Abstract:An elementary derivation of best eavesdropping strategies for the 4 state BB84 quantum cryptography protocol is presented, for both incoherent and two--qubit coherent attacks. While coherent attacks do not help Eve to obtain more information, they are more powerful to reveal the whole message sent by Alice. Our results are based on symmetric eavesdropping strategies, which we show to be sufficient to analyze these kind of problems.

Abstract:Though the BB84 protocol has provable security over a noiseless quantum channel, the security is not proven over current noisy technology. The level of tolerable error on such systems is still unclear, as is how much information about a raw key may be obtained by an eavesdropper. We develop a reproducible test to determine the security--or lack thereof--of the protocol in practice. This enables us to obtain an experimental estimate of the information that can be obtained using asymmetric phase-covariant cloning to eavesdrop on the BB84 protocol.

Abstract:A probabilistic clone-resend attacks strategy of BB84 protocol is proposed and the security of Quantum Key Distribution of BB84 protocol under this attacks strategy is discussed in this paper. It is shown that the bit error rate of the sifted key is reduced to 16.6% against the intercept-resend attack strategy. There is an asymptotic perfect security of BB84 protocol with privacy amplification technique in this scheme.

Abstract:A kind of attack strategy based on a probabilistic cloning machine is proposed in this letter. The security of BB84 and the six-state quantum key distribution protocols under this attack is studied by theoretic analyses and corroborated by simulations. It is concluded that the quantum key distribution protocols still have an asymptotic perfect security even if the eavesdropper adopts the proposed attack strategy.

Abstract:The BB84-based quantum key distribution system is limited in high-speed and chip integration due to the requirement of preparing and measuring four states. Recently, the simplified BB84 protocol with preparation and measurement of only three states has showed the approximate secret key rate with standard BB84. However, the security proof is valid only under the collective attack and requires the basis-independent detection efficiency condition. Here, we provide a security proof against the coherent attack, which simultaneously removes the basis-independent detection efficiency condition. Importantly, the phase error rate formula is quite simple through subtle observation. We expect that the simplified BB84 protocol with the decoy-state method can be implemented widely in reality.

Abstract:Quantum key distribution algorithms are considered secure because they leverage quantum phenomena to provide security. As such, eavesdroppers can be detected by analyzing the error rate in the shared key obtained by the parties performing the key exchange. Nevertheless, this paper developed and investigated a novel attack strategy capable of being undetected through error analysis of the shared key. Said attack entails an eavesdropper measuring the quantum channel (i.e., the channel used to transmit quantum particles between two parties) using a higher dimension than that used by the legitimate parties. By measuring a particle in a dimension that spans all possible states in a given quantum key distribution algorithm, the collapsed state of the measured particle should be undetectable when measured in the lower dimension. To analyze the proposed high-dimensional eavesdropping attack, the simulator Cirq was used to model the attack on BB84, a four-dimensional variant of BB84, and the Six-State Protocol. The results of these simulations show the efficiency of this attack, with an eavesdropper being undetectable through quantum bit error rate analysis in each algorithm This promotes the need for further analysis of the high-dimensional eavesdropping attack on physical hardware and other quantum key distribution algorithms

Abstract:For the past few years, the security of practical quantum key distribution systems has attracted a lot of attention. Device-independent quantum key distribution was proposed to design a real-life secure quantum key distribution system with imperfect and untrusted quantum devices. In this paper, we analyzed the security of BB84 protocol in a device-independent scenario based on the entanglement distillation method. Since most of the reported loopholes are in receivers of quantum key distribution systems, we focus on condition that the transmitter of the system is perfectly coincident with the requirement of the BB84 protocol, while the receiver can be controlled by eavesdropper. Finally, the lower bound of the final secret-key rate was proposed and we explained why the secure-key rate is similar to the well-known result for the original entanglement distillation protocol.

Abstract:Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) is a technique that enables secure communication between two parties by sharing a secret key. One of the most well-known QKD protocols is the BB84 protocol, proposed by Charles Bennett and Gilles Brassard in 1984. In this protocol, Alice and Bob use a quantum channel to exchange qubits, allowing them to generate a shared key that is resistant to eavesdropping. This paper presents a comparative study of existing QKD schemes, including the BB84 protocol, and highlights the advancements made in the BB84 protocol over the years. The study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the different QKD schemes and their strengths and weaknesses and demonstrate QKDs working principles through existing simulations and implementations. Through this study, we show that the BB84 protocol is a highly secure QKD scheme that has been extensively studied and implemented in various settings. Furthermore, we discuss the improvements made to the BB84 protocol to enhance its security and practicality, including the use of decoy states and advanced error correction techniques. Overall, this paper provides a comprehensive analysis of QKD schemes, focusing on the BB84 protocol in secure communication technologies.

