Abstract:Translating poetry is a very complex process. The paradoxical nature of untranslatability and translatability of poetry has been noticed by Hai An (The translation of poetry by the translator-cum-poet. Chinese Translator Journals 2005; 6:27-30), citing two famous scholars who are holding totally different opinions toward poetry translation. Robert Frost purports that 'poetry is what gets lost in translation', and Susan Bassnet advocates 'poetry is what we gain in translation'. However, the common ground between these two drastic opinions is that poetry translation is no more a repetition of the original works than a reproduction. There are both similarities and discrepancies between the translated works and the original pieces, or in another word: 'harmony in diversity'. This study aims to testify the above-mentioned proposal in a clear and objective manner, by comparing the original poetry texts (twenty randomly selected poems from Shakespearean sonnets) with their translated versions (the corresponding Chinese-translated versions by four different translators) from the perspective of vocabulary, word frequency distribution and part-of-speech (POS) frequency distribution. The results have corroborated the previous proposal: first, there is no significant difference in terms of vocabulary size and the text management styles between the translated poems and the original ones. Second, there is a significant difference in the word frequency distribution and POS frequency distribution between translated poems and the original ones. Third, there are also differences in the POS frequency distribution in poems translated by different authors. Furthermore, the translation style could distinguish professional translators from professional poets.

Abstract:Mao Zedong, the great leader of China, is also one of the greatest poets in China. His poetry is regarded as the treasure of Chinese literary, in which Qinyuan Chun·Changsha plays an leading position. With the background of “Chinese literary going out”, the translation of the poem seems really meaningful. So in this paper, the author compare seven English versions with the three theories proposed by Professor Xu Yuanchong, the distinguished translator who bend himself to Chinese and English Translation in the field of Chinese poetry so as to provide a reference for promoting the English translation activity of Chinese ancient poetry.

Abstract:The translation of ancient Chinese poetry has always been an insurmountable mountain in literary translation, and Li Bai's poetic merits as a unique symbol of ancient Chinese poetry are more favored by Chinese and foreign translators. Some of the translations are to an extent mixed with drawbacks. Based on Dr. Wang Feng’s “Harmony-guided Three-Level poetry translation criteria”, this paper compares and analyzes four English versions of Li Bai’s “Song of the Roosting Crows”. It demonstrates the practical value of this theory in Chinese poetry translation, hoping to promote the dissemination of Chinese literature and culture.

Abstract:Abstract There have been numerous classical Chinese poems translated into English since the 18th century, and many of them enjoy more than one version. This article discusses some prominent aspects of English translation of classical Chinese poetry, such as choice of words, syntax, metre and form, and allusion, based on comparative analysis of different versions. In the language of classical Chinese poetry, the prevailing monosyllabic word often tends to be polysemous and the grammatical function of a word more flexible. There are also many grammatical ellipses in its syntax. How does a translator choose the right word and decipher the sentence? In addition, classical Chinese poetry enjoys strict verse forms and rhyme schemes, and has a tradition to employ literary allusions. How can an English version achieve an equivalent effect? To solve such problems, translators in different times and places have made various experiments. But the swing of the pendulum seems not to go beyond the two extremes, rigidly imitating the original form or freely rewriting in another language. Under proper modulation, both methods may score some points. Résumé Il y a eu de nombreux poèmes classiques en langue chinoise traduits vers la langue anglaise depuis le 18ème siècle, et plusieurs d'entre eux ont plus d'une version. Cet article discute de certains aspects particuliers de la traduction anglaise de la poésie classique chinoise tels que le choix des mots, la syntaxe, la versification et la forme ainsi que les allusions, basées sur l'analyse comparative des différentes versions. Dans le langage de la poésie classique chinoise, le mot monosyllabique qui prévaut tend à avoir plusieurs significations et la fonction grammaticale du mot à être plus souple. Il existe aussi beaucoup d'ellipses grammaticales dans sa syntaxe. Comment un traducteur choisit-il le mot exact et décompose-t-il la phrase? En outre. la poésie classique chinoise nous offre une structure en vers et un agencement de rimes très strictes et possède une tradition de l'emploi d'allusions littéraires. Comment une version anglaise peut-elle atteindre un effet équivalent? Pour résoudre ce type de problèmes, les traducteurs à différentes époques et lieux ont effectué des expériences différentes. Mais le pendule ne balance pas en dehors des deux extrêmes, l'imitation rigide de la forme originale ou sa réécriture libre dans une autre langue. Selon la modulation appropriée, chacune des deux méthodes pourrait présenter certains avantages.

