Abstract:Progresses of the chirality in atomic nuclei are reviewed, in particular, the recently proposed collective Hamiltonian based on tilted axis cranking approach to describe chiral vibration and rotation modes, and the experimental achievements for chirality and multiple chiral doublets, i.e., in Ag-106, Ce-133, and Rh-103. The first experimental evidences of multiple chiral doublet bands with distinct and identical configuration found in Ce-133 and Rh-103 are discussed in detail.

Abstract:Static chiral symmetries are common in nature, for example, the macroscopic spirals of snail shells, the microscopic handedness of certain molecules, and human hands. The concept of chirality in atomic nuclei was first proposed in 1997, and since then many efforts have been made to understand chiral symmetry and its spontaneous breaking in atomic nuclei. Recent theoretical and experimental progress in the verification of chirality in atomic nuclei will be reviewed, together with a discussion of the problems that await to be solved in the future.

Abstract:Following the reports of two pairs of chiral doublet bands observed in Rh-105, the adiabatic and configuration-fixed constrained triaxial relativistic mean-field calculations are performed to investigate their triaxial deformations with the corresponding configuration and the possible multiple chiral doublet (M chi D) phenomenon. The existence of the M chi D phenomenon in Rh-105 is highly expected.

Abstract:The brief history for the prediction of the nuclear chirality is provided. The theoretical and experimental investigations of the nuclear chirality are reviewed, including the verification of chiral doublet bands, the chiral conundrum and its resolution, and the prediction and observation of the multiple chiral doublets (M$\chi$D). Some recent theoretical progresses are highlighted, including the chiral collective Hamiltonian, the A-plot and the K-plot, the nuclear chirality-parity (ChP) violation, the chiral rotation induced by the pairing correlations, as well as the chiral dynamics. The possibly emerging area, challenges that lie ahead, and opportunities for progress in the context of the nuclear chirality are discussed.

Abstract:Symmetry and its breaking are basic scientific problems.Chiral symmetries are common in nature,for example,the macroscopic spiral arms of galaxies and the rotation of planets;the microscopic spirals of the mineral crystalline,the organic molecules and the elementary particles.The concept of chirality in atomic nuclei was first proposed in 1997.Since then many efforts have been made to understand chiral symmetry and its spontaneous breaking in atomic nuclei.Up to now,more than 30 candidates of chiral nuclei have been reported in the 80,100,130,and 190 mass regions.The concept of the chirality in atomic nuclei,the prediction,the signal,and the experimental verification of the chiral nuclei are briefly introduced;the recent theoretical and experimental progress are reviewed,in particular the existence of multiple chiral doublets (MxD),i.e.,more than one pair of chiral doublet bands in one single nucleus;the simultaneous spontaneous breaking of chiral and reflection symmetry in the newly observed atomic nuclei is introduced,together with a prospect on the future study on nuclear chiral symmetry.

Abstract:Covariant density functional theory and three-dimensional tilted axis cranking are used to investigate multiple chirality in nuclear rotation for the first time in a fully self-consistent and microscopic way. Two distinct sets of chiral solutions with negative and positive parities, respectively, are found in the nucleus 106Rh. The negative-parity solutions reproduce well the corresponding experimental spectrum as well as the B(M1)/B(E2) ratios of the transition strengths. This indicates that a predicted positive-parity chiral band should also exist. Therefore, it provides a further strong hint that multiple chirality is realized in nuclei.

Abstract:By adopting the fully quantal triaxial particle-rotor model, the candidate chiral doublet bands in odd-A nuclei Rh-103 and Rh-105 with pg(-1) pi g(9/2)(-1) circle times nu h(11/2)(2)configuration are studied. For the doublet bands in both nuclei, agreement is excellent for the observed energies over the entire spin range and B(M1)/B(E2) at higher spin range. The evolution of the chiral geometry with angular momentum is discussed in detail by using the angular momentum components and their probability distributions. Chirality is found to change from chiral vibration to nearly static chirality at spin I = 37/2 and back to another type of chiral vibration at higher spin. The influence of the triaxial deformation gamma is also studied.

Abstract:Nuclear chirality is one of the hot topics in nuclear physics and has attracted great interests in the past decades. Studies on nuclear chirality in both experimental and theoretical sides have been carried out extensively. Among various theoretical investigations, the microscopic covariant density functional theory (CDFT) plays important roles. In this contribution, recent applications of the three-dimensional tilted axis cranking covariant density functional theory (3DTAC-CDFT) on nuclear chirality are reviewed. In particular, the multiple chirality in Rh-106 and the chiral conundrum in Ag-106 are discussed.

