Abstract:More and more control elements are incorporated into a single system by the information technology such as internet of things.Consequently,the scale of a control system increases quickly,and the control specification becomes more and more complicated.Any logic mistake that violates a given control specification may lead to a serious industrial failure and even security issue.Besides,there is a"state space explosion"for discrete event systems.These make a challenge for designing and debugging programs running in programmable logic controllers(PLCs)or field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs).The supervisory control theory of discrete event systems is to implement a given complicated logic specification by formal methods. The specification such as interlock,sequence,mutual exclusion,and language is expressed by a Petri net or automata.It is in turn translated into codes that can be executed by a PLC or FPGA.This paper surveys these formal methods for synthesis of logical controller,which are to shorten the costed time for control programs,to ease the reuse of them,and to increase the safety and reliability of them.

Abstract:This paper Studied actual multi-axis controllers and summarized the algorithms and structural features of their hardw are system,proposed a FPGA(Field Programmable Gata Array)-based dual-axis coordinated motion controller of molding machine,analyzed data-sampling-interpolation-algorithm,asymmetric S-curve acceleration and deceleration planning algorithm,Pre-read multi-segment trajectory planning algorithm,and achieved the above algorithms in single FPGA.The experiments show ed that the indicators met the design requirements.The analysis of cost of the scheme show ed that it achieved the purpose of reducing the cost of devices and human.

Abstract:In view of the problems of large memory footprint and low lookup efficiency existing in the present software implementation of the EPA (Ethernet for plant automation) communication schedule algorithm, the paper proposes a hardware implementation method based on the field programmable gate array (FPGA). This method adopts a strategy of storing messages intensively and constructing communication schedule lists separately, and based on this, devises a parallel processing scheme for lookup of the communication schedule lists. The results of the test on a platform with a Altera Cyclone II FPGA as the main controller show that compared with the software implementation, this implementation method decreases the consumption of memory resources, enhances the message lookup efficiency by 9 times, and doubles the performance of communication.

Abstract:The reconfigurable CNC system plays an important role for the Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems. The relationship between Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems, Reconfigurable CNC system and open CNC system was analyzed to synthesize CNC system by the hardware and software mode. The focus is on a new application of Field Programmable Gates Array(FPGA) in Reconfiguralbe CNC system, which integrated Programmable Logical Device and Reconfigurable Hardware Technology. After the investigation of its possibility and economic feasibility, the future development of this system is predicted, so that CNC systems can be reconfigurated with this innovative method. An example of economical reconfigurable CNC system is provided to test its feasibility and availability.

Abstract:Considering the increasing use of information technology with established standards, such as TCP/IP and XML in modern industrial automation, we present a high cost performance solution with FPGA (field programmable gate array) implementation of a novel reliable real-time data transfer system based on EPA (Ethernet for plant automation) protocol and IEEE 1588 standard. This combination can provide more predictable and real-time communication between automation equipments and precise synchronization between devices. The designed EPA system has been verified on Xilinx Spartan3 XC3S1500 and it consumed 75% of the total slices. The experimental results show that the novel industrial control system achieves high synchronization precision and provides a 1.59-μs standard deviation between the master device and the slave ones. Such a real-time data transfer system is an excellent candidate for automation equipments which require precise synchronization based on Ethernet at a comparatively low price.

Abstract:Many processes require controllers with an instant response (e.g. motor control, CNC machines). A high-performance PLC can be constructed with use of programmable logic devices. A lack of custom synthesis tools disables the use of standard languages widely accepted by automation designers. The paper presents the systematic process of a PLC program synthesis to hardware structure. An input PLC program is given according to the IEC61131-3 standard. The synthesis process has been developed for implementation of a program described with the LD and SFC languages. The essential idea of synthesis process is obtaining a massively parallel operating hardware structure that significantly reduces response processing time. The PLC program is translated into originally developed dedicated graph structure that enables a wide range of optimizations. In the next step, it is mapped into a hardware structure. In order to reduce resource requirements, a strategy with resource sharing is shown, which is an original extension of general mapping concepts. Modern FPGAs are equipped with arithmetic cores dedicated for signal processing, inspiring the development of the original DSP48 block mapping strategy. It attempts to utilize all features of the block in the pipelined calculation model. The considerations are summarized with the implementation result compared against standard PLC implementation, a mutual comparison of general hardware mapping, and with the use of DSP48 units.

Abstract:Most1 FPGA applications in control systems are used for single devices and equipment, or auxiliary processing systems. Because FPGA operation has the characteristics of unchangeable operating logic, it possesses higher security and reliability than Programmable Logic Controller (PLC). The objects of the ground test and launch control system are much complex in space launch site, the FPGA-based controller can achieve higher usage requirements. On the basis of analyzing the model and working pattern of the control system, the architecture and the concrete implementation scheme are proposed to develop the FPGA-based core controller that is similar to PLC. The FPGA-based controller consists of General Logic Module (GLM), backplane and Rear Transport Module (RTM). GLM consists of three parts. The first part is FPGA chip composed of two functions, i.e. one function mainly completes the general logic, and another is applied to implement the user custom functions. The second part is that universal carrier board connects FPGA chip to I/O interfaces. The third part is multiple types of I/O interfaces. The backplane provides slots for GLM connector cascaded multiple GLMs with the same or different functions. RTM serves as an interface between GLM and field input/output signals. A prototype controller has been developed according to the proposed architecture. It has reached the corresponding technical specifications and verified the feasibility of the technical scheme in the paper.

