Abstract:Ever since the beginning of the 20th century,the Japanese Buddhist scholars have carried out thorough examination of the general picture,the translators and the doubtful authenticity of the Chinese version of the Buddhist scriptures,including the Eastern Han's Buddhist scriptures.Erich Zürcher,a famous Dutch sinologist,writes a broad outline of the linguistic characteristics of the Eastern Han's Buddhist trans-lation,gives a clear exposition of the translation terminology and style of the Chinese version of the Buddhist scriptures in the different stages of translation,and provides a list of the translated works of the Eastern Han's Buddhist scriptures based on textual research.
AN ESSAY IN COMPARATIVE LITERARY ONOMASTICS BASED ON POLISH AND RUSSIAN BIBLIONYMS

Abstract:The article deals with some Polish biblionyms which are translations of the titles of works of Russian and world fiction. The article also examines the Polish nominations of some characters of Russian and Western European literature. Polish biblionyms are compared with Russian originals and with equivalent Russian titles of works of foreign literature. The types of transformation that Russian original titles undergo when translating them into Polish, as well as the differences between Polish and Russian biblionyms, which are translations of the titles of the same works of foreign literature, are analyzed. Among the transformations extensions, transpositions, reductions, grammatical, derivational and syntactic transformations are distinguished. Several types of transformations can be represented in one Polish biblionym (for example, transposition and extension of the abbreviation into the phrase in the Polish translation of the title of I. Babel’s Конармия as Armia konna. Transformation may be due to the differences between the compared languages (for example, the usual, with some exeptions, postpositive place of the adjective attribute in Polish, in contrast to the Russian language, requires a transposition in Polish translations of such titles of A.S. Pushkin’s works as Медный всадник - Polish Jeździec miedziany, Каменный гость - Polish Gość kamienny, Пиковая дама - Polish Dama pikowa. The transformation may also depend on the intentions and preferences of the translator (in particular, the choice of one of the synonyms existing in the Polish language - cf. variants Dom z facjatą and Dom z attyką for the title of a story by A.P. Chekhov Дом с мезонином, or options Dół and Wykop for the title of A. Platonov’s work Котлован. In some cases, the Polish biblionyms reflect the translator’s desire to bring them closer to the title of the original (cf. the translation of A.P. Chekhov’s story title Мальчики as Malcy in the presence of a synonym chłopcy or the use of the Polish word identical to the Czech lexeme wojak and not żołnierz in the title of J. Hašek’s novel about the adventures of Schweik. The replacement of the title of the original or its transformation may be associated with the desire to reveal the content of the work (cf. the translation of the title of the play by A.N. Ostrovsky Доходное место as Łapownicy specifying the source of income for a number of characters - bribes) or give the biblionym a more generalized, symbolic character (cf. replacing the prepositional-case construction with the nominative case form in the title of A.P. Chekhov’s В овраге - Polish Wąwóz). Comparison of Polish biblionyms with Russian original and translated titles of literary works shows the need to compile a dictionary of similar biblionyms, focused on Russianspeaking students studying the Polish language.

Abstract:Mikhaíl Bulgakov's"black mass"reproduces Goethe's pattern of"Witches'Sabbath"in Faust.Although Dmitry Merezhkovsky and Valery Bryusov have also inherited this pattern,Bulgakov is by far the most prominent writer in terms of Goethe's impact under which the narrative scale is designed and plays an important role.His inheritance and transformation of Goethe's tradition is also the most adequate.His"black mass"is a parody closely linked to the literary canon and manifests rich streaks of a personalized mythopoesis.Nearly all the traditional"carnival"elements are adopted in his work,while erotic elements are removed and rejected.In other words,the author has managed to contain crude and vulgar descriptions,and to achieve an apotheosis of the characters who would otherwise be devilish,thus infusing a noble quality into the traditional mode.

