Abstract:Chirality is a distinct signature that characterizes triaxial shapes in nuclei. We report the first observation of chirality in the nucleus $^{135}$Pr using a high-statistics Gammasphere experiment with the $^{123}$Sb($^{16}$O,4n)$^{135}$Pr reaction. Two chiral-partner bands with the configuration $\pi(1h_{11/2})^1\otimes \nu(1h_{11/2})^{-2}$ have been identified in this nucleus. Angular distribution analyses of the $\Delta I = 1$ connecting transitions between the two chiral partners have revealed a dominant dipole character. Quasiparticle triaxial rotor model calculations are in good agreement with the experiment. This is the first time that both signatures of triaxiality--chirality and wobbling--have been observed in the same nucleus.

Abstract:Solid experimental evidence for triaxial nuclear shape is difficult to obtain and is quite rare. Such evidence can be provided by the phenomena of chiral rotation and wobbling motion, as these can occur only in triaxially deformed nuclei. Although nuclear chirality is well documented in different mass regions, experimental evidence for multiple chiral bands as well as for wobbling motion has been reported so far only in a few nuclei. Pd and Rh nuclei in the A approximate to 100 mass region have been recently studied, and transverse wobbling motion as well as multiple chiral band structures were identified for the first time in this region. These observations provide experimental evidence for the predicted triaxial shape in this mass region, and new data which enable a better understanding of the studied phenomena.

Abstract:Three ΔI=1 bands with the πg9/2⊗νg9/2 configuration have been identified in Br393574 . Angular distribution, linear polarization, and lifetime measurements were performed to determine the multipolarity, type, mixing ratio, and absolute transition probability of the transitions. By comparing these experimental observations with the corresponding fingerprints and the quantum particle rotor model calculations, the second and third lowest bands are, respectively, suggested as the chiral partner and one-phonon wobbling excitation built on the yrast band. Abstract:The experimental evidence for the collective wobbling motion of triaxial nuclei is reviewed. The classification into transverse and longitudinal in the presence of quasiparticle excitations is discussed. The description by means of the quasiparticle+triaxial rotor model is discussed in detail. The structure of the states is analyzed using the spin-coherent-state and spin-squeezed-state representations of the reduced density matrices of the total and particle angular momenta, which distill the corresponding classical precessional motions. Various approximate solutions of the quasiparticle+triaxial rotor model are evaluated. The microscopic studies of wobbling in the small-amplitude random phase approximation are discussed. Selected studies of wobbling by means of the triaxial projected shell model are presented, which focus on how this microscopic approach removes certain deficiencies of the semi-microscopic quasiparticle+triaxial rotor model.

Abstract:The chirality in soft triaxial nuclei is investigated for the first time with the time-dependent and tilted axis cranking covariant density functional theories on a three-dimensional space lattice in a microscopic and self-consistent way. Taking the puzzling chiral nucleus $^{106}$Ag as an example, the experimental energies of the observed nearly degenerate bands are well reproduced without any free parameters beyond the well-defined density functional. A novel chiral mode in soft triaxial nuclei is newly revealed from the microscopic dynamics of the total angular momentum. This opens a new research area for the study of chirality, particularly in relation to soft nuclear shapes.

Semiclassical Features of Wobbling and Chiral Properties in Nuclei

Abstract:A semiclassical approach is used to describe the wobbling and chiral motion in even-even and odd-even nuclei The trial function involved in the variational equation for the quantal action is a coherent state for the SU(2 ) group associated to a triaxial rotor for the case of an even-even system and a coherent state for the group SU(2)$\otimes$ SU(2) describing the particle-core system. Application is made for $^{158}$Er and $^{161, 163, 165,167}$Lu, ${135}$Pr. Th parameters involved in the coherent state expression are complex numbers depending on time and play the role of the phase space generalized conjugate coordinates whose equation of motion may be brought to the Hamilton canonical form.Within a harmonic approximation one analytically obtains the wobbling frequencies which are further used to calculate the excitation energies for the states forming a band. A new procedure to quantize the classical orbitals is proposed. In the new picture the electromagnetic transition probabilities are calculated both for the in-band and the intraband transitions. Additionally, for odd systems, some other observable like aligned angular momentum, excitation energies relative to a reference spectrum, dynamic moment of energies are calculated and compared with the corresponding experimental <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://data.In" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> the parameter space one identified several nuclear phases with specific properties. An example is given where the wobbling and chiral motions coexist. The existence of a transversal wobbling is widely commented. A new boson representation for the angular momenta is proposed. The approach was successfully applied to $^{135}$Pr. One concludes that semiclassical description is an efficient tool to account quantitatively for the wobbling and chiral properties in nuclei.

Abstract:Excited states of $^{80}$Br have been investigated via the $^{76}$Ge($^{11}$B, $\alpha$3n) and $^{76}$Ge($^{7}$Li, 3n) reactions and a new $\Delta I$ = 1 band has been identified which resides $\sim$ 400 keV above the yrast band. Based on the experimental results and their comparison with the triaxial particle rotor model calculated ones, a chiral character of the two bands within the $\pi g_{9/2}\otimes \nu g_{9/2}$ configuration is proposed, which provides the first evidence for chirality in the $A\sim80$ region.

