Abstract:With the great development of the western universities and colleges from 15th to 17th century, the colleges established by Society of Jesuits in Italy, France, Spain and Portugal had become the largest institutions of higher education in Europe. The college discipline system based on″Six Branches of Western Learning″(Rhetorica, Philosophia, Medicina, Leges,Canones, Theologia) reflects the fundamental features of discipline and curriculum in western institutions of high education of the time. In the process of ″Introducing Western Learning to the East″, the Italian Jesuit J.Aleni introduced the″Six Branches of Western Learning″systematically in one of his works Xi Xue Fan(On Western Learning). His book Xi Fang Da Wen (Questions on the West) and Tong You Jiao Yu(Child Education)written by another Italian Jesuit A. Vagnoni also covered this topic. Meanwhile, Italian Jesuits M. Ricci, F.Sambiasi, A. Vagnoni and Portuguese Jesuit F.Furtado translated seven kinds of teaching materials on″Six Branches of Western Learning″of Roman College and Coimbra University into Chinese. With the wide circulation of these books and teaching materials among Chinese intellectuals from late Ming Dynasty to early Qing Dynasty, the western university discipline system began to be introduced into China, which exerted a great impact on Chinese academic thoughts and pioneered the spread of the western higher education. It also paved the way for the introduction of the western university discipline system in late Qing Dynasty.
