Abstract:Based on the shifted polynomial basis (SPB), a high efficient bit-parallel multiplier for the field GF(2m) defined by an equally-spaced trinomial (EST) is proposed. The use of SPB significantly reduces time delay of the proposed multiplier and at the same time Karatsuba method is combined with SPB to decrease space complexity. As a result, with the same time complexity, approximately 3/4 gates of previous multipliers are used in the proposed multiplier.

Abstract:A new structure of bit-parallel Polynomial Basis (PB) multiplier is proposed, which is based on a fast modular reduction method. The method was recommended by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). It takes advantage of the characteristics of irreducible polynomial, i.e., the degree of the second item of irreducible polynomial is far less than the degree of the polynomial in the finite fields GF(2 m ). Deductions are made for a class of finite field in which trinomials are chosen as irreducible polynomials. Let the trinomial be x m + x h +1, where 1 ≤ k ≤ [m/1]. The proposed structure has shorter critical path than the best known one up to date, while the space requirement keeps the same. The structure is practical, especially in real time cryptographic applications.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new normal basis multiplication algorithm for GF(2 n ). This algorithm can be used to design not only fast software algorithms but also low complexity bit-parallel multipliers in some GF(2 n )s. Especially, for some values of n that no Gaussian normal basis exists in GF(2 n ), i.e., 8|n, this algorithm provides an alternative way to construct low complexity normal basis multipliers. Two improvements on a recently proposed software normal basis multiplication algorithm are also presented. Time and memory complexities of these normal basis multiplication algorithms are compared with respect to software performance. It is shown that they have some specific behavior in different applications. For example, GF(2 571 ) is one of the five binary fields recommended by NIST for ECDSA (Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm) applications. In this field, our experiments show that the new algorithm is even faster than the polynomial basis Montgomery multiplication algorithm: 525s v. 819s.

Abstract:We show that the step “modulo the degree-$n$ field generating irreducible polynomial” in the classical definition of the $GF(2^{n})$ multiplication operation can be avoided. This leads to an alternative representation of the finite field multiplication operation. Combining this representation and the Chinese Remainder Theorem, we design bit-parallel $GF(2^{n})$ multipliers for irreducible trinomials $u^n+u^k+1$ on $GF(2)$ where $1 < k \\le n/2$ . For some values of $n$ , our architectures have the same time complexity as the fastest bit-parallel multipliers—the quadratic multipliers, but their space complexities are reduced. Take the special irreducible trinomial $u^{2k}+u^k+1$ for example, the space complexity of the proposed design is reduced by about $1/8$ , while the time complexity matches the best result. Our experimental results show that among the 539 values of $n$ such that $4< n < 1{,}000$ and $x^n+x^k+1$ is irreducible over $GF(2)$ for some $k$ in the range $1 < k \\le n/2$ , the proposed multipliers beat the current fastest parallel multipliers for 290 values of $n$ when $(n-1)/3 \\le k \\le n/2$ : they have the same time complexity, but the space complexities are reduced by $8.4$ percent on average.

Abstract:Based on the divide-and-conquer technique, three bit-parallel normal bases multipliers are presented for GF(2(n)). The space complexity of one multiplier is about 3/4 of the smallest known normal bases multiplier, although it needs at most one more XOR gate delay.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel bit-parallel multiplier for finite field GF(2^m) defined by irreducible all-one polynomial (AOP) is proposed. We utilize a generalized Karatsuba algorithm (KA) to reduce the number of coefficient multiplications and the redundant representation to simplify polynomial modular reduction. Explicit formulae with respect to the space and time complexity of the proposed multiplier are given. By evaluating the asymptotic lower bound of the complexity, the selection of the generalized KA and decomposition of m are investigated to obtain the optimal result. Consequently, theoretical complexity analysis proved that our architecture requires even fewer logic gates than previous proposals, while it still maintains relatively low time delay. For a special class of GF(2^m) generated with AOPs, it even matches the best known multipliers found in the literatures.

Abstract:Based on a new representation of GF(2^n), we present two multipliers for all irreducible trinomials. Space complexities of the multipliers match the best results. Abstract:A new definition of the key function in GF(2n) is given. Based on this definition, a method to speed up software implementations of the normal basis multiplication is presented. It is also shown that the normal basis with maximum complexity can be used to design low complexity multipliers. In particular, it is shown that the circuit complexity of a type I optimal normal basis multiplier can be further reduced.

Abstract:A new approach to subquadratic space complexity GF(2(n)) multipliers has been proposed recently. The corresponding algorithm for software implementations is developed. While its recursive implementation is as simple as that of the Karatsuba algorithm, it requires much less memory to store the look-up table. Therefore it is quite suitable for memory-constrained applications, for example smart cards.

