Abstract:Road lighting covers the region of mesopic vision and there is no unified luminance efficiency curve in this region. In this experiment, we used an internationally accepted and applied method, which is based on the measurement of reaction time. We choose reaction time and contrast as the basic factors and incorporate background luminance, visual angle, spectrum and visual eccentricity to study their effects on reaction time. We use programs to control the parameters so as to imitate an environment that can be applied in our projects. The result indicates that reaction time and contrast rate show an exponential declining relation. We also study the effects of other parameters mentioned above on reaction time. These research and results are very helpful in enhancing road lighting quality and for future study.
Stray Light And Bandpass Correction In The Spectral Measurement For Light Emitting Diodes

Abstract:The present paper introduces the stray light and bandpass correction methods for spectrometers. The line spread function of spectrometer is characterized by a He-Ne laser. Assuming that the spectrometer is a wavelength invariable system, the stray light distribution matrix is constructed by the derived line spread functions. The stray light correction matrix is then derived by matrix conversion from the stray light distribution matrix. The measured signals of the spectrometer are finally multiplied by the stray light correction matrix to correct the stray light errors. The bandpass functions of the spectrometer are characterized in three different wavelength ranges, respectively. And then three groups of bandpass correction coefficients are calculated accordingly. The calculation is divided into several steps. Given the measurement results at the target wavelength position and the ones on the neighbor bandwidths, the bandpass correction results are obtained by weight averaging of them. The bandpass correction coefficients are used as the weights. The two correction methods are applied to a multi-channel fast spectrometer to measure LEDs of different color. The results show that the stray light and the bandpass errors can be corrected effectively. The chromaticity coordinates of the LEDs are corrected by (-0.003, 0.007) for the maximum. Furthermore, the method introduced in this paper can reduce the application cost, simplify the calculation under a reasonable precision, and make the application of the correction easier.
Comparison and Application of Mesopic Models under the Tunnel Environment

Abstract:The present research analyzes the differences between the luminance calculated using the USP,S,MOVE,MES2 model and its causes,as well as discusses the applicability of each model in tunnel lighting from the perspective of visual conditions.Results show that in the interior zone of the tunnel,luminance calculated by MOVE ranks the highest,followed by MES2 and S model,and USP ranks the lowest.The major difference among visual performance based systems is adaptation coefficient x.Meanwhile,visual tasks with chromatic,high contrast and large eccentricity can enhance the weight of photopic function V (λ) in mesopic function Vm (λ);while visual tasks with achromatic,low contrast and small eccentricity can strengthen the weight of scotopic function V'(λ).The chromatic,eccentricity below 5 degrees,negative and positive contrast target is more frequently encountered in tunnel.Thus,MOVE model is more applicable to describe the actual vision in the tunnel driving environment.
Superior Application of LED to Street Lighting

Abstract:To compare the luminous efficiencies of different street lightings,it is necessary to establish an appropriate photometric measuring model.In this paper, two kinds of traditional street lights and two kinds of Lighting Emitting Diode(LED) sources were selected for comparing their luminous efficiencies in the mesopic state and photopic state,then the MOVE model was used to derive the luminous efficiencies of the four kinds of lightings.Compared with the luminous efficiencies in photopic state,the luminous efficiency of the LED street lights and the Metal Halide(MH) lamps have improved significantly in the mesopic vision.However,the efficiency of the Hight Pressure Sodium(HPS) has decreased under the mesopic vision.Furthermore,when background luminance varies from 0.03 cd/m2 to 0.1 cd/m2,and then to 0.3 cd/m2,the luminous efficiency of the LED street lighting in the mesopic visual state will decrease from 131.2 lm/W to 122.7 lm/W firstly but then increase to 140.5 lm/W.It is concluded that the sensitivity of human eye changes in the different brightnesses of backgrounds.Among HPS,MH,standard LED light and modified LED light based on mesopic vision theory,the LED can offer the best solution in energy saving.Moreover,the LED lightings with more high efficiency can be obtained further by optimizing their spectra.

Abstract:In this research work detection rate was measured to evaluate the visual performance of human eyes at three mesopic light levels: 0.01, 0.1 and 1cdm-2. Effects on visual performance at mesopic levels were analysed and spectral sensitivity curves were indirectly drawn based on the visual performance values. A comparison between the research results of the brightness-matching method and the performance-based method proves that the results from the latter method are in essence compatible with the results from the bright-matching method, since they are both in accordance with the Purkinje shift. Furthermore, the results of the performance-based method reflect the contribution of the colour channel in the visual information processing system.

