Abstract:Lightning protection of urban power grids is critical to the safe and stable use of electricity in cities. In the paper, the electromagnetic transient program (EMTP) was used to simulate the lightning protection of a 220kV substation reconstruction project with long cable inlet wire. Using the intersection method, the maximum value of the lightning invasion overvoltage on the substation equipment was calculated when the overhead incoming line connected to the cable was struck by lightning. The internal and external insulation levels of the substation equipment were checked. The simulation results show that the overvoltage exceeds the insulation level of the substation equipment without the arrester installed next to transformer, so it is necessary to install the arrester on the transformer side. The research results can be used as reference for engineering design.

Abstract:A unified specification to design and operate the stability control device in smart substation has not been formed yet, which has greatly affected the promotion and application of stability control device in smart substation. Thus, referring to the technical specifications of protection device and combining to the specificity of stability control device, a full and detailed configuration scheme is proposed to meet the requirement, including the device configuration principle, the access configuration of SV and GOOSE for variable primary connection types, the virtual terminal and soft switch. This solution is beneficial to standardize the R&D of stability control device in smart substation, and to facilitate on-site debugging, operation and maintenance.

Abstract:An analysis is made of the GOOSE technology on the IEC 61850 standard, the hardware structure and software logic of the protection device based on the requirements on reliability and rapidity of protective relaying, the operation and maintenance, and the engineering design. This paper mainly studies and resolves such critical problems regarding the application of GOOSE technology of protective relaying as the structure of network in a digitalized substation, the application of the intelligent breaker and switch, the manipulation of GOOSE messages, isolated measurement for IED operation and maintenance, and the configuration and project design method. The scheme for the application of GOOSE technology to protective relaying has been effectively implemented in a certain project. © 2009 State Grid Electric Power Research Institute Press.

Abstract:The communication mode and architecture-based on IEC 61850 is the development tendency of substation automation and it is also the base of digital substation in future.This paper introduces the design scheme of 220kV substation relay protection for application of IEC 61850,which adopts a mode to combine the normal primary equipments with IED according to IEC61850 specification.It studies the design scheme of digital substation and the compatible mode of conventional substation.The paper also analyzes the instantiation of GOOSE application.It has reference meaning for understanding the development tendency of substation automation and studying how to apply IEC 61850 in practical engineering.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the voltage level and network topology for DC distribution network. According to the typical network topology, the protection technology problems faced by the DC distribution network are analyzed. On this basis, the protection scheme of the DC distribution network is given to realize the fast fault identification. Aiming at the difficulty of fault location of DC distribution network, a network protection based on GOOSE is proposed. The system is divided into several areas. Each branch in each area adopts the networking mode to activate the GOOSE signal (with direction) and sent to the network; The active bay in each area receives the fault starting GOOSE signals of all the bays in the area through the GOOSE network, according to the branch status information to realize accurate fault location identification of the DC distribution network. Finally, the performance of the protection device was verified by experiments.

Abstract:The lightning intruding waves in 220 kV GIS substation model was built by using ATP-EMTP software, calculate the lightning over-voltages on electric equipment in substation with different running modes, different grounding resistance and lightning shielding failure. The results show that the maximum over-voltage on electric equipment happened in single bus with single transformer; The smaller the grounding resistance, the smaller the over-voltage value on electric equipment in substation; the lightning shielding failure will not cause harm to substation. Finally, this paper used statistical methods to calculate the years of the safe operation of the substation. It is concluded that the safe running times of substation can meet the requirement when arresters were installed at the incoming lines and the entrance of transformer.

Abstract:Based on post-innovation control and protection strategies for ±500 kV DC power transmission project from Tianshengqiao to Guangdong,the overvoltages of neutral-bus under various fault conditions are researched and the overvoltage processes under different fault conditions are divided into several stages for the detailed analysis,and the overvoltage mechanism as well as the current direction during various stages are expounded.Research results show that the energy flowing through neutral-bus arrester due to the grounding faults respectively occurred at outgoing line of valve side of converter transformer and that occurred at outgoing line of rectifier bridge cannot be controlled by the control and protection system,so the neutral-bus arrester has to exist enough adequate energy capability;the energy flowing through neutral-bus arrester due to the break fault occurred in DC system can be reduced while the time-delay of protection action is shortened.

