Abstract:Photovoltaic–thermal (PVT) technology is gaining popularity due to the diminishing availability of traditional fossil fuels and escalating environmental concerns. Enhancing the heat dissipation of PVT to improve its electrical and thermal performance remains a significant task. This study simulates the thermodynamic and heat transfer characteristics in multiple novel PVT structures by examining the impact of various factors such as collector materials, radiation intensity, mass flow rate, and inlet temperature. This work also identifies the optimal mass flow rate for locations with different solar radiation. The numerical results indicate that the electrical efficiency of a designed cylindrical structure has increased by 1.73% while the thermal efficiency has increased by 8.29%. Aluminum is identified as the most cost-effective material for the collector. The optimal mass flow rates in selected locations of Xining, Taiyuan, and Turpan are 0.36 kg/s, 0.35 kg/s, and 0.30 kg/s, respectively. The numerical results provide valuable insight into optimizing the design and operating conditions of PVT systems.

Modeling and Performance Optimization of the U-pipe Glass Evacuated Tube Solar Collector

Abstract:In this study, the heat transfer process of U-pipe glass evacuated tube collector is analysed by one-dimensional method, where a detailed fin model is developed with the effect of temperature difference between two legs of U-pipe taken into account. The thermal model is further verified with experimental data from literature, and the computational result matches good with the measurement data. Further, an optimization method is proposed to reduce the thermal resistance caused by air gap between the absorber tube and the aluminium fin. By adding a high emissivity coating on the fin surface, the thermal resistance of air gap per collector length is reduced to 0.18 (mK)/W and thermal performance of collector can be 2.6% higher after optimization. Study finds that the thermal efficiency improvement through this method increases with increase of collector working temperature and solar radiation intensity, which indicates that this method has high optimization potential in intermediate and high temperature application.

Abstract:The output power of the solar photovoltaic panel decreases as the operating temperature increases. The use of photovoltaic/photothermal (PV/T) collectors not only effectively cools the operating temperature of the battery, increases photovoltaic power, but also produces hot water. Therefore, the PV/T collector improves the annual utilization efficiency of solar energy, and can meet the user's demand for different energies. This paper builds an experimental platform to compare the PV/T collector photovoltaic/photothermal performance and experimental comparison with traditional PV. The results show that the PV/T collector has a thermal efficiency of 31.5% and a photovoltaic efficiency of 17.82% at a flow rate of 0.023 Kg/s to achieve high efficiency in solar energy utilization.

Abstract:In conventional parabolic trough collectors (PTCs), sunlight is concentrated at the bottom of the absorber tube, resulting in a significant circumferential temperature gradient across the absorber tube, heat loss and thermal deformation, which affects the safety and thermal performance of PTCs. In this study, a new receiver with homogenizer and spiral (RHS) is proposed, achieving the optical and thermal synergy to ameliorate the thermal deformation of the absorber tube and enhance thermal efficiency. A plane structure homogenizer is designed to improve uniformity of the concentrated solar flux of absorber tube through second reflection. In combination with the spiral, it improves the optical-thermal efficiency of the PTC by enhancing heat exchange between the fluid and the backlight side of the absorber tube. The performance of the collector is numerically studied by building a three-dimensional coupled light-thermal-structure model. The results show that the thermal deformation of the RHS is reduced by more than 96% and the optical-thermal efficiency is improved by 1.2%–0.63% compared with conventional receivers (CRs) under the same inlet temperature conditions. The proposed receiver is validated to be effective in reducing thermal deformation and improving optical-thermal efficiency.

Abstract:Five critical parameters may have influence on the thermal performance of a solar air collector with one pass: (1) heat transfer resistance in the airflow channel, (2) height of the stagnant air layer, (3) optical properties of the transparent cover, (4) emittance of the absorber plate and (5) conductive thermal resistance of the back plate. In order to show the actual effects of these parameters, six collectors, each was made by changing one critical parameter mentioned above, were tested under the same working conditions. Thermal efficiency was employed as the main indicator. Results show that decreasing heat transfer resistance in the airflow channel played the most significant role in improving thermal efficiency. Adjusting the height of the stagnant air layer and improving the optical properties of the transparent cover played the secondary role. Increasing the conductive thermal resistance of the back plate and decreasing the emittance of the absorber plate had the least impact. The results would be useful to guide or optimize solar air collector design.

Abstract:The latest development in the heat dissipation capability of helix traveling wave tube (TWT) slow-wave structure (SWS) was tentatively reviewed. The discussions centered on the impacts of various factors such as the materials of the components geometries of the installation rodsheat resistance of contacts and assembly techniques on the heat dissipation capability and on the newly-developed solutions for the technical problems involved. Emphasis was given to the high technologies available: including the novel assembly methods applications of advanced materials with high thermal conductivity and better heat dissipation capabilityincluding man-made diamond materials and the design and manufacturing considerations in fabrication of the helix TWT SWS. The development trends and possible improvement in the area was also briefly discussed.

