Abstract:The increase of solid wastes exerted great pressure on the environment and even damaged human health. Given this, the resource utilization of solid wastes became an inevitable trend of the industrial development. However, many researchers recognized that solid wastes with the component of Fe2O3, SiO2, Al2O3, TiO2, etc., could be utilized as the low-cost materials for preparing NH3-SCR catalysts, which could solve both the accumulation of solid wastes and the emission of NO x in industrial processes. Herein, some typical solid wastes, such as blast furnace slag (BFS), red mud (RM), coal fly ash (CFA), Fenton sludge (FS), etc., were extensively studied for their potential in NH3-SCR catalysts. Although the presence of some harmful components in solid wastes led to catalysts deactivation, they could still be excellent supports applied on NH3-SCR catalysts after proper pretreatment. In fact, these catalyst supports derived from solid wastes provided larger specific surface areas, thereby enhancing the NH3 adsorption and redox capacity and facilitating the active ingredients loaded uniformly. Meanwhile, some useful impurities in solid wastes might also facilitate the NH3-SCR performance, achieving denitrification efficiency comparable to other catalysts made from costly materials. Moreover, most of these NH3-SCR catalysts performed significant SO2 and/or H2O tolerance via metal oxides-doping, which would expand their potential for practical application in industry. Finally, the prospects for the application of solid wastes in NH3-SCR catalysts were also proposed.

Abstract:With the rapid increase of new energy industry, the shortage of critical metals for new energy industry, such as Ni, Co, V, and Pt, has received global attention. The hazardous spent catalysts from traditional energy industry contain a series of critical metals, which should be safe disposal and even value-added utilized. However, the recovery of critical metals from these valuable wastes has not been well accepted. In this review, the characteristics and recycling necessity of spent catalysts are described in the start section, and then the current progress on stepwise recycling techniques of three typical spent catalysts are summarized, which are petroleum refining hydrogenation catalysts, platinum group metals catalysts and selective catalytic reduction catalysts. The regeneration and value-added utilization examples of these catalysts have been discussed and prospected. An overview of the advantage and disadvantage features of these techniques is presented, associating with the environmental assessment. At the end of the paper, the evolutions of metal elements and species of the recycling process are emphasized for rational designs and considerations from the mechanism of molecular level. The further perspective on the more practical value-added utilization is highlighted. This review set up a closed-loop conversion bridge from traditional energy wastes to new energy materials.

Spent SCR Catalysts and Environmental Management in Typical Coal-fired Power Plant

Abstract:Objective To propose counter measures for composition analysis, output estimation and disposal methods of spent SCR catalysts. Methods Inductive coupled plasma emission spectrometer (ICP) was used to analyze chemical component of large amount of SCR catalyst generated in spent SCR catalysts. A mathematical model was used to estimate the amount of waste SCR produced, and the reasons for the inclusion of spent SCR catalyst in the hazardous waste lists was given on this ba-sis. Results On the basis of coal-fired power plant installed capacity, from the year of 2017, large amount of spent SCR catalyst solid waste will come in China, and the amount will increase year by year. It will reach 25×104~30×104m3per year after 2020. Ti was the highest content in the spent SCR catalyst, accounting for 23.3%~46.2%. Wolfram (W), vanadium (V), molybdenum(Mo) and barium (Ba) were active components in catalyst. And the ratio of different element was different in different catalysts. The content of vanadium had great influence on the potential determination of spent SCR catalyst. At the same time, the SCR catalyst might adsorb arsenic (As), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd) and other heavy metals, which would increase the chemical composition of the spent SCR catalyst. According to relecant provisions in National Hazardous Waste List, the spent SCR cata-lysts could not be ruled out from hazardous characteristics, no treatment or improper treatment might have adverse effect on human body and environment. On this basis, it is suggested to put the spent SCR catalysts into the hazardous waste list. Conclu-sion The spent SCR catalyst is a new kind of hazardous waste which has been present in China and will be long existed. There is no sufficient experience on its treatment. It is needed to explore the feasible monitoring and management measures of spent SCR catalysts, and finally implement effective supervision over the spent SCR catalysts for the aim of beautiful China of "Blue sky, green land and clear water".