Abstract:The article is devoted to the problem of interrelation between spiritual and secular principles in the history of Russian literature, which is topical for modern Russian literary studies and which is revealed on the example of studying pilgrimage literature, including Siberian authors. The practice of pilgrimage journeys to the Holy Land and their descriptions became common among Siberians only in the late 19th century in connection with the opening of the Palestine Society and its regional branches in Russia. However, at the level of images and motifs, pilgrimage travel appears in Siberian travel prose much earlier and enriches its traditional genres — missionary and bishop’s journals and diaries. This thesis is proven in the article using the example of the travel diaries of Bishop Gerasim of Astrakhan and Enotayevsk (1809–1880), in his youth Irkutsk priest Georgii Dobroserdov. First published in the late 1870s, his diaries were written in the 1830s–40s, during the heyday of the genre of the pilgrimage literary journey in the works of D. V. Dashkov, A. N. Muravyov, A. S. Norov and others. Dobroserdov’s diaries are not only close to these works chronologically, but are also similar stylistically: they combine the image of a Christian pilgrim with that of a sensitive sentimental traveller. At the same time, both sentimental and pilgrimage beginnings are forms of artistic generalisation deliberately introduced by the author in texts of a different genre nature — a missionary journal and a diary of a private journey, which originally had no pilgrimage purposes. The sentimental poetics gives the diaries their artistry, and the realisation of the pilgrimage plot gives them the status of a work of spiritual literature. The ideological and stylistic proximity between the works of secular writers and representatives of the clergy, such as A. N. Muravyev and Bishop Gerasim, representatives of central Russia and Siberia, testifies to the unity of the pre-revolutionary historical and literary process.
THE BIBLICAL INTERTEXTUALITY OF THE EPIGRAPH TO F. M. DOSTOEVSKY’S NOVEL “THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV”

Abstract:The problem of biblical citation posed in this article relates to a well-known field of research in Dostoevsky studies, in which there are outstanding achievements. A peculiar approach to the proposed topic is offered within the framework of this paper. The subject of the study is the epigraph to the novel “The Brothers Karamazov”. The first special feature of the interpretation of its biblical intertextuality is connected with the clarification of the multidimensional function of Dostoevsky’s introduction to the said novel. The three key “hermeneutic” motifs of “The Grand Inquisitor”, namely, Mistery, Miracle and Authority, are revealed in the author’s preface. They allow to see the complexity of the “prophecy,” a premonition that concerns the future of the novel, its main character and the reader's reception. The semanticization of time within the limits of “pre-” and “post-” determines the interpretation of the biblical intertextuality of the epigraph, the idea of which in its first discursive appearance is integrated with the author’s preface, rather than with the novel in its entirety. The “pre-word” and “post-word” in the epigraph also act as metatextual motifs, due to the fact that not only certain passages from the New Testament are parallelized in the biblical intertextual space, but they are also linked with the Old Testament. The second characteristic feature of understanding the epigraph’s biblical citation is the unification of different components of the created intertextual space. The main object of study is the motif of word; a wide range of its semantics is examined, i.e., in the context of adoring praise and glorification, in the light of successive mutual transformations of auditory and visual elements of communication, perception of the world and shifts of subjects, in the perspective of the chronotopic systematicity of prophecy, in the projection of the word on the time axis as the first and repeated word (in the “pre” and “post” positions). The aspects of initiation, mediation and continuation of the word, as well as the problem of changing the status of primacy and secondariness, are emphasized in the interpretation of time. As a result, the biblical intertextuality in the epigraph, together with the author’s preface, lead to the ontologization of time both in the personal plot (a person’s inner growth) and in the metaphysical (faith-related) meaning, and, not least, in Dostoevsky’s conceptualization of textual self-reflexivity in the Bible.

