Abstract:The recent history of comparative literature in China is closely linked with the appropriation of Western theory by Chinese scholars. In the following we would like to relate some aspects of that history – which very much mirrors the fraught history of China’s relationship with the West – and survey some of the related developments in literary theory and criticism, bearing in mind that one of the problems still facing the introduction of Western theory in China today is the perceived fundamental, or ‘essential’, difference of Eastern and Western thought, and hence of their cultures and literatures. Modern and contemporary Western literary and cultural theories began entering China on a large scale around 1980. Prior to that, the field of literary studies in China had for decades seen political criticism guided and dominated by another vein of Western thought, namely Marxist theory, which reached its ultra-‘Left’ extreme during the Cultural Revolution that lasted from 1966 to 1976. During that period, literary theory and criticism were treated only as political tools for reinforcing the struggle of the proletariat against the bourgeoisie.2 After the end of the Cultural Revolution, China adopted a policy of economic reform, opening the country up to the outside world. Alongside the flow – if not torrent – of Western capital and commodities, various brands of Western literary theory and criticism entered China. All these schools, whether fashionable (such as feminism, deconstruction, psychoanalysis) or out of fashion (such as New Criticism, phenomenology, structuralist narratology) in the West, were invariably new and contemporary to Chinese scholars. This large-scale introduction into China of Western theories from the 1980s on is primarily to be accounted for by the country’s new-found post-‘Cultural Revolution’ interest in modernity and modernization. Abstract:The present study explores the relationship between the reception ofwestern literary theory and the changing stance towards modernity in China. China's warm and climactic reception of western theory in the 1980s has to do with the development of modernity in China. This is particularly notable in the keen interest in formal and aesthetic studies, an interest that is partly attributable to the reaction against long-term political criticism and partly attributable to the pursuit of universal truth. Concepts of modernity, which are peculiar to western culture, have entered China in the shape of universal truth. Treating formalism as universal truth functions to a certain extent as a remedy for the self-split state as a result of identifying with western modernity, but at the same time it has in some degree led to the identity crisis of Chinese intellectuals. In the context of globalization, there have recently emerged various forms of resistance to the identification with western modernity, which may,however,be treated as a mere supplement to modernity.

Abstract:Abstract Studies of the language interpretation of Chinese political discourse usually focus on the interpretation product through a textual analysis conducted between the source and target-language texts. Few studies touch upon the reception and implications of this specific type of interpretation in English-language media. This study aims to investigate the proportion of different types of representations in media coverage and the variations in China’s image. Firstly, we present the distribution of different types of representation; this is followed by a calculation of the frequency of appraisal epithets within the appraisal system; finally, the study identifies various translation strategies employed in government interpretation and media reports, and the variations in China’s image. The evidence suggests the statistical significance of both equaled and downgraded images between the government interpretation and media translation; furthermore, government interpretation presenting more cases of equaled images, and media translation produced a higher number of downgraded images.

Abstract:Literary and cultural theory has entered a "Post-theoretic Era" ,which is different from the previous "golden age". It has the following characteristics:literary theory in its traditional sense has evolved into a more inclusive cultural theory,or just theory; cultural theory can no longer solve all the social problems as it used to; the "Eurocentric" mode of thinking has been deconstructed along with the rise of American hegemony; "West-centrism" is also severely challenged; contemporary cultural theory has no dominant force with different schools and cultural trends moving in different orientations. At this critical moment,the postmodern Neo-Confucianism,which has been reinterpreted and reconstructed,may well become one of the important theoretic resources based on which Chinese academia could carry on equal dialogue with its international peer. As the world is more concerned about China,China's literary and cultural theorists should also think about how to step out of the country so as to utter their voices at the international forum. This is one of the most important revelations China's theorists could get from the "Post-theoretic Era" ,which is also expected by international scholarship of Chinese theorists.

Abstract:"China Question of Western Postcolonial Translation Theory" deals with how western postcolonial translation theory is read, interpreted and applied in China, as well as how the reception in China influences revision and development of the theory. Western postcolonial translation theory, though frequently quoted and highly influential in China, is sometimes incapable of effectively explaining Chinese translation practice and convincing Chinese readers. Based on the analysis of the encounter between postcolonial translation theory and China, three suggestions are proposed to revise translation theory so as to build a "greener," healthier hetero-generative ecology of languages and cultures.