Abstract:Firstly,the theories and some main protection methods of lightning-caused breaking of covered conductors in 10kV distribution networks are introduced.Then,detailed simulation research is done on the protection performance of surge protection device.The results indicate that surge protection devices should be installed between every other tower to get good protection performance.For overall protection,every tower needs to be installed with a surge protection device.

Abstract:The very fast transient overvoltage(VFTO) of the ultra-high voltage GIS system may pose the threats to the GIS main insulation and the main transformer.The southeastern Shanxi ultra-high GIS substation prospective time model of the connection mode of a 3/2 circuit breaker was built with the EMTP simulation software.The possible maximum VFTO produced by switching the main transformer,outgoing line and bus line was calculated.The possible maximum VFTO produced by switching the main transformer was estimated to reach 2.51 p.u.,which will cause severe damages to the main insulation and interturn insulation of the GIS.However,the VFTO produced by transferring outgoing line and bus line will not cause any damage.The measures of following the normal operating sequences and completely eliminating the VFTO produced by transferring the main bus for the 3/2 circuit breaker were indicated.For the ultra-high voltage substation,the disconnector should be separated after separating the high and low circuit breakers in the two sides of the main transformer.For the large-scale power plant,it was suggested to install the generator circuit breaker(GCB) and separate the GCB and the circuit breaker in the high-voltage side of the main transformer followed by separating the disconnector.By these measures,the VFTO produced by operating the main transformers in ultra-high voltage substation and large-scale power plant can be eliminated completely,ensuring the safety of the main insulation of the GIS ontology and the interturn insulation of the main transformer.
Research on transient overvoltage for converter station of Zhoushan multi-terminal VSC-HVDC project

Abstract:Zhoushan multi-terminal VSC-HVDC project will be the first DC transmission project with five converter stations in the world which is based on modular multilevel converter (MMC) technology. To study the overvoltage of each converter station, overvoltage mechanism of AC and DC switchyard are analyzed in detail based on this project, and overvoltage levels in typical faults such as single-phase-to-ground fault at the valve side of converter transformer and at the valve side of converter reactor, DC pole line ground fault, ground fault at the valve side of DC smoothing reactor and DC to DC pole line fault are calculated based on the MMC-HVDC model with five stations. Results show that the maximum overvoltage for AC bus at the valve side of converter transformer is 360 kV;the maximum overvoltage for DC bus at the line side and at the valve side of the DC smoothing reactor are 370 kV and 369 kV respectively; the maximum overvoltage of the neutral point of star reactance grounded branch and converter reactor are 188 kV and 235 kV respectively;the maximum energy of arrester CB and D are 1.258 MJ and 1.655 MJ respectively. The research results will provide important basis for the insulation coordination of station devices.

Abstract:Traditional unidirectional power systems that produce large-scale electricity and supply it using an ultra-high voltage power grid are changing globally to increase efficiency. Current substations' protection relays rely only on internal substation data, where they are located, to detect changes. However, to more accurately detect changes in the system, various data from several external substations, including micro-grids, are required. As such, communication technology regarding data acquisition has become an essential function for next-generation substations. Data aggregators that use the GOOSE protocol to collect data inside substations in real-time have been developed, but data acquisition from external substations is challenging in terms of cost and security, so only internal substation data are used. This paper proposes the acquisition of data from external substations by applying security to R-GOOSE, defined in the IEC 61850 standard, over a public internet network. This paper also develops a data aggregator based on R-GOOSE, showing data acquisition results.

