Abstract:In this paper, two different normal basis multiplication algorithms for software implementation are proposed over GF(2n). The first algorithm is suitable for high complexity normal bases and the second algorithm is fast for type-I optimal normal bases and low complexity normal bases. The ANSI C source program is also included in this paper.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new normal basis multiplication algorithm for GF(2 n ). This algorithm can be used to design not only fast software algorithms but also low complexity bit-parallel multipliers in some GF(2 n )s. Especially, for some values of n that no Gaussian normal basis exists in GF(2 n ), i.e., 8|n, this algorithm provides an alternative way to construct low complexity normal basis multipliers. Two improvements on a recently proposed software normal basis multiplication algorithm are also presented. Time and memory complexities of these normal basis multiplication algorithms are compared with respect to software performance. It is shown that they have some specific behavior in different applications. For example, GF(2 571 ) is one of the five binary fields recommended by NIST for ECDSA (Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm) applications. In this field, our experiments show that the new algorithm is even faster than the polynomial basis Montgomery multiplication algorithm: 525s v. 819s.

Abstract:A new definition of the key function in GF(2n) is given. Based on this definition, a method to speed up software implementations of the normal basis multiplication is presented. It is also shown that the normal basis with maximum complexity can be used to design low complexity multipliers. In particular, it is shown that the circuit complexity of a type I optimal normal basis multiplier can be further reduced.

Abstract:Based on the divide-and-conquer technique, three bit-parallel normal bases multipliers are presented for GF(2(n)). The space complexity of one multiplier is about 3/4 of the smallest known normal bases multiplier, although it needs at most one more XOR gate delay.

Abstract:Based on the shifted polynomial basis (SPB), a high efficient bit-parallel multiplier for the field GF(2m) defined by an equally-spaced trinomial (EST) is proposed. The use of SPB significantly reduces time delay of the proposed multiplier and at the same time Karatsuba method is combined with SPB to decrease space complexity. As a result, with the same time complexity, approximately 3/4 gates of previous multipliers are used in the proposed multiplier.

Abstract:Normal basis is hardware-friendly to perform squaring operations over binary fields. It is very attractive in some applications, like elliptic curve cryptography over Koblitz curves. In this paper, a new algorithm is proposed to reduce the space complexity of Gaussian Normal Basis (GNB) multiplier over GF$(2^{163})$ and GF$(2^{40}9)$. As far as we know, by applying this method, the number of XOR gates needed for a bit-level SIPO GNB multiplier over GF$(2^{163})$ and GF$(2^{409})$ can be minimized. Also, it is a general methodology suitable for all binary fields that involve type -4 Gaussian Normal Basis.

Abstract:A new structure of bit-parallel Polynomial Basis (PB) multiplier is proposed, which is based on a fast modular reduction method. The method was recommended by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). It takes advantage of the characteristics of irreducible polynomial, i.e., the degree of the second item of irreducible polynomial is far less than the degree of the polynomial in the finite fields GF(2 m ). Deductions are made for a class of finite field in which trinomials are chosen as irreducible polynomials. Let the trinomial be x m + x h +1, where 1 ≤ k ≤ [m/1]. The proposed structure has shorter critical path than the best known one up to date, while the space requirement keeps the same. The structure is practical, especially in real time cryptographic applications.

Abstract:A new approach to subquadratic space complexity GF(2(n)) multipliers has been proposed recently. The corresponding algorithm for software implementations is developed. While its recursive implementation is as simple as that of the Karatsuba algorithm, it requires much less memory to store the look-up table. Therefore it is quite suitable for memory-constrained applications, for example smart cards.

