Abstract:TiO2 modified Al2O3 binary oxide was prepared by a wet-impregnation method and used as the support for ruthenium catalyst. The catalytic performance of Ru/TiO2–Al2O3 catalyst in CO2 methanation reaction was investigated. Compared with Ru/Al2O3 catalyst, the Ru/TiO2–Al2O3 catalytic system exhibited a much higher activity in CO2 methanation reaction. The reaction rate over Ru/TiO2–Al2O3 was 0.59mol CO2·(g Ru)−1·h−1, 3.1 times higher than that on Ru/Al2O3 [0.19mol CO2·(g Ru)−1·h−1]. The effect of TiO2 content and TiO2–Al2O3 calcination temperature on catalytic performance was addressed. The corresponding structures of each catalyst were characterized by means of H2-TPR, XRD, and TEM. Results indicated that the averaged particle size of the Ru on TiO2–Al2O3 support is 2.8nm, smaller than that on Al2O3 support of 4.3nm. Therefore, we conclude that the improved activity over Ru/TiO2–Al2O3 catalyst is originated from the smaller particle size of ruthenium resulting from a strong interaction between Ru and the rutile-TiO2 support, which hindered the aggregation of Ru nano-particles.

Abstract:Density functional theory investigations on CO2 hydrogenation to methanol mechanisms over Cu13 cluster loaded catalyst were performed. The results indicate that introducing TiO2 into Al2O3 promoted the residual electrons from Al2O3 surface directionally transmitted to the interface formed by the loaded Cu13 cluster and the support surface, thus created the electron-rich active interface. Incorporating single atom Ga promoter further gathered the residual electrons and stabilized the loaded Cu13 clusters. The electron-rich property of the active interface promoted the chemical adsorption and activation of both CO2 and the generated carbonyl species. Further favors the hydrogenating of carbonyl intermediates to methanol and effectively enhances the methanol selectivity. Moreover, CO2 priors to hydrogenated to methanol via reverse water gas shift pathway over Cu13/Ga-AT computational model with changed reaction rate controlling step with reduced activation energy. This work offers a simple approach for efficient copper-based methanol synthesis catalysts through control of interface electron structure.

Abstract:The titanium-modified γ-alumina-supported CuO catalysts have been prepared and used for methanol synthesis by CO 2 hydrogenation in high pressure micro-reactor. The results showed that the addition of TiO 2 was markedly promoted the activation of methanol synthesis by CO 2 hydrogenation,but restrained dimethyl ester synthesis by CO hydrogenation. That means that the hydrogenation of CO,CO 2 were essentially different.

Abstract:A highly active Cu/Zn/Al/Zr fibrous catalyst was developed for methanol synthesis from CO2 hydrogenation. Various factors that affect the activity of the catalyst, including the reaction temperature, pressure and space velocity, were investigated. The kinetic parameters in Graaf's kinetic model for methanol synthesis were obtained. A quasi-stable economical process for CO2 hydrogenation through CO circulation was simulated and higher methanol yield was obtained.

Abstract:Methanol synthesis derived from CO2 hydrogenation has attracted great attention in terms of CO2 recycling while suffering from the low activity and sintering of copper species. Herein, we unveil the remarkable activity (11.3%) and methanol STY (242 gCH3OH kgcat -1 h-1) of 8 wt% Cu/ZnAl2O4 at 220 degrees C and 3 MPa, far surpassing that of conventional 8 wt% Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 composite oxides (6.8% for CO2 conversion and 144 gCH3OH kgcat-1h- 1 for methanol STY). The brilliant capability of H2 dissociation over Cu/ZnAl2O4 promotes methanol production due to the strong metal-support interaction. In-depth characterization points that the interstitial H atoms in ZnAl2O4 support contribute to the generation of the formate species, whose hydrogenation to methanol is participated by the H atoms dissociated from Cu nanoparticles. Dual-site activation of H2 allows an acceleration of methanol synthesis. This work offers a new avenue to modify catalyst structure for effectual CO2 hydrogenation under moderate conditions.

