Abstract:A series of hexadecylphosphate acid (HDPA) terminated mixed-oxide nanoparticles have been investigated to catalyze the oxidation of toluene exclusive to benzaldehyde under mild conditions in an emulsion of toluene/water with the catalysts as stabilizers. With the HDPA-Fe2O3/Al2O3 as the basic catalyst, a series of transition metals, such as Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Cr, Mo, V, and Ti, was respectively doped to the basic catalyst to modify the performance of the catalytic system, in expectation of influencing the mobility of the lattice oxygen species in the oxide catalysts. Under normally working conditions of the catalytic system, the nanoparticles of catalysts located themselves at the interface between the oil and water phases, constituting the Pickering emulsion. Both the doped iron oxide and its surface adsorbed hexadecylphosphate molecules were essential to the catalytic system for excellent performances with high toluene conversions as well as the exclusive selectivity to benzaldehyde. Under optimal conditions, ∼83% of toluene conversion and >99% selectivity to benzaldehyde were obtained, using molecular oxygen as oxidant and HDPA-(Fe2O3-NiO)/Al2O3 as the catalyst. This process is green and low cost to produce high quality benzaldehyde from O2 oxidation of toluene.

Abstract:The completely selective oxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde with dioxygen, without the need to use H2O2, halogens, or any radical initiators, is a reaction long desired but never previously success-ful. Here, we demonstrate the enzyme-like mechanism of the reaction over hexadecylphosphate acid (HDPA)-bonded nano-oxides, which appear to interact with toluene through specific recogni-tion. The active sites of the catalyst are related to the ability of HDPA to change its bonding to the oxides between monodentate and bidentate during the reaction cycle. This greatly enhances the mobility of the crystal oxygen or the reactivity of the catalyst, specifically in toluene transfor-mations. The catalytic cycle of the catalyst is similar to that of methane monooxygenase. In the presence of catalyst and through O2 oxidation, the conversion of toluene to benzaldehyde is initiated at 70 °C. We envision that this novel mechanism reveals alternatives for an attractive route to de-sign high-performance catalysts with bioinspired structures.

Abstract:Hydrothermally derived nanocubes of CeO2 (10 nm) were explored as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst in the partial oxidation of aromatic alcohols to the corresponding aldehydes and aerobic oxidation of p-nitrotoluene to p-nitrobenzoic acid. CeO2 nanocatalyst was characterized by XRD, TEM, EDS, XPS, BET, FT-IR, TGA and UV-vis spectroscopy. TEM/HRTEM micrographs reveals the morphology with mostly cubic shaped nanostructures with exposed highly active {100} and {110} facets. Surface area of nanoceria determined by BET and found to be 33.8 m2/g. To demonstrate the universality of the catalytic system, the selective oxidation of different substrates of benzylic alcohol and complete oxidation of p-Nitrotoluene was investigated under mild conditions. Absolute selectivity towards their respective aldehydes was found to be 99.50% (benzaldehyde), 90.18% (p-chlorobenzaldehyde), 99.71% (p-nitrobenzaldehyde), 98.10% (p-fluorobenzaldehyde), 94.66% (p-anisaldehyde) and 86.14% (cinnamaldehyde). Moreover, the catalytic oxidative transformation of nitrotoluene results 100% conversion with 99.29% selectivity towards nitrobenzoic acid.

Abstract:The structure and catalytic properties of ultrafine Mo-based oxide particles prepared by the sol–gel technique are studied by using XRD, TEM, TPR, FT-Raman, BET surface area measurement, and microreactor tests. It is shown that for partial oxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde, the ultrafine Fe2(MoO4)3 and Ce2(MoO4)3 particles exhibit higher benzaldehyde selectivity and toluene conversion than the corresponding larger oxide particles prepared by the conventional coprecipitation method. The unique catalytic properties of ultrafine Fe2(MoO4)3 and Ce2(MoO4)3 particles may be correlated to the higher mobility of lattice oxygen ions in the oxides and their higher BET surface area. For the ultrafine Mo-based oxides prepared by the sol–gel process, the selectivity to benzaldehyde follows the order Ce2(MoO4)3>Fe2(MoO4)3>La2(MoO4)3>MoO3, which is in good agreement with the reducibility of Mo ions and reactivity of lattice oxygen ions in the ultrafine Mo-based oxides. These results reveal that the lattice oxygen ions in the Mo-based oxides are the main active species for partial oxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde. The results of in situ LRS studies indicate that the terminal Mo=O bonds in Ce2(MoO4)3 are the main reactive species for partial oxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde.

