Abstract:Quantum key distribution (QKD) allows two remote parties to share information-theoretically secure keys. In recent years, a revolutionary breakthrough called twin-field (TF) QKD has been developed to overcome the linear key-rate constraint and greatly increases the achievable distance. Phase-randomization and subsequent postselection play important roles in its security proof. Later, no-phase-postselection TF-QKD was proposed and became a popular variant, since the removal of phase postselection leads to a higher key rate. However, the achievable distance is decreased compared to the original one. Here, we propose a TF-QKD protocol with partial phase postselection. Namely, its code mode is still free from global phase randomization and postselection to make sure the advantage of the high key rate remains. On other hand, phase postselection is introduced in the decoy mode to improve the performance. Applying an operator dominance condition, we prove universal security of the proposed protocol in the finite-key case under coherent attacks, and numerical simulations confirm its potential advantages in terms of key rate and achievable distance.

And we present a simulation comparing the key generation rate with that in active-decoy, the result shows our scheme performs as good as active decoy TF-QKD, and our scheme could reach satisfactory secret key rates with just a few photon detectors. This shows our work is meaningful in practice.

Abstract:A striking scheme called ``counterfactual quantum cryptography'' gives a conceptually new approach to accomplish the task of key distribution. It allows two legitimate parties to share a secret even though a particle carrying secret information is not, in fact, transmitted through the quantum channel. Since an eavesdropper cannot directly access the entire quantum system of each signal particle, the protocol seems to provide practical security advantages. However, here we propose an eavesdropping method which works on the scheme in a finite key scenario. We show that, for practical systems only generating a finite number of keys, the eavesdropping can obtain all of the secret information without being detected. We also present a improved protocol as a countermeasure against this attack.

Abstract:Twin-field quantum key distribution (TF-QKD) and its variant protocols are highly attractive due to its advantage of overcoming the well-known rate-loss limit for QKD protocols, i.e. $Rleqslant log_2(1-eta)$ with $eta$ standing for the channel transmittance. These protocols can be divided into two types, with phase randomization from $[0,pi]$ and without phase randomization. Here, we generalize the two types into a unified protocol, where Alice and Bob prepare coherent states with $2M$ ($Min{1,2,3...}$) different phases. Moreover, our security proof indicates that the achievable distance becomes longer with $M$ exponentially increasing, as a trade-off, the secret key rate will be lowered at short distance due to phase postselection. Numerical simulations show that the protocol with $M=2$ may be the best choice in experiment.

Abstract:Twin-field quantum key distribution (TF-QKD) and its variant protocols are highly attractive due to the advantage of overcoming the rate-loss limit for secret key rates of point-to-point QKD protocols. For variations of TF-QKD, the key point to ensure security is switching randomly between a code mode and a test mode. Among all TF-QKD protocols, their code modes are very different, e.g. modulating continuous phases, modulating only two opposite phases, and sending or not sending signal pulses. Here we show that, by discretizing the number of global phases in the code mode, we can give a unified view on the first two types of TF-QKD protocols, and demonstrate that increasing the number of discrete phases extends the achievable distance, and as a trade-off, lowers the secret key rate at short distances due to the phase post-selection.

Abstract:We propose a fully-passive twin-field quantum key distribution (QKD) setup where basis choice, decoy-state preparation and encoding are all implemented entirely by post-processing without any active modulation. Our protocol can remove the potential side-channels from both source modulators and detectors, and additionally retain the high key rate advantage offered by twin-field QKD, thus offering great implementation security and good performance. Importantly, we also propose a post-processing strategy that uses mismatched phase slices and minimizes the effect of sifting. We show with numerical simulation that the new protocol can still beat the repeaterless bound and provide satisfactory key rate.

Abstract:Long-distance quantum key distribution (QKD) has long time seriously relied on trusted relay or quantum repeater, which either has security threat or is far from practical implementation. Recently, a solution called twin-field (TF) QKD and its variants have been proposed to overcome this challenge. However, most security proofs are complicated, a majority of which could only ensure security against collective attacks. Until now, the full and simple security proof can only be provided with asymptotic resource assumption. Here, we provide a composable finite-key analysis for coherent-state-based TF-QKD with rigorous security proof against general attacks. Furthermore, we develop the optimal statistical fluctuation analysis method to significantly improve secret key rate in high-loss regime. The results show that coherent-state-based TF-QKD is practical and feasible, with the potential to apply over nearly one thousand kilometers.
Simple Method for Asymmetric Twin-Field Quantum Key Distribution

