential to partially replace antibiotics. This article takes this as a starting point to explain the mechanism of action of Chitosan oligosaccharide in animals from the aspects of promoting animal growth performance, regulating lipid metabolism, improving antioxi?dant performance and immune performance, and to expound its application in poultry production, so as to provide reference for promoting the application of Chitosan oligosaccharide in poultry feed.

Abstract:Chitosan is derived from chitin polysaccharide, the main component of crustacean shells. Chitosan is a biocompatible, nontoxic, and biodegradable polymer soluble in acidic solutions. It is widely used in the medical and pharmaceutical fields. Antimicrobial activities of chitosan against different bacterial, fungal, and viral pathogens have been considered one of its attractive properties, making chitosan valuable for biological applications, including textile, food, tissue engineering, agriculture, and environmental protection. Additionally, chitosan has beneficial effects on livestock, poultry, fish, and crustaceans, which can enhance immunity, improve feed conversion, and promote growth. However, the water solubility of chitosan influences antimicrobial capabilities, limiting its application. In the present work, we reviewed the preparation, factors affecting antimicrobial activity, morphological structure, antimicrobial mechanism, and application of chitosan derivatives, and the problems and prospects were pointed out. Collectively, this review provided an update on the application of chitosan derivatives and their potential for further advanced applications in the antimicrobial field.

Abstract:Chitosan (CHT) is a natural substance widely used in veterinary medicine. However, the application of chitosan in animal production has severe shortcomings. This is because it is insoluble in pH ≥ 7 due to its very stable crystalline nature. This has stimulated its derivatization and depolymerization to low molecular weight chitosan. Low molecular weight chitosan (LMWCHT) has unique characteristics such as antibacterial activity and biodegradability, which make it sound for its use in animal nutrition, husbandry, and health. This review has provided sufficient evidence to demonstrate the usefulness of LWMCHT in animal nutrition, husbandry, and health. The review has also shown the benefit of LWMCHT in chemotherapy delivery. Further, the review has demonstrated the potential of LWMCHT as an alternative antibiotic in animal nutrition.

Abstract:Chitosan is a biodegradable natural polymer derived from the exoskeleton of crustaceans. Because of its biocompatibility and non-biotoxicity, chitosan is widely used in the fields of medicine and agriculture. With the latest technology and technological progress, different active functional groups can be connected by modification, surface modification, or other configurations with various physical, chemical, and biological properties. These changes can significantly expand the application range and efficacy of chitosan polymers. This paper reviews the different uses of chitosan, such as catheter bridging to repair nerve broken ends, making wound auxiliaries, as tissue engineering repair materials for bone or cartilage, or as carriers for a variety of drugs to expand the volume or slow-release and even show potential in the fight against COVID-19. In addition, it is also discussed that chitosan in agriculture can improve the growth of crops and can be used as an antioxidant coating because its natural antibacterial properties are used alone or in conjunction with a variety of endophytic bacteria and metal ions. Generally speaking, chitosan is a kind of polymer material with excellent development prospects in medicine and agriculture.

Abstract:Chitosan, a natural and abundant polysaccharide, offers several advantageous properties, such as excellent biocompatibility, biodegradability, and antimicrobial activity, making it a highly versatile material. However, its extensive application is hindered by its insolubility in water and most organic solvents, due to numerous intramolecular/intermolecular hydrogen bonds. To overcome this limitation and optimize its benefits, chitosan is often chemically modified to enhances its utility in various industries. Biomedical materials, environmental management, biological papermaking, food preservation, and the daily chemical industry are a few examples. Modified chitosan retains the inherent properties of chitosan and acquires new physicochemical characteristics as a result of introduced functional groups. Hydrophilic modifications typically include carboxylation, phosphorylation, and quaternary ammonium modification reactions. The specific properties and applications of chitosan derivatives depend on the grafted groups. This review summarizes the reaction conditions, properties, and applications of hydrophilic chitosan derivatives in drug delivery and food preservation, serving as a reference for the development and use of chitosan-based biomaterials. Bibliography includes 128 references.

Abstract:As one of the most abundant natural polysaccharides that possess good biological activity, chitosan is extracted from chitin. Its application in the food field is being increasingly valued. However, chitosan extraction is difficult, and its poor solubility limits its application. At present, the extraction methods include the acid-base method, new chemical methods, and biological methods. The extraction rates of chitin/chitosan are 4-55%, 13-14%, and 15-28%, respectively. Different chemical modifications have different effects on chitosan, making it applicable in different fields. This article reviews and compares the extraction and chemical modification methods of chitosan, emphasizing the importance of green extraction methods. Finally, the application prospects of chitosan in the food industry are discussed. This will promote the understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of different extraction methods for chitosan as well as the relationship between modification and application, providing valuable insights for the future development of chitosan.

