Abstract:In light of the archetype of scapegoat and Rene Girard＇s four patterns of scapegoatism,the thesis argues that Heathcliff,the protagonist in Wuthering Heights,is a scapegoat of the highly hierarchical and class-conscious society.The depiction of four aspects in the novel：family crises caused by Heathcliff,his revenge towards the family members of Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange,his preferential marks as a scapegoat with his dark skin and his foundling family background,and the mental discrimination and physical violence he suffers is the reflection of the four patterns of scapegoatism of Rene Girard.

Abstract:Ethical literary criticism is a new theory generated from the trend of ethical criticism. It was founded on the basis of the theory of the three stages of human civilization, namely, natural selection, ethical selection, and scientific selection. Focusing on the analysis of ethical choices in literary texts with terms such as ethical choice, ethical identity, ethical will and so on, ethical literary criticism interprets all kinds of literary writings, dissects examples of ethical choices in different environments and contexts, and emphasizes the ethical value of literature in search of moral enlightenment and instruction for the readers. Through the deployment of its own terms, ethical literary criticism can be used to obtain new interpretations and understanding of literary texts, and effectively solve the problems raised by the literary text. Any theory must have its own theoretical framework. If there is no theoretical framework, arguments cannot constitute a theory. As a theory, ethical literary criticism was founded on the central category of ethical choice. As the framework of ethical literary criticism, it is the basic structure and model of the system. It is not only the underlying logic of literary theory but also its basic principle.

Abstract:Lolita has been under heated dispute over incest and pedophilia ever since its publication. The novel has been hence involved in the dispute of morality and non-morality. If interpreted from the perspeetive of ethics, Humbert, the protagonist, is fluctuating between degeneration, struggle and redemption on account of his violation of social ethics. Hence, Lolita is a fiction of Humbert＇s ethical struggle and Humbert＇s life is,in essence,an ethical tragedy instead of a moral tragedy.

Abstract:After the first biological selection of humankind, it is regarded as the second important choice, the ethical one, that Adam and Eve picked and ate the forbidden fruit in Eden and Oedipus solved the riddle of the Sphinx. It is the ethical choice to distinguish humankind from animals and made savagery people to be ethical beings. In ethical sense, Man is Sphinx(an existence of Sphinx factor), a combination of rational factor and animal factor. Sphinx factor is the core content of ethical statement in literary works. In The Picture of Dorian Gray, Gray makes an ethical choice which is to exchange the identity with his picture that results in his tragedy in the end. halo Calvino in The Cloven Viscount describes the conflict of rational will and irrational will in the divided viscount, as represented in the kind viscount and the evil one. In classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, Monkey King (Sun Wukong) is the embodiment of natural will Hsuan Tsang (Tang-monk; Tangseng) his master imposes restraints upon him by means of a hat and a spell to it, and ultimately helps him convert from a monkey to a human being (a Buddhist). These highly metaphorical literary texts not only provide us examples of different combinations of Sphinx factor and its variations, reveal clearly the value of this ethical choice in the history of social and individuals, but also manifest the ethical conflicts among rational will, natural will and irrational will. In reflecting on these ethical issues we feel greatly enlightened.

Abstract:Fu Ping is a Chinese novel written by Wang Anyi. It’s a story of the country girl named Fu Ping, who settled down in Shanghai and found her true self. Taking Fu Ping’s life as the perspective, the novel depicts a series of characters who have endured the hardships and yearned for the city life, thus painting a vivid picture of the mundane, delicate, and down-to-earth life of the lower class people in Shanghai. Using Translation Behavior Criticism as the tool, this paper analyses the translator behavior reflected in the English translation of Fu Ping. The translation maintains the Chinese culture of the source language and respects the writing style of the original. At the same time, it considers the readers of the target language, producing a translation which is in accordance with the poetics of the target language.The translation methods, translation strategies and translator behavior of Howard Goldblatt are described and presented on a whole by utilizing the theoretical framework of Zhou Lingshun’ s Translator Behavior Criticism.