Abstract:A series of Ce-Mo-P oxide catalysts with different Ce : Mo : P atomic ratio were prepared and applied to selective catalytic oxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde. The best catalytic activity result of 16. 1% benzaldehyde yield can be obtained with Ce : Mo : P=2 : 1 : 0. 2 sample when the measured temperature was 485°C, the air : toluene ratio was 10. Abstract:Catalytic oxidation of Chlorobenzene (CBz) was studied over V2O5/TiO2-CNTs nanocomposites prepared by sol-gel method. Physical and chemical properties were characterized by BET, XRD and XPS. The catalytic activity for CBz oxidation was improved with the addition of CNTs and the destruction efficiency of 94% could be obtained with the catalyst supported by CNTs which has tube diameter 20-30nm and -COOH group. The high catalytic performance could be attributed to the adsorption property of CNTs and the improvement of the catalysts.

Abstract:Efficient activation and oxidative transformation of C(sp3)-H into value-added compounds by O2 represents a sustainably synthetic pathway with high atomic economy and environmentally-friendly features. However, both C(sp3)-H and O2 must be activated effectively, and this may be difficult to achieve with a catalysts that contains only one type of active site. Herein, the dual-active sites of oxygen vacancy and cobalt species were constructed in the cobalt-doped nanorods of ceria for respective activation of O2 and C(sp3)-H, enabling an efficient oxidative toluene for subsequent Knoevenagel condensation with malononitrile to yield benzylidenemalononitrile under mild conditions. Extensive experiments and theoretical simulations revealed that the oxidation of C(sp3)-H in toluene to aldehyde intermediates was realized through the spillover of active oxygen species from oxygen vacancy to cobalt site owing to high capacity of oxygen mobility in the defective CeO2. Subsequently, the facile condensation with malononitrile on CeO2 was also promoted by the presence of cobalt site. This dual-active site process provides an alternative approach for the effective oxidation of C(sp3)-H by O2/air for consequent transformation.

Abstract:Vanadium oxide nanobelts were synthesized using a sonochemical-hydrothermal method. Hexadecylphosphonic acid (HDPA) was introduced onto the surfaces of the nanobelts and bulk vanadium oxide to tune their catalytic properties; these properties were tested using gas-phase oxidation of toluene. The catalytic activity of the vanadium oxide nanobelts was higher than that of the bulk oxide as a result of the higher lattice oxygen activity of the nanobelts. Doping with HDPA, tuning the lattice oxygen activity, and blocking unselective sites led to both higher activity and selectivities for benzaldehyde and benzoic acid on nanobelt-like vanadium oxides, whereas led to lower activity but higher selectivities for benzaldehyde and benzoic acid on bulk vanadium oxides.

Abstract:Catalysis of simple cobalt tetraphenylporphyrin for selective liquid phase oxidation of toluene with air is first reported. By the catalysis of simple cobalt tetraphenylporphyrin, the selective oxidation of toluene with air in the absence of any solvents or promoters will produce benzaldehyde and benzyl alcohol. Compared with the present synthetic method of benzaldehyde and benzyl alcohol by the chlorination of toluene followed by hydrolysis, which has been used in the world industry, the new method has the advantage of friendly environmental effects. The researchers found that the reaction time, temperature, air pressure, the amount of catalyst and the flow rates of air influenced the toluene conversion and the selectivity of benzaldehyde and benzyl alcohol. By the use of 3.2×10−5M cobalt tetraphenylporphyrin as catalyst, toluene oxidation with air under the optimum conditions of 160°C and 0.8MPa and 0.04m3/h airflow produced benzaldehyde and benzyl alcohol at 60% selectivity and 8.9% conversion of toluene. The mole turnover numbers of the catalyst was about 25,000. A possible mechanism is also suggested.

