Abstract:A novel self-adaptive current mode sorter is presented. It has a simple structure with a complexity of O(N) and a large dynamic range. No-biasing signal is needed. It performs well even at large input currents. HSPICE simulation shows that this sorter has high precision, high resolution and low power.

Abstract:An improved high-resolution current-mode sorter is presented.Its structure complexity is O(N),which is crucial to the expansion of its size,and its dynamic range is large.Only one clock signal and one reset signal are needed.No biasing signal is required.The operation point is constructed according to the input current,so it is self-adaptive,which is very important for an all-purpose component.In average value circuit,subtraction circuit,Winner-Take-All(WTA) circuit and control circuit,it has good performance even at a large input current.This sorter has high precision,high resolution and low power,as has been proved via HSPICE simulation.It can be implemented in the standard digital CMOS technology and widely used in many fields,so it is of great value in applications.

Abstract:An improved CMOS current-mode sorter with high-resolution that does not need any biasing signal to simplify the system design is presented. It also has a simply circuit structure to expand its scale. By using average value circuit, subtraction circuit, WTA circuit and control circuit, it keeps good performance even with large input currents. A prototype is successfully fabricated in a 0.8 μm CMOS process. The die area is 2.38 mm × 2.00 mm (the core area is only 1.12 mm×0.52 mm). The measured results show that the proposed sorter has a large dynamic range, high resolution, good precision and low power. It could be widely used in median filtering, pattern recognition, neural network, fuzzy logic, etc.
New Technique: A Low Drift Current Reference Based on PMOS Temperature Correction Technology.

Abstract:A low drift current reference based on PMOS temperature correction technology is proposed. To achieve the minimum temperature coefficient (TC), the PMOS cascode current mirror is designed as a cross structure. By exchanging the bias for two layers of the self-biased PMOS cascode structure, the upper PMOS, which is used to adjust the TC together with the resistor of the self-biased PMOS cascode structure, is forced to work in the linear region. As the proposed current reference is the on-chip current reference of a high voltage LED driver with high accuracy, it was designed using a CSMC 1 μm 40 V BCD process. Simulation shows that the TC of the reference current was only 23.8×10 −6 /°C over the temperature range of −40–120 °C under the typical condition.

Abstract:Current limiters configuration has received considerable attention in recent years.The defects of existing mathematical models and algorithms around this topic are analyzed,and a multi-objective configuration methodology is proposed.The innovations of this methodology include two aspects:firstly,presenting a rigor mathematical definition of the optimization problem considering the total cost of current limiters,the amplitude of short-circuit current,as well as system transient stability;secondly,providing a modified parallel non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-Ⅱ(PNSGA-Ⅱ)to search the Pareto optimal solutions,which achieves a strong global optimization ability and an excellent convergence speed.

Abstract:Bioimpedance is a noninvasive measurement method that facilitates body composition analysis, besides being indicative of many other health parameters. In this work a novel programmable, low complexity, high output impedance, high voltage compliance and wideband current source for bioimpedance applications is presented. Previously, we designed, fabricated and tested in vivo a bio-patch for acquisition of multiple bio-signals [1]. Upon integration with our previous work, this circuit is envisioned to constitute part of a personalized health assistant. Simulation at worst case corners and real operation conditions was carried out using UMC-180 nm 1 poly 6 metal CMOS process. Full duty cycle, shortened or stepped square waves can be generated. Amplitude control of 8 different current levels is supported. Frequency can be tuned up to 1 MHz and an output impedance of 2.8 MO @ 250 KHz is achieved at full current capacity. Total current consumption is comparable to the injected current, making the circuit highly efficient.

Abstract:A current source converter array designed for superconducting magnetic energy storage system was investigated. This array is controlled by modulation-signal phase-shifting SPWM method. The DC side current of each converter module of the converter array can balance automatically at the unity power factor, but unbalanced seriously with the decrease of input power factor. In addition, the DC side current unbalancing causes higher distortion of the AC input current. Swapping of the gating signal of each converter module in same row is introduced to average the DC side currents. The harmonics of the AC currents is reduced while the DC side currents are balanced. 2x2 array and 2x4 array are studied in the experiments.

Abstract:As an important component of current-mode signal processing circuit, a new continuous-time CMOS current comparator with high speed and low power is proposed. It comprises one CMOS complementary amplifier with a feedback MOS resistor. two resistive-load amplifiers and two CMOS inverters. Its features include short response delay, low power consumption and small area. Because of the absence of bias currents and voltages, this circuit is also robust to process deviations. Transient HSPICE simulation result with 1.2 mum CMOS process verifies its superiority on speed/power ratio over other existing high-performance CMOS current comparators.

