Abstract:Symmetry and its breaking are basic scientific problems.Chiral symmetries are common in nature,for example,the macroscopic spiral arms of galaxies and the rotation of planets;the microscopic spirals of the mineral crystalline,the organic molecules and the elementary particles.The concept of chirality in atomic nuclei was first proposed in 1997.Since then many efforts have been made to understand chiral symmetry and its spontaneous breaking in atomic nuclei.Up to now,more than 30 candidates of chiral nuclei have been reported in the 80,100,130,and 190 mass regions.The concept of the chirality in atomic nuclei,the prediction,the signal,and the experimental verification of the chiral nuclei are briefly introduced;the recent theoretical and experimental progress are reviewed,in particular the existence of multiple chiral doublets (MxD),i.e.,more than one pair of chiral doublet bands in one single nucleus;the simultaneous spontaneous breaking of chiral and reflection symmetry in the newly observed atomic nuclei is introduced,together with a prospect on the future study on nuclear chiral symmetry.

Abstract:Progresses of the chirality in atomic nuclei are reviewed, in particular, the recently proposed collective Hamiltonian based on tilted axis cranking approach to describe chiral vibration and rotation modes, and the experimental achievements for chirality and multiple chiral doublets, i.e., in Ag-106, Ce-133, and Rh-103. The first experimental evidences of multiple chiral doublet bands with distinct and identical configuration found in Ce-133 and Rh-103 are discussed in detail.

Abstract:The significant progresses of the chirality in atomic nuclei are briefly reviewed for both experimental and theoretical sides. A particle rotor model is developed which couples several valence protons and neutrons to a rigid triaxial rotor core and applied to investigating the chirality in odd-A nucleus Nd-135. Static chirality has been shown to be a transient phenomenon surrounding by chiral vibrations. It is found that the B(M1) staggering is associated strongly with the characters of nuclear chirality, i.e., the staggering is weak in chiral vibration region while strong in the static chirality region.

Abstract:Static chiral symmetries are common in nature, for example, the macroscopic spirals of snail shells, the microscopic handedness of certain molecules, and human hands. The concept of chirality in atomic nuclei was first proposed in 1997, and since then many efforts have been made to understand chiral symmetry and its spontaneous breaking in atomic nuclei. Recent theoretical and experimental progress in the verification of chirality in atomic nuclei will be reviewed, together with a discussion of the problems that await to be solved in the future.

Abstract:Magnetic and chiral bands have been a hot subject for more than twenty years. Therefore, quite large volumes of experimental data as well as theoretical descriptions have been accumulated. Although some of the formalisms are not so easy to handle, the results agree impressively well with the data. The objective of this paper is to review the actual status of both experimental and theoretical investigations. Aiming at making this material accessible to a large variety of readers, including young students and researchers, I gave some details on the schematic models which are able to unveil the main features of chirality in nuclei. Also, since most formalisms use a rigid triaxial rotor for the nuclear system's core, I devoted some space to the semi-classical description of the rigid triaxial as well as of the tilted triaxial rotor. In order to answer the question whether the chiral phenomenon is spread over the whole nuclear chart and whether it is specific only to a certain type of nuclei, odd-odd, odd-even or even-even, the current results in the mass regions of $A\sim 60,80,100,130,180,200$ are briefly described for all kinds of odd/even-odd/even systems. The chiral geometry is a sufficient condition for a system of proton-particle, neutron-hole and a triaxial rotor to have the electromagnetic properties of chiral bands. In order to prove that such geometry is not unique for generating magnetic bands with chiral features, I presented a mechanism for a new type of chiral bands. One tries to underline the fact that this rapidly developing field is very successful in pushing forward nuclear structure studies.

The topics treated are the chiral bag model for nucleon structure resulting from large $N_c$ QCD, the pion cloud in chiral perturbation theory for low-energy electroweak nuclear response functions, ``swelled hadrons" in nuclear matter, chiral symmetry restoration in terms of the Georgi vector limit and pseudo-Goldstone meson condensation in nuclear medium.