Two representative cases in A~100 odd–odd nuclei, nearly degenerate ΔI = 1 doublet bands in 104Rh and 106Rh, are checked against these chiral criteria. It is shown that 106Rh possesses better chiral geometry than 104Rh, although the energy near degeneracy is achieved in 104Rh in comparison with the constant energy separation of doublet bands in 106Rh.

Abstract:The possible chiral doublet structures in Rh-104 with the asymmetric configuration pig(9/2)(-1) circle times nuh(11/2) have been studied in the triaxial particle-rotor model. The spectra, the I - omega relations and the transition probabilities support the existence of the chiral bands in this nucleus. The gamma-deformation interval -35degrees less than or equal to gamma less than or equal to -25degrees for appearance of chiral doublets in Rh-104 is given. With appropriate moment of inertia and the configuration pig(9/2)(-1) circle times nuh(11/2), the experimental spectra in Rh-104, Rh-106, Rh-108, Ag-110 have been well reproduced by the yrast bands of the triaxial particle-rotor-model calculation.

Abstract:The significant progresses of the chirality in atomic nuclei are briefly reviewed for both experimental and theoretical sides. A particle rotor model is developed which couples several valence protons and neutrons to a rigid triaxial rotor core and applied to investigating the chirality in odd-A nucleus Nd-135. Static chirality has been shown to be a transient phenomenon surrounding by chiral vibrations. It is found that the B(M1) staggering is associated strongly with the characters of nuclear chirality, i.e., the staggering is weak in chiral vibration region while strong in the static chirality region.

Abstract:The configuration-fixed constrained triaxial relativistic mean-field approach is extended by including time-odd fields and applied to the study of the candidate multiple chiral doublets (M chi D) nucleus Rh-106. The energy contribution from time-odd fields and microscopical evaluation of center-of-mass correction as well as the modification of triaxial deformation parameters beta,gamma due to the time-odd fields are investigated. The contributions of the time-odd fields to the total energy are 0.1-0.3 MeV, and they modify slightly the beta,gamma values. However, the previously predicted multiple chiral doublets still exist..

Abstract:Three sets of chiral doublet band structures have been identified in the Rh-103 nucleus. The properties of the observed chiral doublet bands are in good agreement with theoretical results obtained using constrained covariant density functional theory and particle rotor model calculations. Two of them belong to an identical configuration and provide the first experimental evidence for a novel type of multiple chiral doublets, where an "excited" chiral doublet of a configuration is seen together with the "yrast" one. This observation shows that the chiral geometry in nuclei can be robust against the increase of the intrinsic excitation energy.

Abstract:The chirality in soft triaxial nuclei is investigated for the first time with the time-dependent and tilted axis cranking covariant density functional theories on a three-dimensional space lattice in a microscopic and self-consistent way. Taking the puzzling chiral nucleus $^{106}$Ag as an example, the experimental energies of the observed nearly degenerate bands are well reproduced without any free parameters beyond the well-defined density functional. A novel chiral mode in soft triaxial nuclei is newly revealed from the microscopic dynamics of the total angular momentum. This opens a new research area for the study of chirality, particularly in relation to soft nuclear shapes.

Abstract:Prompt gamma-gamma-gamma coincidence studies of neutron-rich nuclei with A = 99-113, populated in the spontaneous fission of Cf-252, were carried out at Gammasphere. From a high statistics data set, new band structures and significant extension of previously known bands were observed in Y-99,Y-101, Nb-101,Nb-105, Tc-105,Tc-107,Tc-109, Rh-111,Rh-113. One quasi-particle plus triaxial rotor calculations were carried out. These nuclei show a smooth evolution from axial symmetry in Yb to maximum triaxiality in Rh. In Mo-106 and Ru-110, pairs of Delta I = 1 doublet bands are established to high spins. Since these nuclei exhibit evidence for triaxial shapes, their close energy differences for states of the same spins, their constant and equal moments of inertia with spin and their AI = 1 transitions all support their interpretation as chiral bands. Tilted axis cranking calculations likewise support their assignment as chiral bands but show they have a different composition than the chiral bands observed in odd-odd nuclei.
