Abstract: Damage to materials is mainly the process of initiation and growth of micro-cracks and cavities. On that scale, the phenomenon is discontinuous. In most of the engineering materials, such micro-cracks can be considered to be spatially and randomly distributed in all directions. The randomness of distribution of micro-cracks in all directions may cause an isotropic discontinuous state which has been successfully modelled using a continuous variable called damage variable Ω related to the density of such defects. It is generally considered that the damage variable in an isotropic damage model is a scalar.

Abstract:This paper describes the development of a constitutive model for predicting dynamic anisotropic damage and fragmentation of rock materials under blast loading. In order to take account of the anisotropy of damage, a second rank symmetric damage tensor is introduced in the present model. Based on the mechanics of microcrack nucleation, growth and coalescence, the evolution of damage is formulated. The model provides a quantitative method to estimate the fragment distribution and fragment size generated by crack coalescence in the dynamic fragmentation process. It takes account of the experimental facts that a brittle rock material does not fail if the applied stress is lower than its static strength and certain time duration is needed for fracture to take place when it is subjected to a stress higher than its static strength. Numerical results are compared with those from independent field tests.

Abstract: In all engineering material applications, material durability plays a crucial role. It is well-known that time-dependent materials creep visco-elastically. In addition, some experimental investigations indicate that time-dependent materials such as polymeric composites may undergo both damage and permanent deformation. The above features of material behavior are all life-limiting factors in that they can cause excessive dimensional distortions in addition to stiffness and residual strength degradations. The aim of this study is to establish a framework for modeling the foregoing features of time-dependent material behavior. Such a framework is the basis for performing durability analyses, which play a major role in engineering design.

Abstract: In this chapter, special aspects of brittle damage mechanics are considered, related to the various frameworks by which the behavior of a brittle damaged material can be postulated, still considering the damaged medium as a global continuum. The basic framework of CDM is recalled, stressing the concepts of effective stress and the ways of introducing coupling between damage and brittle behavior. Particular attention is paid to problems related to initial or induced anisotropy and the unilateral character of the brittle damage. Coupling between damage and plasticity is not discussed herein. The materials concerned are rock, concrete, considered initially isotropic and composite, in particular ceramic matrix composites. Some specific models are developed, taking into consideration scalar damage variables for initially anisotropic brittle materials.

Abstract:Abstract This paper proposes a new thermodynamically consistent anisotropic continuum damage mechanics model that the degradation of material is described by a set of damage variables. We adopt a set of novel equivalent strains which are functions of both the strain and the damage state variables as well. A viscous stabilization method is considered to improve the convergence during the material softening. The evolution of damage state variables is updated through a Newton–Raphson iterative process. The expression of the consistent tangent stiffness matrix is also derived. A smoothed exponential damage evolution shape function with rescaling regularization method is proposed to describe the material softening process and the mesh dependency phenomenon is relieved. Several sets of numerical examples including three-point-bending of a notched beam, uniaxial tension of unnotched and notched plate of composite material with multiple layups are presented to verify the anisotropic damage models.

Abstract:An anisotropic elastic-damage coupled constitutive model for plain concrete is developed, which describes the concrete performance degradation. The damage variable, related to the surface density of micro-cracks and micro-voids, and represented by a second order tensor, is governed by the principal tension strain components. For adequately describing the partial crack opening closure effect under tension and compression for concrete, a new suitable thermodynamic potential is proposed to express the state equations for modeling the mechanical behaviors. Within the framework of thermodynamic potential, concrete strain mechanisms are identified in the proposed anisotropic damage model while each state variable is physically explained and justified. The strain equivalence hypothesis is used for deriving the constitutive equations, which leads to the development of a decoupled algorithm for effective stress computation and damage evolution. Additionally, a detailed numerical algorithm is described and the simulations are shown for uni-axial compression, tension and multi-axial loadings. For verifying the numerical results, a series of experiments on concrete were carried out. Reasonably good agreement between experimental results and the predicted values was observed. The proposed constitutive model can be used to accurately model the concrete behaviors under uni-axial compression, tension and multiaxial loadings. Additionally, the presented work is expected to be very useful in the nonlinear finite element analysis of large-scale concrete structures.

