Abstract:Modular reduction is the basic operation of cryptographic systems. The Barrett's algorithm and Montgomery's algorithm are widely used nowadays and they are both based on pre-computation. In the field of elliptic curve cryptosystem (ECC) over GF(2m), the reduction polynomials recommended by SEC have few items and the degree of second item is much less than that of the first one. Making use of this characteristic, the paper presents a new method to accelerate modular reduction without pre-computation which speeds up modular reduction by 10-30 times over GF(2m) and speeds up ECC point multiplication by 40%-50%. Abstract:A new structure of bit-parallel Polynomial Basis (PB) multiplier is proposed, which is based on a fast modular reduction method. The method was recommended by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). It takes advantage of the characteristics of irreducible polynomial, i.e., the degree of the second item of irreducible polynomial is far less than the degree of the polynomial in the finite fields GF(2 m ). Deductions are made for a class of finite field in which trinomials are chosen as irreducible polynomials. Let the trinomial be x m + x h +1, where 1 ≤ k ≤ [m/1]. The proposed structure has shorter critical path than the best known one up to date, while the space requirement keeps the same. The structure is practical, especially in real time cryptographic applications.
A New Approach to Subquadratic Space Complexity Parallel Multipliers for Extended Binary Fields

Abstract:Based on Toeplitz matrix-vector products and coordinate transformation techniques, we present a new scheme for subquadratic space complexity parallel multiplication in GF(2^{n}) using the shifted polynomial basis. Both the space complexity and the asymptotic gate delay of the proposed multiplier are better than those of the best existing subquadratic space complexity parallel multipliers. For example, with n being a power of 2, the space complexity is about 8 percent better, while the asymptotic gate delay is about 33 percent better, respectively. Another advantage of the proposed matrix-vector product approach is that it can also be used to design subquadratic space complexity polynomial, dual, weakly dual, and triangular basis parallel multipliers. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that subquadratic space complexity parallel multipliers are proposed for dual, weakly dual, and triangular bases. A recursive design algorithm is also proposed for efficient construction of the proposed subquadratic space complexity multipliers. This design algorithm can be modified for the construction of most of the subquadratic space complexity multipliers previously reported in the literature.

Abstract:Based on the shifted polynomial basis (SPB), a high efficient bit-parallel multiplier for the field GF(2m) defined by an equally-spaced trinomial (EST) is proposed. The use of SPB significantly reduces time delay of the proposed multiplier and at the same time Karatsuba method is combined with SPB to decrease space complexity. As a result, with the same time complexity, approximately 3/4 gates of previous multipliers are used in the proposed multiplier.

Abstract:Binary field extensions are fundamental to many applications, such as multivariate public key cryptography, code-based cryptography, and error-correcting codes. Their implementation requires a foundation in number theory and algebraic geometry and necessitates the utilization of efficient bases. The continuous increase in the power of computation, and the design of new (quantum) computers increase the threat to the security of systems and impose increasingly demanding encryption standards with huge polynomial or extension degrees. For cryptographic purposes or other common implementations of finite fields arithmetic, it is essential to explore a wide range of implementations with diverse bases. Unlike some bases, polynomial and Gaussian normal bases are well-documented and widely employed. In this paper, we explore other forms of bases of $\mathbb{F}_{2^n}$ over $\mathbb{F}_2$ to demonstrate efficient implementation of operations within different ranges. To achieve this, we leverage results on fast computations and elliptic periods introduced by Couveignes and Lercier, and subsequently expanded upon by Ezome and Sall. This leads to the establishment of new tables for efficient computation over binary fields.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new normal basis multiplication algorithm for GF(2 n ). This algorithm can be used to design not only fast software algorithms but also low complexity bit-parallel multipliers in some GF(2 n )s. Especially, for some values of n that no Gaussian normal basis exists in GF(2 n ), i.e., 8|n, this algorithm provides an alternative way to construct low complexity normal basis multipliers. Two improvements on a recently proposed software normal basis multiplication algorithm are also presented. Time and memory complexities of these normal basis multiplication algorithms are compared with respect to software performance. It is shown that they have some specific behavior in different applications. For example, GF(2 571 ) is one of the five binary fields recommended by NIST for ECDSA (Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm) applications. In this field, our experiments show that the new algorithm is even faster than the polynomial basis Montgomery multiplication algorithm: 525s v. 819s.

