Abstract:Both nucleation and growth competition behavior involving competing phases in the undercooled hypoperitectic Ti47Al53 alloy were systematically explored by undercooling technique, with an effort to make the nonequilibrium peritectic reaction mechanism clear. The alloy was cyclically superheated in a containerless electromagnetic levitation apparatus to arrive at the supercooling state. The maximum undercooling of the melt was up to 250 K, and two critical undercoolings, ΔT1 (36 K) and ΔT2 (120 K), for the formation of various primary phases (β, α and γ) were determined by microstructural analysis. Due to different crystalline structural types between the primary and secondary phases, clear fault ribbons from β to α phase (or α to γ phase) were detected on the boundary layer between primary and secondary phases, showing that the secondary phase separates directly from the undercooled peritectic alloy melt. The reason for the formation of fault on the phase transformation layer was given in a view of atomic rearrangement process. According to the calculation of the transient nucleation theory, the formation of primary phases was completely controlled by the nucleation process in the nonequilibrium peritectic reaction. While in the subsequent growth process, the formation of secondary phase could be explained by the growth competition among the equilibrium and metastable phases as predicted by the dendrite growth BCT model.