Abstract:Low-temperature SCR denitrifying process can avoid the problem such as blocking and abrasion thus which often happen in medium temperature,abatement of K,Na,Ca and As elements pollution and poison,lowering the operating cost. A review and research progress of various kinds of low-temperature denitrifying catalysts were presented.The article comprehensively expounded the affecting factors for the low-temperature activation,such as formed different oxide phases,preparation method,carrier modification and internal structure of calalysts; then it was focused on analyzing the mechanism of poisoned low-temperature SCR catalysts and the way to improve anti-poisoning. on one hand,the dual effect of SO2 was attributed to the sulfur compounds that might be generated with the active components of the catalytic surface. H2O inhabits the catalytic activity,which might be attributed to competitive adsorption of H2O and reactant. on the other hand,the modification of catalyst active composition and improvement on preparation method could improve anti-SO2 performance; Finally,the research and development orientation of low-temperature de-nitrification SCR technologies were proposed.

Abstract:A large amount of spent selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst is generated annually. The spent SCR catalyst is poisoned by arsenic and alkaline metals. These spent catalysts also contain substantial amounts of heavy metals and are therefore considered as hazardous solid waste. In order to decontaminate the catalysts from As, K and Na poisoning, recover the valuable metals (V and W) and regenerate the catalysts, an efficient and green advanced oxidation process (AOPs) named oxidative ammonium bicarbonate leaching (OABL) at moderate temperature and ambient pressure was developed. The effect of the leaching parameters on the V, W, As, Na, K and Ti leaching efficiencies was investigated. The mechanisms of V5+ and W6+ species extraction process were investigated. Furthermore, the mechanism of extraction of the low valent As3+ was studied by ESR and a V4+ triggered Fenton-like reaction was proposed. The crystal structure of the catalyst substrate anatase (TiO2) was not affected by the leaching process. After impregnation with active components, the activity of the regenerated SCR catalyst was close to the level of the fresh catalyst with an NO conversion of 91% at 400 degrees C. Therefore, this work has introduced a new method for efficient regeneration of the spent catalyst.

Abstract:Catalyst is the core of SCR de-NOx technology,to decrease the deactivation rate and prolong catalyst life has significant meanings on decreasing the operation cost of SCR system.This paper has described the phenomenon of catalyst deactivation,given all the influence factors of deactivation,specialized effects of alkaline metal,alkaline-earth metal,As,P,Pb and HCl on SCR catalyst,and based on the effects,deactivation mechanism is discussed.The conclusions are that alkaline metal could decrease the quantity of Bronsted acid sites and change surface acidity of Bronsted active sites,alkaline-earth metal could block the pore structure of the catalyst,deactivation of arsenic is caused by accumulation of gaseous arsenic compounds,and phosphorus has obvious effects on catalyst active sites.Aimed at specific deactivation mechanisms,we can optimize catalyst performance to decrease the deactivation rate.

Abstract:Used commercial SCR catalysts (30000 hours) obtained from a 660 MW coal-fired plant in Zhejiang Province (China) were examined by SEM, BET, NH3-TPD, XRF and XPS to investigate their deactivated and regeneration mechanisms. Fresh commercial SCR catalysts were chosen for comparison. The results indicate that depositions containing salts of alkali metals (K and Na) and compounds of arsenic and ammonium sulfate block pores of the catalyst, which decreases its BET surface. Moreover, the acidity of the SCR catalysts decreases due to the reaction of metal ions with activated acidic sites on the SCR catalyst surface. After catalyst regeneration with 0.5 mol.L-1 dilute sulphuric acid, the activity of denitration increases from 42.62% to 78.30% at 350℃. Regeneration by pickling can effectively remove alkali metals from the surface of the catalysts, which also has certain effects in the removal of arsenic and ammonium sulfate. In addition, the augment of acidity and the increase of chemical adsorption oxygen proportion were examined after pickling, which are found beneficial to increase activity of deactivated commercial SCR catalysts for denitration.

