Abstract:Progresses of the chirality in atomic nuclei are reviewed, in particular, the recently proposed collective Hamiltonian based on tilted axis cranking approach to describe chiral vibration and rotation modes, and the experimental achievements for chirality and multiple chiral doublets, i.e., in Ag-106, Ce-133, and Rh-103. The first experimental evidences of multiple chiral doublet bands with distinct and identical configuration found in Ce-133 and Rh-103 are discussed in detail.

Abstract:Static chiral symmetries are common in nature, for example, the macroscopic spirals of snail shells, the microscopic handedness of certain molecules, and human hands. The concept of chirality in atomic nuclei was first proposed in 1997, and since then many efforts have been made to understand chiral symmetry and its spontaneous breaking in atomic nuclei. Recent theoretical and experimental progress in the verification of chirality in atomic nuclei will be reviewed, together with a discussion of the problems that await to be solved in the future.

Abstract:The dynamics of two-dimensional rigid circles filled with chiral active particles are investigated by employing the overdamped Langevin dynamics simulations. Unidirectional rotation of rigid circles is observed, and the rotational angular velocity (omega') relies mainly on the length (l), the number (n(B)), and tilt angle (gamma) of boards, and the angular velocity (omega) and area fraction (rho) of chiral active particles. There are optimum values for these parameters at which the average angular velocity of circle reaches its maximum. The center-of-mass mean square displacement for circles drops by about two orders of magnitude for large angular velocity omega of chiral active particles with oscillations in the short-time regime. Our work demonstrates that nanofabricated objects with suitable designs immersed in a bath of chiral active particles can extract and rectify energy in a unidirectional motion.

Abstract:Symmetry and its breaking are basic scientific problems.Chiral symmetries are common in nature,for example,the macroscopic spiral arms of galaxies and the rotation of planets;the microscopic spirals of the mineral crystalline,the organic molecules and the elementary particles.The concept of chirality in atomic nuclei was first proposed in 1997.Since then many efforts have been made to understand chiral symmetry and its spontaneous breaking in atomic nuclei.Up to now,more than 30 candidates of chiral nuclei have been reported in the 80,100,130,and 190 mass regions.The concept of the chirality in atomic nuclei,the prediction,the signal,and the experimental verification of the chiral nuclei are briefly introduced;the recent theoretical and experimental progress are reviewed,in particular the existence of multiple chiral doublets (MxD),i.e.,more than one pair of chiral doublet bands in one single nucleus;the simultaneous spontaneous breaking of chiral and reflection symmetry in the newly observed atomic nuclei is introduced,together with a prospect on the future study on nuclear chiral symmetry.

Abstract:Magnetic and chiral bands have been a hot subject for more than twenty years. Therefore, quite large volumes of experimental data as well as theoretical descriptions have been accumulated. Although some of the formalisms are not so easy to handle, the results agree impressively well with the data. The objective of this paper is to review the actual status of both experimental and theoretical investigations. Aiming at making this material accessible to a large variety of readers, including young students and researchers, I gave some details on the schematic models which are able to unveil the main features of chirality in nuclei. Also, since most formalisms use a rigid triaxial rotor for the nuclear system's core, I devoted some space to the semi-classical description of the rigid triaxial as well as of the tilted triaxial rotor. In order to answer the question whether the chiral phenomenon is spread over the whole nuclear chart and whether it is specific only to a certain type of nuclei, odd-odd, odd-even or even-even, the current results in the mass regions of $A\sim 60,80,100,130,180,200$ are briefly described for all kinds of odd/even-odd/even systems. The chiral geometry is a sufficient condition for a system of proton-particle, neutron-hole and a triaxial rotor to have the electromagnetic properties of chiral bands. In order to prove that such geometry is not unique for generating magnetic bands with chiral features, I presented a mechanism for a new type of chiral bands. One tries to underline the fact that this rapidly developing field is very successful in pushing forward nuclear structure studies.

Abstract:The chirality in soft triaxial nuclei is investigated for the first time with the time-dependent and tilted axis cranking covariant density functional theories on a three-dimensional space lattice in a microscopic and self-consistent way. Taking the puzzling chiral nucleus $^{106}$Ag as an example, the experimental energies of the observed nearly degenerate bands are well reproduced without any free parameters beyond the well-defined density functional. A novel chiral mode in soft triaxial nuclei is newly revealed from the microscopic dynamics of the total angular momentum. This opens a new research area for the study of chirality, particularly in relation to soft nuclear shapes.

A particle rotor model is developed which couples several valence protons and neutrons to a rigid triaxial rotor core and applied to investigating the chirality in odd-A nucleus Nd-135. Static chirality has been shown to be a transient phenomenon surrounding by chiral vibrations. It is found that the B(M1) staggering is associated strongly with the characters of nuclear chirality, i.e., the staggering is weak in chiral vibration region while strong in the static chirality region.
Prevailing Triaxial Shapes in Atomic Nuclei and a Quantum Theory of Rotation of Composite Objects

Abstract:In the traditional view, heavy deformed nuclei are like axially-symmetric prolate ellipsoids, rotating about one of the short axes. In the present picture, their shapes may be triaxial. The triaxial shape yields complex rotations, which actually well reproduce experimental data, as confirmed by state-of-the-art Configuration Interaction calculations. Two origins are suggested for the triaxiality: (i) binding-energy gain by the symmetry restoration for triaxial shapes, and (ii) another gain by specific components of the nuclear force, like tensor force and high-multipole (e.g. hexadecupole) central force. While the origin (i) produces basic modest triaxiality for virtually all deformed nuclei, the origin (ii) produces more prominent triaxiality for a certain class of nuclei. An example of the former is 154Sm, a typical showcase of axial symmetry but is now suggested to depict a modest yet finite triaxiality. The latter, prominent triaxiality, is discussed from various viewpoints for some exemplified nuclei including 166Er, and experimental findings. Many-body structures of the gamma band and the double-gamma band are clarified. Regarding the general features of rotational states of deformed many-body systems including triaxial ones, the well-known J(J+1) rule of rotational excitation energies is derived, within the quantum mechanical many-body theory, without resorting to the quantization of a rotating classical rigid body. This derivation is extended to finite K. The present picture of the rotation is robust and can be applied to various shapes or configurations, including clusters and molecules. Thus, two long-standing open problems, (i) occurrence and origins of triaxiality and (ii) quantum many-body derivation of rotational energy, are resolved. Their possible relations to Davydov's rigid-triaxial-rotor model are mentioned.