Abstract:The chair's words The western learning into the east began in the late Ming dynasty and early Qing dy-nasty. The European missionaries brought many western things and meanwhile some knowledge such as astronomy, calendar, mathematics and others that influenced Chinese community of knowledge. In the late Qing dynasty political awareness, philosophical thoughts, cultural ideas and others besides advanced technology were introduced into China. New kind of education and translated works influenced Chinese way of living and thinking that led to asking for novelty and changes, which changed the mode of rigid and exclusive thinking and recognition. Today studies on this history should focus on its realistic mean-ing, that's to say, howto viewthe traditional Chinese culture and recent western culture and the relation-ship of Chinese and western cultures in the rising heat of“ancient Chinese knowledge”. Only in this way can we put history as a mirror and push ahead China's reform and opening up to the outside world as well as modernization.

Abstract:Influenced by the Western modern and post-modern art and culture,there appear certain integrating traces between contemporary Chinese and Western culture,so that literary theory in the new century extends its theoretical dimensions in the existing symptoms and crises: literary theory is becoming a kind of pan-cultural theory embracing philosophy,sociology,psychology,and media studies in one;Chinese literary theory begin to has its own thought transformation and discourse construction after long-term follow-up of the Western discourse;literary theory breakthroughs the frame and becomes a type of cultural interaction by infiltrating into other fields;post-orientalist and post-colonialist literary discourse moves forward to its concern about the cultural interpretation of the major text(class,gender,culture,nationality,discourse oppression,power operation,etc.) from its concern about the interpretation of the minor text(language,rhetoric,character,moral,etc.);and modernistic privative literary theory of pure speculation no longer has its own dominating discourse space.Instead,the life experience of the poets,novelists and essayists on the one hand,and the secularized emotions of mass esthetics on the other,are absorbed and sublimed into an innovative theory.And this raises a few new questions for the self-innovation and theoretical reflection of Chinese literary theory to be analyzed and defined with concentration.

Abstract:Abstract Arranged chronologically, this article presents a general picture of Chaucer reception and translation in China, and examines the development of criticism and the interaction of readers with both the original texts and their Chinese translations. By using indicators like university curricula, editions of translations and reprints, critical analyses, adaptations, and popularizations, this study shows that there have been increasing readership in medieval literature and rising admiration for the poet throughout the reception history, with occasional sharp changes. This reception pattern is determined by a combination of factors such as the intrinsic qualities of the texts, readers' concern over contemporary social issues and their own literary past, and the political and intellectual context of the nation as a whole, as well as of interaction with the outside world.

Abstract:This paper makes a research on Application of the Interpretive Theory of Translation in Interpreting Practice and reviews the major developing condition and applications of interpreting studies throughout its history, from which we can see that research methodology of interpreting studies is evolving from objective speculation based on experience to objective description based on data. Since the establishment of the 1980s, with the gradual improvement of the theoretical framework and unique theory angle of view, Interpretive Theory became the dominant interpretive theory in the western countries, leading the Western interpretation research into a new stage dominated by practitioners, which has a significant influence on the research of interpreting in China as well. The theory still has an important guiding significance on the nature of translation, analysis of interpreting process and objects, ideas on interpreting teaching, and on today’s interpreting practice and teaching. This paper tries to make a comprehensive evaluation on the background, developing lines, basic views, creative contribution and prospects, in the hope of promoting the theory in China.

Abstract:TheCultural Travel of Western contemporary theories brought many self-reflections to Chinese literary scholarship. To understand the contexts of these trends of thought being occurred and to think that the problems they mean to resolve have much to do with our own cultural construction. Are they only the problems of the West, or, of our whole world? Are they only the national, inner problems, or, the global ones? Are they the problems of the modern literary scholarship, or, the post-modern ones? Deeply inquiring these problems would be most helpful for us to rethink our own problems and to establish the new Chinese literary theory in the context of globalization in this new century.

Abstract:As the top of the Confucian Classics, Zhouyi exerted great influences upon Chinese culture and the constitution of thinking mode. The metaphysical literary idea affected by Zhouyi aims at exposing the universal principles, which are generally called Dao (Way) in metaphysics. “The Dao inspired the sages to compose articles and the sages reveal the Dao by the articles”, in the way of which the relations between the universe, author, and works were established. Yet, only through the readers’reading could the articles exerts their functions to the society, this stressed the central role the readers played. Afterwards, the reception aesthetics arising in the west also emphasizes the readers’central role, which is consistent with the Chinese metaphysical literary theories.

Abstract:This article reviews the development of Chinese and western translation theories. Firstly, it introduces the three stages of the development of Chinese traditional translation theory, namely, from the initial emphasis on “faithfulness” to the emphasis on “literary grace”, and then to the later debate on the priority on grace or content. Then, it focuses on the development history of western translation theory from ancient Rome to the 20th century, and summarizes two main periods, namely, the period of rhetoric aesthetics and the period of historical comparative linguistics. The former period began with Cicero, who was deeply influenced by Plato, and in turn influenced the later Bible translation and literary translation; the latter period was divided into two stages: before 1950s, it was mainly influenced by structuralist linguistics, and after 1950s, it was profoundly influenced by emerging language schools and modern ideological trends. Through these introductions, it presents the macro framework of the development history of Chinese and western translation theories.