Abstract:Shor's algorithm solves the elliptic curve discrete logarithm problem (ECDLP) in polynomial time. To optimize Shor's algorithm for binary elliptic curves, reducing the cost of binary field multiplication is essential because it is the most cost-critical arithmetic operation. In this paper, we propose Toffoli gate count-optimized, space-efficient (i.e., no ancilla qubits are used) quantum circuits for binary field ( ) multiplication. To achieve this, we leverage the Karatsuba-like formulae and demonstrate that its application can be implemented without the need for ancillary qubits. We optimize these circuits in terms of CNOT gate count and depth. Building upon the Karatsuba-like formulae, we develop a space-efficient CRT-based multiplication technique utilizing two types of out-of-place multiplication algorithms to reduce the CNOT gate count. Our quantum circuits exhibit an extremely low Toffoli gate count of , where represents the iterative logarithmic function that grows very slowly. When compared to recent Karatsuba-based space-efficient quantum circuit, our approach requires only (10–25 %) of the Toffoli gate count and Toffoli depth for cryptographic field sizes in the range of n = 233–571. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the first successful utilization of the Karatsuba-like formulae and CRT-based multiplication in quantum circuits.

Abstract:The multiplication is one of the most time-consuming and hardware-consuming operations in finite field for the applications of elliptic curve cryptography. In this paper, in order to reduce the complexities of multiplication, a new polynomial basis is proposed, which is generated by the irreducible trinomial and called modified polynomial basis (MPB). The modified polynomial basis multiplication can be transformed into the matrix-vector form. The obtained matrix satisfies the properties of Toeplitz matrix. According to the properties of Toeplitz matrix, a digit-serial multiplier over GF (2m) by irreducible trinomials is presented. From theoretical analysis, the proposed multiplier involves lower area complexity, less energy consumption than the other existing digit-serial multipliers. © 2017, Ubiquitous International. Finite Fields and Their Applications

Abstract:This paper surveys bit-parallel multipliers for finite field GF(2n) according to i) quadratic and subquadratic arithmetic complexities of the underlying algorithms, ii) various bases used for representing the field elements, and iii) design approaches that rely on polynomial and matrix operations. Techniques for constructing space- and time-efficient multipliers are reviewed, and complexities of recent quadratic and subquadratic multipliers are summarized. For quadratic multipliers, the emphasis is placed on polynomial bases and their generalization. Low-degree Karatsuba–Toom formulae and their multiplication complexities are considered primarily for the subquadratic multipliers.

Abstract:Normal basis is hardware-friendly to perform squaring operations over binary fields. It is very attractive in some applications, like elliptic curve cryptography over Koblitz curves. In this paper, a new algorithm is proposed to reduce the space complexity of Gaussian Normal Basis (GNB) multiplier over GF$(2^{163})$ and GF$(2^{40}9)$. As far as we know, by applying this method, the number of XOR gates needed for a bit-level SIPO GNB multiplier over GF$(2^{163})$ and GF$(2^{409})$ can be minimized. Also, it is a general methodology suitable for all binary fields that involve type -4 Gaussian Normal Basis.

Abstract:Besides Karatsuba's algorithm, optimal Toeplitz matrix-vector product (TMVP) formulae is another approach to design GF(2(n)) subquadratic multipliers. However, when GF(2(n)) elements are represented using a polynomial basis or its generalization-shifted polynomial basis-this approach is currently appliable only to fields GF(2(n)) generated by an irreducible trinomial or a special type of irreducible pentanomials, but not to a general irreducible pentanomial. The reason is that no transformation matrix, which transforms the Mastrovito matrix into a Toeplitz matrix, has been found. In this article, we propose such a transformation matrix and its inverse matrix for an arbitrary irreducible pentanomial.

Abstract:A new nonpipelined bit-parallel-shifted polynomial basis multiplier for GF(2n) is presented. For some irreducible trinomials, the space complexity of the multiplier matches the best results available in the literature, and its gate delay is equal to T A+lceillog2nrceilTX, where TA and TX are the delay of one two-input and and xor gates, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the gate delay bound TA+lceillog2nrceilTX is reached. For some irreducible pentanomials, its gate delay is equal to TA +(1+lceillog2nrceil)TX. NIST has recommended five binary fields for the elliptic curve digital signature algorithm applications: GF(2163), GF(2233), GF(2 283), GF(2409), and GF(2571), but no irreducible trinomials exist for three degrees, viz., 163, 283 and 571. For the three corresponding binary fields, we show that the gate delay of the proposed multiplier is TA+(1+lceillog2nrceil)TX. This result outperforms the previously known results