Abstract:Covariant density functional theory and three-dimensional tilted axis cranking are used to investigate multiple chirality in nuclear rotation for the first time in a fully self-consistent and microscopic way. Two distinct sets of chiral solutions with negative and positive parities, respectively, are found in the nucleus 106Rh. The negative-parity solutions reproduce well the corresponding experimental spectrum as well as the B(M1)/B(E2) ratios of the transition strengths. This indicates that a predicted positive-parity chiral band should also exist. Therefore, it provides a further strong hint that multiple chirality is realized in nuclei.

Abstract:By adopting the fully quantal triaxial particle-rotor model, the candidate chiral doublet bands in odd-A nuclei Rh-103 and Rh-105 with pg(-1) pi g(9/2)(-1) circle times nu h(11/2)(2)configuration are studied. For the doublet bands in both nuclei, agreement is excellent for the observed energies over the entire spin range and B(M1)/B(E2) at higher spin range. The evolution of the chiral geometry with angular momentum is discussed in detail by using the angular momentum components and their probability distributions. Abstract:The behavior of the collective rotor in the chiral motion of triaxially deformed nuclei is investigated using the particle rotor model by transforming the wave functions from the K representation to the R representation. The energy spectra of the doublet bands and their energy differences as functions of the triaxial deformation are first examined and then the angular momentum components of the rotor, proton, neutron, and the total system are investigated. Moreover, the probability distributions of the rotor angular momentum (R plots) and their projections onto the three principal axes (K-R plots) are analyzed. The evolution of the chiral mode from a chiral vibration at the low spins to a chiral rotation at high spins is illustrated at triaxial deformations gamma = 20 degrees and 30 degrees.

Abstract:Prompt gamma-gamma-gamma coincidence studies of neutron-rich nuclei with A = 99-113, populated in the spontaneous fission of Cf-252, were carried out at Gammasphere. From a high statistics data set, new band structures and significant extension of previously known bands were observed in Y-99,Y-101, Nb-101,Nb-105, Tc-105,Tc-107,Tc-109, Rh-111,Rh-113. One quasi-particle plus triaxial rotor calculations were carried out. These nuclei show a smooth evolution from axial symmetry in Yb to maximum triaxiality in Rh. In Mo-106 and Ru-110, pairs of Delta I = 1 doublet bands are established to high spins. Since these nuclei exhibit evidence for triaxial shapes, their close energy differences for states of the same spins, their constant and equal moments of inertia with spin and their AI = 1 transitions all support their interpretation as chiral bands. Tilted axis cranking calculations likewise support their assignment as chiral bands but show they have a different composition than the chiral bands observed in odd-odd nuclei.

Abstract:The paradox on the previous interpretation for the nuclear chiral geometry based on the effective angle has been clarified by reexamining the system with the particle-hole configuration pi(1h(11/2))(1) circle times nu(1h(11/2))(-1) and a rotor with the deformation parameter gamma = 30 degrees. It is found that the paradox is caused by the fact that the angular momentum of the rotor is much smaller than those of the proton and the neutron near the bandhead. Hence, it does not support a chiral rotation interpretation near the bandhead. The nuclear chiral geometry based on the effective angle makes sense only when the angular momentum of the rotor becomes comparable with those of the proton and neutron for a particular range of spin values.

Abstract:The microscopic understanding on the influence of the pairing correlations or the superfluidity on the nuclear chiral rotation has been a longstanding and challenging problem. Based on the three-dimensional cranking covariant density functional theory, a shell-model-like approach with exact particle number conservation is implemented to take into account the pairing correlations and applied for the chiral doublet bands built on the configuration πh11/22⊗νh11/2−1 in 135Nd. The data available, including the I−ω relation, as well as the electromagnetic transition probabilities B(M1) and B(E2), are well reproduced. It is found that the superfluidity can reduce the critical frequency and make the chiral rotation easier. The mechanism is that the particle/hole alignments along the short/long axis are reduced by the pairing correlations, resulting in the enhanced preference of the collective rotation along the intermediate axis, and inducing the early appearance of the chiral rotation.

Abstract:We introduce chiral rotational spectroscopy: a new technique that enables the determination of the orientated optical activity pseudotensor components $B_{XX}$, $B_{YY}$ and $B_{ZZ}$ of chiral molecules, in a manner that reveals the enantiomeric constitution of a sample and provides an incisive signal even for a racemate. Chiral rotational spectroscopy could find particular use in the analysis of molecules that are chiral solely by virtue of their isotopic constitution and molecules with multiple chiral centres. The principles that underpin chiral rotational spectroscopy could be exploited moreover in the search for molecular chirality in space, which, if found, might add weight to hypotheses that biological homochirality and indeed life itself are of cosmic origin. A basic design for a chiral rotational spectrometer together with a model of its functionality is given. Our proposed technique offers the more familiar polarisability components $\alpha_{XX}$, $\alpha_{YY}$ and $\alpha_{ZZ}$ as by-products, which could see it find use even for achiral molecules.