Abstract:This essay attempts to survey and critically reflect the development of modern Chinese literary theory.It summarizes the heritage of modern Chinese literary theory in the form of domestic stand that incorporates Western thoughts,modern position that revitalizes Chinese tradition,union between individuals and the mass,the priority of material over mind in the symbiosis of thought and art,and the necessary tension between interior intellectual system and exterior ideological institutions.The history of modern Chinese literary theory also leaves us some lessons to learn,especially such fixations as inclination to dialectic thinking,thinking taking priority over being,over-appropriating,xenophobic self-closing,and suppressing the academic with the institutions,all of which may be fully examined for the purpose of constructing the 21st century Chinese literary theory with unique features.The paper concludes with some suggestions that such a construction could be achieved by holding onto the Chinese stand while absorbing Western theories,reviving the ancient through the contemporary,flexible handling of the individual-mass relationship,guiding the popular with the refined,maintaining balanced relationships between material reality and high taste,between form and thought,and between institutions and academics.

Abstract:The concept of transculturalism has often been used to describe the increasingly complicated interactions between different cultures under the circumstances of globalization. It is also widely used in international communication and intercultural studies in China, and is often translated into different Chinese concepts such as "跨文化" "超越文化" "转文化". How can we better understand the meaning of this concept in different academic contexts? This paper discovered that this concept was developed as criticism of post-colonialism and that of Western cultural studies reflecting a worldview that is centered on Euro-centrism. The Chinese translation of transculturalism should accordingly vary in different academic discourses. The concept is of great significance to promote cultural equality, cultural connection and respect, cultural exchange and mutual learning. However, cultural competition and western-centrism embedded in Welsch's definition of transculturalism is worthy of attention.

Abstract:The history of the reception of American literature in China may well be one of the most exemplary instances of the contingent and context-bound quality of literary judgment, particularly when it involves cross-cultural negotiations of value and significance. A cursory glance at any research library's catalog in China would suggest Chinese perception of American literature is possibly the most amply documented literary sensibility in today's Chinese scholarship on foreign literature. Each major American author's reception in China would require a booklength study. Abstract:The development of International Relations theory (IRT) in China has been framed by three debates since 1979. The first was about China's opening up to the outside world. It started with the question of whether the world was characterized by ‘war and revolution’ or ‘peace and development’ between orthodox and reformist scholars and continued to focus on China's interest between orthodox scholars and the newly rising Chinese realists. It resulted in a wide acceptance of the reformist argument that peace and development characterized our era and of the realist view that China was a normal nation-state and should have its own legitimate national interest. The second started in the early 1990s and centered on the better way of realizing China's national interest. It was between Chinese realists and liberals. While the former emphasized national power, the latter proposed the alternative approach of international institutions. The third debate was on China's peaceful rise. It evolved at the turn of the century, when all the three major American IRTs, realism, liberalism, and constructivism, had been introduced into China and therefore the debate was more a tripartite contention. Realists believed that it was impossible for any major power to rise peacefully, while liberals and constructivists both supported the peaceful-rise argument. Liberals stressed more the tangible benefits derived from international institutions and constructivists explored more China's identity in its increasing interaction with international society. Although it was Chinese constructivists who explicitly discussed the identity issue, all the three debates and all the debating sides have reflected this century puzzle since the Opium War – China's identity vis-à-vis international society. These debates have helped push forward the IRT development in China and at the same time established Western IRT as the dominant discourse. A new round of debate seems likely to occur and may center on the question of the world order. This time it may help the newly burgeoning but highly dynamic Chinese IRT to develop and contribute to the enrichment of IRT as knowledge of human life.

Abstract:In their article "A Survey of Twentieth-century Literary Theory and Criticism in Chinese" Xiaoming Chen and Anfeng Sheng survey Chinese-language scholarship that for the reason of the East-West divide is less known in the West. Although heavily influenced by both Western and Soviet Marxist thought, twentieth-century Chinese literary theorization and criticism produced much incisive scholarship based on the vast knowledge existing in Chinese culture and literary scholarship. Chen and Sheng survey pioneering works by numerous Chinese literary theorists and critics who have been influential in their own time and exerted persistent modeling influences until today and the article is meant to adjust the anonymous position of Chinese literary theorization in the West and thus to contribute to the diversity of literary studies.