Abstract:Twin-Field quantum key distribution (TF-QKD) can beat the linear bound of repeaterless QKD systems. After the proposal of the original protocol, multiple papers have extended the protocol to prove its security. However, these works are limited to the case where the two channels have equal amount of loss (i.e. are symmetric). In a practical network setting, it is very likely that the channels are asymmetric due to e.g. geographical locations. In this paper we extend the "simple TF-QKD" protocol to the scenario with asymmetric channels. We show that by simply adjusting the two signal states of the two users (and not the decoy states) they can effectively compensate for channel asymmetry and consistently obtain an order of magnitude higher key rate than previous symmetric protocol. It also can provide 2-3 times higher key rate than the strategy of deliberately adding fibre to the shorter channel until channels have equal loss (and is more convenient as users only need to optimize their laser intensities and do not need to physically modify the channels). We also perform simulation for a practical case with three decoy states and finite data size, and show that our method works well and has a clear advantage over prior art methods with realistic parameters.

Practical security of twin-field quantum key distribution under wavelength-switching attack

Abstract:The twin-field class quantum key distribution (TF-class QKD) has experimentally demonstrated the ability to surpass the fundamental rate-distance limit without requiring a quantum repeater, as a revolutional milestone. In TF-class QKD implementation, an optical phase-locked loop (OPLL) structure is commonly employed to generate a reference light with correlated phase, ensuring coherence of optical fields between Alice and Bob. In this configuration, the reference light, typically located in the untrusted station Charlie, solely provides wavelength reference for OPLL and does not participate in quantum-state encoding. However, the reference light may open a door for Eve to enter the source stations that are supposed to be well protected. Here, by identifying vulnerabilities in the OPLL scheme, we propose and demonstrate a wavelength-switching attack on a TF-class QKD system. This attack involves Eve deliberately manipulating the wavelength of the reference light to increase mean photon number of prepared quantum states, while maintaining stable interference between Alice and Bob as required by TF-class QKD protocols. The maximum observed increase in mean photon number is 8.7%, which has been theoretically proven to compromise the security of a TF-class QKD system. Moreover, we have shown that with well calibration of the modulators, the attack can be eliminated. Through this study, we highlight the importance of system calibration in the practical security in TF-class QKD implementation.

Abstract:Large-scale quantum communication networks are still a huge challenge due to the rate-distance limit of quantum key distribution (QKD). Recently, twin-field (TF) QKD has been proposed to overcome this limit. Here, we prove that coherent-state-based TF-QKD is a time-reversed entanglement protocol, where the entanglement generation is realized with entanglement swapping operation via an entangled coherent state measurement. We propose a coherent-state-based TF-QKD with optimal secret key rate under symmetric and asymmetric channels by using coherent state and cat state coding. Furthermore, we show that our protocol can be converted to all recent coherent-state-based TF-QKD protocols by using our security proof. By using the entanglement purification with two-way classical communication, we improve the transmission distance of all coherent-state-based TF-QKD protocols.

Abstract:Twin-field (TF) quantum key distribution (QKD) has been extensively researched because of its long transmission distance. The phase-encoding TF-QKD can realize both a high key rate and a long transmission distance, so it has attracted a lot of attention. In this article, we are inspired by the sending-or-not-sending TF-QKD, in which the information leakages of correct rounds and erroneous rounds are calculated separately. And, we notice that this kind of method has been used in many QKD protocols-for example, the six-state QKD. We apply a similar method to the phase-matching TF-QKD and find some improvement in it. With the new analysis, the transmission distance can be improved without any changes in experiments. We also apply the new analysis in the four-phase partial-phase-postselection protocol, and a similar improvement can be achieved.
Twin-field Quantum Key Distribution with Large Misalignment Error