Abstract:We propose dedicated road lighting, which is significantly superior to the existing lighting technologies for the city park and housing estate. This dedicated lighting employs freeform surfaces to effectively control the optical field of the LED source to produce three kinds of illumination modes for the curved road, straight road, and the small public square, respectively, perfectly matching the road conditions of the city park and housing estate. A mathematical model of freeform illumination design is presented to achieve a conceptual design of this road lighting, and a numerical technology for solving this design problem is introduced for the first time, to our knowledge. An illumination model of this conceptual design is constructed. The experimental results of the conceptual design tally closely with the target. This dedicated road lighting, integrated with energy saving, healthy lighting and artistic beauty, provides a beautiful landscape for the city park and the housing estate at night, and will play an important role in improving quality of life of the urban inhabitants.

Abstract:In order to evaluate the photometric performance of vehicle headlamps with a standardized , accurate and reliable method, the CIE 188 Technical Report specifies a set of certain methods to assess the photometric performance of vehicle headlighting systems .The assessment can be achieved with a self -developed software.Three subjective rating tasks were conducted to verify the rationality of the methods described in this report and the suitableness with Chinese subjects .The comparison between the results calculated according to CIE 188 Technical Report and subjective rating scores indicated there ’s no significant correlation between the two methods .It is necessary to do further research on the methods described in this report.

Abstract:A new parameter -LEC (luminous efficiency coefficient) is introduced to evaluate the relative superiority among MH (metal halide lamp),HPS (high pressure sodium lamp) and HPM (high pressure mercury lamp) on road lighting. The values of LEC is calculated by using some data regarding V~*_((λ)) from direct heterochromatic brightness comparison method in different luminance levels (from 10~(-5) to 10~(2) cd·m~(-2); 10 degree visual angle). The use of LEC can be a reference to help designers to select light sources for road lighting. The experimental results show MH is more effective than HPS on peripheral detection according with the theoretical computation of LEC.

Abstract:In this study, we conducted a combined examination of the photometric and colorimetric performances of trichromatic light sources, which are synthesized by three kinds of light-source units, by transferring their photometric performance to chromaticity diagrams. Contour maps of three photometric performances, which are within a triangle gamut-area formed by three chromaticity coordinates relating to three-light-source-units of a trichromatic light source, were drawn to include the luminous efficacy of radiation (LER) in photopic, scotopic, and cirtopic vision. Functional models of the three different photometric performances as a function of chromaticity coordinates x and y based on the contour maps have been proposed. The functional models quantify all the photometric characteristics in the gamut area and can predict the performances for different synthesis of trichromatic light sources. Using the proposed model, it is possible to evaluate the present performance of trichromatic light sources and provide a method for optimization. An example of evaluation and optimization of a commercial RGB-LED light source was conducted using this proposed approach. Results show that the randomly chosen optimized points in the best optimization ways in the chromaticity diagram for LERs reach 16%, 31%, and 72% improvement in photopic, scotopic, and cirtopic vision, respectively.

Abstract:As a rapid developing solid state lighting, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have great potential in application of road lighting, but their performance evaluation in a long term are still lacked. In situ and laboratory measurements were conducted for the purpose of comparing the characteristic parameters and lighting performance of three kinds of street lamps: LEDs, high pressure sodium (HPS) lamps and ceramic discharge metal halide (CDM) lamps. The results of laboratory measurements in 2000 hours show the three kinds of lamps have almost the same initial luminaire efficacy, which lead to the average road illuminance is proportion to the lamp power. The results of road illuminance distribution measurements in 3000 hours show LEDs have better color rendering index, longitudinal uniformity of illuminance, and maintenance of road illuminance than HPS and CDM lamps.

Abstract:A good lighting environment for roads at night is essential for traffic safety. Accurate and timely knowledge of road lighting quality is meaningful for the planning and management of urban road lighting systems. Traditional field observations and mobile observations have limitations for road lightning quality evaluation at a large scale. This study explored the potential of 0.92 m resolution JL1-3B nighttime light remote sensing images to evaluate road lighting quality in Nanjing, China. Combined with synchronous field measurements and JL1-3B data, multiple regression and random forest regression with several independent variable combinations were developed and compared to determine the optimal model for surface illuminance estimation. Cross validation results showed that the random forest model with Hue, saturability, ln(Intensity), ln(Red), ln(Green) and ln(Blue) as the input independent variables had the best performance (R2 = 0.75 and RMSE = 9.79 lux). Then, this model was used to map the surface illuminance. The spatial scopes of roads were extracted from Google Earth images, and the illuminance within roads was derived to calculate the average, standard deviation and coefficient of variation to indicate the overall brightness level and brightness uniformity of the roads. This study provides a quantitative and effective reference for road lighting evaluation.

Abstract:As the number of traffic deaths grows each year, traffic security draws more and more attention according to the WHO global status report on road safety 2013. For the sake of assessing the photometric performance of vehicle headlighting systems with a standardized, accurate and reliable method, the CIE 188 Technical Report specifies the methods to assess the photometric performance of vehicle headlighting systems. In order to verify the rationality of the methods described in this report and the suitableness of the methods if used in China, three subjective rating tasks were conducted. An aided software for this experiment was developed and the validity and accuracy of the software was verified by the calculation with a professional machine. The comparison between the results calculated according to CIE 188 Technical Report and subjective rating scores indicated that it was necessary to conduct further research on the methods described in this report before they were promoted in China.