Abstract:The performance of the hybrid photovoltaic (PV) module depends on its operating conditions (especially temperature). Only a small percentage of incoming solar radiation is converted into electricity, and the rest is converted into heat. This overheats the PV module and reduces its performance. This work presents the performance of photovoltaic-thermal (PV/T) solar collector with dual channels for different fluids. The PV/T solar collector's electrical and thermal characteristics like temperatures of the solar cell and outlet fluids, electric power generation efficiency and thermal power efficiency are analyzed through comparison of four PV/T collectors with different fluids. It is found that water-water cooled PV/T collector is the most efficient in both electrical and thermal performance. Water-water cooled PV/T collector can provide the most amount hot water. The temperature of water in air-water case is the highest. Air-air cooled PV/T collector may provide the most amount hot air which its temperature is the highest. It is also found that an increase in mass flow rate of water and the height between the upper pipe and the lower pipe leads to better overall efficiency in water-water cooled PV/T collector. Abstract:Background The solar air collectors involve exploring their design, efficiency, and performance attributes. Common challenges include addressing issues such as small convective heat transfer coefficients between the air and the absorber, which can result to higher absorber plate temperatures and heightened thermal losses. Through the incorporation of artificial roughness onto the collector plate with a suitable design, it is possible to disrupt the shear layer and improve the convective coefficient. Methods This study focuses on hydrodynamic and thermal analyses to identify optimal chicane shapes and arrangements, such as CTPrism, CRRec , and CR, planted on the bottom wall of a solar air collector. Thermo-hydraulic performances are investigated using comprehensive CFD simulations, validated by experimental data and comparing them to smooth ducts. Significant findings In this work, a novel hydrodynamic and thermal analysis is introduced, demonstrating that the utilization of (CTPrism ) shapes arranged in a staggered configuration leads to a significant enhancement of 68 % in heat transfer and 95 % in turbulent intensity. Consequently, there is an improvement in thermo-hydraulic performance, reaching up to 2.39, while still maintaining moderate friction losses.

Abstract:Nowadays, energy shortage and environment pollution is increasingly serious. As a kind of renewable energy, solar energy has bright development prospect. The solar collector with energy storage was studied combining finned solar collector with phase change material (PCM). In addition, rectangular ribs were used in the air passage to enhance the heat transfer. The dimension parameter of rectangular ribs was optimized and the heat transfer process of air and PCM in the collector was analyzed by numerical simulation and experiment. In simulation, three-dimensional model of collector with different fin parameters was built and effects of dimensionless height (h/H), width (w/W), spacing (p/P) and installation angle (phi) were analyzed. The simulation results concluded the best heat transfer performance of collector was in the rib parameters of h/H=0.8, w/W=0.1, p/P=0.1 and phi=45 degrees. What's more, a three-dimensional model of solar collector with energy storage was also established. The temperature changes of PCM and air were analyzed with air flow of 0 m(3)/h, 37.72 m(3)/h, 56.58 m(3)/h and 75.44 m(3)/h to obtain heat collecting efficiency of collector. In experiment, the average temperature of PCM, outlet air temperature and heat collecting efficiency with different air flows were analyzed and compared with simulation results to verify the accuracy of simulation. The air outlet temperature was measured with the process of solidification and exothermic of PCM when the collector was running at night. In addition, the energy storage time was shortened and heat collecting efficiency was reduced when collector was under adverse working conditions. The solar collector with energy storage could store solar energy on a sunny day and release the energy on the night or cloudy day, fulfilling the use of solar energy across time and weather. Abstract:The theoretical model of the heat transfer in the photovoltaic thermal (PV/T) collector with different parallel cooling channels is established to evaluate the effect of parallel cooling channels on the thermal performance of the PV/T collector. To design the structure of the parallel cooling channels, the influences of structural paremeters are discussed. The numerical results indicate that with the number of the subchannels of 10, the pressure drop of the cooling channels is the lowest. Meanwhile, the temperatures of the photovoltaic modules are low and evenly distributed. Moreover, the I-type configuration of the inlet and outlet is the best choice, since the pressure drop of the cooling channels is low and the thermal performance of the PV/T collector is excellent. With the increasing diameter ratio between the main channel and the subchannels, the temperature of the photovoltaic modules is decreasing and the more evenly distributed. Moreover, the figure of merit of the cooling channels with D/d = 4 could be 50% larger than that with D/d = 2.

Abstract:In this work, pebbles of higher specific heat than the conventional absorber materials like aluminium or copper are proposed as a absorber in the solar flat plate collector. The proposed collector are integrated into the building design and constructed with masonry. Tests were conducted by varying the operating parameters which influence its performance, like the flow rate of the heat-absorbing medium, and the tilt of the collector using both coated and uncoated pebbles. The maximum temperature difference that could be measured for a conventional absorber was approximately 8 °C for a flow rate of 0.6 L/min. While for a coated and uncoated absorber, it was 7 °C and 5.5 °C respectively. This difference decreased with an increase in flow rates from 0.6 L/min to 1.2 L/min. For all the flow rates, it was observed that the average difference in efficiency between the coated and the conventional absorber collector is 5.82 %, while the difference between the coated and uncoated absorber collector is 15.68 %. Thus, it is very much evident that by replacing the conventional absorber with the proposed coated pebble absorber, the overall loss in efficiency is just 5.82 %, but the advantages are enormous. Along with the experimental study, numerical analysis was also carried out with CFD modeling. The numerical results agreed well with experimental results with the least error. Therefore, CFD simulation can be further used to optimize the design of the collector.