Abstract:Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalysts are widely used in methanol synthesis due to their low cost and high catalytic activity. The structural and surface characteristics of Cu are crucial to the formation of the active sites for methanol production. In this study, a series of methods for the synthesis of Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 are employed to modulate the catalyst structure and catalytic efficiency for the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol. A correlation of catalytic activity with the Cu0 surface area and Cu particle sizes has been established. The Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst derived from hydrotalcite-like precursor (CZA-LDH) exhibits the maximum Cu0 specific surface area, the smallest Cu particle size, and high dispersion of elements, yielding the largest methanol production rate, which is comparable to the commercial Cu catalyst. Stability testing shows that the CZA-LDH catalyst can retain ∼94% of the initial activity. The in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis indicates that HCOO*, CH3O* intermediates, and product CH3OH are generated on the catalyst surface, and the reaction follows the formate pathway.

Abstract:CuZnCeTi mixed oxide catalysts were prepared by coprecipitation and studied in methanol synthesis via CO2 hydrogenation. Compared with the CuCeTi ternary oxide catalyst and commercial CuZnAl catalyst, CuZnCeTi oxide catalysts presented an enhanced catalytic performance, showing a factor of 2 higher turnover frequency (TOF) value. The effects of chemical compositions were systematically studied. With increasing CuO content, the CO2 conversion first increased and then decreased, with the CuO content of 30 wt % being optimal. With increasing Zn/Cu molar ratio, the maximum CO2 conversion was reached at a Zn/Cu molar ratio of 1, while the maximum methanol yield was reached at a Zn/Cu ratio of 1.2. Further characterization revealed that the catalyst activity showed a good linear relationship with the amount of CO2 uptake over strong basic sites. The catalyst composition also affected the stability, and the catalyst with a Zn/Cu ratio of 2.0 was found to have the best stability.

Abstract:A Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst has been extensively studied in CO2 hydrogenation to methanol, where the methanol selectivity usually decreases with increasing CO2 conversion because of the thermodynamically oriented CO production. Herein, we found that the CO2 conversion and methanol selectivity over the Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst could be simultaneously improved through zirconia modulation (CZAZ). The structural characterizations show that the zirconia efficiently increases both the surface area and Cu dispersion on the catalyst. In the CO2-to-methanol transformation, it is found that the zirconia could significantly hinder the decomposition of the CH3O* intermediate to benefit its hydrogenation to methanol, a crucial step in this transformation. These features simultaneously optimized the CO2 conversion and methanol selectivity, giving methanol space-time productivity at 1376 g(MeOH)/(kg(cat)center dot h). In addition, the CZAZ catalyst was durable in a continuous test for 200 h over a wide temperature range of 200-250 degrees C, which is important for its potential application.
Promoting effect of titanium on Cu/γ-Al2O3 catalyst for CO2 hydrogenation

Abstract:This study reveals the promoting effect of titanium on Cu/γ-Al2O3 catalyst for the hydrogenation of CO2 by X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. The relationship between the area of metallic copper and the activity of methanol synthesis has also been investigated. The catalytic activity over Cu-Ti/γ-Al2O3 catalyst for CO2 hydrogenation is higher than that of Cu/γ-Al2O3. The adding of titanium is beneficial in enhancing the dispersion of the supported copper oxide and make the reduction behavior of Cu-Ti/γAl2O3 catalyst different from the individual supported copper oxide calalysts. For the CuO/γ-Al2O3 catalyst there are two reducible copper oxide species: α and β peaks are attributed to the reduction of highly dispersed copper oxide species and bulk CuO species respectively. For the Cu-Ti/γ-Al2O3 catalyst, four reduction peaks are observed. Two TPR peaks with lower temperatures (namely α1 and α2) have been attributed to the hydrogen uptake of nested oxygen ions and temptable oxygen ions, respectively. β1 and β2 peaks are attributed to the reduction of bulk CuO with different particle size of copper. XPS results reveal that there exists strong interaction between the copper oxide and titania which makes the binding energy of Cu(2P3/2) shift to higher value.
Mechanism of Methanol Synthesis from CO2 Hydrogenation over Cu/γ-Al2O3 Interface: Influences of Surface Hydroxylation