Abstract:Chitosan, which is derived from chitin, is the only known natural alkaline cationic polymer. Chitosan is a biological material that can significantly improve the living standard of the country. It has excellent properties such as good biodegradability, biocompatibility, and cell affinity, and has excellent biological activities such as antibacterial, antioxidant, and hemostasis. In recent years, the demand has increased significantly in many fields and has huge application potential. Due to the poor water solubility of chitosan, its wide application is limited. However, chemical modification of the chitosan matrix structure can improve its solubility and biological activity, thereby expanding its application range. The review covers the period from 1996 to 2022 and was elaborated by searching Google Scholar, PubMed, Elsevier, ACS publications, MDPI, Web of Science, Springer, and other databases. The various chemical modification methods of chitosan and its main activities and application research progress were reviewed. In general, the modification of chitosan and the application of its derivatives have had great progress, such as various reactions, optimization of conditions, new synthetic routes, and synthesis of various novel multifunctional chitosan derivatives. The chemical properties of modified chitosan are usually better than those of unmodified chitosan, so chitosan derivatives have been widely used and have more promising prospects. This paper aims to explore the latest progress in chitosan chemical modification technologies and analyze the application of chitosan and its derivatives in various fields, including pharmaceuticals and textiles, thus providing a basis for further development and utilization of chitosan.

Abstract:Chitosan is a partially deacetylated polymer obtained from the alkaline deacetylation of chitin which is a glucose-based unbranched polysaccharide widely distributed in nature as the principal component of exoskeletons of crustaceans and insects as well as of cell walls of some bacteria and fungi. Chitosan exhibits a variety of physicochemical and biological properties resulting in numerous applications in fields such as waste and water treatment, agriculture, fabric and textiles, cosmetics, nutritional enhancement, and food processing. In addition to its lack of toxicity and allergenicity, and its biocompatibility, biodegradability and bioactivity make it a very attractive substance for diverse applications as a biomaterial in pharmaceutical and medical fields, where it has been used for systemic and local delivery of drugs and vaccines. It also has bioactive properties in its own right. This paper reviews current veterinary applications for chitosan including wound healing, bone regeneration, analgesic and antimicrobial effects. It also discusses the potential application of chitosan to drug and vaccine delivery in veterinary species. Given the restrictions imposed by financial and animal restraint considerations, especially in farming applications, the veterinary drug delivery areas most likely to benefit from chitosan are the delivery of chemotherapeutics such as antibiotics, antiparasitics, anaesthetics, painkillers and growth promotants to mucosal epithelium for absorption for local or systemic activity, and the delivery of immunomodulatory agents to the mucosal associated lymphoid tissue for induction or modulation of local immune responses. The properties of chitosan expected to enhance these functions are discussed, and the future research directions in this field are indicated.

Abstract:Superabsorbent hydrogels (SHs) have been used in many fields in recent years. Also chitosan-based superabsorbent hydrogels have attracted great attention because of the excellent properties of chitosan such as biocompatibility, biodegradability and antibacterial properties. This review focuses on the recent progress in chitosan-based superabsorbent hydrogels, providing a brief overview of the preparation approaches, the effects of preparation conditions on the structures and water absorbency performance, chitosan-based composite hydrogels comprised of inorganic fillers, other natural polymers as well as their derivatives, and promising applications for biomedical and personal hygiene, agriculture and water treatment.

Abstract:Chitosan is a biodegradable natural polymer with many advantages such as nontoxicity, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. It can be applied in many fields, especially in medicine. As a delivery carrier, it has great potential and cannot be compared with other polymers. Chitosan is extremely difficult to solubilize in water, but it can be solubilized in acidic solution. Its insolubility in water is a major limitation for its use in medical applications. Chitosan derivatives can be obtained by chemical modification using such techniques as acylation, alkylation, sulfation, hydroxylation, quaternization, esterification, graft copolymerization, and etherification. Modified chitosan has chemical properties superior to unmodified chitosan. For example, nanoparticles produced from chitosan derivatives can be used to deliver drugs due to their stability and biocompatibility. This review mainly focuses on the properties of chitosan, chitosan derivatives, and the origin of chitosan-based nanoparticles. In addition, applications of chitosan-based nanoparticles in drug delivery, vaccine delivery, antimicrobial applications, and callus and tissue regeneration are also presented. In summary, nanoparticles based on chitosan have great potential for research and development of new nano vaccines and nano drugs in the future.

Abstract:Chitosan is a natural and renewable polysaccharide that can form biopolymers. It is derived from the deacetylation of chitin mainly from crustaceans' shells, but also from fungi and insects. Thanks to unique characteristics such as antimicrobial effects, antioxidant properties or film forming capacities, it has triggered an important amount of research in the last decade about possible applications in industrial fields. The main application field of chitosan is the food industry where it can be used for preservation purposes and shelf-life improvement for fresh food products such as fruits or meat. For beverages, it is used for clarification and fining as well as elimination of spoilage flora in beverages like fruit juices or wine. And in agriculture, it can be used as a plant protection product through different mechanisms like the elicitation of plant defences. The mechanisms of action of chitosan on microorganisms are multiple and complex but revolve mostly around the disturbance of microorganisms' membranes and cell walls resulting in the leakage of cell material. The use of chitosan is still minor but is promising in finding environmentally friendly alternatives to synthetic chemicals and plastics. Therefore, its characterization is primordial for the future of sustainable production and preservation processes.

