Abstract:In this paper we establish the theory on the semiglobal classicalsolution to first order quasilinear hyperbolic systems with a kindof nonlocal boundary conditions, and based on this, thecorresponding exact boundary controllability and observability areobtained by a constructive method. Moreover, with the linearizedSaint-Venant system and the 1-D linear wave equation as examples, weshow that the number of both boundary controls and boundaryobservations can not be reduced, and consequently, we conclude thatthe exact boundary controllability for a hyperbolic system in anetwork with loop can not be realized generically.

Abstract:In this paper, by a new constructive method, the authors reprove the global exact boundary controllability of a class of quasilinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws with linearly degenerate characteristics. It is shown that the system with nonlinear boundary conditions is globally exactly boundary controllable in the class of piecewise C-1 functions. In particular, the authors give the optimal control time of the system. Finally, a new example belonging to this kind of system is also provided.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the problem about the simultaneous realization of exact boundary controllability of final state and nodal profile for general 1-D first order quasilinear hyperbolic systems. We show that by means of boundary controls, the system (hyperbolic equations together with boundary conditions) can drive any given initial data at to any given final data at , and the solution to the system fits exactly any given nodal profile on a boundary node or an internal node for certain subinterval of [0, T ]. Moreover, we give an application of the main results to the system of traffic flow.

Abstract:The known theory on the one-side exact boundary controllability for first order quasilinear hyperbolic systems requires that the unknown variables are suitably coupled or satisfy the Group Property in boundary conditions at the non-control side(see[5],[10]). In this paper we illustrate, with an inspiring example, that the one-side exact boundary controllability can still be realized by means of a suitable coupling among the unknown variables in the quasilinear hyperbolic system itself instead of in boundary conditions.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the asymptotic stability of the exact boundary controllability of nodal profile for quasilinear hyperbolic systems. We will prove that if the nodal profile and the given boundary function possess an exponential or polynomial decaying property, then the boundary control function and the solution to the corresponding mixed initial-boundary value problem will possess the same decaying property.

Abstract:The general theory on exact boundary controllability for general first order quasilinear hyperbolic systems requires that the characteristic speeds of the system do not vanish. This paper deals with exact boundary controllability, when this is not the case. Some important models are also shown as applications of the main result. The strategy uses the return method, which allows one in certain situations to recover nonzero characteristic speeds.

Abstract:We consider first order quasilinear hyperbolic systems with vertical characteristics. It was shown in [4] that such systems can be exactly controllable with the help of internal controls applied to the equations corresponding to zero eigenvalues. However, it is possible that, for physical or engineering reasons, we can not put any control on the equations corresponding to zero eigenvalues. In this paper, we will establish the exact controllability only by means of physically meaningful internal controls applied to the equations corresponding to non-zero eigenvalues. We also show the exact controllability for a very simplified model by means of switching controls.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the exact boundary controllability of nodal profile for nonautonomous quasilinear hyperbolic systems on a finite time interval and obtain that there is the exact boundary controllability of nodal profile for any given initial time so long as the controllability time is suitably large, but T depends on in general. As applications, we discuss the exact boundary controllability of nodal profile for the Saint-Venant system with a nonuniform subcritical steady state and the system of traffic flow depending on time.