Abstract:This article examines in detail Maria Shkapskayas poetry book Tsa-Tsa- Tsa (1923) and its handwritten genesis. It explains the role and significance of ancient Chinese poetry for this literary piece of work. The problem is to attribute the texts that make up the book and find out their translated or stylized basis. The general thesis is that all the poetic texts of the book are translations: the names of Tao-Yuan-Ming, Du Fu, and Bo-Juyi indicated by Shkapskaya in the manuscripts are reported. One of the texts in the book is attributed as the Sixth Poem from the Shi ju gu shi ( Nineteen Ancient Poems ). The removal of the names of Chinese authors (not only in the book published in 1923 but also in the manuscript of 1921) and the alignment of the thematic word series silk, crane, thousand, spring that organize the book into a single text indicate a tendency to blur the border of the own-alien text (even though the book was treated by the author as translation from the Chinese, in autobiographies and correspondence). This trend leads to the appearance of a central artistic image of the book (it is a feature of M. Shkapskayas poetic books). It is the image of a lonely, longing woman. The mention of the spinning wheel connects this image with the popular (especially in Western European literature) image of Gretchen. This way the poetry book Tsa-Tsa-Tsa goes beyond the narrowly translated work and reveals some features of chronologically later literary trends (such as postmodernism and metapoesis).
The reception of Chinese Culture and Reflection of the Idea of “Worldliness” in V. Pereleshin’s Poetry

Abstract:The reception of Chinese culture in the works of V.F. Pereleshin (V.F. Salatko-Petrishche) (1913–1992), a representative of the Russian Far Eastern abroad, has not yet been studied enough in terms of reflecting the idea of “universality”. It is important for understanding Pereleshin's “conservative poetics” and his ambivalent attitude to the country of residence and the Homeland. Using the comparative historical method, transnational theory and imagology, the poems created by the poet not only in China, but also in Brazil are considered. It is shown that the evolution of Pereleshin's perception of Chinese culture not only reveals the poet's desire to master the “other” cultural space, but also correlates with the formation of his transnational consciousness. The motif of creation and discovery of the world, the motif of universality and all-humanity, which was the historiosophical idea of all Russian literature of the XIX century, shine through Chinese themes within the framework of the Russian literary canon. It is argued that Pereleshin's appeal to the eastern type of spirituality determines the development of “Russian responsiveness” in the works of the Brazilian period and reflection on the new identity of a person living on the edge of two worlds. It is concluded that the motif of the “eternal wanderer” opened up new opportunities for the poet to preserve “Russianness”, at the same time going beyond mononationality due to the transistorical and metaphysical expansion of the boundaries of poetic consciousness.
On the Issue of the Reception of Chinese "Strange Stories" in Russian Literature

Abstract:The article examines the influence of images, in particular, of a fox, from the works Liao Zhai’s Stories about the Extraordinary by Pu Songlin and Notes on the Search for Spirits by Gan Bao on modern Russian prose. The research material was the collections of Pu Songlin Liao Zhai’s Stories about the Extraordinary and Gan Bao Notes on the Search for Spirits in Russian translations. The study uses an interpretation technique involving reliance on contexts, methods of comparative and comparative analysis, and a phenomenological approach. The article presents an overview of the century-old history of translations of Pu Songlin’s novellas and Gan Bao’s stories into Russian. Based on the works by V. Pelevin, A. Nikolashina, M. Uspensky, the degree of influence of images from Chinese classical literature on Russian prose is determined. Most often, the image of werewolf foxes is borrowed, which is endowed in the recipient texts with recognizable qualities from the source – beauty, wisdom, passion, devotion, independence. At the same time, such heroines undergo personal changes during the development of the plot, as, for example, in the novel by V. Pelevin, without remaining in the static canonical framework. The poor monk in the story by M. Uspensky also possesses "magical" abilities and knowledge in Eastern philosophy. The very atmosphere of the "magical", "strange" as a special technique allows writers to highlight topical issues of our time in a special language. The results of this study reflect the process of adaptation of Chinese "strange stories" in Russian literature, first as original works in translation, then as donor texts for Russian writers. The methodological approach used in the work can be applied to further study the reception of Pu Songlin’s and Gan Bao’s creativity in Russian literature, as well as the influence and adaptation of other works of Chinese classics.
Mount Tsukuba cult: Specifics of the ritual and ancient Japanese poetry