Abstract:Chitin is a linear polysaccharide of N-acetylglucosamine, which is highly abundant in nature and mainly produced by marine crustaceans. Chitosan is obtained by hydrolytic deacetylation. Both polysaccharides are renewable resources, simply and cost-effectively extracted from waste material of fish industry, mainly crab and shrimp shells. Research over the past five decades has revealed that chitosan, in particular, possesses unique and useful characteristics such as chemical versatility, polyelectrolyte properties, gel- and film-forming ability, high adsorption capacity, antimicrobial and antioxidative properties, low toxicity, and biocompatibility and biodegradability features. A plethora of chemical chitosan derivatives have been synthesized yielding improved materials with suggested or effective applications in water treatment, biosensor engineering, agriculture, food processing and storage, textile additives, cosmetics fabrication, and in veterinary and human medicine. The number of studies in this research field has exploded particularly during the last two decades. Here, we review recent advances in utilizing chitosan and chitosan derivatives in different technical, agricultural, and biomedical fields.

Abstract:Chitosan, derived from the deacetylation of chitin, is an abundant natural biopolymer on earth. Chitosan and its derivatives have become promising biological materials because of their unique molecular structure and excellent biological activities. The reactive functional groups of chitosan such as the amino and hydroxyl groups play a crucial role in facilitating the synthesis of three-dimensional hydrogel. Chitosan-based hydrogels have been widely used in medical, pharmaceutical, and environmental fields for years. Nowadays, chitosan-based hydrogels have been found in a wide range of applications in the food industry such as food sensors, dye adsorbents and nutrient carriers. In this review, recently developed methods for the preparation of chitosan-based hydrogels were given, and the biological activities of chitosan-based hydrogels were systematically introduced. Additionally, the recent progress in food sensors, packaging, dye adsorbents, and nutrient carriers was discussed. Finally, the challenges and prospects for the future development of chitosan-based hydrogels were discussed.

Because it is a biocompatible polymer with low toxicity and can be biodegradable in vivo, chitosan with its derivatives is one of the ideal materials for drug controlled release systems to enhance the efficacy and reliability of TCM drug therapy. On the other hand, chitosan, the only natural alkalic polysaccharid, also has several therapeutic effects such as anti-bacteria, antipyrotic and ulcer healing. Chitosan and its derivatives wide application prosperity in pharmaceutical industry of Chinese medicine.

Abstract:For many years, chitosan has been widely regarded as a promising eco-friendly polymer thanks to its renewability, biocompatibility, biodegradability, non-toxicity, and ease of modification, giving it enormous potential for future development. As a cationic polysaccharide, chitosan exhibits specific physicochemical, biological, and mechanical properties that depend on factors such as its molecular weight and degree of deacetylation. Recently, there has been renewed interest surrounding chitosan derivatives and chitosan-based nanocomposites. This heightened attention is driven by the pursuit of enhancing efficiency and expanding the spectrum of chitosan applications. Chitosan’s adaptability and unique properties make it a game-changer, promising significant contributions to industries ranging from healthcare to environmental remediation. This review presents an up-to-date overview of chitosan production sources and extraction methods, focusing on chitosan’s physicochemical properties, including molecular weight, degree of deacetylation and solubility, as well as its antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant activities. In addition, we highlight the advantages of chitosan derivatives and biopolymer modification methods, with recent advances in the preparation of chitosan-based nanocomposites. Finally, the versatile applications of chitosan, whether in its native state, derived or incorporated into nanocomposites in various fields, such as the food industry, agriculture, the cosmetics industry, the pharmaceutical industry, medicine, and wastewater treatment, were discussed.

Abstract:Chitosan is a biopolymer obtained from chitin, one of the most abundant and renewable materials on Earth. Chitin is a primary component of cell walls in fungi, the exoskeletons of arthropods such as crustaceans, e.g., crabs, lobsters and shrimps, and insects, the radulae of molluscs, cephalopod beaks, and the scales of fish and lissamphibians. The discovery of chitin in 1811 is attributed to Henri Braconnot while the history of chitosan dates back to 1859 with the work of Charles Rouget. The name of chitosan was, however, introduced in 1894 by Felix Hoppe-Seyler. Chitosan has attracted major scientific and industrial interests from the late 1970s due to its particular macromolecular structure, biocompatibility, biodegradability and other intrinsic functional properties. Chitosan and derivatives have practical applications in the food industry, agriculture, pharmacy, medicine, cosmetology, textile and paper industries, and in chemistry. In recent years, chitosan has also received much attention in dentistry, ophthalmology, biomedicine and bioimaging, hygiene and personal care, veterinary medicine, packaging industry, agrochemistry, aquaculture, functional textiles and cosmetotextiles, catalysis, chromatography, beverage industry, photography, wastewater treatment and sludge dewatering, and biotechnology. Nutraceuticals and cosmeceuticals are actually growing markets, and therapeutic and biomedical products should be the next markets in the development of chitosan. Chitosan is also the object of numerous fundamental studies. In this review, we highlight a selection of works on chitosan applications published over the past two decades.