Abstract:Prompt gamma-gamma-gamma coincidence studies of neutron-rich nuclei with A = 99-113, populated in the spontaneous fission of Cf-252, were carried out at Gammasphere. From a high statistics data set, new band structures and significant extension of previously known bands were observed in Y-99,Y-101, Nb-101,Nb-105, Tc-105,Tc-107,Tc-109, Rh-111,Rh-113. One quasi-particle plus triaxial rotor calculations were carried out. These nuclei show a smooth evolution from axial symmetry in Yb to maximum triaxiality in Rh. In Mo-106 and Ru-110, pairs of Delta I = 1 doublet bands are established to high spins. Since these nuclei exhibit evidence for triaxial shapes, their close energy differences for states of the same spins, their constant and equal moments of inertia with spin and their AI = 1 transitions all support their interpretation as chiral bands. Tilted axis cranking calculations likewise support their assignment as chiral bands but show they have a different composition than the chiral bands observed in odd-odd nuclei.

Abstract:Progresses of the chirality in atomic nuclei are reviewed, in particular, the recently proposed collective Hamiltonian based on tilted axis cranking approach to describe chiral vibration and rotation modes, and the experimental achievements for chirality and multiple chiral doublets, i.e., in Ag-106, Ce-133, and Rh-103. The first experimental evidences of multiple chiral doublet bands with distinct and identical configuration found in Ce-133 and Rh-103 are discussed in detail.

Abstract:A collective model Hamiltonian incorporating a β−soft potential is proposed to elucidate phenomena related to triaxiality in transitional systems. The solutions derived from the model built within the core-particle scheme can be approximated using Bessel functions and subsequently applied to describe the exotic high-spin phenomena observed in the A≈130 mass region. The results indicate that chiral and wobbling rotations in a β−soft system may exhibit robustness against β vibrations, suggesting a collective vibration mechanism for multiple chiral doublet bands and multiple rotation-wobbling bands in triaxial nuclei. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevC.110.034301 ©2024 American Physical Society

It is applied to investigating the chirality in odd-A nucleus 135Nd with πh11/22⊗νh11/2−1 configuration for the first time in a fully quantal approach. Abstract:By adopting the fully quantal triaxial particle-rotor model, the candidate chiral doublet bands in odd-A nuclei Rh-103 and Rh-105 with pg(-1) pi g(9/2)(-1) circle times nu h(11/2)(2)configuration are studied. For the doublet bands in both nuclei, agreement is excellent for the observed energies over the entire spin range and B(M1)/B(E2) at higher spin range. The evolution of the chiral geometry with angular momentum is discussed in detail by using the angular momentum components and their probability distributions. Abstract:Symmetry and its breaking are basic scientific problems.Chiral symmetries are common in nature,for example,the macroscopic spiral arms of galaxies and the rotation of planets;the microscopic spirals of the mineral crystalline,the organic molecules and the elementary particles.The concept of chirality in atomic nuclei was first proposed in 1997.Since then many efforts have been made to understand chiral symmetry and its spontaneous breaking in atomic nuclei.Up to now,more than 30 candidates of chiral nuclei have been reported in the 80,100,130,and 190 mass regions.The concept of the chirality in atomic nuclei,the prediction,the signal,and the experimental verification of the chiral nuclei are briefly introduced;the recent theoretical and experimental progress are reviewed,in particular the existence of multiple chiral doublets (MxD),i.e.,more than one pair of chiral doublet bands in one single nucleus;the simultaneous spontaneous breaking of chiral and reflection symmetry in the newly observed atomic nuclei is introduced,together with a prospect on the future study on nuclear chiral symmetry.

Abstract:The significant progresses of the chirality in atomic nuclei are briefly reviewed for both experimental and theoretical sides. A particle rotor model is developed which couples several valence protons and neutrons to a rigid triaxial rotor core and applied to investigating the chirality in odd-A nucleus Nd-135. Static chirality has been shown to be a transient phenomenon surrounding by chiral vibrations. It is found that the B(M1) staggering is associated strongly with the characters of nuclear chirality, i.e., the staggering is weak in chiral vibration region while strong in the static chirality region.

The evolution of the chiral symmetry in cesium isotopes

Abstract:Following the reports of candidate chiral doublet bands observed in cesium isotopes, the possible chiral candidates and the evolution of three-dimensional rotation in $^{120-134}{\textrm{Cs}}$ are investigated within the microscopic three-dimensional tilted axis cranking covariant density functional theory (3DTAC-CDFT). By investigating the evolution of the polar angle $\theta$ and azimuth angle $\varphi$ as a function of rotational frequency $\hbar\omega$, the transition from the planar rotation to the chiral rotation has been found in $^{121-133}{\textrm{Cs}}$. The corresponding critical rotational frequency $\omega_{\textrm{crit}}$ of the appearance of chiral aplanar rotation decreases as neutron number increases, which can be attributed to the neutrons in $(gd)$ and $(sd)$ shells having smaller angular momentum components along both the short and long axes, and larger components along medium axis, respectively. In comparison, only planar rotation has been obtained in $^{120,134}{\textrm{Cs}}$. With these interpretations, the obtained $I\sim\hbar\omega$ and energy spectra as well as $B(M1)/B(E2)$ values show reasonable agreement with the available experimental data. In addition, the evolution of quadrupole deformation $\beta$ and triaxial deformation $\gamma$ are also discussed.

Abstract:The possible chiral doublet structures in Rh-104 with the asymmetric configuration pig(9/2)(-1) circle times nuh(11/2) have been studied in the triaxial particle-rotor model. The spectra, the I - omega relations and the transition probabilities support the existence of the chiral bands in this nucleus. The gamma-deformation interval -35degrees less than or equal to gamma less than or equal to -25degrees for appearance of chiral doublets in Rh-104 is given. With appropriate moment of inertia and the configuration pig(9/2)(-1) circle times nuh(11/2), the experimental spectra in Rh-104, Rh-106, Rh-108, Ag-110 have been well reproduced by the yrast bands of the triaxial particle-rotor-model calculation.
