Abstract:The known theory on the one-side exact boundary controllability for first order quasilinear hyperbolic systems requires that the unknown variables are suitably coupled or satisfy the Group Property in boundary conditions at the non-control side(see[5],[10]). In this paper we illustrate, with an inspiring example, that the one-side exact boundary controllability can still be realized by means of a suitable coupling among the unknown variables in the quasilinear hyperbolic system itself instead of in boundary conditions.

Abstract:In this paper we establish the theory on the semiglobal classicalsolution to first order quasilinear hyperbolic systems with a kindof nonlocal boundary conditions, and based on this, thecorresponding exact boundary controllability and observability areobtained by a constructive method. Moreover, with the linearizedSaint-Venant system and the 1-D linear wave equation as examples, weshow that the number of both boundary controls and boundaryobservations can not be reduced, and consequently, we conclude thatthe exact boundary controllability for a hyperbolic system in anetwork with loop can not be realized generically.

Abstract:Based on the theory of the local exact boundary controllability for first order quasilinear hyperbolic systems, using an extension method, the authors establish the exact controllability in a shorter time by means of internal controls acting on suitable domains. In particular, under certain special but reasonable hypotheses, the exact controllability can be realized only by internal controls, and the control time can be arbitrarily small.

Abstract:We consider first order quasilinear hyperbolic systems with vertical characteristics. It was shown in [4] that such systems can be exactly controllable with the help of internal controls applied to the equations corresponding to zero eigenvalues. However, it is possible that, for physical or engineering reasons, we can not put any control on the equations corresponding to zero eigenvalues. In this paper, we will establish the exact controllability only by means of physically meaningful internal controls applied to the equations corresponding to non-zero eigenvalues. We also show the exact controllability for a very simplified model by means of switching controls.

Abstract:In this paper, by a new constructive method, the authors reprove the global exact boundary controllability of a class of quasilinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws with linearly degenerate characteristics. It is shown that the system with nonlinear boundary conditions is globally exactly boundary controllable in the class of piecewise C-1 functions. In particular, the authors give the optimal control time of the system. Finally, a new example belonging to this kind of system is also provided.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the exact controllability and exact synchronization in L 2 space for a 1-D first order linear hyperbolic system with internal controls located on some part of the domain. Based on the exact boundary controllability theory, we first use the constructive method to establish the exact controllability by internal controls for a time reversible system with inhomogeneous boundary conditions. The method is then adapted to prove the exact internal null controllability for a general system with homogeneous boundary conditions. These results can be then used to establish the exact internal synchronization for the system, and related subjects are further studied.

Abstract:For 1-D linear hyperbolic systems with constant coefficients we introduce the asymptotic controllability and the asymptotic zero controllability in L-2 space under the lack of boundary controls and show the duality that they are equivalent, respectively, to the strong observability and the weak observability for the dual system. An example of 4 x 4 system with only one control is shown to be asymptotically controllable but not exactly controllable.

Abstract:This paper considers the problem of exact controllability of linear control systems with compact semigroup in non-reflexive state spaces and control spaces. The weak convergence of bounded sequence of control functions with respect to the subspace of the dual space is studied and a lemma for the weak convergence is proved. Based on the lemma and the strong separation theorem, a necessary and sufficient condition for exact controllability of compact semigroups with respect to the space consisting all essentially bounded measurable functions is obtained. An example of heat equation is presented to illustrate the utility of the result. Some related problems remaining for further study are addressed.

This paper deals with exact boundary controllability, when this is not the case. Some important models are also shown as applications of the main result. Abstract:This paper deals with the global exact controllability for first-order quasilinear hyperbolic systems of diagonal form with linearly degenerate characteristics. When the system has no zero characteristics, we establish the global exact boundary controllability from one arbitrarily preassigned C1 data to another by means of a constructive method, in which the desired boundary controls can be acted either on both sides or only on one side. Sharp estimates on the exact controllable time are given in both cases. When the system has some zero characteristics, the global exact controllability is also established.