Abstract:An environmental friendly electrochemical detoxification and recovery process is developed for the spent SCR catalysts disposal under alkaline condition. It is revealed that the spent V2O5-WO3/TiO2 catalyst is severely aggregated and poisoned by arsenic compounds. In this study, the efficient removal of arsenic is achieved by the electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs) at surface-modified carbon felt cathode, where the HO2− and highly oxidative OH are in-situ generated from two-electron ORR and electro-Fenton-like reaction, respectively. The mechanism of electrochemical arsenic extraction is systematically illustrated by employing the ESR measurements, and vanadium species induced electro-Fenton-like reaction is proposed. After electro-oxidative dissolution, the crystal structure and original composition of the catalyst support (TiO2 and WO3) are well maintained for recycle or subsequently re-fabrication process. After dipping active component on the detoxified catalyst, the regenerated catalyst shows a comparable SCR catalytic activity with the fresh sample. The present electrochemical strategy provides a promising approach for the spent catalysts utilization and further understanding for the in-situ generated reactive oxygen species in alkaline media.

Abstract:Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology is widely used in flue gas denitrification of coal-fired power plants because of its high efficiency of denitrification,low running cost and no secondary pollution.The catalyst was the core of SCR technology,and the poisoning inactivation of SCR catalyst leaded to an increase amount of SCR catalyst spent,while alkali (earth) metal was the main factor causing SCR catalyst poisoning inactivation.The poisoning mechanism of SCR catalyst by alkali metal (K,Na) and alkaline earth metals (Ca,Mg) and the effect of the performance of the corresponding compounds on the catalyst in detail were summarized.At the same time,the effects of improving the anti-alkali (earth) metal poisoning of fresh catalyst and the modified regeneration of alkali metal poisoning catalyst were discussed,which could provide reference for prolonging the service life of SCR catalyst in order to reduce the generation of spent SCR catalyst.

Abstract:Deactivation and regeneration of SCR catalysts have caught wide attention.Based on a comprehensive literature review,deactivation mechanisms of traditional SCR catalysts by catalyst sintering,arsenic,calcium,alkali and so on were discussed.Based on the research on various deactivation mechanisms,the optimal design of SCR denitration system and measures of preventing catalyst deactivation can be performed according to the boiler characteristics,fuel characteristics,and fly ash components.It is of great significance for expanding catalyst lifetime and reducing the operation and maintenance cost of the system.

Abstract:The deactivation and regeneration of selective catalytic reduction catalysts which have been used for about 37,000 h in a coal power plant are studied. The formation of Al-2(SO4)(3), surface deposition of K, Mg and Ca are primary reasons for the deactivation of the studied Selective catalytic reduction catalysts. Other factors such as activated V valence alteration also contribute to the deactivation. Reactivation of used catalysts via environment-friendly and finance-feasibly approaches, that is, dilute acid or alkali solution washing, would be of great interest. Three regeneration pathways were studied in the present work, and dilute nitric acid or sodium hydroxide solution could remove most of the contaminants over the catalyst surface and partly recover the catalytic performance. Notably, the acid-alkali combination washing, namely, catalysts treated by dilute sodium hydroxide and nitric acid solutions orderly, was much more effective than single washing approach in recovering the activity, and NO conversion increased from 23.6% to 89.5% at 380 degrees C. The higher removal efficiency of contaminants, the lower dissolution of activated V, and promoting the formation of polymeric vanadate should be the main reason for recovery of the activity.