Abstract:"Continuum Damage Mechanics and Numerical Applications" presents a systematic development of the theory of Continuum Damage Mechanics and its numerical engineering applications using a unified form of the mathematical formulations in anisotropic and isotropic damage models. The theoretical framework is based on the thermodynamic theory of energy and material dissipation and is described by a set of fundamental formulations of constitutive equations of damaged materials, development equations of the damaged state, and evolution equations of micro-structures. According to concepts of damage-dissipation of the material state and effective evolution of material properties, all these advanced equations, which take nonsymmetrized effects of damage aspects into account, are developed and modified from the traditional general failure models so they are more easily applied and verified in a wide range of engineering practices by experimental testing. Dr. Wohua Zhang is a Professor at Engineering Mechanics Research Center in Zhejiang University of China. Abstract:This paper establishes a universal framework for the nonlocal modeling of anisotropic damage at finite strains. By the combination of two recent works, the new framework allows for the flexible incorporation of different established hyperelastic finite strain material formulations into anisotropic damage whilst ensuring mesh-independent results by employing a generic set of micromorphic gradient-extensions. First, the anisotropic damage model, generally satisfying the damage growth criterion, is investigated for the specific choice of a Neo-Hookean material on a single element. Next, the model is applied with different gradient-extensions in structural simulations of an asymmetrically notched specimen to identify an efficient choice in the form of a volumetric-deviatoric regularization. Thereafter, the universal framework, which is without loss of generality here specified for a Neo-Hookean material with a volumetric-deviatoric gradient-extension, successfully serves for the complex simulation of a pressure loaded rotor blade. Abstract:This paper proposes an anisotropic damage model for concrete to capture its plasticity and damage behavior effectively. Utilizing the framework of continuum damage mechanics, the model considers the influence of plastic Helmholtz free energy on damage evolution. This approach explicitly deduces damage-related thermodynamic forces without resorting to assumptions such as strain equivalence or energy equivalence. The proposed model employs tensile and compressive damage tensors to describe the development of anisotropic damage in concrete. The solution for plastic strain utilizes the empirical plasticity model. Furthermore, a unified evolutionary criterion for isotropic and anisotropic damage is also established, incorporating damage yield functions and orthogonal flow laws. Numerical simulations are conducted to validate the model’s ability to reproduce typical nonlinear behaviors of concrete structures under various load conditions.

Abstract:New issues, derivations, and remarks are presented for the subject of continuum damage mechanics. Emphasis is placed on the fundamental and basic aspects of damage mechanics. This work is a continuation of a previous work of the authors and provides for a complete analysis of the issues discussed previously. The topics discussed include: (1) the true nature of the damage–integrity angle, (2) modeling damaged solids as composite systems, (3) hypothesis of strain equivalence as a special case of the hypothesis of elastic energy equivalence, (4) mechanics of damaged beams, (5) a mean value theorem for damage mechanics, (6) partial damage mechanics characterization, (7) micro-damage or nano-damage, (8) crack and void mechanics, and (9) conceptual modeling of interfacial damage. It is hoped that these new and fundamental concepts will pave the way for new, consistent, and holistic avenues in research in damage mechanics and characterization of materials.

Abstract:In anisotropic damage mechanics, matrix symmetrisation scheme or treatment in net-stress space is used for mathematical convenience without a strong physical basis. Two different symmetrisation schemes for anisotropic damage model have been compared with the non-symmetrised models proposed for this study. The effects of these symmetrisation schemes are assessed in this paper by deriving the corresponding explicit form of various key parameters for anisotropic damage modelling. It is found that in most cases the symmetrisation process markedly influences the resultant parameters that may lead to spurious results. Hence such a symmetrisation treatment of an anisotropic damage model should be carefully examined. A numerical analysis of a direct shear experiment is also presented to support the assessment of the effects of the symmetrisation schemes considered.

Abstract:This paper addresses explicit yield criteria coupled with anisotropic damage in Cauchy stress space for materials initially obeying J2 plasticity. It is shown in this paper that the original Kachanov–Rabotnov damage model is inherently microplane-based and generally cannot ensure the existence of the effective stress tensors. It is further assumed that the effective stress approach still holds if the effective stress tensor is replaced by the effective stress vector. The effective counterpart of J2 is calculated based on the generalized effective stress approach and the hypothesis of mean square shear stress averaged over all microplanes for J2. It is revealed that the effective counterpart of J2 takes the form of Hill [Hill, R., 1950. The Mathematical Theory of Plasticity, Clarendon Press, Oxford] anisotropic yield function in Cauchy stress space. The six parameters of Hill [Hill, R., 1950. The Mathematical Theory of Plasticity, Clarendon Press, Oxford] anisotropic yield function can be determined uniquely by a fourth-order fabric tensor.

