Abstract:In this paper, we consider the exact boundary controllability of nodal profile for nonautonomous quasilinear hyperbolic systems on a finite time interval and obtain that there is the exact boundary controllability of nodal profile for any given initial time so long as the controllability time is suitably large, but T depends on in general. As applications, we discuss the exact boundary controllability of nodal profile for the Saint-Venant system with a nonuniform subcritical steady state and the system of traffic flow depending on time.

Abstract:Based on the theory of the local exact boundary controllability for first order quasilinear hyperbolic systems, using an extension method, the authors establish the exact controllability in a shorter time by means of internal controls acting on suitable domains. In particular, under certain special but reasonable hypotheses, the exact controllability can be realized only by internal controls, and the control time can be arbitrarily small.

Abstract:The known theory on the one-side exact boundary controllability for first order quasilinear hyperbolic systems requires that the unknown variables are suitably coupled or satisfy the Group Property in boundary conditions at the non-control side(see[5],[10]). In this paper we illustrate, with an inspiring example, that the one-side exact boundary controllability can still be realized by means of a suitable coupling among the unknown variables in the quasilinear hyperbolic system itself instead of in boundary conditions.

Abstract:We consider first order quasilinear hyperbolic systems with vertical characteristics. It was shown in [4] that such systems can be exactly controllable with the help of internal controls applied to the equations corresponding to zero eigenvalues. However, it is possible that, for physical or engineering reasons, we can not put any control on the equations corresponding to zero eigenvalues. In this paper, we will establish the exact controllability only by means of physically meaningful internal controls applied to the equations corresponding to non-zero eigenvalues. We also show the exact controllability for a very simplified model by means of switching controls.

Abstract:In this paper, by a new constructive method, the authors reprove the global exact boundary controllability of a class of quasilinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws with linearly degenerate characteristics. It is shown that the system with nonlinear boundary conditions is globally exactly boundary controllable in the class of piecewise C-1 functions. In particular, the authors give the optimal control time of the system. Finally, a new example belonging to this kind of system is also provided.

Abstract:Despite of the fact that distributed ( internal) controls are usually used to obtain controllability for a hyperbolic system with vanishing characteristic speeds, this paper is, however, devoted to study the case where only boundary controls are considered. We first prove that the system is not (null) controllable in finite time. Next, we give a sufficient and necessary condition for the asymptotic stabilization of the system under a natural feedback.

Abstract:For 1-D linear hyperbolic systems with constant coefficients we introduce the asymptotic controllability and the asymptotic zero controllability in L-2 space under the lack of boundary controls and show the duality that they are equivalent, respectively, to the strong observability and the weak observability for the dual system. An example of 4 x 4 system with only one control is shown to be asymptotically controllable but not exactly controllable.

Abstract:This paper considers the problem of exact controllability of linear control systems with compact semigroup in non-reflexive state spaces and control spaces. The weak convergence of bounded sequence of control functions with respect to the subspace of the dual space is studied and a lemma for the weak convergence is proved. Based on the lemma and the strong separation theorem, a necessary and sufficient condition for exact controllability of compact semigroups with respect to the space consisting all essentially bounded measurable functions is obtained. An example of heat equation is presented to illustrate the utility of the result. Some related problems remaining for further study are addressed.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the local exact boundary controllability of entropy solutions to a class linearly degenerate hyperbolic systems of conservation laws with constant multiplicity. The authors prove the two-sided boundary controllability, one-sided boundary controllability and two-sided controllability with less controls, by applying the strategy used originally for classical solutions with essential modifications. Our constructive method is based on the well-posedness of semi-global solutions constructed by the limit of $ e $-approximate front tracking solutions to the mixed initial-boundary value problem with general nonlinear boundary conditions and some further properties on both $ e $-approximate front tracking solutions and entropy solutions.