Abstract:A substantial quantity of waste selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalysts is produced as hazardous wastes owing to the ultra-low emission reform of coal-fired power plants. This study aims to propose a new method for large-scale harmless treatment of waste SCR catalysts for utilization during iron ore sintering process. The effects of adding waste SCR catalysts on green bed permeability, flame front propagation, mineral phase, microstructure, and sinter indexes were evaluated. Results showed that the addition of waste SCR catalysts decreased the concentrated distribution degree of granules and deteriorated green bed permeability, thereby leading to slower propagation of flame front and lower sintering bed temperature. Results of mineral phase and microstructural analysis revealed that less calcium ferrite and more skeletal hematite formed, and porosity decreased from 39.64% to 24.62% when the level of waste SCR catalysts added was increased from 0 to 10%. All sinter indexes, including flame front speed, productivity, yield, and tumbler index, decreased with the increase in the level of waste SCR catalysts added. A comprehensive index was adopted to systematically evaluate the influence of adding waste SCR catalysts. This index decreased from 100.0 to 2.9 as the level of waste SCR catalysts added was increased from 0 to 10%. Finally, the addition of 2% waste SCR catalysts is recommended to achieve high sinter quality.

Abstract:Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO x with NH3 is an effective technique to remove NO x from stationary sources, such as coal-fired power plant and industrial boilers. Some of elements in the fly ash deactivate the catalyst due to strong chemisorptions on the active sites. The poisons may act by simply blocking active sites or alter the adsorption behaviors of reactants and products by an electronic interaction. This review is mainly focused on the chemical poisoning on V2O5-based catalysts, environmental-benign catalysts and low temperature catalysts. Several common poisons including alkali/alkaline earth metals, SO2 and heavy metals etc. are referred and their poisoning mechanisms on catalysts are discussed. The regeneration methods of poisoned catalysts and the development of poison-resistance catalysts are also compared and analyzed. Finally, future research directions in developing poisoning resistance catalysts and facile efficient regeneration methods for SCR catalysts are proposed.

Abstract:China generates a large number of scrapped selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalysts in the fossil fuel combustion plants every year. As a result, there is a giant quantity of 5 x 10(5)t scrapped V2O5-WO3/TiO2 SCR catalyst annually worldwide, in which arsenic poisoning is a major cause of catalysts deactivation. In this study, a novel cleaner recovery process of alkaline-acid stepwise leaching was proposed for the high-arsenic scrapped SCR catalysts to achieve excellent arsenic removal and structural reforming. It is found that arsenic can be completely removed from 1.92% to below the detection limit, and the surface area of regenerated catalysts is restored to 31 m(2)/g (similar to that of commercial catalysts). In the subsequent pickling and regeneration, Na+ can be eliminated to obtain anatase-type TiO2 for further activity recovery. Besides, valuable elements (W, V) have been successfully recycled by leaching the As-containing solid waste with ammonium salt. After replenishing active components, regenerated catalyst exhibits comparable activity with the commercial fresh catalyst, offering a promising method for scrapped catalyst recovery and further understanding of cleaner produces for waste management.

Abstract:Increasing numbers of cement furnaces have applied selective catalytic reduction (SCR) units for advanced treatment of NO in the flue gas. However, the SCR catalysts may face various poisons, such as acidic, alkaline, and heavy metal species, in the fly ash. In this work, we studied the deactivation mechanisms of multipoisons (Ca, Pb, and S) on the CeO2-WO3/TiO2 catalyst, using the in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy method. Calcium promoted the conversion of Ce(III) to Ce(IV) and, thus, (i) suppressed the redox cycle, (ii) decreased the NO adsorption (monodentate NO3- and bridged NO2-), and (iii) enriched the Lewis acid sites. Pb(IV) blocked Ce2(WO4)3, aggravating the electronegativity of W6+, which inhibited (i) the binding stability of tungsten and ammonia species, (ii) bridged NO3- (bonded to tungsten), and (iii) the Brønsted acid sites. The multipoisoning processes enriched O2- by repairing partial surface oxygen defects, which suppressed O22- and O-. Sulfur occupied the surface base sites and formed PbSO4 after Ce2(WO4)3 was saturated.