Abstract:Ceria is an excellent catalyst or support for various oxidation reactions due to its abundant oxygen vacancies and strong metal-support interactions. In this study, ceria nanocrystals were hydrothermally prepared with different morphologies (nanorods, nanocubes, and nano-octahedra) and corresponding exposed crystal facets [(110), (100), and (111)]. The Pd/CeO2 catalysts were synthesized through an impregnation method by applying these ceria nanocrystals as supports. Selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol, involving multiple catalytic steps, was employed as a model reaction to explore the crystal facet effect of ceria on the catalytic activity of various Pd/CeO2 catalysts. The Pd/CeO2 nanorod catalyst delivers superior performance in each individual step, resulting in an improved overall catalytic activity. Specifically, the highest oxygen vacancy concentration and the optimum metal-support synergy observed on the CeO2 (110) surface are feasible to dissociate the benzyl alcohol adsorbent, eliminate alpha-H, and activate O2. As a consequence, the Pd/CeO2-nanorod catalysts deliver a much higher benzyl alcohol conversion (74%) than Pd/CeO2-nano-octahedra (35%) and Pd/CeO2-nanocubes (28%). This work provides in-depth insight into the crystal facet-performance relationship of CeO2 in the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol and sheds light on the catalyst support design strategy for other multistep reactions.

Abstract:Iron-modified HZSM-5 materials were prepared by the impregnation techniques at ambient temperature and characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and ICP-MS to determine the phase structure and loadings of iron dioxide. This material was tested for solvent-free catalytic oxidation of toluene under mild conditions. The result shows that Fe2O3/HZSM-5 is an effective catalyst, exhibiting 17.3% conversion of toluene, 51.4% selectivity to benzaldehyde at 90°C. Furthermore, the catalyst can be easily recovered and reused for three times without a significant loss in its activity and selectivity.

Abstract:Reactive radicals are crucial for activating inert and low-polarity C(sp 3 )-H bonds for the fabrication of high value-added products. Herein, novel single-crystal oxygen-rich bismuth oxybromide nanosheets (Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 SCNs) with more than 85 % {10–1} facets exposure and oxygen defects were synthesized via a facile solvothermal route. The Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 SCNs demonstrated excellent photocatalytic performance in the selective oxidation of toluene under blue light. The yield of benzaldehyde was 1876.66 μmol g -1 h −1 , with a selectivity of approximately 90 %. Compared to that of polycrystalline Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 nanosheets (Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 PCNs), the activity of Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 SCNs exhibit a 21-fold increase. Experimental studies and density functional theory (DFT) calculations have demonstrated that the defect Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 (10–1) facets exhibits exceptional adsorption properties for O 2 molecules. In addition, the single-crystal structure in the presence of surface defects significantly increases the separation and transport of photogenerated carriers, resulting in the effective activation of adsorbed O 2 into superoxide radicals (•O 2 – ). Subsequently, the positively charged phenylmethyl H is readily linked to the negatively charged superoxide radical anion, thereby activating the CH bond. This study offers a fresh perspective and valuable insights into the development of efficient molecular oxygen-activated photocatalysts and their application in the selective catalytic conversion of aromatic C(sp 3 )-H bonds.

Abstract:A series of Ce-Mo oxide catalysts with different Ce/Mo atomic ratio were prepared and applied to selective oxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde. The structures and properties of the surfaces of catalysts were characterized by XRD, TPR and DR-UVS. The natures of oxygen species on the surfaces of these samples were studied by using temperature programmed desorption-mass spectrography (TPD-MS). The results showed that the oxygen species of multiple adsorption existed on the sample surface. And in the range of desorption temperature < 900 degrees C, for the Ce-Mo samples, not only the desorption peaks of O- species on surfaces of samples be discoved, but also the O2- - species appeared. As the content of Ce in Ce-Mo oxides was changed, the activation energy of oxygen desorption (E-d) also changed. The E-d value of sample 3 (Ce/Mo = 1/1) is the lowest and its selectivity of benzaldehyde in toluene oxidation is the highest. Thus, a parallel relation between the Ed value and the selectivity for benzaldehyde existed in these Ce-Mo oxides.