Abstract: When a structural component is subjected to impact or dynamic loading, its response can cause an elevation in the stress level especially in a damaged zone or in the region surrounding cracks or defects. In particular, the micro-structure of the material within the damaged zone is significantly changed compared to its undamaged state, due to the activation and growth of the damage [9-1, 9-2]. The dynamic response of a damaged structural component is considerably different to the corresponding undamaged one due to the change in the micro-structure. For example, the frequency decreases and both the damping ratio and the amplitude increase.

Abstract:The paper deals with fundamental constitutive issues in the elastic–plastic-damage rate theory and the numerical modelling of the large strain elastic–plastic deformation behavior of anisotropically damaged ductile metals. The proposed model is based on a generalized macroscopic theory within the framework of nonlinear continuum damage mechanics taking into account kinematic description of damage. It employs the consideration of damaged as well as fictitious undamaged configurations related via metric transformations which lead to the definition of damage strain tensors. The modular structure of the continuum theory is accomplished by the kinematic decomposition of strain rates into elastic, plastic and damage parts. To be able to address both the plastic flow and the anisotropic damage process, respective Helmholtz free energy functions of the fictitious undamaged configuration and of the current damaged configuration are introduced separately. A generalized yield condition based on invariants of the effective stress tensor is used to adequately describe the plastic flow properties of ductile metals and the plastic strain rate tensor is determined by a non-associated flow rule. Considering the damaged configurations a damage criterion is formulated using stress components referred to the elastically unloaded damage configuration. The damage strain rate tensor takes into account isotropic as well as anisotropic effects providing a realistic physical representation of ductile material degradation. Identification of material parameters is discussed in some detail. The applicability of the proposed continuum damage theory is demonstrated by numerical simulation of the inelastic deformation process of tension specimens.

Abstract:By using the damage model of domain of microcrack growth (DMG) for brittle materials, the anisotropy of constitutive relation due to microcracks, taking the uniaxial tension as an illustration, is discussed. The influences of damage on some components of effective compliance tensor and Poisson's ratios in different directions are shown quantitatively. And based on these analyses, an experimental method of compliance equivalence is suggested to measure the damage state in a brittle material.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to an unified invariant description of the effective elastic compliance, say S, of a two-dimensional (2D) damaged solid with an isotropic matrix. A macro- and micromechanically combined approach is proposed, which consists of three major steps. First, the internal variables, i.e., the damage tensors are correlated with the microscopical geometry and distribution of the damage. It is shown that the damage due to microcracks and holes affect S through a symmetric second-order tensor, d, and an irreducible fourth-order tensor, D. Second, the general formulation of the effective compliance S as an isotropic tensor function of d and D is phenomenologically given by making use of several results in the theory of tensor function representation. The linearization and second-rank nonlinearization from the general formulation are derived, where one and six new parameters (named damage constants), respectively, are consistently introduced. It is shown that the linearization provides the most general invariant formulation for micromechanically-based non-interacting or dilute estimations of the effective compliance, and nonlinear models are accounted for the interacting effect of damage. Third, we relate these damage constants to shape and morphology factors of the damage via micromechanical analyses or computer numerical experiments for problems with simple and regular damage. The above-mentioned approach allows invariant consistent models of effective elastic compliance which are not only capable of describing complex and irregular damage, but also indicate in detail the role of the real damage. Thus, these invariant models may further constitute a solid basis of predicating damage evolution. As an application of the proposed approach, the most general second-rank interacting model for damage due to microcracks is established, which is available for any distribution of microcracks.

Abstract:A physically-based theory of damage for ductile metals is outlined. It rests upon a direct extension of the authors recently proposed viscoplastic model for finite deformations to include the effects of dislocation—void interactions as they manifest themselves in void nucleation, growth, and coalescence. Emphasis is put on illustrating the general structure of the present framework within which coupling effects of texture development, void formation, and adiabatic heating can be considered and their role to the localization of deformation and failure can be evaluated. No special attention is placed on justifying the various growth laws and simplifying assumptions pertaining to the detailed structure of the model, for example the manner that spatial gradients of the damage variable enter into the theory. Such simplifications, however, facilitate the solution of the relevant equations for a case of homogeneous triaxial state of stress permitting a qualitative comparison with experimental data obtained for Bridgeman-notch specimens.