Abstract:A new nonpipelined bit-parallel-shifted polynomial basis multiplier for GF(2n) is presented. For some irreducible trinomials, the space complexity of the multiplier matches the best results available in the literature, and its gate delay is equal to T A+lceillog2nrceilTX, where TA and TX are the delay of one two-input and and xor gates, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the gate delay bound TA+lceillog2nrceilTX is reached. For some irreducible pentanomials, its gate delay is equal to TA +(1+lceillog2nrceil)TX. NIST has recommended five binary fields for the elliptic curve digital signature algorithm applications: GF(2163), GF(2233), GF(2 283), GF(2409), and GF(2571), but no irreducible trinomials exist for three degrees, viz., 163, 283 and 571. For the three corresponding binary fields, we show that the gate delay of the proposed multiplier is TA+(1+lceillog2nrceil)TX. This result outperforms the previously known results

Abstract:In this paper, a fast hardware implementation of multiplicative inversion in GF(2m) using the optimal normal basis of type II is presented. The approach followed is based on the Sunar-Koc multiplier and the Itoh-Tsujii algorithm. Our design is able to compute multiplicative inversion in GF(2233) using only 26 clock cycles.

Abstract:Modular reduction is the basic operation of cryptographic systems. The Barrett's algorithm and Montgomery's algorithm are widely used nowadays and they are both based on pre-computation. In the field of elliptic curve cryptosystem (ECC) over GF(2m), the reduction polynomials recommended by SEC have few items and the degree of second item is much less than that of the first one. Making use of this characteristic, the paper presents a new method to accelerate modular reduction without pre-computation which speeds up modular reduction by 10-30 times over GF(2m) and speeds up ECC point multiplication by 40%-50%. Abstract:We show that the step “modulo the degree-$n$ field generating irreducible polynomial” in the classical definition of the $GF(2^{n})$ multiplication operation can be avoided. This leads to an alternative representation of the finite field multiplication operation. Combining this representation and the Chinese Remainder Theorem, we design bit-parallel $GF(2^{n})$ multipliers for irreducible trinomials $u^n+u^k+1$ on $GF(2)$ where $1 < k \\le n/2$ . For some values of $n$ , our architectures have the same time complexity as the fastest bit-parallel multipliers—the quadratic multipliers, but their space complexities are reduced. Take the special irreducible trinomial $u^{2k}+u^k+1$ for example, the space complexity of the proposed design is reduced by about $1/8$ , while the time complexity matches the best result. Our experimental results show that among the 539 values of $n$ such that $4< n < 1{,}000$ and $x^n+x^k+1$ is irreducible over $GF(2)$ for some $k$ in the range $1 < k \\le n/2$ , the proposed multipliers beat the current fastest parallel multipliers for 290 values of $n$ when $(n-1)/3 \\le k \\le n/2$ : they have the same time complexity, but the space complexities are reduced by $8.4$ percent on average.
On efficient normal bases over binary fields

Abstract:Binary field extensions are fundamental to many applications, such as multivariate public key cryptography, code-based cryptography, and error-correcting codes. Their implementation requires a foundation in number theory and algebraic geometry and necessitates the utilization of efficient bases. The continuous increase in the power of computation, and the design of new (quantum) computers increase the threat to the security of systems and impose increasingly demanding encryption standards with huge polynomial or extension degrees. For cryptographic purposes or other common implementations of finite fields arithmetic, it is essential to explore a wide range of implementations with diverse bases. Unlike some bases, polynomial and Gaussian normal bases are well-documented and widely employed. In this paper, we explore other forms of bases of $\mathbb{F}_{2^n}$ over $\mathbb{F}_2$ to demonstrate efficient implementation of operations within different ranges. To achieve this, we leverage results on fast computations and elliptic periods introduced by Couveignes and Lercier, and subsequently expanded upon by Ezome and Sall. This leads to the establishment of new tables for efficient computation over binary fields.

Finite Fields and Their Applications

Abstract:This paper surveys bit-parallel multipliers for finite field GF(2n) according to i) quadratic and subquadratic arithmetic complexities of the underlying algorithms, ii) various bases used for representing the field elements, and iii) design approaches that rely on polynomial and matrix operations. Techniques for constructing space- and time-efficient multipliers are reviewed, and complexities of recent quadratic and subquadratic multipliers are summarized. For quadratic multipliers, the emphasis is placed on polynomial bases and their generalization. Low-degree Karatsuba–Toom formulae and their multiplication complexities are considered primarily for the subquadratic multipliers.