Abstract:The adsorption and hydrogenation of carbon dioxide on γ-Al2O3(110) surface-supported copper clusters of different sizes are investigated using density functional theory calculations. Our results show that the activation of CO2 is most obvious at the Cu/γ-Al2O3 interface containing the size-selected Cu4 cluster. It is interesting that the CO2 activation is more pronounced at the partially hydroxyl-covered interface. The catalytic mechanisms of CO2 conversion to methanol at the dry and hydroxylated Cu4/γ-Al2O3 interfaces via the formate route and the pathway initiated through the hydrogenation of carbon monoxide produced by the reverse water–gas shift reaction are further explored. On both interfaces, the formate pathway is identified as the preferred reaction pathway, in which the hydrogenation of HCOO to H2COO is the rate-limiting step (RLS). However, since the surface OH group can act as a hydrogen source in some elementary reactions, unlike the dry surface, the production of H2COOH species along the formate pathway is found at the hydroxylated interface. In addition, the introduction of OH at the interface leads to an increase in the kinetic barrier of the RLS, indicating that surface hydroxylation has a negative effect on the catalytic activity of CO2 conversion to CH3OH at the Cu/γ-Al2O3 interface.

Abstract:Innovative catalyst design and in-depth mechanism understanding are imperative for industrialization of CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol. Herein, Al-doped Cu/ZnO catalysts, Cu/Al-ZnO-x (x = 1/32, 1/16 and 1/8, denoting Al/Zn molar ratio), were creatively synthesized using MIL-53(Al) as Al sources and reactive templates. The Cu/Al-ZnO-1/16 catalyst exhibited the highest methanol production rate among the Cu/Al-ZnO-x catalysts, which was 1.93 times as active as the conventional Cu/Al-ZnO-1/16-C catalyst using Al(NO 3 ) 3 ·9H 2 O as Al source. Structural characterizations reveal that the use of MIL-53(Al) led to higher S BET , more uniform Al distribution, more abundant oxygen vacancies, more appropriate metal-support interactions and larger amount of medium basic sites. Mechanism studies demonstrate that Al doping would markedly induce oxygen vacancy formation on Cu-ZnO interfaces and thus significantly boost methanol synthesis activity. This work offers a facile approach to develop efficient methanol synthesis catalysts and provides new insights into the nature of Al promotion in Cu/ZnO-based catalysts.

Abstract:Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalysts have been widely applied as industrial catalysts for methanol synthesis from syngas, but suffers low activity for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. This study establishes highly active Cu catalysts through modulation of the composite of Al2O3 and ZrO2 in Cu/ZnO-based catalysts. The composition of Al2O3 and ZrO2 impacts the Cu dispersion, exposed surface area of Cu, the Cu0/(Cu0+Cu+) ratio and surface basicity. An appropriate content of Al2O3 and ZrO2 presents the higher Cu surface area, desirable ratio of Cu0/(Cu0+Cu+) and moderate-strong basic sites for effective CO2 adsorption/activation, giving rise to higher space-time yield of methanol (up to 648 gCH3OH·kgcat −1·h−1) than the commercial Cu catalyst. STY of methanol can be correlated with Cu surface area and Cu0/(Cu0+Cu+) ratio under the investigated conditions. The mechanistic analysis demonstrates that surface formate and methoxy species are the major intermediates. The methanol formation principally follows the formate-methoxy intermediate pathway.

Abstract:Hydrogenation of CO2 into methanol at low-temperature on Cu-based catalysts is of great significance, but remains challenging to enhance activity. In this paper, we report an inverse catalyst constructed with nano-ZrZnOx supported on Cu particles with outstanding methanol synthesis performance at 220 ℃, two times higher than that of commercial Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalysts under the same conditions. Detailed structure characterization and performance evaluation demonstrate that the ZrZnOx mixed oxide serves as the most active oxide-metal interface site for CO2 hydrogenation. The ZrZnOx/Cu inverse catalyst increases the weak and medium CO2 adsorption sites which are further demonstrated responsible to the methanol productivity. In situ DRIFTs studies reveal that the inverse interface accelerates the reduction of asymmetric formate intermediates and prevents the generation of CO. The combination of enhanced CO2 activation capability and accelerated hydrogenation rate of intermediates over the ZrZnOx/Cu inverse catalyst probably contribute to the remarkable methanol synthesis performance from CO2.
