Abstract:Applying flux and cyclic superheat techniques, the peritectic Fe-Ni alloys (with a composition of Fe-4.33%Ni, mole fraction) were undercooled. A maximum undercooling reached 310 K was achieved. On this basis, combining experimental and theoretical analyses, the competitions incorporation in solidification of undercooled peritectic Fe-Ni melts were systematically elucidated. Based on experimental investigations and theoretical calculations in terms of classical nucleation theory and current dendrite growth theory, the phase competition mechanism between delta phase and gamma phase during the rapid solidification process was studied. The results indicate that such a competition between delta phase and gamma phase is controlled by the competitive nucleation mechanism. Owing to the favored thermodynamics and kinetics of nucleation, delta phase can always act as the primary phase. After primary recalescence, during the slow solidification process, the post-recalescence time with respect to pure delta phase solidification is believed to play a dominant role in the competition between acceleration and suppression of the peritectic reaction: L+delta ->gamma. The peritectic reaction is found to be suppressed after a critical undercooling (Delta T*approximate to 130 K), which can be ascribed to a longer incubation time for occurrence of the peritectic reaction in comparison with a time needing for the completion of the pure delta phase solidification during post-recalescence period, when Delta T(undercooling)>Delta T*.