Abstract:The authors introduce an approach to whole transformer substation protection and automation. It describes a local area network (LAN) technique which is especially suitable for power system automation. The LAN permits the interconnection of protection systems, fault recorders, and the host computer. The host computer coordinates the functioning of the equipment in the whole substation, passes any messages from protection relays or fault recorders to a remote control room. The control staff can interact through the host computer with any relay or recorder to effect a change or interrogate the equipment. The LAN uses BITBUS interconnection standards with an isolated dual-host computer with an advanced bus. The system can transmit at a rate of either 375 kbps or 62.5 kbps over a maximum distance (without repeater) of 1200 metres

Abstract:In GIS substations, operations of disconnectors may cause very fast transient overvoltage (VFTO) with high amplitude and steep wave front. Considering the narrower insulation margin of UHV GIS equipments and larger absolute magnitude of VFTO in UHV GIS systems, VFTO in UHV GIS systems could cause larger damage than those in EHV and lower ones. Therefore study on VFTO in UHV GIS systems is of great significance to choose more economical and more effective measures to prevent VFTO, in order to finally improve the safety and reliability of UHV GIS systems. In this paper, characteristics and hazards of VFTO in UHV GIS systems are analyzed by comparing it to that of EHV GIS systems. Comparison shows that the absolute value of VFTO in UHV GIS system is almost as twice as that of EHV GIS systems, but the insulation level of UHV GIS equipments is only 1.55 times as that of EHV ones, resulting in much more danger in the UHV GIS equipments. Then, several preventive measures are analyzed and summarized in this paper, by simulating Jindongnan UHV GIS substation based on EMTP. The maximum amplitude of VFTO with no suppressing measures is up to 2.72 p.u., dangerously exceeding the limit level of insulation, which is about 2.32 p.u. in UHV GIS systems. Analysis shows that installing proper shunt resistors in disconnectors is the most feasible and effective preventive measure at present. In spite of the lack of practical applications, ferromagnetic rings have great prospects of effectively suppressing VFTO. All possible switching sequences in Jindongnan UHV GIS substation are analyzed and simulated, among which the one that generates the severest VFTO is found out. Because the transformer of Jindongnan UHV GIS substation is connected to bus through overhead lines for long distance, the steepness of wave front is effectively reduced, thus VFTO will not threaten the transformer.

Abstract:In this study, a LCC-VSC hybrid HVDC transmission system was taken as an example. The valve and neutral overvoltage of the hybrid HVDC system were simulated and then calculated at the VSC converter station by installing a blocking diode and a DC circuit breaker, as well as by grounding after neutral bus outage. The isolation effect of the blocking diode and the DC circuit breaker on the VSC converter station in the protection and the effect on the DC overvoltage were compared, and the difference was analyzed by complying with the mechanism of overvoltage. The effect of different locations of the blocking diode on the overvoltage suppression was compared, and it was concluded that different locations of blocking diode could raise different requirements for the insulation coordination of the converter valve. By analyzing energy sources of the neutral bus overvoltage at different stages, it was further concluded that the energy stored in the distributed inductance of the metal return line could be a vital source of neutral bus overvoltage energy. On that basis, an overvoltage suppression strategy for grounding neutral bus directly after the stop of the converter station was proposed.

Abstract:This paper puts forward a distributed automation scheme with grounding protection for 10kV aerial wire, which is based on the outgoing line and feeder circuit breaker in substation, the intelligent column circuit breaker and the intelligent load switch. Though the outgoing line and feeder circuit breaker in substation, the intelligent column circuit breaker and the load switch cooperating with each other, Which could isolate and exclude the aerial wire transient fault automatically, and isolate the permanent fault immediately. Practical application results show that the application of the scheme have reduced the hours of power failure, reduced maintenance time and improved the stability of the system.

Abstract:With the enlargement of the power grid, the setting and cooperation of traditional backup protection become more difficult. Based on advanced communication network and computer technology, a new substation backup protection configuration using substation area information is introduced in this paper. The structure and function of protection configuration is detailed expatiated at first, and the fault location process based on direction, overcurrent and distance is analyzed. According to the fault location, the tripping sequence of local protection and breaker failure protection, which have a good adaptability to different main connection and operation modes, are discussed. The proposed protection system not only provides the local protection and breaker failure protection for all the equipments in the substation but also shortens the operation time and avoids the complicated cooperation.