Abstract:Based on the triaxial particle-rotor model (PRM), the chiral doublet bands with symmetric particle-hole configurations pig(9/2) circle times nug, pih(11/2) circle times nuh and asymmetric configurations pig circle times nuh(11/2) , pih circle times nui(13/2) have been investigat ed, including their rotation spectra, the relations between spin and rotational frequency, and the reduced B (E2), B (M1) transition probabilities. These configurations correspond to regions A similar to 100, A similar to 130 and A similar to 170 in nuclear chart respectively. It is observed that the larger angular momentum provided by the valence nucleons, the higher the spin corresponding to the appearance of the chiral doublet bands, and the broader their spin interval. The chiral bands based on asymmetric configurations exhibit quite similar properties as those on symmetric ones, and can be discovered in future in-beam gamma experiments.

Abstract:Open problems in the interpretation of the observed pair of near degenerate $\Delta I = 1$ bands with the same parity as the chiral doublet bands are discussed. The ambiguities for the existing fingerprints of the chirality in atomic nuclei and problems in existing theory are discussed, including the description of quantum tunneling in the mean field approximation as well as the deformation, core polarization and configuration of particle rotor model (PRM). Future developments of the theoretical approach are prospected.

Abstract:The chirality in soft triaxial nuclei is investigated for the first time with the time-dependent and tilted axis cranking covariant density functional theories on a three-dimensional space lattice in a microscopic and self-consistent way. Taking the puzzling chiral nucleus $^{106}$Ag as an example, the experimental energies of the observed nearly degenerate bands are well reproduced without any free parameters beyond the well-defined density functional. A novel chiral mode in soft triaxial nuclei is newly revealed from the microscopic dynamics of the total angular momentum. This opens a new research area for the study of chirality, particularly in relation to soft nuclear shapes.

Abstract:The criteria for chiral doublet bands based on one particle and one hole coupled to a triaxial rotor have been summarized. Candidate chiral doublet bands in A similar to 100 and 130 odd-odd nuclei were checked against these chiral criteria. Two representative cases, nearly degenerate Delta I = 1 doublet bands in (126)Cs and 106 Rh were investigated in the two quasiparticles coupled with a triaxial rotor model. After including the pairing correlation, good agreement has been obtained between the calculated results and the data available, which supports the interpretation of observed doublet bands as chiral bands.

Abstract:Prompt gamma-gamma-gamma coincidence studies of neutron-rich nuclei with A = 99-113, populated in the spontaneous fission of Cf-252, were carried out at Gammasphere. From a high statistics data set, new band structures and significant extension of previously known bands were observed in Y-99,Y-101, Nb-101,Nb-105, Tc-105,Tc-107,Tc-109, Rh-111,Rh-113. One quasi-particle plus triaxial rotor calculations were carried out. These nuclei show a smooth evolution from axial symmetry in Yb to maximum triaxiality in Rh. In Mo-106 and Ru-110, pairs of Delta I = 1 doublet bands are established to high spins. Since these nuclei exhibit evidence for triaxial shapes, their close energy differences for states of the same spins, their constant and equal moments of inertia with spin and their AI = 1 transitions all support their interpretation as chiral bands. Tilted axis cranking calculations likewise support their assignment as chiral bands but show they have a different composition than the chiral bands observed in odd-odd nuclei.

Abstract:The brief history for the prediction of the nuclear chirality is provided. The theoretical and experimental investigations of the nuclear chirality are reviewed, including the verification of chiral doublet bands, the chiral conundrum and its resolution, and the prediction and observation of the multiple chiral doublets (M$\chi$D). Some recent theoretical progresses are highlighted, including the chiral collective Hamiltonian, the A-plot and the K-plot, the nuclear chirality-parity (ChP) violation, the chiral rotation induced by the pairing correlations, as well as the chiral dynamics. The possibly emerging area, challenges that lie ahead, and opportunities for progress in the context of the nuclear chirality are discussed.