Abstract:The study aims to utilize a broad mythological-poetic material to determine the depth and specific manner in which ancient Japanese poetry reflected traditional beliefs about the fertility cult and whether there was a gradual poetic reinterpretation of this cult. The scientific novelty lies in a comprehensive examination of the genesis of the Mount Tsukuba cult, exemplified by the “utagaki” ritual, its reflection in the ancient poetry of the “Man'yōshū” anthology and the transformation of the perception of this cult in ancient Japanese lyrical poetry. For the first time, new descriptions of episodes from the ancient ritual are introduced into scholarly discourse and all fragmented information about this ritual from various ancient sources is compiled into a unified system. The paper explores the ritual within the context of ancient lyrical works that reflected the societal moral and ethical codes of that time. Through specific poetic examples, the original primacy of the fertility idea is demonstrated, illustrating how such ideas gradually intertwined with aesthetic views. The study notes that the ancient fertility ritual, documented in texts from the 8th century as a common practice, gradually acquired new characteristics in the poetic tradition that did not reflect the essence of the ritual. The ritual itself and its place of enactment gradually transformed into a poetic object of romantic love, indicating a reinterpretation of the Mount Tsukuba cult associated with this ritual.

Abstract:Abstract The present article explores questions about the composition, performance, circulation, and transmission of early Chinese poetry by examining a small number of poems from the received Mao shi and their counterparts in recently discovered manuscripts. Starting from a close examination of the poem “Xi shuai” (“Cricket”), the essay briefly discusses the problems we face in dealing with looted manuscripts before advancing toward rethinking the patterns of early Chinese poetic composition and transmission. Instead of taking individual poems as discrete, reified objects in the form we encounter them in the Mao shi , it is suggested to read them as particular instantiations of circumscribed repertoires where the individual poetic text is but one of many realizations of a shared body of ideas and expressions. This analysis is informed by the examination of both manuscript texts and the received literature, but also by comparative perspectives gained from both medieval Chinese literature and other ancient and medieval literary traditions. In emphasizing the formation of poetry as a continuous process, it leaves behind notions of “the original text,” authorship, and the moment of “original composition”—notions that held no prominence in the early Chinese literary tradition before the empire.

“I Superimposed my Patterns on Someone Else’s Basis”: Oriental Genesis of Ivan Franko’s Legend Arot and Marot

Abstract:The article analyzes the oriental interests of Ivan Franko as a scientist, historian, translator, writer, which determined the main feature of his artistic creativity – intertextuality. Franko’s collection of poems My Emerald (My Izmarahd) is an example of such intertextuality. In this collection, the author organically combined the influences of Eastern and Western cultures, borrowed wandering plots and images, adapting them to the spiritual and aesthetic features of national literature. The article is devoted to a detailed analysis of one of the works of this collection – the legend Arot and Marot. In particular, the intertextual genesis of the plot, genre nature, image system, versification and moral and ethical intentionality are considered. Based on research, the article finds that the legend of Arot and Marot is based on various sources of ancient wandering plot about fallen angels, which are recognizable biblical, including apocryphal and oriental influences. Thus, possible prototexts of this legend were found in the Koran (Qur’an), Jewish midrash, a Persian source, apocryphal texts, including the Book of Enoch. In fact, in his legend, Franko does not deviate from the protoplot of the fallen angels, retaining the same images-symbols (angels, God, woman, secret word, Babylon, chains, moat, wine, star) and anthroponyms (Arot, Marot, Astarte), as well as the main plot construct – the ascent of angels to earth, testing by woman and wine, fair punishment in the Babylonian moat. In Franko’s legend, the images of sinful angels sarcastically expose the true nature of the entire penitentiary system – a public court governed by completely immoral, selfish, impudent, arbitrary judges. The article also focuses on the analysis of etymology, symbolism, intertextuality and diversity of the main characters and images of the legend: Arot and Marot, Astarte, Babylon. Different versions of this name are marked by oriental influences. In the ideological paradigm of the legend, the categories of the verbal, the sacrum of the “secret word”, which opens a person’s ability to draw closer to God and become God’s chosen one, are given special significance.

