Abstract:In comparison with its Western counterpart, ethical literary criticism boasts a distinct system of critical discourse as its important feature and significant contribution, through the development of which it has become a appliable critical mode. At the core of this system lies the notion of ethical choice. The specific actions of making ethical choice in a way contribute to the main content of literary works. Viewed in this light, only when the reader is adequately alive to ethical choice can he gain a deeper understanding of the work. One's ethical choice is inextricably linked to his ethical identity while inhibited or influenced by his ethical consciousness. At issue is whether one's ethical consciousness will necessarily lead him to take ethical action and make ethical choice correspondingly. This article offers as examples Toni Morrison's A Mercy and three of Ian McEwan's works - namely Butterflies, "Homemade", and " My Purple Scented Novel" - to further explore this issue from three aspects. Firstly, characters transform ethical consciousness into ethical action, thereby making the right ethical choice, as does the enslaved mother in Toni Morrison's A Mercy. Secondly, characters who lose their bearings for lack of the guidance of ethical consciousness take the wrong ethical action, from which ensues the improper ethical choice; the two narrators in Ian McEwan's Butterflies and " Homemade" fall into this category. Thirdly, characters with ethical consciousness fall short of the reader's expectation since they do not further develop it into ethical action or make the right ethical choice. A case in point would be Park Sparrow in "My Purple Scented Novel". In the former two cases, characters take ethical actions in line with their ethical consciousness; that is, it is ethical consciousness that guides or motivates their ethical actions. In the third case, however, a rupture between the two can be seen when the character does not take ethical action conforming to his ethical consciousness, neither does he make the right ethical choice.