Abstract:Rising demand with diminishing reserves of oil and gas spread the energy crisis all over the world. Renewable energy and efficiency technology are the keys to resolve the energy crisis. As the improvement in luminous efficacy, LEDs have been an energy-saving choice for general illumination and road lighting. This paper made a comparison between LEDs system and HPS system for road lighting to evaluate which one is more energy efficient and discussed some factors may influence the efficiency of LEDs system and HPS system, such as mesopic vision, dimming, color of illumination. Though the difference in total luminaire efficacy was not that much in favor of the LEDs, LEDs show a promising prospect in the near future because of the dramatic improvement in luminous efficacy.

Abstract:In light-emitting diode (LED) street lamp design, it has always been an obsession that how to achieve an expected illumination distribution confined to a given region. To solve this problem, a new optimization strategy is proposed. In view of the practicability of actual production, we select the relatively mature approach that is based on both the Snell law and the energy conservation law which would obtain coordinate relations between the spaces the light source and target plane owned respectively and a set of equations to establish the initial construction of free-form lens. In addition, all the processes of simulation, analysis and optimization as well are accomplished in software. Generally speaking, for construction method which is in the light of the set of equations, the major improvement ideology focus on finding out the most suitable mapping relationship between the two coordinate systems. So does our work.In order to get better performance, the grid of control points must be modified. Then the core problem lies in determining the direction and distance of every point's movement contained in the grid. The rule of changing direction has a bearing on energy relations while migration length is gained by direct search algorithm. We apply the method in uniform illumination and get some effect. In short, the optimization strategy provides a practical and simple way for street lamp design of LED illumination.

Abstract:This paper presents the measurement results of the reduced luminance coefficients of an asphalt pavement sample under three common light sources: high pressure sodium lamp (HP S), metal halide lamp (MH), and light-emitting diode (LED), with a specially designed two-dimensional gonioreflectometer. The relative spectral reflectances are obtained with calculation for three different incident angles which indicate light sources with high output in the long wavelength region may be more effective. The measured average luminance coefficient for HPS and MH are 17% larger than that of LED. It means that LED road lamps need higher illuminance than BPS and MU to realize the same brightness for road lighting.

Abstract:This article presents the research on a road lighting design. In this kind of design for a specific type of a roadway, the number and spacing of luminaires are calculated on the basis of luminaire photometric parameters such as intensity curve (LPIC) and luminous flux. The values of these parameters are measured using the luxmeter, i.e., a measuring instrument in which the spectral sensitivity should imitate spectral sensitivity of the human eye V(λ). However, the luxmeter’s spectral sensitivity S(λ) is not perfectly matched with the required one and varies for different instruments, resulting in measurement errors. To avoid this measurement error, the spectral mismatch correction factor (SMCF) should be applied to luxmeter’s readings. For a given luxmeter, the SMCF values depend on the measured light’s spectral composition SPD (described also by the lamp’s correlated color temperature CCT). Unfortunately, many laboratories do not apply SMCF to their luxmeter readings. Typical measurement laboratories are not in possession of SMCF data as this kind of data is hard to obtain and can be provided only by the state-of-the-art photometric laboratories for a high cost. Consequently, these typical measurement laboratories provide inaccurate LPIC data to costumers. In this article, it has been shown that a design process of road lighting installations needs to be based on lighting fixture LPIC’s measurements with SMCF values being taken into account. Omitting this fact may result in road lighting installation made on the basis of a design utilizing incorrect LPIC data, which would have higher energy consumption then expected at a design stage.

Abstract:With the background park lighting application, and based on the characteristics of advanced devices in the system, this paper studies the photovoltaic (PV) light emitted diode (LED) lighting system in three main aspects, which are the design of the whole system, hybrid control strategy combining the maximum power point tracing (MPPT, for PV panels) with the energy management(for battery), and LED driving and dimming. Taking the example of an actual 50W high luminous efficacy LED system, the design, implantation and experiments are described in detail. In addition, the long-term measurement results in real environment are illustrated in this paper.

Abstract:The traditional eye sensitivity function based on photopic vision is not applicable in the mesopic vision state.The mesopic vision is studied by using the photopic and scotopic vision state sensitivity functions.And the model which links the mesopic sensitivity with the photopic and scotopic states is built.Based on the model,the luminous efficacy of mesopic vision is calculated and applied to the spectrum distribution of LED light sources.The results show that the luminous efficacy of a commercial YAG phosphor converted white LED is up to 172.7 lm/W at mesopic vision,which is 67.2% higher than that of photopic vision state.We also conclude that the optimal spectral power distribution of the LED will greatly increase the mesopic luminous efficacy.