Abstract:The paper explores the structure of Mykhailo Orest’s poetry, delving into its main elements such as concepts of time, forest, silence, and word, as well as the motives of eschatologism and reincarnation. It focuses on the ideological and aesthetic originality of Orest’s poetry, examining his views on the nature of language and the essence of art. The distinctive feature of Orest’s poetry is a metaphor of time that comprises various philosophical meanings, including the eschatological understanding of time as “the world of the night,” the era of “the departure of God,” and “the end of things” as opposed to the concept of “the eternal day.” Orest’s eschatological poetics is rooted in medieval imagery and biblical metaphors. His poetic vision of the Apocalypse combines motives and images of diverse meanings and origins. Orest’s pantheism is seen as growing from romantic aesthetics, primarily the works of German romantics. The poet’s pantheistic ideas find expressive reflection through the cult of the forest, the symbolism of trees, particularly the archetype of the world tree. They are also related to the myth of birth and death, interpreted in Orest’s poetry, and the motive of metamorphosis. Medieval mythology takes a special place in Orest’s poetic world. In particular, the poet reinterprets the myths of Grail, Parsifal, Lohengrin, and Tannhäuser. The creative thought of Mykhailo Orest was constantly in search — a romantic inclination towards the irrational to a conscious interest in the world of things and the establishment of a complex system of relationship with it.

Abstract:. The article examines the semantics of the image of a book in the short stories of V. A. Nikiforov-Volgin and his short novel “The Road Staff.” The author, as the bearer of the Orthodox worldview, relies on the tradition of ancient Russian literature, whose ideological foundation was the Holy Scripture. The book appears in the works of the writer precisely as a sacred image: the Bible or its part — the Gospel — a collection of liturgical texts, a patristic creation. Readings from these books are included in the context of episodes related to the divine service or the pious home life of the characters of V. A. Nikiforov-Volgin. The book also acts as a source of comprehension of the beauty of the Church Slavonic word. In addition, in the artistic consciousness of the prose writer, the image of a book is embodied in a metaphorical way (the short story “Love is the Book of God”) as a sign of the character’s introduction to the spiritual world, his inner transformation. In the short story “The Ancient Book,” the spiritual history of both an individual family and an entire country is transmitted through notes left in the Bible: from former piety to neglect and blasphemy (in Soviet times). In the rosary texts of V. A. Nikiforov-Volgin, who describe the life already in post-revolutionary Russia, there is hope for its coming spiritual revival, which is associated, in particular, with the image of the Gospel. It and other items required for the performance of divine services and Sacraments are carried by priests traveling along Russian roads. The Gospel word in the short story “The Sun is playing” turns an atheist into a believing Christian in the process of reading the sacred text. In the works of V. A. Nikiforov-Volgin a book is one of the ways to God, giving comfort to the heart.

Abstract:RELEVANCE. The outstanding Russian poet Gavriil Romanovich Derzhavin is one of the few authors who, in his artistic work, theologically comprehended human existence, man’s place in the world and his relationship to the Creator and Creator of the world. The object of study in the article is the spiritual poetry of G.R. Derzhavin; The subject of the study is the poet’s religious ideas about man and his relationship with God and the world around him, reflected in the genre of spiritual ode. The purpose of the study is to identify the features of the expression of the Orthodox worldview of G.R. Derzhavin in episodes of his biography and poetic creativity using the example of a spiritual ode. MATERIALS AND METHODS. In accordance with the interdisciplinary nature of the research, the author used a combination of philological, historical and theological scientific methods, the most important of which were historical-biographical, intertextual and hermeneutic. RESULT AND DISCUSSION. The analysis of G.R. Derzhavin’s biographical facts and the memoirs of his contemporaries made it possible to characterize the poet as a person deeply rooted in the Orthodox faith striving to get aware of Divine truths, as well as to convey the highest moral law to a wide circle of his readers through verbal creativity. A review of works written in the genre of spiritual odes and based on a number of psalms, as well as a theological and philological analysis of the ode “God” made it possible to identify semantic and ideological connections of the author’s worldview with the dogmatic and anthropological teaching of the Orthodox Church. By revealing the theological content of the lexemes “slave” – “king”, “worm” – “God”, the author of the article resolves the apparent antinomy and gives an interpretation of these words from the point of view of Orthodox anthropology. CONCLUSION. As a result of the research, the author comes to the conclusion that the pinnacle of G.R. Derzhavin’s poetic creativity is the ode “God”, which fully reveals the features of the poet’s Orthodox worldview, in particular, its anthropological and soteriological aspects. The main theme of the ode is the greatness of God, in whom man is called to believe, who he must constantly thank, humbly and lovingly magnify and glorify, treading in the steps of King David, the Old Testament psalmist.
On the artistic singularity of the play by A.N. Ostrovsky “The Snow Maiden” in the context of the mythopoetic worldview

