From Theological Thinking to Dialectics: A Key Factor in the Development of Cheng Qianfan's Poetics

Abstract:During the ten-year period between the founding of the P.R. China and the beginning of the Anti-Rightist Campaign,Cheng Qianfan was evidently in the wake of mode of theological thinking. He,then,experienced painstaking but unproductive researches in poetics. In the Anti-Rightist Campaign,he was forced to reform through labor and had great difficulties for academic researches. Cheng Qianfan,however,backed up by the rich Chinese cultural and academic tradition,broke up the restraint of theological thinking mode and succeeded in making a fundamental change in poetics studies:from integrating the textual criticism with the literary criticism to integrating documentation with theory of literature,and from formal logic to dialectics. A solid foundation was thus laid for his reaching the tops of academic researches and education career in the post-Cultural-Revolution days. In a word,the change in Cheng Qianfan is neither any achievement of ideological reform,nor a direct consequence of studing Marxist theory shortly after 1949,but is the inevitable result of negating the ultra-left politics and breaking up the shackles of theological thinking right after the Anti-Rightist Campaign.The transition from theological thinking to dialectics is a key factor counting for the qualitative change in Cheng Qianfan's poetics so to hit its high. The ups and downs in Cheng Qianfan's poetics studies deserve our careful reflection.