Taking examples mainly from Fifty Selected Children's Poetry in Ancient China: English Translation and Appreciation, this paper applied the Three-Level Criteria of poetry translation by Dr. Wang Feng to analyze several English translations of children’s object-chanting poetry in ancient China. In children’s object-chanting poetry translation, at the macro-level, the criterion is Harmony; at the middle level, the theory of “resemblance in style, sense and poetic realm”; at the micro-level, the criteria of Eight Beauties, centered on the beauty of emotions and images. Based on these analyses, this paper aims to test the validity of the "Three-Level Criteria of poetry translation" and hopes to guide and promote the theoretical and practical studies on the English translation of children’s poetry in ancient China from a new perspective.

Abstract:Yu Meiren is a wonderful work of classical Chinese poetry because of the poet’s inexhaustible sadness for the destruction of his country, which is just like a torrent of water. Due to the unique cultural symbols, Chinese poetry has also been given much attention in the study of foreign translations of Chinese culture. With the frequent cultural exchanges between China and other foreign countries, translators for Chinese poetry translation are also becoming more than before. However, the translation of the same poem may have different characteristics because of the different translation views and purposes of translators. Under the guidance of the Skopos Theory, this paper will analyze different versions of translations of Yu Meiren and discuss the translation strategies that should be adopted in the translation of Chinese poems. Thus, the translation of Chinese poetry will be more in line with the reading habits of the target readers and promote the foreign dissemination of China’s excellent traditional culture.

Abstract:Tang poetry, a treasure of Chinese classical culture and art, is one of the precious representatives of the Chinese historical and cultural heritage. With its rich form, wide range of subjects and unique artistic charm, it represents the highest level of Chinese classical poetry. Based on Dr. Wang Feng's "Harmony-guided Three-Level poetry translation criteria", this paper compares and analyzes four English versions of different styles in different periods of Li Bai's "Qing Ping Melody (three poems)", and demonstrates that the theory is reasonable and feasible as the principle of poetry translation practice and criticism, aiming to encourage researchers to pay more attention to the field of Tang poetry translation and promote the further dissemination of Chinese classical poetry.

Abstract:The poetry of Tang is a kind of classic literature of China and famous historical heritage. Taking the "Harmony-guided Three-Level poetry translation criteria" as the theoretical basis, this paper compares the translations of two translators of different styles in different periods of Li Bai's " Looking at the Mount Sky Gate" from the macro, middle and micro levels. As for the Chinese translator Xu Yuanchong, his version has high formal beauty and musical beauty. Besides the expression of a few images, he also gave a good consideration to "the beauty of numbers". Rewi Alley's translation is a free verse, but he tries to approach the original poem in terms of meaning. By the analysis of the above two versions, the authors endeavor to give their own version according to the "Harmony-guided Three-Level poetry translation criteria". The translation study of " Looking at the Mount Sky Gate " can enrich the theory of "Harmony-guided Three-Level poetry translation criteria" and promote the spread of Chinese literature and culture. Abstract:Phonological rhetoric technique is an indispensable part of Chinese and English poetry. Due to the existence of phonological rhetoric, a poetry is endowed with both distinctive musicality beauty and unique linguistic beauty. Therefore, it is of great significance to explore the translation techniques of phonological rhetoric in the poetry translation from Chinese to English, both for cultural translation output and for absorption of foreign cultures. Presently, there are some problems in the poetry translation of phonological rhetoric translation between Chinese and English, such as the similarity of content, the singleness of translation means and certain limitations. All of these problems have already become an obstacle to the exchanges between Chinese and English. As famous translators, Xu Yuanchong and Wen Yiduo have rich experience in solving the problem of translating the phonological rhetorics in the poems both English and Chinese. This article further explores and improves the methods of poetry translation of phonological rhetoric between Chinese and English by analyzing and comparing the "phonological beauty" in Yuanchong Xu's "Three Beauties" theory and Yiduo Wen's theory on phonological rhetoric translation.