Abstract:From the perspective of sociological theory, Foucault's concepts of power, power-knowledge, and discipline are one-sided. While Foucault contends that there is no center of power, his account of power remains top-down or structural, missing the interactive and enabling aspects of power. A more balanced view would suggest that all exercises of power include meaningful agency (the ability to do something); social structures (not simply as constraints but as interactive creations); social knowledge (including both reifying truth claims and enabling truth or knowledge); and social-ontological being-in-the-social-world (both as enabling and dominating).

Abstract:As for Thomas Hardy's Jude The Obscure, the cause of Jude's tragedy has always been a topic of great concern in literary study. The existing researches lay more stress on external factors such as social contradictions and class orders, claiming that the inferior class status and the hidden social injustice are the main causes of Jude's disaster. However, this paper argues that Jude's weak ethical consciousness and his deviation of ethical identity play a vital role in his tragedy, which is the deeper root of his obscurity. Due to his excessive emphasis on free will and unconstrained desire while neglecting his responsibilities and obligations assigned to him by his ethical identity, Jude fell into multiple predicaments in marriage, career and interpersonal communication, and finally passed away in an unknown and sorrowful manner. This paper mainly explores how Jude deviates his ethical identity in love relationship, father-son relationship, and teacher-student relationship, as well as the profound influence on his tragic life.

Abstract:The mirror constitutes a significant image that recurs multiple times in The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, and it is mainly associated with Mick Kelly and Biff Brannon, who are reckoned in the novel grotesques in terms of sexuality. This article does not consider the mirror as something merely reflecting the subject in front of it, but as a media that occasions self-examination and self-reconstitution of the subject. It superimposes Michel Foucault’s concept of heterotopias onto McCullers’s depiction of the two characters’ construction and reconstruction of subjectivity as well as their search for identification. Nonetheless, the so-called identification with the mirror image, paralleled by what Lacan observes in the mirror stage, is but a misidentification, for the mirror is in essence a heterotopia of illusion.

An Inquiry on Relation among Discourse, Truth and Power in Michel Foucault

Abstract:Foucault calls his work “a critical history of the thought.” However, the critical history of the thought is the time, when any truth games appear, but not the time, when the truth is obtained or hindered. This history is directly linked to the power and to how the power operates. Foucault, who also deals with the power matter in line with the relation between discourse, truth and power, inquires function of the power in any enclosed institutions formed depending on development conditions of the capitalism such as hospitals, jails, etc. His main problem is to deal with the power by acting with any power relationship and to make a power solution accordingly. In this context, Foucault also adopts the states as a matter depending on analysis of modern institutions. He thinks that there is a resistance opportunity in wherever the power is available. Resistance means in some ways setting forth a different discourse and developing a game other than the power game. Therefore, Foucault, who thinks that, when the power is at stake, one should go out of the existing game and leave the state our of the game, makes a critical room for philosophy at this point.

Abstract:Since M.A.K. Halliday published his influential essay (1971) on the thematic function of transitivity patterns in William Golding’s The Inheritors more than 30 years ago, there have appeared numerous stylistic investigations into transitivity in literary narratives. The investigations, however, are mostly concerned with power relations between conflicting parties and for those that probe into a character’s inner life, what is revealed is usually a certain mental state or ‘mind style’ of the character. A transitivity analysis of Sheila Watson’s The Double Hook(1989) demonstrates that the model of transitivity can function as a useful tool in revealing the process of a character’s mental transformation, and, further, that a transitivity analysis may shed fresh light on the interpretation of the text. The present study focuses on the process of mental transformation of the novella’s protagonist James on his return journey, a process subtly brought out by the change in transitivity patterns, and a process that has been neglected by previous critics who have concentrated on the physical aspect of James’s return. It is argued that James’s mental transformation as realized by the change in transitivity patterns is of great importance to the novella’s theme of forming a spiritual community.