Abstract:Based on the novel idea of twin-field quantum key distribution [TF-QKD; Lucamarini et al., Nature (London) 557, 400 (2018)], we present a protocol named the ``sending or not sending TF-QKD'' protocol, which can tolerate large misalignment error. A revolutionary theoretical breakthrough in quantum communication, TF-QKD changes the channel-loss dependence of the key rate from linear to square root of channel transmittance. However, it demands the challenging technology of long-distance single-photon interference, and also, as stated in the original paper, the security proof was not finalized there due to the possible effects of the later announced phase information. Here we show by a concrete eavesdropping scheme that the later phase announcement does have important effects and the traditional formulas of the decoy-state method do not apply to the original protocol. We then present our ``sending or not sending'' protocol. Our protocol does not take postselection for the bits in $Z$-basis (signal pulses), and hence the traditional decoy-state method directly applies and automatically resolves the issue of security proof. Most importantly, our protocol presents a negligibly small error rate in $Z$-basis because it does not request any single-photon interference in this basis. Thus our protocol greatly improves the tolerable threshold of misalignment error in single-photon interference from the original a few percent to more than $45%$. As shown numerically, our protocol exceeds a secure distance of 700, 600, 500, or 300 km even though the single-photon interference misalignment error rate is as large as $15%, 25%, 35%$, or $45%$.

Abstract:Twin-field quantum key distribution can break through the linear bound, and promises higher key rate over longer distance. But there are two main challenges of signal processing when the twin-field protocol is implemented. One is remote generation of twin fields, the other is perfect compensation of the fast phase drift. Here, we introduce the typical methods and strategies to deal with these challenges by analysis of recent experiments, especially the latest twin-field experiment over 833.8 km fiber.

Abstract:The twin-field quantum key distribution (TF-QKD) protocol and its variants can overcome the well-known rate-loss bound without quantum repeaters, which have attracted significant attention. Generally, to ensure the security of these protocols, weak coherent states with continuous randomized phases are always assumed in the test mode. However, this assumption is difficult to meet in practice. To bridge the gap between theory and practice, we propose two alternative discrete-phase-randomized (DPR)-twin-field quantum key distribution protocols, which remove the phase sifting procedure in the code mode. Simulation results show that when compared with previous discrete-phase-randomized-twin-field quantum key distribution protocols, our modified protocols can significantly improve the secret key rate in the low channel loss range, which is very promising for practical twin-field quantum key distribution systems.

Abstract:Twin-field quantum key distribution (TFQKD), using single-photon-type interference, offers a way to exceed the rate-distance limit without quantum repeaters. However, it still suffers from photon losses and dark counts, which impose an ultimate limit on its transmission distance. In this Letter, we propose a scheme to implement TFQKD with an entangled coherent state source in the middle to increase its range, as well as comparing its performance under coherent attacks with that of TFQKD variants. Simulations show that our protocol has a theoretical distance advantage of 400 km. Moreover, the scheme has great robustness against the misalignment error and finite-size effects. Our work is a promising step toward long-distance secure communication and is greatly compatible with future global quantum networks.

Differential phase shift quantum secret sharing using twin field

Abstract:Quantum secret sharing (QSS) is essential for multiparty quantum communication, which is one of cornerstones in the future quantum internet. However, a linear rate-distance limitation severely constrains the secure key rate and transmission distance of QSS. Here, we present a practical QSS protocol among three participants based on the differential phase shift scheme and twin field ideas for the solution of high-efficiency multiparty communication task. In contrast to formerly proposed differential phase shift QSS protocol, our protocol can break the linear rate-distance bound, theoretically improving the secret key rate by three orders of magnitude in a 300-km-long fiber. Furthermore, the new protocol is secure against Trojan horse attacks that cannot be resisted by previous differential phase shift QSS.

Abstract:Quantum key distribution (QKD) can help two distant peers to share secret key bits, whose security is guaranteed by the law of physics. In practice, the secret key rate of a QKD protocol is always lowered with the increasing of channel distance, which severely limits the applications of QKD. Recently, twin-field (TF) QKD has been proposed and intensively studied, since it can beat the rate-distance limit and greatly increase the achievable distance of QKD. Remarkalebly, K. Maeda et. al. proposed a simple finite-key analysis for TF-QKD based on operator dominance condition. Although they showed that their method is sufficient to beat the rate-distance limit, their operator dominance condition is not general, i.e. it can be only applied in three decoy states scenarios, which implies that its key rate cannot be increased by introducing more decoy states, and also cannot reach the asymptotic bound even in case of preparing infinite decoy states and optical pulses. Here, to bridge this gap, we propose an improved finite-key analysis of TF-QKD through devising new operator dominance condition. We show that by adding the number of decoy states, the secret key rate can be furtherly improved and approach the asymptotic bound. Our theory can be directly used in TF-QKD experiment to obtain higher secret key rate. Our results can be directly used in experiments to obtain higher key rates.