Abstract:Poetry translation evaluation from ancient Chinese to English has been subjective in China. This is caused by the indefinable and intangible notion of ‘poetic spirit’, which is often used in influential translators’ criteria, and by the lack of a systematic investigation of translation evaluation. The problem of subjective criteria has remained unresolved for nearly a century. In order to improve the subjective criteria of poetry translation evaluation, this thesis is an attempt to make objective evaluations of the English translations of an ancient Chinese poem using stylistic theories. To make an objective criticism, it is necessary to offer evidence which is based on systematic and reliable criteria and replicable evaluation procedures. By applying stylistic theories to both the source text and the target texts, it is possible to make a judgement based on the stylistic features found in the texts themselves. Thus, objective evaluation of poetry translation from ancient Chinese to English can be made. This research is qualitative with the data consisting of one ancient Chinese poem as the source text and six English translations as the target texts. It carries out stylistic analyses on the data with two approaches based on the cognitive stylistic concept of figure and ground and the linguistic stylistic theory of foregrounding. The target texts are judged by the evidence of locative relations and foregrounding features. This research also explores and proposes a practical framework for poetry translation. The research findings suggest how to make objective poetry translation evaluations and improve translation techniques. They also point out the need to integrate stylistics with translation evaluation to make improvements in the field.

Abstract:Translation is to reproduce the meaning and style of a source language text in a target language text in consideration of the cultural differences. Because of dramatic differences between the cultures, translators have to sacrifice something, such as time, religious connotation, and the wording of the original poem to obtain its aesthetic value and its original beauty. In this paper the author examines the poetry translation focusing on the basic concepts of cultural translation and the difficulties of Chinese poetry translation, and special attentions are paid on losses and the strategies in the translation. Beginning from the basic concepts of cultural translation, the paper expounds the essence of the cultural translation in order to lay a sound foundation for the following analysis of the poetry translation. In Part 2, the paper points out the difficulties of Chinese poetry translation that arise from the differences between Chinese and English cultures .Part 3 is a tentative analysis of the losses in the English translation of Chinese poetry and categorizes the losses into four groups:the loss of time;the loss of religious connotation ;the loss in wording; the loss of allusion. To address the losses, the author proposes several strategies such as free translation , transfer of allusion and annotation.

Abstract:Ancient Chinese poetry,a great spiritual wealth of the Chinese nation,the translation of which is a wonderful work in translation.Although suffering the controversy translated or not translated,the translation products are well known to the world.However,due to the translation courses of College English for no special requirements,the students majoring in non-English have no chance to appreciate the luster of translation versions' bloom.This research,is taking Ma Zhiyuan's "Tian Jing Sha·Qiu Si" as an example,basing on the importance and feasibility of the Translation teaching strategies in non-English majors as well as to intrigue student's learning enthusiasm in English,and aiming at the horizon of foreign cultural knowledge broadening and the purpose of popularizing the knowledge translation fulfilling.

Abstract:The abstract is to be in fully Chinese poetry is the precious cultural heritage of the Chinese nation, condensing the essence of traditional Chinese culture. From Tang poetry, Song Ci to Yuan Qu, the charm of Chinese poetry has conquered generations of readers. Chinese poetry works like a bridge of communication, allowing a dialogue between Eastern and Western cultures. Image is an important part of poetry, carrying a heavy cultural tradition, which is the sediment of the long history and splendid culture of the Chinese nation. From the perspective of Cultural Translation Theory, this paper selects representative Chinese poems about "bamboo" to study and explore effective translation strategies. The aim of the research in the paper is to made readers appreciate the beauty of the image of "bamboo" in Chinese ancient poetry and promote the international communication of Chinese poetry as well.