Abstract:A current mode sense amplifier which is proved to achieve low power and high speed is presented. Its sensing delay is independent of the bitline capacitances. It utilizes self-compensation circuit, hence improving the sensing speed and reliability of the existing sense amplifier. Simulation results based on the 1V/65nm CMOS process have verified the proposed design outperforms the original scheme in comparison by 32.4% in terms of speed and 6.5% in terms of power consumption.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel implementation of current-mode variable-frequency control. The system architecture features a dual-loop feedback and a unique structure with symmetric signal paths for voltage and current signals. The symmetric structure provides practical advantages for integrated controller design to achieve accurate Adaptive Voltage Positioning. The system dynamics is analyzed with the small-signal model. Design guide lines are derived for simple compensation circuits to achieve constant output impedance. With variable switching frequency, the system achieves good dynamic response without requiring high switching frequency at steady state. The system performance was verified by a two-channel interleaved controller chip implemented with CMOS technology.

Abstract:A novel current-sensing structure for current-mode DC-DC converter is presented in this paper. It has significant improvements on current-sensing speed and reducing the sensitivity to the variations of the process, voltage, temperature and loading (PVTL), which is derived in detail. It has been used in a current-mode DC-DC converter fabricated by CSMC 0.5μm CMOS process with a die size of 2.25 mm2. Experimental results show that with the current-sensing circuit the converter can operate at the supply voltage range of 2.7 to 5.5V with loading 0-600mA and has the ability to convert from 5.5V down to 0.6V at 4MHz. The measured transient response time is 7μs as the load current changes between 0 and 600mA rapidly. Moreover, the current-sensing structure can be also used in other integrated circuits for loop control and over-current protection.

Abstract:Current-mode Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) has drawn many attentions due to its high operating speed, power and ground noise immunity, and etc. However, 2(n) - 1 comparators are required in traditional n-bit current-mode ADC design, leading to inevitable high power consumption and large chip area. In this work, we propose a low power and compact current mode Multi-Threshold Comparator (MTC) based on giant Spin Hall E.ect (SHE). The two threshold currents of the proposed SHE-MTC are 200 mu A and 250 mu A with 1ns switching time, respectively. The proposed current-mode hybrid spin-CMOS flash ADC based on SHE-MTC reduces the number of comparators almost by half (2(n-1)), thus correspondingly reducing the required current mirror branches, total power consumption and chip area. Moreover, due to the non-volatility of SHE-MTC, the front-end analog circuits can be switched o. when it is not required to further increase power efficiency. The device dynamics of SHE-MTC is simulated using a numerical device model based on Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation with Spin-Transfer Torque (STT) term and SHE term. The device-circuit co-simulation in SPICE (45nm CMOS technology) have shown that the average power dissipation of proposed ADC is 1.9mW, operating at 500MS/s with 1.2V power supply. The INL and DNL are in the range of 0.23LSB and 0.32LSB, respectively.

Abstract:A new current-mode sense amplifier is presented. It utilizes the positive feedback scheme to enhance stability and enlarge the voltage swing of bit-lines. Comparing with the referenced sense amplifier, the new structure could work in large scale circuits correctly and efficiently. And the average power consumption and area are reduced. Extensive simulations, based on 65-nm CMOS technology, have verified the new design outperforms references for highly loaded bit-lines. These advantage of the proposed structure make it a wise choice for nanometer large-scale circuit where stability and power consumption are of major concerns.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate an ultrasensitive integrated photonic current sensor that incorporates a silicon-based single-mode-multimode-single-mode waveguide (SMSW) structure. This kind of SMSW structure is placed over a direct current carrying power resistor, which produces Joule’s heat to change the temperature of the SMSW and further results in the change of the effective refractive index between different propagating modes. Interference occurs when the modes recombine at the second single mode waveguide. Finally, the current variation is measured by monitoring the shift in the output spectrum of the multimode interferometer. In low current, the wavelength shift has almost linear dependence: Δλ∝Ic. This effect can be used as a current sensor with a slope efficiency of 4.24 nm/A in the range of 0–200 mA.

Abstract:A current-mode dc-dc converter with an on-chip current sensor is presented in this letter. The current sensor has significant improvement on the current-sensing speed. The sensing ratio of the current sensor has low sensitivity to the variation of the process, voltage, temperature and loading. The current sensor combines the sensed inductor current signal with the compensation ramp signal and the output of the error amplifier smoothly. The settling time of the current sensor is less than 10 ns. In the current-mode dc-dc converter application, the differential output of the current sensor can be directly sent to the pulse-width modulation comparator. With the proposed current sensor, the dc-dc converter could realize a low duty cycle with a high switching frequency. The dc-dc converter has been fabricated by CSMC 0.5-mu m 5-V CMOS process with a die size of 2.25 mm(2). Experimental results show that the current-mode converter can achieve a duty cycle down to 0.11 with a switching frequency up to 4 MHz. The measured transient response time is less than 6 mu s as the load current changes between 50 and 600 mA, rapidly.