Abstract:A striking scheme called ``counterfactual quantum cryptography'' gives a conceptually new approach to accomplish the task of key distribution. It allows two legitimate parties to share a secret even though a particle carrying secret information is not, in fact, transmitted through the quantum channel. Since an eavesdropper cannot directly access the entire quantum system of each signal particle, the protocol seems to provide practical security advantages. However, here we propose an eavesdropping method which works on the scheme in a finite key scenario. We show that, for practical systems only generating a finite number of keys, the eavesdropping can obtain all of the secret information without being detected. We also present a improved protocol as a countermeasure against this attack.

Abstract: Decoy-state quantum key distribution (QKD) has convincingly been shown the core solution to secure key exchange. While standard BB84 protocol needs to prepare and measure all states of two complementary bases, which seriously restricts its real life applications in photonic integration and high speed system. Fortunately, a simplified BB84, only sending and receiving three states, achieves the same asymptotic secret key rate compared with standard BB84 under coherent attacks. In this work, by skillfully exploiting uncertainty relation for smooth entropies, we provide the finite-key security bounds for decoy-state simplified BB84 QKD against coherent attacks in the universally composable framework. Simulation results show that it can also achieve almost the same performance compared with standard BB84 even the total number of pulses is as low as $10^{8}$. We conclude that simplified BB84 can completely replace standard BB84 to be the best choice for QKD in most common practical scenarios.

Abstract:We introduce an attack scheme for eavesdropping the ping-pong quantum communication protocol proposed by Bostr$\ddot{o}$m and Felbinger [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{89}, 187902 (2002)] freely in a noise channel. The vicious eavesdropper, Eve, intercepts and measures the travel photon transmitted between the sender and the receiver. Then she replaces the quantum signal with a multi-photon signal in a same state, and measures the photons return with the measuring basis with which Eve prepares the fake signal except for one photon. This attack increase neither the quantum channel losses nor the error rate in the sampling instances for eavesdropping check. It works for eavesdropping the secret message transmitted with the ping-pong protocol. Finally, we propose a way for improving the security of the ping-pong protocol.

Abstract:Quantum secret sharing (QSS) is the process of splitting a secret message into multiple parts such that no subset of parts is sufficient to reconstruct the secret message, but the entire set is. Ever since the first protocol was proposed, QSS has attracted intensive study, and many protocols have been proposed and implemented over recent years. However, we discover that several ring-topology based QSS protocols cannot resist Trojan-horse attacks. In this paper, we first give a modified Trojan-horse attack strategy and show that the eavesdropper can obtain any player's private data and the dealer's secret message without leaving any trace. Then we show that existing defense strategies cannot resist our attack. To defeat such attacks, we design a defense strategy based on quantum memory and evaluate its performance. The evaluation results indicate that the eavesdropper's attack significantly increases the quantum bit error rate and can thus be detected.

Abstract:The BB84 quantum key distribution protocol set the foundation for achieving secure quantum communication. Since its inception, significant advancements have aimed to overcome experimental challenges and enhance security. In this paper, we report the implementation of a passive polarization-encoded BB84 protocol using a heralded single-photon source. By passively and randomly encoding polarization states with beam splitters and half-wave plates, the setup avoids active modulation, simplifying design and enhancing security against side-channel attacks. The heralded single-photon source ensures a low probability of multi-photon emissions, eliminating the need for decoy states and mitigating photon number splitting vulnerabilities. The quality of the single-photon source is certified by measuring the second-order correlation function at zero delay, $g^{2}(0)=0.0408\pm0.0008$, confirming a very low probability of multi-photon events. Compared to conventional BB84 or BBM92 protocols, our protocol provides optimized resource trade-offs, with fewer detectors (compared to BBM92) and no reliance on external quantum random number generators (compared to typical BB84) to drive Alice's encoding scheme. Our implementation achieved a quantum bit error rate of 7% and a secure key rate of 5 kbps. These results underscore the practical, secure, and resource-efficient framework our protocol offers for scalable quantum communication technologies.

Abstract:A frequency-coded quantum key distribution scheme, what we propose here, is that using encoded qubit in different frequency of a photon in four kinds of states. These states satisfy requirements of BB84 protocol and could be produced with the recent advances in technology. Comparing with the scheme proposed in [Bloch et al., Opt. Lett. 32 (2007) 301], our scheme has no intrinsic deficiency that the measurement of one kind of the states will get wrong result with a little probability, and is a perfect BB84 protocol. The characters and feasibility of the scheme are discussed in detail.