Abstract:By embedding a Toeplitz matrix-vector product (MVP) of dimension n into a circulant MVP of dimension [Formula: see text], where δ can be any nonnegative integer, we present a GF(2n) multiplication algorithm. This algorithm leads to a new redundant representation, and it has two merits: (1) The flexible choices of δ make it possible to select a proper N such that the multiplication operation in ring [Formula: see text] can be performed using some asymptotically faster algorithms, e.g. the Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT)-based multiplication algorithm; (2) The redundant degrees, which are defined as N/n, are smaller than those of most previous GF(2n) redundant representations, and in fact they are approximately equal to 2 for all applicable cases.

Abstract:The parallel multiplier architecture over Galois field GF(2~m) was proposed. The finite field multiplication requires two steps: polynomial multiplication and reduction modulo the irreducible f(x). The polynomial multiplicand and multiplicator are equally split into three sub-polynomials, respectively. The polynomial multiplication is performed by sub-polynomial multiplications and additions. When the degree m of the finite field is 500, compared to the traditional Mastrivito polynomial multiplication, it can reduce the number of the XOR gates by 33.1%, and that of the AND gates by 33.3%. To simplify reduction modulo, the special polynomials are used to generate finite field. The proposed multiplier architecture suits elliptic curve cryptosystems with large finite field.

Abstract:A new nonpipelined bit-parallel-shifted polynomial basis multiplier for GF(2n) is presented. For some irreducible trinomials, the space complexity of the multiplier matches the best results available in the literature, and its gate delay is equal to T A+lceillog2nrceilTX, where TA and TX are the delay of one two-input and and xor gates, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the gate delay bound TA+lceillog2nrceilTX is reached. For some irreducible pentanomials, its gate delay is equal to TA +(1+lceillog2nrceil)TX. NIST has recommended five binary fields for the elliptic curve digital signature algorithm applications: GF(2163), GF(2233), GF(2 283), GF(2409), and GF(2571), but no irreducible trinomials exist for three degrees, viz., 163, 283 and 571. For the three corresponding binary fields, we show that the gate delay of the proposed multiplier is TA+(1+lceillog2nrceil)TX. This result outperforms the previously known results

Abstract:We describe an efficient implementation of a hierarchy of algorithms for multiplication of dense matrices over the field with two elements (GF(2)). In particular we present our implementation -- in the M4RI library -- of Strassen-Winograd matrix multiplication and the "Method of the Four Russians" multiplication (M4RM) and compare it against other available implementations. Good performance is demonstrated on on AMD's Opteron and particulary good performance on Intel's Core 2 Duo. The open-source M4RI library is available stand-alone as well as part of the Sage mathematics software. In machine terms, addition in GF(2) is logical-XOR, and multiplication is logical-AND, thus a machine word of 64-bits allows one to operate on 64 elements of GF(2) in parallel: at most one CPU cycle for 64 parallel additions or multiplications. As such, element-wise operations over GF(2) are relatively cheap. In fact, in this paper, we conclude that the actual bottlenecks are memory reads and writes and issues of data locality. We present our empirical findings in relation to minimizing these and give an analysis thereof.

Abstract:Explicit formulae and complexities of bit-parallel GF(2n) squarers for a new class of irreducible pentanomials xn + xn-1 + xk + x + 1, where n is odd and 1 <; k <; (n - 1)/2 are presented. The squarer is based on the generalised polynomial basis of GF(2n). Its gate delay matches the best results, whereas its XOR gate complexity is n + 1, which is only about two thirds of the current best results.

Abstract: In this paper, we consider some hybrid Diophantine equations of addition and multiplication. We first improve a result on new Hilbert-Waring problem. Then we consider the equation \begin{equation} \begin{cases} A+B=C ABC=D^n \end{cases} \end{equation} where $A,B,C,D,n \in\ZZ_{+}$ and $n\geq3$, which may be regarded as a generalization of Fermat's equation $x^n+y^n=z^n$. When $\gcd(A,B,C)=1$, $(1)$ is equivalent to Fermat's equation, which means it has no positive integer solutions. We discuss several cases for $\gcd(A,B,C)=p^k$ where $p$ is an odd prime. In particular, for $k=1$ we prove that $(1)$ has no nonzero integer solutions when $n=3$ and we conjecture that it is also true for any prime $n>3$. Finally, we consider equation $(1)$ in quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{t})$ for $n=3$.

Abstract:Suppose that $p$ is an odd prime and $g>1$ is a primitive root modulo $p$. Let $M$ be a number field contained in the $p$-th cyclotomic field. Girstmair found a surprising relation between the relative class number of $M$ and the digits of $1/p$ in base $g$. In this paper, we consider an analogue of Girstmair's formula in function fields. Suppose that $P \in \mathbb{F}_q[T]$ is monic irreducible and $G \in \mathbb{F}_q[T]$ is a primitive root modulo $P$. Let $L$ be an extension field of $\mathbb{F}_q(T)$ contained in the $P$-th cyclotomic function field. The goal of this paper is to give relations between the plus and minus parts of the divisor class number of $L$ and the digits of $1/P$ in base $G$.