Abstract:The serial ports must be expanded when the flight controlling computer communicates with exterior devices by multi-serial communi-cation,with the characteristic of too many pins and big figure,usual Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter(UART) chip makes the circuit large and high-consumed.Aiming at these problems,this paper chooses a Field Programmable Gate Array(FPGA) chip,programming with verilog HDL,designs and integrates ten UART cells,data-receive controller,data-send controller and dual-port Random Access Memory(RAM),achieves ten channels of serial communication of the flight controlling computer,and manages to make the circuit much simpler.It is confirmed that the design scheme is correct by simulating and test the design result with ISE9.1i.

This paper presents a robust approach to design and implement PLC-based embedded systems. Timed automata are used to model the controller and its environment. We validate the design model with resort to model checking techniques. We propose an algorithm to generate PLC code from timed automata and implement this algorithm with a prototype tool. This method can condense the developing process and guarantee the correctness of PLC programs. A case study demonstrates the effectiveness of the method.

Abstract:PLC technology in a modern industrial control is widely used, but the domestic PLC technology development is still very weak. This paper analyzes the technical shortcomings of traditional PLC,studied and designed a programmable motion controller with their own intellectual property , elaborated on the new programmable motion controller and the principle of hardware and software components, specially focus on a major hardware module circuit structure, the specific structure and introduced the software is a major Flow chart. Practice has proved that this controller design is rich in resources, and powerful, reliable performance, and low cost, fully applied poor environment occasions, with a broad market prospect.

Abstract:In this work, we present an industrial cold walled Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) system, which can be controlled by either a traditional programmable logic controller (PLC) system or a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) prototyping board. This work presents an FPGA controlled system that takes ladder diagram (LD) control for a PLC and converts this control to Verilog HDL and programs an FPGA such that the FPGA prototyping board is used to control a real industrial application. We explore this approach since FPGA implementation of LD control could significantly reduce the cost of implementing these controllers with other potential advantages such as the improved granularity of timing control from milliseconds to nanoseconds, additional available pins for inputs and outputs far exceeding that of microprocessors, and lower power consumption for control. In this work, we provide details and descriptions of our industrial system (ALD), the LD control of this system and its implementation, our software flow to convert LDs to Verilog HDL, and our FPGA prototype board design to replace the existing electronic controller. We show how our LD-Verilog HDL converter in conjunction with FPGAs matches a PLC and demonstrate some of the benefits of using an FPGA.

Abstract:Due to the large number of pulse width modulation(PWM) channels required in high-power multiphase variable speed drives and their synchronization problems,a multi-PWM generator based on PWM IP(Intellectual Property) core using building block approach was proposed.The multi-PWM gen-erator with the same time base and independent control registers realized synchronization of PWM signals and different modulation strategies.Due to the hardware parallelism of Field Programmable Gate Array(FPGA),the high-performance triangular carrier generator and high-reliability fault protection were real-ized.Based on a digital experimental platform controlled by Digital Signal Processor(DSP) and FPGA,a universal multiphase voltage source inverter(VSI) was constructed,and the variable frequency variable voltage(VVVF) control strategy based on sinusoidal PWM(SPWM) was accomplished on a nine phase induction machine.The experiment results show that the application of FPGA in high-power multiphase variable speed drives benefits from its universalityf,lexibility and high reliability.

Abstract:As FPGA's is becoming larger,the scablilty,reusability,power consumption issue of the programming/downloading circuit gets more complex.A hierarchy and modular custom circuit of programming/downloading is proposed:new hierarchy addresses LeftE/RigtE are used,column address and frame address are decoupled,wordlinebitline controllers are designed to be reusable.The design makes the programming/downloading circuit easy to expand and reuse with reducing power consumption of wordline controller by 46.6%and bitline controller by 49.6%,at the cost of increasing WL controller and BL controller circuits area by only 0.6%and 0.1%.

Abstract:Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) are widely used in industry. PLC systems are reactive systems which run cyclically. In each cycle, the system state is checked and the program is executed once to determine the system behavior for a single cycle. Development of PLC systems conventionally follows the V-model, but increasing demand for efficiency and reliability requires a new rigorous and rapid design flow. In this paper, we propose a component-based formal modeling and synthesis method for cyclic execution platforms and apply it to PLC. Our method consists of three main phases: modeling, verification and code synthesis. In the modeling phase, the BIP (Behavior–Interaction–Priority) framework which is flexible and expressive is used as the modeling language. Real-time behavior, which is intensely concerned in PLC systems, can be modeled as well. In the verification phase, the system model is translated to timed automata and checked by Uppaal. Verification helps to ensure correctness of the model and further increases reliability of the implementation. In the code synthesis phase, the software part of the system model is extracted and synthesized to cyclic code. Although the PLC software runs cyclically, the software model is not necessarily given in a cyclic manner. We propose an algorithm which can generate high-performance cyclic code from a model which describes the business work-flow. This feature significantly simplifies program development. A set of tools is implemented to support our design flow and they are applied to an industrial case study for a PLC system that controls dozens of physical devices in a huge palace.