Abstract:Solar photocatalytic Trombe wall (SPTW) is a technology that can help to improve the indoor environmental quality and simultaneously enhance solar energy utilization, which receives lots of attention recently. Nevertheless, current research predominantly emphasizes the heat and mass transfer analysis of a single envelope system, with limited exploration of energy and performance comparison of multi-physics systems. For this, flow, heat and mass transfer analysis of SPTW with four different types of collectors: SPTW with copper plate, SPTW with photovoltaic plate (PV-SPTW), SPTW with thermoelectric plate (TE-SPTW) and SPTW with hybrid PV-TE plate (PV-TE-SPTW), are theoretically proposed to reveal the energy flow distributions among these systems. Based on the coupled analysis, parameter characteristics have been conducted to investigate the effects of solar radiation intensity, system channel width and system channel height together with ambient temperature on the heating Q , purification CADR and power generation Z performance of various SPTWs. Furthermore, a comparison of the energy and exergy performance among these four systems is clarified through the energy, exergy flow and equivalent energy saving. From the obtained results, it can be indicated that the reverse flow has a strong impact on the performance of natural ventilation and further varies the indexes of Q , CADR and Z when the solar radiation intensity is inferior to a threshold value from 100 to 300 W/m 2 . With the changing channel height and width, the maximum Q and CADR are both appears in TE-SPTW system, respectively reaching by 4.64 MJ/h and 136.56 m 3 /h as the structure of 0.05 m channel width and 3.0 m channel height, which show 39.7 % and 5.9 % respectively compared to the SPTW model. Conducting energy and exergy analyses on the four systems reveal their remarkable potential, sacrificing a minimal 0.032 MJ or less in purification performance in exchange for substantial energy savings of at least 0.314 MJ. This work will establish a foundational contribution to advancing energy-efficient building technologies.

Abstract:The Parabolic trough collector (PTC) system combined with molten salt energy storage system has gathered increasing attention owing to its advantages of high operating temperature and stable power output. However, the substantial heat loss experienced by parabolic through receivers (PTR) under high temperatures imposes limitations on the thermal efficiency and power generation potential of the PTC system. In this study, a novel eccentric double-selective-coated parabolic trough receiver is proposed. The upper surface of the receiver is flattened to further reduce radiation heat loss. Various distances from collector focus are explored to determine the most suitable opening angle of secondary selective coating, ensuring the highest thermal efficiency. The results show that, although the eccentricity causes partial optical loss, the reduced upper surface area and the resultant larger secondary coating opening angle contribute to a significant reduction in heat loss and an improved thermal efficiency of the novel receiver. The thermal efficiency of the new absorber can be improved by up to 20.59 % (under direct normal irradiance of 600W/m 2 and a receiver surface temperature of 600 °C). Furthermore, the higher the emissivity and the lower the absorptivity of the solar selective coating, the better the performance of the novel absorber tube.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, a variable density topology optimization method is used to design a high thermal conductivity path structure for efficient heat dissipation. The temperature and stiffness in the module volume are taken as the objective function. Simulations are carried out to compare with a high-power electronics device heat dissipation. The heat dissipation performance (HDP) of structures optimized topologically is further enhanced through the use of auxiliary materials, including highly thermally conductive coating material and phase change material (PCM). The efficient heat dissipation of the constructed topology optimization model and the effectiveness of the proposed method are verified.

Abstract:In response to the problems of high mass and high thermal resistance in traditional cold plate collectors, the author proposes a shaped and efficient micro-channel collector structure design for non-normal temperature control scenarios such as high power, multiple heat sources, and highly non-uniform power density. The author conducted numerical and experimental studies on the laminar heat transfer in a highly efficient micro-channel shaped collector for non-normal temperature control scenarios such as high power, multiple heat sources, and highly non-uniform power density, the results show that: The relative deviation between the simulated and experimental values of the pressure drop of the micro-channel collector using perfluorotriethylamine as the working fluid is within -20%, and the relative deviation between the simulated and experimental values of the surface temperature is within +3?C, the predicted trend of the pressure drop and temperature field of the collector is in good agreement with the experimental values, indicating the feasibility of using numerical simulation methods for performance analysis and design optimization of 3-D printed micro-channel collectors. As the flow rate increases, the pressure drop of the collector increases approximately linearly, while the value increase of the total heat transfer coefficient gradually decreases, and increasing inlet temperature or heating power will reduce pressure drop of collector and increase total heat transfer coefficient. The influence of gravity on the pressure drop and total heat transfer coefficient of micro-channel collectors is less than 1. The straight through micro-channel collector has lower pressure drop and stronger heat transfer ability compared to the folded type collector.