Abstract:A triaxial projected shell model including configurations with more than four quasiparticles in the configuration space is developed and applied to investigate the recently reported five chiral doublets candidates in a single even-even nucleus Nd-136. The energy spectra and transition probability ratios B(M1)/B(E2) are reproduced satisfactorily. The configuration mixing along the rotational bands is studied by analyzing the intrinsic composition of the eigenfunctions. The chiral geometry of these nearly degenerate bands is examined by the K plot and the azimuthal plot, and the evolution from the chiral vibration to the static chirality with spin is clearly demonstrated for four pairs of partner bands. For bands D3 and D3-C, due to strong configuration mixing, their azimuthal plots show features of planar rotation and it is difficult to interpret them as chiral partners.

Abstract:The criteria for chiral doublet bands obtained by assuming one proton (neutron) particle and one neutron (proton) hole sitting in a corresponding high-j shell coupled to a triaxial rotor with gamma = 30 degrees have been summarized. Two representative cases in A similar to 100 odd-odd nuclei, nearly degenerate Delta I = 1 doublet bands in Rh-104 and Rh-106 are checked against these chiral criteria. It is shown that Rh-106 possesses better chiral geometry than Rh-104, although the energy near degeneracy is achieved in Rh-104 in comparison with the constant energy separation of doublet bands in Rh-106.

Abstract:Color confinement and chiral symmetry specify some important territory for the study of hadronic physics. Any hadron can be defined as a color-singlet composite system of qurks and gluons, the fundamental fields of qcd, while the landscape of the hadronic spectrum is dominated by the fact that two quark flavors, u and d, are characterized by masses small compared to the fundamental scale of this theory. Measurements sensitive to the orbital angular momenta of the color constituents of the nucleon display the interplay of chiral dynamics and confinement in a unique manner. This pageant can be explored by an evaluation, within the context of the Georgi-Manohar chiral quark model, of the normalization of the orbital structure functions and the normalization of the Boer-Mulders functions for different quark flavors. The resolution structures in the chiral quark model represent an evaluation of Collins functions for a confined system defined by the quantum numbers of the nucleon in the constituent quark model. The orbital structure functions for antiquarks can also be specified within the basic framework of this approach while the normalization of the gluon orbital structure function requires some additional assumptions.

Abstract:The projected shell model with configuration mixing for nuclear chirality is developed and applied to the observed rotational bands in the chiral nucleus 130Cs. For the chiral bands, the energy spectra and electromagnetic transition probabilities are well reproduced. The chiral geometry illustrated in the K plot and the azimuthal plot is confirmed to be robust against the configuration mixing. The other rotational bands are also described in the same framework.

Abstract:Since the prediction of nuclear chirality in 1997, tremendous progresses both theoretically and experimentally have been achieved. Experimentally, 59 chiral doublet bands in 47 chiral nuclei (including 8 nuclei with multiple chiral doublets) have been reported in $A\sim80,~100,~130$,~and~190 mass regions. The spins, parities, energies, ratios of the magnetic dipole transition strengths to the electric quadrupole transition strengths, and related references for these nuclei are compiled and listed in Table 1. For these nuclei with the magnetic dipole transition strengths and the electric quadrupole transition strengths measured, the corresponding results are given in Table 2. A brief discussion is provided after the presentation of energy $E$, energy difference $\Delta E$, energy staggering parameter $S(I)$, rotational frequency $\omega$, kinematic moment of inertia $\mathcal{J}^{(1)}$, dynamic moment of inertia $\mathcal{J}^{(2)}$, and ratio of the magnetic dipole transition strength to the electric quadrupole transition strength $B(M1)/B(E2)$ versus spin $I$ in each mass region.