Abstract:The work is devoted to the character and contextual levels analysis of A.N. Ostrovsky’s play “The Snow Maiden”. The Berendey country as the embodiment of the pagan world is not only a place for the major events development, but it also symbolizes a special era in Russian history: the contact of two mutually exclusive principles – monotheism and polytheism. Evidences of these principles are the gospel parallels presented by A.N. Ostrovsky through a love sense, which the in-habitants of the Berendey country interpret in a pagan, but not in the Orthodox aspect. Using syn-thesis and analogy, which are the leading research methods of this work, it is possible to prove the contextual closeness of Snow Maiden and Mizgir, characters, originally isolated from the society of the Berendey country, and also to identify the specifics of application of the grotesque, the main literary device used by A.N. Ostrovsky. It is proved that A.N. Ostrovsky’s play is close to V. Hugo’s novel “Notre Dame de Paris” as a work where the grotesque seriously determines the author’s intention. The idea of the play is also analyzed in the format of continuity, as evidenced by the parallelism between “The Snow Maiden” and “Thunderstorm” – in these works the characters sometimes have similar formulations, that is why typification concept analysis is seems acceptable, which allows to analyze the characters in the context of the theory of K.G. Jung’s archetypes. Therefore, the considered task of this work is searching for bringing together contextual beginnings and analysis of the play’s chronotope – system-forming aspects that allow us to characterize the work not only as an extravaganza, but also as a text that occupies a special place in the playwright’s creative heritage. This research will be of great interest to everyone who studies the work of A.N. Ostrovsky in the format of literary studies, as well to researchers of pagan and orthodox motives in Russian literature of the 19th century.
Lu Xun and N. V. Gogol: the unexplored field of poetry

Abstract:Russian literature has had a massive impact upon the creative path of Lu Xun. The researchers of his prose (including sinologist and translator L. Z. Ėĭdlin, literary scholar L. D. Pozdneeva, writer and literary scholar Feng Xue Feng, and others.) oftentimes compared his texts with the works of Russian writers. Despite the fact that Lu Xun wrote poetry throughout his life, his poetic legacy is poorly studied. Comparative analysis is conducted on the poetry of Lu Xun and N. V. Gogol. It is noted that the poetry of both authors reflects their philosophical and cultural views. The similarity of the authors lies in the fact that each used the versification that is traditional for their culture. The content and shape of Gogol’s poetry is based on the Slavic folklore and Orthodox faith, while Lu Xun is one of the initiators of the “New Culture Movement” and is considered an innovator in the Chinese literature. He wrote prose and poetry not in Wenyan (classical Chinese), which was understood by the elite of Chinese society alone, but in Baihua (written vernacular Chinese), the new Chinese literary language. Therefore, Lu Xun made a considerable contribution to the creation of new poetry, and many Chinese literary scholars (Chang Tsao, 1962-2010, Zhu Ziqing, 1898-1948) consider him the founder of the modern versification in China. The article establishes the similarities and differences between the Russian syllabic-accentual verse poems and Chinese new poetry.

Abstract:Abstract In this short article we publish, with translations, a macaronic Hebrew cum Middle Greek religious poem, accompanied by a refrain in Ottoman Turkish, all written in Hebrew characters and fully vocalized. The text comes from a Karaite prayerbook printed in Venice in 1528 on behalf of the Constantinople Karaite community. This poem and its origins played a role in different manipulations of Karaite identities and history during the 19th and 20th centuries.