Abstract:The Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) is particularly attractive for medium and high power applications such as High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) systems. In order to reach a high voltage, the number of cascaded submodules (SMs) is generally very large. Thus, in the applications with hundreds or even thousands of SMs such as MMC-HVDCs, the sorting algorithm of the conventional voltage balancing strategy is extremely slow. This complicates the controller design and increases the hardware cost tremendously. This paper presents a Two-Way Merge Sort (TWMS) strategy based on the prediction of the capacitor voltages under ideal conditions. It also proposes an innovative Insertion Sort Correction for the TWMS (ISC-TWMS) to solve issues in practical engineering under non-ideal conditions. The proposed sorting methods are combined with the features of the MMC-HVDC control strategy, which significantly accelerates the sorting process and reduces the implementation efforts. In comparison with the commonly used quicksort algorithm, it saves at least two-thirds of the sorting execution time in one arm with 100 SMs, and saves more with a higher number of SMs. A 501-level MMC-HVDC simulation model in PSCAD/EMTDC has been built to verify the validity of the proposed strategies. The fast speed and high efficiency of the algorithms are demonstrated by experiments with a DSP controller (TMS320F28335).

Abstract:A high-performance current sensing circuit with full-phase sampling capability is presented in this paper, which is suitable for DC-DC converters, motor driver circuits, and other control systems requiring current sensing. The proposed structure comprises of three parts, which are level shift, phase identification, and signal rectification. No matter what the phase of the current is, the current sensing circuit in this paper can accurately obtain the current information. Based on a standard 0.35um BCD process, the proposed current sensing circuit has been validated at different temperature points and process corners. The results demonstrate that the circuit can sense full-phase currents within ±1.5% accuracy.

Abstract:The advantages and disadvantages of existing high-performance continuous-time CMOS current comparators are analyzed,and a novel CMOS current comparator is proposed.It comprises one CMOS complementary amplifier with negative resistance feedback,two resistive-load amplifiers and two CMOS inverters.Because the input and output resistance of the CMOS complementary amplifier decreases owing to the negative feedback resistor,the voltage swings are reduced,and the response time of the current comparator is short and the speed is fast.The power consumption of the current comparator has decreased by using the resistive-load amplifiers.Simulation results based on 1.2μm CMOS technology HSPICE model show the response time of the novel current comparator is comparable with those of the existing fastest CMOS current comparators,while its power consumption is the lowest,so its speed/power ratio is the best.Furthermore,due to the simple circuit structure of the novel current comparator and its perfect,performance of deviations,it is very suitable for the high-speed/low-power current-mode integrated circuits.

Abstract:A high linearity current mode multiplier/divider（CMM/D） with a wide dynamic range is presented.The proposed CMM/D is based on the voltage-current characteristic of the diode,thus wide dynamic range is achieved. In addition,high linearity is achieved because high accuracy current mirrors are adopted and the output current is insensitive to the temperature and device parameters of the fabrication process.Furthermore,no extra bias current for all input signals is required and thus power saving is realized.With proper selection of establishing the input terminal,the proposed circuit can perform as a multifunction circuit to be operated as a multiplier/divider,without changing its topology.The proposed circuit is implemented in a 0.25μm BCD process and the chip area is 0.26×0.24 mm~2.The simulation and measurement results show that the maximum static linearity error is±1.8%and the total harmonic distortion is 0.4%while the input current ranges from 0 to 200μA.

Abstract:Current mode theory and technology are advanced breakthroughs in analog integrated circuit design in modern electronics. Current mode theory enables design of super wide frequency band, super high speed analog switches by introducing circuit structures and principles. Simulation results are given for circuit performance. The paper describes the main characteristics of the circuit and discusses the critical design problems. The circuit can be used in a intergrated system as a basic unit.

Abstract:Precise and high-speed sorting of individual target cells from heterogeneous populations plays an imperative role in cell research. Although the conventional fluorescence-activated cell sorter (FACS) is capable of rapid and accurate cell sorting, it occupies a large volume of the instrument and inherently brings in aerosol generation as well as cross-contamination among samples. The sorting completed in a fully enclosed and disposable microfluidic chip has the potential to eliminate the above concerns. However, current microfluidic cell sorters are hindered by the high complexities of the fabrication procedure and the off-chip setup. In this paper, a spark-cavitation-bubble-based fluorescence-activated cell sorter is developed to perform fast and accurate sorting in a microfluidic chip. It features a simple structure and an easy operation. This microfluidic sorter comprises a positive electrode of platinum and a negative electrode of tungsten, which are placed on the side of the main channel. By applying a high-voltage discharge on the pair of electrodes, a single spark cavitation bubble is created to deflect the target particle into the downstream collection channel. The sorter has a short switching time of 150 μs and a long lifespan of more than 100 million workable actions. In addition, a novel control strategy is proposed to dynamically adjust the discharge time to stabilize the size of the cavitation bubble for continuous sorting. The dynamic control of continuously triggering the sorter, the optimal delay time between fluorescence detection and cell sorting, and a theoretical model to predict the ideal sorting recovery and purity are studied to improve and evaluate the sorter performance. The experiments demonstrate that the sorting rate of target particles achieves 1200 eps, the total analysis throughput is up to 10,000 eps, the particles sorted at 4000 eps exhibit a purity greater than 80% and a recovery rate greater than 90%, and the sorting effect on the viability of HeLa cells is negligible.
